I started out in banking in the mid 80s in Oklahoma City. I had saved up $6500 from college and had a stock broker call me up. He had a stock that was "poised to move." Silly me, I thought he meant up. I told him to send me the financials to analyze, which he did. It looked pretty good. I invested half my life savings ($3000) in a stock called Kelly-Johnsons. In 6 months, I lost it all. He called and apologized and said he "wanted to make it up to me." What a guy. He said he had an oil stock, they just hit a well, and we got to move fast. I invested the other half of my life savings in Plano petroleum. In 2 weeks it went from 40 to 6.

It was then, I became obsessed with financial planning and investing. Reading everything I could, taking classes, etc. I acquired a passion for financial planning and became and advisor, in 1987.

I have 4 degrees, two from Oklahoma State. A BS in Electrical Engineering, and an MBA. I have two associates degrees from Oklahoma City Community College, in Accounting and Real Estate Investing. Since the start of my sophomore year I paid my way through college.

I'm a CPA and CFP and run a fee-only investment advisory firm for conservative investors.

Pati, Levi and I live in South Oklahoma City and have a place in Stillwater. We enjoy Oklahoma State University sports and spending time in Stillwater.

Money is a sensitive subject for many. However, it is also a necessity in the modern world as one can achieve a lot when their financial situation is secure. In his book The All-Weather Retirement Portfolio: Your Post-Retirement Investment Guide to a Worry-Free Income for Life, author Randy L. Thurman talks about making money and knowing how to save and invest you can have the retirement life you desire. The author gives practical examples and uses a language that the average reader can understand. This financial guide is for individuals that are just starting out planning their retirement, mid-career, and those planning to retire soon. Randy L. Thurman talks to different groups of working-class and entrepreneurs making profits off their investments and gives readers first-hand advice from those who are successful.

The book’s arrangement is systematic and shows a logical progression of the thought process and steps one should follow. The author starts from the root, expounding on the importance of having a healthy bank account and how to save even if it is only a little at the start. To help the reader comprehend his content better, Randy L. Thurman broke down various topics into 15 chapters. Each chapter focuses on one step, making it easier to put the plan into action in their own life.

For a subject as daunting as financial planning is, the author has made reading about the topic interesting and nonintimidating. One of the most valuable topics discussed is the importance of finding a financial advisor that you can trust. Readers will appreciate the author’s attention to detail, listing the qualities one should look for in an advisor. He also emphasizes that readers need to be cautious as not everyone claiming to be a financial advisor is well equipped to handle money. Providing questions to ask so you can find the right advisor for your situation will benefit readers.

The All-Weather Retirement Portfolio: Your Post-Retirement Investment Guide to a Worry-Free Income for Life discusses investing 101 and gives a detailed explanation of how best to invest. This information is beneficial to people in all stages of retirement planning.

If you are a novice to investing, Randy Thurman explains simply the difference between investing for income and investing for wealth. As there are different stages in your life, there are different ways you will invest. The main focus is having what you need for retirement. Through this book you can map out your own plan and strategies for investing, no matter what kind of storm our economy goes through.

The readiness plan quizzes you on how prepared you are for retirement by asking you questions you have been asking yourself for years and surprising you with some you never even thought before now. Thurman uses a client as an example of how he would present what investments are out there for her. He also explains what would not be best for her at this stage in her life and why so you have an educated guess as to how to handle your own investments.

I find this book enlightening, though I have read many books on investments. I feel like he explains it simply because he wants to be helpful to the untrained investor.

‘Help others invest prudently. Conservatively, with balance. So they can enjoy life and not worry about money.’

Oklahoma author Randy L. Thurman, with four degrees to his credit including an MBA from Oklahoma State University, has taught investing, personal finance, and economics at the college level as well as researching and applying investment strategies as founder and co-president of Retirement Investment Advisors, Inc. (RIA). He is considered on of the nation’s Best Financial Advisors. Randy frequently contributes articles on financial planning, investing and business ethics to publications such as CPAFocus, Medical Economics Magazine, NW Style Magazine, Slice, Metro Journal, The Oklahoman and has been a guest on Fox News Network's Fox on Money.

