"Mommy is what I did so wrong. . . that you had to do this? I'll be good now so don't cry mommy-"
-Jin
So rarely do I give out 5 stars, yet I eagerly gave this one to Bastard Vol. 5. The story begins with high stakes as truths are revealed and Kyun and Jin's relationship is tested. It's heartwarming to see how Kyun gives Jin a reason to fight for, how she gives him the courage to change. Having grown up in a life absent of love, riddled with trauma, and trapped in this secret, Jin's childhood was one that no one should experience.

The final part of the story is written, with numbing shades, emotional conflict, and a powerful conclusion. As Kyun is taken, Jin is forced to face his father once and for all. Being in Jin's mind is like mirrors parallel to each other, constantly reflecting, shadows whispering at the corners, and chains dragging him to the bottom. His trauma is finally revealed from under the delusions that he put up with to cope. It's startling to see that there was more to the story than I could ever have predicted.

I was honestly disappointed in Manny at the end of his character arc, and while his pain and struggle were brilliantly written, I was sad to see how this affected Jin's relationship with him. Jin processes years of heartache, years of trauma, and years of filling in the love he should have received from his parents with bitterness. There are scenes that make the reader feel trapped in his mind as his conscience repeats words again and again. "Coward coward coward demon demon demon murderer murderer murderer." This dissection of the psychological manipulation, the descent into darkness, and the twisted craving for revenge makes the story all the more intriguing.

His relationship with Dongsoo, his father, is one of the most memorable I have ever seen. Dongsoo's words pierce like knives, so masterful at manipulation that even I found myself questioning how I comprehended events, how Jin comprehended events . Suddenly, I find myself questioning if Jin is an unreliable narrator. I felt myself solemn when viewing the startling truth about Jin's past memory. The panels made it feel like a scene from a movie, as the slow transformation of Jin's expression also metaphorically represents the sudden change from innocence to realization. Perhaps the loss of one eye represents a change in his perspective, in how he viewed the world.

Dongsoo is a character written for the readers to hate. While I still hated him to some extent, as the reader, it was definitely compelling to see parts of him that were still humane. In some twisted way, Dongsoo is driven to protect  The end of his character arc is one that is very powerful. There is a flashback showing the significance of the painting that played a big part in both their lives, titled: Something about the last couple of scenes with him in them was drawn in such a way that it felt like a scene from a movie, something that made the experience more immersive.

In the end, the ending was satisfying without being predictable, and it ended in a way different than I first thought it would have been. Managing to be both bittersweet and hopeful, Jin was a phenomenal protagonist to follow on this journey.

"I never knew forgiveness was such a cruel thing."
        -Dongsoo

"Bastard" by Youngchan Hwang is a gripping manhwa that had me hooked from start to finish. Having enjoyed the author's previous work, "Sweet Home," I eagerly delved into this story and was once again impressed. Despite its brevity, the impact of the narrative stayed with me, even though I wished for a more extensive conclusion. Nonetheless, the concise storytelling effectively conveyed a sense of awe and kept me engaged throughout.

To say that I loved "Bastard" would be an understatement—I adored it. The characters in this manhwa were absolutely extraordinary. My heart went out to Jin, the protagonist, this boy needs a Moment of appreciation for real! I genuinely hoped that he would find happiness and solace with Kyun, as they truly deserved the best life could offer.

Youngchan Hwang's writing style is a true gem. The author has a remarkable ability to delve into the inner workings of the characters' minds, offering a profound exploration of their thoughts and emotions. This quality sets Hwang apart and adds a compelling layer to the storytelling. I was completely absorbed in the characters' psychological landscapes, eagerly turning each page to uncover their motivations and inner turmoil.

Discovering that the author has no other works, I somehow feel a bit void. This manhwa speaks volumes about Twang's talent and the impact their storytelling had on me. I sincerely hope that Youngchan Hwang continues to create more captivating tales in the future. The author's style resonates perfectly with my preferences, and I eagerly await further narratives that explore the complexities of the human psyche in such a compelling manner.

In conclusion, "Bastard" left an indelible mark on my heart. It is a masterfully crafted manhwa that skillfully weaves together suspense, emotion, and psychological depth. Youngchan Hwang's ability to portray the inner struggles of the characters is remarkable, making their journey an unforgettable experience. I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming Kdrama adaptation, excited to see this gripping story come to life on screen. To put it simply, "Bastard" holds a special place in my heart—I loved it wholeheartedly.

The premise was very nice from the beninging. But then nothing really happened for a while and it was stretched out. In the end it was really tense though and the ending was alright.

