Quest For The Lost World is the fulfillment of Brian Blessed's childhood dream, a dream of reaching and exploring the plateau of Mount Roraima. Myth and legend highlight the stunning reality of Brian's epic journey as he discovers Conan Doyle's Lost World. Beautifully illustrated, the book transports the reader into a mysterious primeval landscape in the heart of Venezuela. Born in South Yorkshire, Brian Blessed has achieved great acclaim as an actor, writer, and explorer. In Quest For The Lost World, he must use all his skills to tackle and record the challenges he meets.
whilst this is a great read about pursuing an adventure. it was intersting that having acheived it Brian felt a sense of dissapointment. to be fair to brina he puts this in his epilogue. The main book itself reads as a triumph. from brians eraly days dreaming of adventure to the pursuit of climbing mountains and finally onto realsising his dream. Brians voice resounds thriough this volume as if he was spekaing to you in conversation. i recommend this to anyone its just a shame that this adventure was tinged with anti-climactic sadness for its author.
Have always wanted to read/listen to this book, having heard about it online years ago. Just recently I found it brand new on Cassette in a charity shop, and was delighted (fortunately I still have Cassette players around). So this review is on the audiobook abridged copy of this book.
I must say I was very pleasantly surprised at how good this was. It combines an autobiography with adventure, with even some Cryptozoology aspects & references.
The main theme of the book is Brian's love of the Book 'The Lost World' and his childhood love of Dinosaurs (sounds like me), and the real world location of it (Venezuela, South America) and his quest to one day go there.
Really loved hearing about his childhood, with him dreaming and visualizing Dinosaurs & their prehistoric world (REALLY sounds like me!), and his obsession with The Lost World, even getting into trouble because of it (ok that doesn't sound like me), and the many interesting people around his life. And later on going on many adventures around the world in some truly inhospitable locations really gave me a great deal of respect to him.
Brian narrates the book himself, and is one of the best I've ever heard read audiobooks, he did many different voices & accents which added more life & atmosphere to the book. The abridgement seemed really good, I may have missed some interesting parts, but what was here I absolutely loved.
Brian Blessed is an excellent author, his books great to read, and I really enjoy them, will read more of them. He shares his adventures and his life in an amazing way. Wonderful pictures - so full of life - I have seen a different character as I have read his story!
an excellent read, energetic and wrapped up in the story of how he was captivated by the idea of jungle exploration as a young boy and finally got to live his dream
I'm a massive fan of Brian Blessed and his personality and enthusiasm really come through in his writing. Having read turquoise Mountain previously I was looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint, you get a real feeling for the places he's visits and you find yourself wanting to see them and face the challenges yourself.
A rollicking tale of the actor and nature-lover's journey to the "lost world" of Roraima in south America, to fulfil one of his childhood dreams. My only quibbles: too short and ends abruptly. I hope he will write much, much more in years to come.
Oh Brian Blessed, my hero. His unquenchable desire to grab life unceremoniously by the lapels, fervently shake every possible experience out of it's pockets, and then collect them all up and run back gleefully to show anyone who will listen what he found.... I love him.
The secret with Brian Blessed is perhaps that in spite of his advanced years he still seems to retain a strong sense of childlike wonder about the world, which is also incredibly infectious and inspiring! This account of his adventures into the heart of Roraima in South America is a bustling journey packed with drama, detail and excitement, that will leave you wanting to read more about his other travels.