Randy’s premise is shared in his Introductory comments – ‘Imagine how it would feel if you could sail through your retirement years, confident you’d done all you could do to have a worry-free income for life, regardless of the economic storms ahead. Imagine the peace of mind you’d have as you turn 65, 70, 85, and beyond, if you knew your money was working as hard as you did during your working years, so you’d have an inflation-protected income for as long as you live. If I could show you how to create a portfolio that would turn those imaginings into reality, would you be willing to spend a few hours learning how to do it? I’m betting you would—and it’s my belief that you deserve to stop worrying about your future so you can go out and enjoy your retirement. That’s why I’ve created a step-by-step approach to investing your money when it’s time to retire, so you can create what I call an All-Weather Retirement Portfolio.’

In this unique (yes, it is unique in that it is a well researched – and experienced) book Randy strikes the gong on that terrifying aspect of survival after retirement. As he states,’ If you’re already retired, you might feel like investing is one huge gamble. You may feel you should protect your principal no matter what, especially since you don’t really know how many years you’ll need the income it provides. Consequently, you might feel safest investing primarily in certificates of deposit, money markets, or government bonds. These types of investments do offer a guarantee of principal (if you hold on to them until they mature). Unfortunately, the dollars you invest in them don’t hold their purchasing power. And if you live as long as we all hope you’ll live, this is a formula for disaster. In the pages that follow I’ll show you exactly how these investments have fared in the past, when the financial environment was excellent for vehicles like this—and I’ll compare their performance to that of other types of investments available to you.’ His knowledge of the financial aspects of retiring reassure us that his book is wise and well worth heeding. He explains ‘How to invest, no matter what happens in the outside world, to maximize the probability you will have a worry-free income for life. ▪Why investing for income is different from investing to accumulate a retirement fund.’

Randy shares his personal history and divides his book of advice into four parts – Preparing to set sail into all kinds of weather, The longitude and latitude of investing after you retire, Designing your all-weather retirement portfolio. and Ready to set sail (with an advisor you can trust, etc).

Solid, well written very accessible book, this, and finally a reliable guide to surviving in what we all fear to be the 'winter of our discontent': Randy makes the sailing into good weather of retirement available!

These times are actually really hard for the current generation of young adults, several values have disappear sadly and now new generations of teens coming to age are having a hard time regarding on how to organize their money and what can be save and more.
The book that will help you to finally make peace with yourself, knowing you did it right, investing is important to all of us but it’s not everything about your retirement plan. In the future, when you will not receive monthly wages, you will think about what you could had done for that to not be considered a problem, and of course, what really matters is how to invest, not by feelings but opportunities, what benefits you more is where you should aim your income and this book does exactly just that.
There is still a long way for young adults (mostly from my generation) to know what to do with their life and choices and their money, and this book might answers some of the most frightening questions you have to ask, so buy it and read it, organization is a staple for your future and your family.

This book by Randy Thurman is a way to help those who have retired learn how to best make investments in their post-retirement life. It includes helpful steps such as how you can build an incredible portfolio and questions you can ask investors and financial advisors. It also includes steps as to how you can make investments without fear of creating drastic mistakes. The book includes four different parts each with their own focus so you’ll be able to read about many different aspects of this topic.
This book is about 221 pages long so it will require some time to read it. Thurman’s writing style is also very intriguing which makes a somewhat difficult topic to understand a little easier. He includes imagery and interesting stories to help get the point across for many different areas.
If you’re retired and looking to make investments, definitely give this book a try. You’ll learn plenty of helpful advice that can help you succeed.

A very importante topic for your life, no matter what age you are. Retirement is one of the main concerns in adult life. On one hand, we can’t wait to retire to have all the free time to do the things we had to delay over the years. On the other hand, thinking about that period financially can be daunting. Are we saving enough? Are we putting our saves in the right place? What if the markets crash? What if we have an emergency? There are so many diferente ways to analyze it that thinking about it gives us nightmares and headaches. This is a great book to prepare yourself and try to give yourself the best possible future, starting today. There are some very good strategies and advices on how and where to invest your money in order to secure yourself through retirement. Well-written, the book is easy to understand and very helpful. It’s directed to the people who are closer to retirement but I think it’s valuable for anyone.

A plethora of great information.

