"Sometimes, Survival is selfish."

the last story that showed how Rose originally was like and how much she has changed and become more like The Doctor was like a punch to the gut...
The previous Arc had better stories, but this one was more serious and got a bit closer to the events that happened during TV's season 4

Never expected SingleMom!Rose in a coffee shop AU to be canon, and yet here we are. <3

Dark and Rouge Planet are solid 4.5/5 stories. Completely forgot about what happened in Saltwater so uh, let’s say 3/5 lmfao.

I loved this set, especially the last story. It was nice to finally encounter a parallel universe Rose who wasn't a man, an animal, or nonexistent. I know this series only has three sets, but I wish there was more to it. I love seeing how much Rose has matured and become the Doctor in a sense, traveling around the universe trying to save the world with companions of her own--Jackie and/or Clive. Jackie is really awesome in this series as well, providing much needed levity to the dark tone. I would love a series of Jackie saving the world from the Powell Estate.

Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon 2: Other Worlds - 4.167/5 stars

Great continuation of the first series. I can’t wait to see where this goes in the next boxset in 2023. Billie Piper, Camille Coduri and Mark Benton all fall into their roles as Rose, Jackie and Clive.

2.1 Saltwater by Alison Winter - 4.5/5 stars

Rose Tyler saves a parallel earth with two Clives, a scientist world leader and a light show from alien salt miners. This story was really fun and felt fast-paced while also having moments for exploring lightness and darkness.

2.2 Now is the New Dark by AK Benedict - 3./5 stars

Personally, I found this not as strong as the last story but I did have quite a few laughs with this one. Dark ages but in 2010 with a Jack the Ripper esc killer killing the emotional people of London.

2.3 The Rogue Planet by Emily Cook - 5/5 stars

A universe where Clive is a famous university professor and astrologist, Rose is a single mum with a cafe and Jackie is a TV Show host. Hilarious. Dark. Fun. I simply love this series when Jackie gets to hop to different dimensions. With reference to Adipose industries and the three comets from The Voyage of the Damned.

During the baby episode, Clive said he was glad this was audio only, and so was I. But seriously, I may not have enjoyed this as much as the first set, but it was still pretty good. It was pretty obvious that the search for The Doctor would not result in The Doctor appearing, but still an interesting story.

A second set of three stories set during Rose’s search for the Doctor through alternate realities prior to the events of Turn Left. Pete is missing from these ones, perpetually being off-screen somewhere, leaving Jackie and Clive as the main supporting characters. That still leave plenty of opportunities to dive into the Tyler family and how its history might have been different, leaving character at the core of the stories.

Saltwater – The first story follows the standard setup from volume one: Rose arrives in an alternate Earth to find it facing imminent disaster. In this case, there’s a double whammy, with a series of mysterious ship sinkings both threatening the world directly and sparking the potential for nuclear war between finger-pointing nations. As usual, this is tied in with events in Rose’s own family, which here also connect to this world’s version of Clive. It builds on one of the episodes in the previous volume, but puts a twist on it, rather than simply rehashing it in a subtly different setting, as it initially looks like it will. 4 stars.

Now is the New Dark – The next alternate is more radically different from our own universe than we’ve seen previously, having technologically stalled before the Industrial Revolution. Since that makes it obviously not the world Rose is seeking, the story necessarily has to find a way to keep her and Clive (who is travelling with her in this one) around and this is arguably a bit contrived, but it’s worth the pay-off. It feels, of course, rather like a historical Doctor Who story, albeit with the inclusion of an alternate version of Jackie keeping up the general theme of the collection. It’s tied in with pre-scientific theories of disease, and the sinister atmosphere helps keep up the variety in this collection, making this more memorable than another variant Powell Estate would have been. 4.5 stars.

The Rogue Planet – Even more so than the first episode, this focuses on the alternate history of the Tyler family. For the first time, we meet an alternate Rose, and, since Jackie is accompanying her on this trip, she gets to meet her alternate too. This, at least, is something much easier to do on audio than on TV, aided in this case by the actors putting on RP accents rather than using their regular Estuary English. Although a hint as to the nature of the impending disaster is provided before the title music, it’s a while before it becomes relevant, and the story is really about the differences from our world and whether it’s going to be possible to save anyone than it is about the specific apocalypse. The character study of the first part builds into a race against time as the stakes rise, the larger story arc gets a proper mention, and, unlike the previous volume, this one ends on a cliffhanger that leads directly into the next… 4.5 stars.

This was such a lovely surprise which reminded me of all of the reasons Billie Piper and Mark Benton (and Camille Coduri, although I needed no reminding of the genius of Jackie Tyler) were so brilliant and popular. The guest writers are self-established fantasy writers while the final writer is the mastermind behind the swathe of Doctor Who content during the pandemic, Emily Cook.

The series delves deep into Tyler mythology, hopping between alternative universes to see a series of terrifying apocalypses where a number of paths not taken recast the familiar characters in new and surprising roles. I had no interest in the series until I listened to a free episode from doctor who magazine and thank goodness I did. This is such imaginative sci-fi which continues the feel of doctor who whilst constructing an entirely new tone and character. It’s too good for television, the epic scale achieved with such a small core cast really couldn’t be managed visually on a limited budget. I’m also a fan of the decision to delegate all of the major creative roles to young women, a group that clearly lived their formative years in the company of Rose and Jackie and clearly have a much deeper understanding of them than I do.

I have thoroughly enjoyed both series of Rose Tyler the Dimension Cannon.

Rose Tyler has always been a mixed bag for me, but she was the first companion that introduced me to the wonderful world of Doctor Who. I have been disappointed in the ninth doctor range, but the Rose Tyler series has really taken me by surprise.

I actually love stories featuring Parallel worlds, hence why Gallifrey: Series 4 is my favourite in the Gallifrey range, so I was already sucked in by the idea.

It also actually makes a nice change where they are not actually saving the world, but other versions of themselves / loved ones.

I also love the Jackie/Rose/Clive trio.

Big Finish is really giving us the single mum Rose Tyler who works in a coffee shop AU and I'm living for it.

Saltwater 3/5
Now is the new dark 3.5/5
The rogue planet 4.5/5

Oh the twelve and rose parallels get crazy here. Twelve staying in a confession dial to for ages to save clara and rose jumping through universes to find the doctor. What made me think of this parallel was how someone literally confronted rose that she was doing all of it for a man just like how ashildr (I refuse to call her me) confronted twelve.

4.5/5

Properly loved The Rogue Planet. Got goosebumps, loved all the links to series four and Turn Left. Saltwater was good too, loved the ending. Now is the New Dark was probably the weakest story for me, still good, just not to the same standard. Really loving these audiodramas. Cannot believe I waited so long to listen to them.
