“It is easy to think of polymer clay as glorified modeling clay, but as a serious craft medium, it requires knowing some basic techniques. These are covered in great detail with excellent photos....Beginners will find many of their questions answered....After mastering the basics one can move on to complex projects such as miniature villages.... Recommended.” — Library Journal.
I must admit I eased into polymer clay the easy way with a couple of ready-made kits. Then I decided it was time to go beyond the mechanics.
However, for the more adventurous this is a great starter book. It covers tools, techniques, and step-by-step instructions on being creative with polymer clay. It is organized to take you from ground zero to where no other artist has gone before.
Back in the sixties and seventies people spent a lot more time with unique materials and were sort of back to basics in crafts. Crafts (real crafts where one had to work from design and raw material) seem to become scarce from mainstream living. During the following years, polymer clay has survived and is not just some kid's kitsch projects.
The author of this book is the president of the San Diego Polymer Clay Guild and takes the craft seriously. She even works for the National Polymer Clay Guild. If you are wondering why the photographs are so well-done Syndee Holt has a Fine Arts degree in photography.
Read this sitting down at the library. Very helpful you want to try some clay projects. Tells you the difference between each brand of clay and EACH brand of Sculpy. Simple projects, easy to understand instruction and lots of photos. Learned the invaluable practice of making molds the inexpensive way.
This is a great introduction to working with polymer clay, commonly known by its brand name, Sculpey. I borrowed this one from the library and happily I found it at Joann Fabric & Craft store and purchased the paperback for 50% off!! Happy day for this crafter!
This book contains neat projects and how-to guides. However, i think that this is for the more advanced person working with clay. A lot of the projects i felt i didn't want to devote that much time to.
