What if there was a simple explanation for the turbulence and challenges of your twenties? What if every obstacle you faced, whether in love, your career or in your own relationship to your self, had a greater purpose all along?
In Saturn Returns, Caggie Dunlop and astrologer Noura Bourni, unpack the astrological phenomenon that holds the answers to these all-important questions.
Your Saturn Return occurs in your late twenties as the planet Saturn re-enters the position it was in when you were born. This transit is considered an essential time of reckoning and renewal, and an opportunity to step into your higher self. For Caggie Dunlop this period of her life was she realised that the shifts and redirections she experienced were not failures or losses, but part of a necessary initiation into adulthood.
Inspired by her hugely popular podcast, Saturn Returns helps you to see the meaning in the madness of your twenties. Through personal stories, expert advice, and reassuring exercises, Caggie empowers readers to embrace their own spiritual journey. With chapters on relationships, self-worth and finding hope in the darkness, this is a book about welcoming change in all its forms and learning to love and accept yourself along the way.
I'm in my late twenties. This book happened to be the right book at the right time for me. Comforting, empowering, and gives lots of spiritual insights. This book is part-memoir and I can relate to many of Caggie's experiences. You don't need to believe in astrology to read this book, I don't.
Quarter-life crisis, mid-life crisis, Saturn Return, whatever you like to call it, any period in your life, if you're going through "the dark night of the soul", or want to understand someone who is, read this book.
DNF @ 35%. Strong concept, strong potential, weak execution. I found the writing to be repetitive and all of the asides to be tremendously distracting.
After a point, all self help books tend to sound the same but this one was refreshingly different. I liked how Caggie was reflecting back on her own experiences whilst giving advice rather than just giving life advice that feels generic. She is also aware of her privilege and it doesn’t feel forced down your throat. I liked that it felt more like a work book with sections to journal and reflect (although useless if you have a kindle), the headings were clear and I’ll definitely be flicking back on the different sections I’m sure will all come up during my Saturn return :)
This book came just at the right time in my life and shed light on what has felt like a new chapter of being for me. I appreciate not everyone is spiritual or lives life through the lens of astrology, but this book can still be appreciated if you view it as a vehicle for understanding yourself better. The only downside for me was that it was a bit too anecdotal of the author’s personal experience.
I didn’t know who Caggie was when I picked up this book. To learn she had been on Made in Chelsea and grew up posh/upper class. That did put me off (I grew up working class, lived in poverty from 18 to 28): what possible insight could someone so privileged have that would be useful for me? Something I’m working on at the moment…to see people as individuals more. Well, I found Caggie to have strong self awareness about her privileges. The book is a nice starter to working though who you are, your past, traumas, addressing physical and mental health, relationships (like that platonic connection got such a strong mention). I didn’t find it taught me much, because I’ve gone through so much intensity and have been working intensely on myself since 24 (now 29). All the issues raised, for approaching 30. I’ve already worked through. As a doctor once said to me age 25 - you will thrive in your 30s, as the level of stress you’ve been through already in life is not typical. You will be more together than many peers. But I enjoyed the book. Caggie’s honesty and warm tone of voice. Astrology has been a major part of my tools to understand myself in the past 5 years. For me, this book was like a comforting confirmation that the doctor, was right.
It took me way too long to get through this audio book, and as an avid astrologer this book did not deliver the in-depth insights and analysis I was hoping however Caggie’s interpretation and reflections were genuine and I think this book would be a good jumping off point for a lot of people new to the concepts.
This book is one of those books that somehow finds its way into your life at the right time. When 27 rolled around this year I felt a sense of change, but it wasn't a change that felt superficial it was one of those deep callings that has you feeling at a crossroads. It was that oddly unsettling feeling where your decisions from 18-26 come crashing down and forces you to start taking stock of your life and compile your experiences in a way to ensure your next steps are done with thought and care. While all books within this genre should be approached with an open mind and not to be taken too literal in my opinion it can be a helpful guide to kickstart inward reflection. Dispersed with Caggies own anecdotes from relationships, heartbreak, personal and professional roadblocks it feels like an older sister talking to you, gently reminding you to above all be kind too yourself.
