Filled with compelling stories, expert advice, and stunning National Geographic photography, this comprehensive guide features extraordinary destinations for divers who like to travel, divers traveling with non-diving companions, and travelers who are passionate about the ocean. Dive travel experts Carrie Miller and Chris Taylor traveled to 50 inspirational locations around the world―spending more than 250 hours underwater―to bring you this one-of-a-kind guidebook. In these rich and inviting pages, you will find travel stories and practical tips to make the most of your next adventure. · Marvel at manta rays and dragons in Komodo; · Explore the hiking and diving paradise of Saba in the Caribbean; · Dive in with white sharks and whale sharks in Australia; · Discover shipwrecks and sand dunes in North Carolina’s Outer Banks; · Learn martial arts and shore-dive in Okinawa, Japan; · Linger in the land and sea gardens of Bormes-les-Mimosas, France; · Road-trip around the marine reserves and coastal towns of New Zealand’s North Island; · And so much more! There is a purpose to these extraordinary travel conservation through exploration. To that end, each location highlights a global issue―from the necessity of protecting remarkable ecosystems like coral reefs and mangroves, to sea turtle and shark conservation―and suggests ways you can learn more and get involved. Whether you’re dreaming of your next dive holiday or looking to travel the world a little differently, this guide will inspire you to get out and explore―above and beneath the surface!
THE GOOD: Covers areas all over the globe. Decent amount of pictures. Nicely similar page set-up style used regularly in each section. Some great tidbits about places to stay and to eat.
THE BAD: Should have been titled Conservation and Sustainability Efforts at Dive Locations. Good info, but not why I’m here. Some sections better about speaking to actual dives than others.
This guide is very near and dear to my heart as a lifelong certified scuba diver myself! This THICC 350-page guide features forty-nine total diving destinations across the world accompanied by BREATHTAKING photography in true National Geographic quality and expert advice from diving fanatics Carrie Miller & Chris Taylor. Even if you don’t enjoy diving and water, you are able to armchair travel to the immersive depths of the ocean with this one. 🐠
5 ⭐️. A must-have for us divers and would make a great Christmas or other special occasion gift for the divers or travel/water enthusiasts in your life! I also highly recommend “100 Dives of a Lifetime” by National Geo.
Thank you so much to National Geographic and TLC Book Tours for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review!
western biased, many top diving places with successful marine protection not mentioned at all but loads listing for the US and Australia.
Also want to add, no one in the world in their right mind would write about meeting a German whose grandfather was a Nazi and how they went to this grandfather’s grave to remember his life, but the author did it for Japanese Nazi. And no one would say amazing peace memorial where the names of the Jews who died in concentration camps were listed together with the Germans who gassed them. But the author laid praise on such a peace memorial in Japan.. maybe the authors should also read some history if they want to write about that angle in their books.
This book does contain the stunning photos one would expect from a National Geographic Guide, but I was hoping for more nature, more endemic species. Instead this book focuses as much on what to do when you are on land as when you are on the water. There are plenty of other guides to check out if that was what I wanted. When I pick up a book titled A Diver's Guide to the World, I want to read about the underwater places I'll discover.
As a travel guide it is still lacking. Because it talks about so many destinations one only gets glimpses of each place in the handful of pages devoted to each locale.
This book is a wonderful travel resource, not only for diving, but it includes on land sites, dining recommendations, and even lodging options for high/medium/budget travelers. Not to mention the gorgeous photos!
