1 bookBen Rao is an author, life-long entrepreneur, philanthropist and senior care advocate who lives in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
Ben was raised in Louisville, Kentucky by his stepfather Tom and his mother Peela, who devoted 40 years in not-for-profit senior services. Ben experienced first-hand the emotional and financial struggle that families face when he was unexpectedly confronted with the reality of transitioning Tom into senior care. He was challenged by the lack of direction and resources available for a process that nearly all of us will eventually need to go through. That experience inspired Ben to use his personal and professional experience in the long-term care industry to help families transition their loved ones into senior care.
Ben lives with his wife, Rhonda, and their two children, Maddy and Charlie, in a renovated historic building that was once the Lee’s Summit Hospital and the Dayton Hotel in Downtown Lee’s Summit. He developed Lee’s Summit’s first entrepreneurial incubator and office space in a formerly vacant post office. He works there alongside his trusty sidekick, Charlie dog, a border collie who has gone to the office with him every day for the last 10 years. Getting your arms around a complex subject!
I am in my 50s, a physician, and my parents are aging well, but all of our needs change with time and age. Long term care becomes necessary for many, yet it remains a bit mysterious. How can you know what to do when you or your loved one suddenly needs more than independent living? What is the plan? Ben Rao answers these questions. He breaks his e-book into 3 sections, the first of which defines the various people roles along with the many long term care options. He gives examples and various situations to facilitate understanding. Then he moves to sections 2 and 3 with payment options, and implementation of plans. He lays it all out very well and offers additional resources on a corresponding web site. I found this book very helpful and motivational. As a result, I plan to begin conversing with my spouse, sibling, and aging parents about some of these topics, and I will use this book and the web site. This book definitely helped me to better understand the issues surrounding long term care of many types. I would strongly recommend this E-book to those who have aging parents, folks who are approaching their 60’s and 70’s. With some better understanding and planning, much of the crisis mode in making decisions regarding long term care can be averted.
