Do you have a college student in your life?
If you do, at some point they are probably going to be severely stressed by the process of finding their first career position. If you have that person in your life, let me recommend you share with them my colleague Shirley Morrison's new book From Classroom to Career.
This book is almost like 2 separate "owner's manuals" for an early career professional. Chapters 1 - 5 are literally a step-by-step guide on how to find a great job in the 21st Century. Shirley walks you through her journey and if you JUST do the things she did, you'll increase your odds of landing in the right role immeasurably.
Chapters 6 - 12 pick up when you have started your career and provide you with examples and guidance on how to navigate the waters of this adventure you have undertaken. This book combined with Gorick Ng's book The Unspoken Rules should be on the desk of EVERY early career professional for daily reference.
My favorite bit of advice comes from the chapter on How to Reach your Career Ambitions. In it, Shirley shares advice she received from a colleague "Use the company to your advantage." Initially this may sound crass but the point is if your organization offers you benefits like employee stock purchases, training, tuition reimbursement, or wellness benefits, take advantage of them. They have been provided for you, so don't leave them on the table since they will benefit you both in the short and long term.
I was a first-generation college student and I only wish someone had handed me this book way back then. It may not have changed the trajectory of my life, but it certainly would have put me in greater control of it.
