Dog Food on the WILD Side! Raw feeding is the hottest topic in dog care today. You may have heard about the “BARF” diet—Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods. Learn why and how to feed your dog this new (but really OLD) diet.
Dog owners are asking how they can feed their canine pal like their wild ancestors—uncooked, unprocessed, RAW meat, bones and veggies--instead of those boring “kibble krunchies”.
Raw Dog Make It Easy for You and Your Dog explains in simple, friendly and understandable terms the logic behind this approach. Author Carina MacDonald, in this fun and slightly irreverent book, shows you how feeding your dog a raw diet can be effective, economical, and easy for you, and healthy for your dog.
Learn how to make it work for your dog…and you!
What reviewers are saying... This is a useful and very user-friendly primer on practical ways to feed dogs raw foods. Dr. W. Jean Dodds, DVM, Lecturer, Canine Health Expert
Her easygoing writing style makes this an enjoyable and educational tale. A self proclaimed fanatic when it comes to her dogs' health, she dove into the raw food debate and did her own research, which led to her conversion to this eating program. For anyone considering this dietary approach, MacDonald provides a good starting point. Terry Peters, reviewer, North Shore News, Vancouver B.C.
Food can be fun and if you like to laugh in the kitchen, you'll enjoy the raw humor in this book. Kymythy R. Schultze, CCN, AHI author of Ultimate Natural Nutrition For Dogs and Cats
First impressions of the presentation and style are entirely favourable. I think Carina has advanced the cause of raw feeding and dog owners will like the book. Tom Lonsdale DVM, author of Raw Meaty Bones
Just finished reading Carina's book and am impressed. I have been feeding raw for over five years and can identify with the struggle people go through when first starting to feed raw. Carina's book is excellent for someone changing to raw. It gives good advice, menus to follow, innovative ideas and a sense of confidence that will certainly be helpful to the first time raw feeder. Wish it had been available when I started feeding raw. Carol Burke, Breeder, Darrlburg Rottweilers
Carina (MacDonald) has taken the mystery and confusion out of raw feeding with her book Raw Dog Food. Make It Easy For You and Your Dog. This is a great reference for anybody new to feeding raw, and it's especially helpful for anyone who is intimidated by the whole idea. Carina's direct, refreshing style makes for easy reading, and her straight-forward advice and menu ideas will make feeding raw a piece of cake! Linda Walker, Breeder, Sunapee Akitas
This was a convincing argument for raw feeding and the book was down to earth and made the raw diet seem very doable. I am not up for even 2-4 hours a month of meal prep and all the clean up time/worry about bacteria with four kiddos, but maybe as they get older this will be something we consider.
THE best beginning book for feeding raw. We are foolish to think that we have domesticated wolves insides as well. Dogs are wired to eat raw meat and almost all commercial dog foods are crap. This book answers all your questions.
This is a very basic "get to know raw feeding" book. It will likely not be useful to those who are already raw feeding, however, it is a nice beginner's resource.
Quick and simple book on getting started doing a DIY raw diet for dogs. This book isn't overwhelming and has a practical approach to raw feeding. I've read a lot of books and info out there about raw feeding dogs and it can be scary and overwhelming and some info can be downright conflicting. This book has the general approach of 80/10/10 but does a more balance over time approach rather than balance every meal. This makes a raw diet more doable and realistic and less intimidating.
Although there is some info I don't use (feeding veggies and fruit regularly), this is a very good intro for beginners wanting to feed their dog a raw diet. True, most of the info can be found online, but this is a good start. The author also includes a lot of references/resources at the end of the book for those wanting to learn more.
Very basic book. I've been raw feeding for a few months so maybe that is why this all seemed a little Mickey Mouse to me. I don't know, I just expected a bit more info behind the "whys" of feeding different meals. For example the author feeds 20-25% veggies/eggs/other. So, there is a big difference nutritionally between an egg and a vegetable. It seems too often raw feeding books/articles/websites promote a "Well, just feed a bit of different stuff and your dog will be healthy!" The concept is that we don't micromanage our own diets so why micromanage our dogs. In theory this sounds good but as more an more human illnesses are being linked to poor diet and more and more people are realizing that perhaps they do need to pay closer attention to just what they are getting out of the food they eat I think it is safe to assume that perhaps our dogs' diets do need at least a little bit of micromanaging.
You know how people have daily recommended intakes? Why is it pretty much impossible to find this info for dogs?
For people new to raw feeding this is a great primer on the whys and hows of feeding a raw diet. No topic is taboo, not even poop, and everything is discussed in straight up terms. Balance over time is the biggest thing for people to take away - nothing needs to be balanced daily. I like the additional resources lusted at the end of the book, along with the sample meal plan for a week. If you're considering feeding raw, or even already feeding it and are looking for ideas, check out this book. I highly recommend it.
I'm actually on my second read of this book, skimmed through it when we first adopted Loki and I discovered that he's been on a mostly-raw diet. Overwhelmed with all of the information out there, I found a great yahoo group which steered me in the right direction toward Carina's fabulous book. She simplifies the whole process and makes feeding this way seem much more do-able! Loki's really happy with his diet and I'm actually starting to enjoy the sound of bones crunching, lol!
The author appears to have really done her research. Her writing is upbeat and easy to read and comprehend. A very small, yet concise book to get you started on feeding your dog a BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet.
An excellent manual for feeding raw. The author takes a no-nonsense approach and gives the practical little details that are great to know before starting. It seems like it would be a great resource for those feeding/wanting to feed their dog a raw diet.
A wonderful book for preparing your own raw dog food - I always recommend this one to beginners. Short, easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to use.
