Christians often know the theory of the Spirit-filled life but not the joy-filled experience . Pastor and theologian A. W. Tozer said that Christians often know nothing personally about the inner fire of a Spirit-filled life. This timely voice provides a timeless glimpse into spiritual maturity and growth. The "deeper life" is deeper only because the average Christian life is tragically and unnecessarily shallow. Tozer examines our lack of personal zeal and its causes. Why do we settle for peace of mind and material prosperity? What can we do with our fears, disappointments, and disillusionment? In The Deeper Life , Tozer demonstrates how the ancient heart-thirst felt by all of us can only be quenched by the personal presence of God Himself. We must press on to enjoy in personal inward experience the exalted privileges that are ours in Christ Jesus. We must surrender our whole beings to the power of the cross. We must die to our sins, our righteousness, and everything in which we formerly prided ourselves. We must be willing to make Christ our one supreme Lord. Tozer wants to ignite a divine fire in our souls. Readers examine their relationship to the Holy Spirit, discover the value of spiritual gifts, and follow sequential steps to living The Deeper Life .
Aiden Wilson Tozer was an American evangelical pastor, speaker, writer, and editor. After coming to Christ at the age of seventeen, Tozer found his way into the Christian & Missionary Alliance denomination where he served for over forty years. In 1950, he was appointed by the denomination's General Council to be the editor of "The Alliance Witness" (now "Alliance Life").
Born into poverty in western Pennsylvania in 1897, Tozer died in May 1963 a self-educated man who had taught himself what he missed in high school and college due to his home situation. Though he wrote many books, two of them, "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy" are widely considered to be classics.
A.W. Tozer and his wife, Ada Cecelia Pfautz, had seven children, six boys and one girl.
The Deeper Life is a quick read that explains what the author means by the title. It reveals what the deeper life is and isn’t and expounds on what it takes for spiritual change. And not only tells us but encourages us to experience it.
We not only learn what spirit-filled living is, but what it looks like and feels like. I was especially inspired by the section on spiritual gifts. We each have a place in the world, a place God put us, and the Holy Spirit gave our souls unique and valuable gifts.
Reading this brief book has inspired me, encouraged me, and helped me place focus on Him. The subtitle says it all: Go beyond knowledge to experience spirit-filled living.
With five simple words the apostle Paul starts us on the path of new understanding” “That I may know Him.”
First Line: It is my serious conviction that there lies within the framework of fundamental Christianity a place of power and fruitfulness far richer and more beautiful than anything the average Christian at present enjoys. Genre: Christian Spiritual Growth Author: A. W. Tozer Page Count: 112
#CoverLoverBookReview received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions are 100% mine.
A concise yet hard hitting read, that in nine chapters exhorts its readers to not settle for shallow Christianity, but to strive to truly experience God as he invites us to in His word.
Mr. Tozer does and excellent job of encouraging his readers to not settle, but to continue thirsting and seeking Christ through Scriptures, the Spirit, and by surrendering our will to His. A quick read, but one that takes some time to mull through.
Encouraging readers to get past head knowledge to a deeper, more beautiful, personal relationship with Christ. You don't have to rely on sleazy prosperity gospel promises but on the words of God, He has given us everything that we need if we only seek Him with our whole hearts. I also really enjoyed Mr. Tozer's take on Spiritual gifts.
Overall, another wonderfully compiled read from A.W. Tozer who is just as timely now as he was in the over 50 years ago when he wrote this book. Highly recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is one of those books every Christian should read. A great place to start if we desire to change and be completely His and truly impact the church.
Really makes you rethink your relationship with God and opens your mind to the spiritual world around you. We are just a speck of dust and he cares about us more than life itself.