The All-Weather Retirement Portfolio by Randy Thurman is geared toward those who are retired or nearing retirement but I feel it can also be useful for those who are younger but want to plan for the future as well! Randy Thurman presents a ton of great information on how to plan and make your investments work for you. This is a great book for setting your mind at ease and pushing you closer in the right direction to meet your retirement goals.
It’s a little wordy, but Thurman presents strong investment plans so those who are nearing retirement, planning to retire in the future or even those who are already retired and just looking to create a worry free portfolio that will keep them comfortable for life, can confidently make choices based on what is best for their situation and their goals. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to retire and live comfortably.

The All-Weather Retirement Portfolio is an intelligent book on retirement finance planning. The author Randy Thurman takes much effort to help the readers make the perfect retirement portfolio for themselves. The book is targeted towards new retirees and people who are planning to take a retirement in the next few years because it is based on the current financial market. The author guides the readers in many ways to plan their portfolio such as asking some relevant questions and the type of portfolio that they want. The author strives clarity by giving live examples of his conversation with his clients. The only negative thing about the book was that the introduction was a bit long and the author could have made the book shorter. Still it is a well researched book and highly informative.

I love this book because it give me hope for all those who have not saved for retirement - look it up, its a lot - and I want to send them all this book. I read this book in my 20s so it may be a bit early to begin applying all of these principles but most of them still apply to me and can be practices as I continue to save for retirement.

What I really appreciate about this book is the focal point of being prepared for anything when many are going to feel vulnerable. It helps explain investing concepts in simple terms that allow for seniors to understand them as well as people in their 20s looking to begin investing.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has not given retirement a second thought and are worried about what they will do when the paychecks end.

This book is something everyone should read, and the earlier the better! I like the author has knowledge and experience and knows what he is talking about. He writing is easy to read and understand. He explains how investing works during different periods in your life, such as while you are employed, and after you stop working. He also discusses investing methods that are fail-proof, because financial hits and storms do happen, but your retirement is something that should survive. As a younger individual who still has about 20 years or working life left, I was so glad I found this book, as it has opened my eyes and given me a map of sorts of how I should proceed. I highly recommend it for planning as well as executing a good retirement and at any age.

The “All-Weather Retirement Portfolio” must be read by all! It is absent of hype and full of practical explanations and examples. I liked that the author – R. Thurman – uses his clients (little old ladies) to help in illustrating real life scenarios.

Thurman simplifies the lingo and clearly spells out the recipe to make up a strong retirement and investment portfolio. The advise that he gives is delivered in a clear-cut and humane way that is very helpful. The research is there and he also provides the history of different financial markets and instruments to support his arguments. A very good read.

It is very wise to start planning for retirement as soon as possible, because there is no too early when it comes to that.
This is a very good guide precisely for that. The author lays out some great strategies, lots of excellent tips and advice on investing money, saving up and building what you need for the retirement. It is easy to follow and understand everything he writes about and a lot of it is really common sense advice. But, sometimes you need someone to point it out, even if it is just under your nose the whole time.
This book really is for everyone, I can't think of a person who wouldn't benefit from these advice and investment strategies. Be wise and follow them, I know I will.

Retirement Guide!
The book is based on the topic of investment for retirement, but it focusses on the novice or untrained investor. It explains the difference between investing while you’re working and while you are retired. It answers many questions like how much you should invest, how can you protect your investment from economical changes, life changes and be prepared for the worst in your life. A good resource for anyone and highlights key questions and provide reasonable answers.

The author, an American CFA, provides some useful advice on how to structure your investment portfolio to provide a stable income through even the most turbulent of markets. The book is well-researched and includes detailed instructions about how a 5.7% safe withdrawal rate can be achieved through variable asset allocation tables which are based on historical stock market studies. Personally, I'm not as confident in the American stock market performance continuing to match the last 100 years.

Really Good Strategy for Making Your Money Last

Very well explained. The concept of the perfect storm, especially the fact that the first two years of the retirement period are the worst 2 stock market years since the Great Depression, gives you confidence that the strategy is sound for just about any scenario.

Author seems sincere and trustworthy1

I have been investing in my own stocks for over 30 years and have enjoyed hearing what he had to say about investing. It has helped me to. Improve on the way that I plan to do things. I especially enjoyed his recommendation of other books and information on financial certification of investment employees.

Slow start but solid, specific advice

An interesting book in that it deals with very basic entry level investment advice (e.g defining what a mutual fund is) but also provides very specific guidance based on thorough research for asset sllocations in a post-retirement portfolio.