This book is not to be consumed in a quick manner, having started reading it in June I only just finished it in December..why? Parts of the book can be confronting and I was not either in the right mood or mindset to really gauge what was trying to be explained if this happens I would recommend sitting with what you have read, journal or meditate on it. As the old proverbial goes slow and steady wins the race. Praise Caggie Dunlop and Saturn Returns.
I thought to myself, “could I be an astrology girly?” But this book taught me I’m not. She did have some great passages on navigating change through 20s/30s!
“There’s nothing less relatable than perfection … the thing that really unifies us and connects us in a way that we truly desire is what we seek to avoid … it’s our struggle and our pain … it’s how we alchemise our pain that brings both us and others joy … not denying or hiding from it.”
Loved this. Lots of easily digestible wisdom and relatable feelings. As always Caggie leaves me feeling like I'm not alone.
Cool to learn a bit more about astrology's history and practice too. It feels like such a lost art but it's definitely having a revival. I like that it gives us more understanding of both the personal and collective realms, and situates us within this vast universe with a sense of destiny and purpose beyond our egos. "If nothing else, it can be a great tool for self-awareness and self-mastery". A dance between fate and free will.
"Astrology's uniqueness is that it's both deeply personal yet simultaneously unifying"
Onto Saturn - it's return is fundamentally about showing us who we are, confronting our realities and manifesting our long-held ideas into the material world. It's shadow side manifests as fear, willing us to turn back. Stay strong and keep walking your true path.
"The pain and experiences we go through are a necessary process in order to become something beautiful. Like the pressure of the hand that sculpts the clay, this is the process of our becoming."
"The best things come in unexpected ways when we stop forcing and start trusting". When we stop trusting ourselves and the Universe, we hand over our authority, for fear of responsibility. Conversely, taking authority builds this trust.
"When a relationship ends, there's always an opportunity to deepen our relationship with ourselves. When one love goes, does self-love remain?" I feeeeel this. "We often seek the love we wish we could give ourselves"
"You can't experience the depths of love and bypass the possibility of pain"
"Pay more attention to how your life feels rather than how it looks to others"
In relationships remember that you are not responsible for another's happiness or healing. Conscious partnership requires freedom and we will always have different needs and desires. Taking too much responsibility for another eventually leads to resentment. "We have to give ourselves and others permission to be our fullest expression of self and trust the space in between."
On parents: "if we can lean into our heart space and have compassion for those who raised us, if we can recognise their limitations based on their upbringing, we can begin to heal generationally". Saturn return helps you step up and stop seeking parental validation, becoming your own authority.
Finally: "slowly is the fastest way to get to where you need to be"
I recently came upon the concept of “Saturn Returns” when my eyebrow technician (who is a fellow spiritualist) was listening to one of my rants and stopped me with “wait — you’re in your late twenties? You’re going through your Saturn Return, that’s why you feel this way”. Wow, what a realisation that was!
I was then introduced to Caggie’s Saturn Returns podcast which I 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 and so I was super excited to read her accompanying book!
For anyone who isn’t aware, your Saturn Return occurs when Saturn returns to the exact zodiac sign, degree and house it was in at the time of your birth. This cycle takes between 27 and 29.5 years and Saturn transits each sign for 2.5 years, meaning you experience your Saturn Return between the ages of 27 and 31. This process can bring a lot of intense self-exploration (good & bad) and can be referred to as your “true coming of age”.
My Saturn Return has definitely been insightful and I’m not quite out of the other side yet! I’m really grateful to Caggie for producing a “handbook” of sorts to help to navigate Saturn returning. Everybody’s experience is different but it really helps to have a greater understanding of the topic!
I loved the inclusion of the instructions on how to read your birth chart (for me: Saturn sits in the sixth house, in the sign of Aquarius at 24 degrees) but I would perhaps have appreciated a little more depth around this - perhaps a chapter solely devoted to reading and understanding your chart, rather than a subchapter.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who is about to start or is currently going through their Saturn Return!
As an astrology lover, I really wanted to adore this book. It delved into the concept of one’s ‘Saturn Return’ as a way of understanding the chaos of our late twenties. In the beginning, it offered me comfort as an idea and seemed a genuinely interesting astrological phenomena that I was keen to unravel. 200 hundred pages later, the repeated calls to ‘hold space’ lost their poignancy and the intertwining of Caggie’s personal anecdotes with astrologer Noura Bourni’s specialist insight became increasingly disparate.
