Because if you claim to be able to speak Italian often enough, eventually you will encounter someone who is willing and able to expose your lie. If, in that excruciating moment, your fight instinct kicks in (as mine often does) you will probably shout made-up Italian words at them, and accuse them of insulting your cat. This sort of reaction on your part can lead to bruised feelings, bruised facial muscles, assault charges, and maybe, just maybe, a lifelong friendship.

To avoid all of that messiness, I suggest you learn to speak Italian. Here is a book. I only gave it four stars because in order to use this book you will require an English-Italian dictionary and a book of Italian Verb Conjugations. Also someone who can teach you to pronounce Italian. Auguri!