Nonetheless, there is a lot of heart and vulnerability in this text which is commendable - I just wonder if it is most effective in the original podcast format, rather than needing a whole book.
I listened to the audiobook version of this as my attention span is wack, I had no idea what a saturn return was or who Caggie Dunlop was before reading this book and although i won’t be experiencing it for another 9 years, i feel like everyone could benefit from hearing the advice given. Caggie has such vast experiences and her positive outlook on life is infectious, the last two chapters especially provide brilliant advice on how to break away from negative cycles and better understand your worth and implementing boundaries. I would say however that if you are a fan of Caggie, you will get more out of this book as it is part autobiographical.
Super interesting! I heard about Saturn return and wanted to instantly learn more as I’m 28 and feel a lot of change if happening in my life right now. This was one of the first books I found about this subject and it was a great starting point to learn about Saturn return. Loved the insights into what it means for you dependant on the house and sign Saturn was in when you were born. It for me hooked as I really resonated! Would still like to learn more about this subject but for sure would recommend this book!
Had a rough reading through once saw in Te Puke library. Got some good tips especially for the 2nd Saturn Square which is my age group now, certainly makes lots of sense. Looking ahead for the next Saturn opposite which is usually known as Midlife Crisis (44yrs), better really grab the opportunity before hand. Plus, the author’s life experiences and mindsets (vastness of emotions) feel a lot like mine, hmm.
Comforting reading this after my Saturn Return. The ages of 27-30 have been transformational for me, particularly last year as 2022 was my ACTUAL Saturn Return. I've come out the other side happier and more aligned than ever, so if you're going through yours now, know that everything is happening for a reason and it's all for your highest good.
a really interesting introduction into understanding your own saturn placements (if you're into astrology - this is fascinating - if you aren't, this is still a great book) - also just touches on some really thoughtful themes relating to being in your 30s, a woman, and trying to figure out how to show up authentically. A lovely quiet read - would recommend.
I loved this so so much. It adds so much insight and meaning to turbulent times and offers a little bit of comfort when times get tough. I feel like I have a deeper understanding of myself after reading this through exercises like discovering your human design and learning how to read your chart. Also love the podcast, if you love the book then you’ll love that too!
Very quick read. I found this book right in the middle of my Saturn return, when my life had been turned upside down. Everything I’d built (great relationship, life abroad, career, home) was being unearthed and I was dramatically redirected toward another path. This book is helping me view these changes from another perspective and embrace them with excitement.
Most of the astrological information is in the first few chapters. From there, it spirals into autobiography/self help book that seems to lose direction. At one point, she talks about finding your purpose but doesn't mention the north node, which is supposed to be the astrological positioning for your life purpose. Otherwise, easy reading and some nice journal prompts.

If you’re in the same phase of life as the author, it’s a really meaningful book. Like a genuine friend telling you about a shared experience. Really beautiful and heart felt book of a women’s experience growing up and using the “Saturn Return” as the framework for what happens to you when you turn 30.
This book found me at the right time! I read it all in one sitting whilst waiting for a delayed flight, a physical manifestation of chaos. The astrological aspect of the book might not be for everyone but I thought it was a lovely little book and I applaud Caggie for her vulnerability.
I really enjoyed the concept of the book and it felt very in tune with what I’m feeling now in my late 20s. However, I feel like I could’ve stopped reading after the first half and still could’ve taken the same things away. Last half felt more autobiographical and I lost interest.
There was not as much information on Saturn Returns and astrology as I had hoped but a lot of her personal experience. It was interesting and relateable at some points, but not what I was looking for.
It’s not a bad book, but it’s just not particularly well written. There’s some nice exercises in here for helping you to work through one’s Saturn Return, but ultimately I think it’s probably just a bit too out there for me
Finished the audio book in 3 days and I loved every part of it. Her voice is so gentle. Really helped me understand what to expect and how to cope with my Saturn returning and just general things you experience in your twenties. Can’t recommend this book enough