That was such a disappointing ending, everything was great until the last couple of chapters
Lowkey scrapped the WEBTOON for me

Like his dad saying « I never Intended to kill you, it was all in your favour ». My brother in Christ how many times have u punched that kid? I honestly think this excuse is bullcrap and he was able to manipulate his kid one last time

I think its mostly a me problem with the whole dynamic of « forgiving ur abuser is the only way u can move on »
I’m really not vibing with that at all

Finished the whole webtoon and I'm very impressed by the story. I read a lot of webtoon, but it's my first thriller/horror genre webtoon and it's one of my favorite.

I really love the art style which suits the thriller genre. The plot and the pacing were very good with a lot of suspense and action.
The main character is very complex and I was rooting for him to protect the girl.
The girl, Kyun Yoon was overly naive that it was sometimes frustrating, but she and Jin were very cute together.
The dad was very creepy and he can manipulate so easily in all situations because of his social statue and the fake nice guy role he is playing outside.

I still love the art style and the backstory was not necessarily surprising but still captivating to read; the father and Jin are still the best characters by far — but I can't help but feel like the ending was kind of anticlimactic.

To put it simply: it was a masterpiece. From beginning to the end. I knew it would be great, because the plot had me from the very first chapters, but I was definitely not prepared to read such a deep, heart-wrenching yet comforting story.

I often start my reviews with a summary of the plot before exposing my opinion, but I cannot do that with Bastard. A huge twist happens early in the story, and I would rather let people discover it the same way I did. Having no expectations, no clue of what the resume is, no idea of what it is about before starting was the best thing I did. If you come across this critique and have not read this manhwa yet, this is my tip: start without skimming the synopsis!

This author is so good at this, I have felt it for Sweet Home too. Pity. A strong feeling of pity towards the main character. I love when the protagonist tries their best, thrives on hope, perseveres, even though their life or situation is hard, to say the least – a more accurate adjective would be tragic. Jin is that main character. In a world where no one understands him, where only he knows the truth a demon tries to hide, where he is unable to physically protect his loved ones due to serious health issues, where he struggles to make friends, where he gets rejected by people he thought appreciated him, where all the weight is on his shoulders only… he still finds a way to cling on life. And he fights.

It almost feels as if I have read poetry instead of a Webtoon. To me, it was an illustrated poetic prose that made me have the impression of being involved in this chaotic mess. The tension was so intense that, whenever the situation got worse for Jin or his life was threatened, I literally felt sick to my stomach. It was as if I went through the protagonist’s hardships along with him. Sometimes, the strain was so unbearable that I had to pause before resuming the chapter.

To say that I love Jin and Kyun would be an understatement. At first, I did not really like Kyun because she would always call Jin’s feelings into question when it came to his father; however, in the end, I have to admit that her reactions were only normal. She’s a very realistic character, with a pure soul and a strong willpower to do what is good. Her trust in Jin really warmed my heart. They’re both incredible characters.

The father, in the other hand… I have not felt this disgust towards an antagonist for a long time. A manipulator, a traitor, a groomer, a p*dophile, a stalker… and a murderer. The list is not even exhaustive. Jin’s fear towards his father is shared with the reader, who starts fearing him and calling him a demon, the same way Jin does. The father was so good at gaslighting his own son that he almost had me in the end.

Spoiler: I do not believe in the slightest that his father ever cared for him. If he did, he would have never implied his own son in this mess and ruin his life like he did. To me, he simply took advantage of his own son’s gullibility, just like he exploited his son’s weaknesses earlier in the story with Kyun.

Other spoiler: Manny Kim… I used to hate you. Maybe I still do, but the hatred is surely less strong than it was at the beginning. Things could have turned differently, but I think it was the best way to seal your fate. You hurt so many people during your life and you paid for your wrongdoings in the worst way possible. Isn’t this outcome quite fair?

Hope, sadness, angst, comfort, love, this story had me experiencing a full spectrum of feelings, each one more powerful than the last. This is why I appreciate dark themes; they make me feel so deeply. The art style truly did justice to that atmosphere.

“Bastard,” the gripping psychological-thriller manhwa, continues to enthrall readers in its fifth volume. With its intricate plot, thought-provoking dialogues, and exploration of complex family dynamics, this installment delivers an intense reading experience.

The Shock Factor: The fifth volume of “Bastard” doesn’t shy away from shocking revelations. As the layers of the story peel back, readers are confronted with unexpected twists and dark secrets. The suspense keeps us on the edge of our seats, eagerly turning pages to uncover the truth.

Their relationship is a central theme, and Volume 5 delves deeper into their shared history. The emotional weight of their interactions adds layers to the story, leaving readers pondering the complexities of family ties.

The Art of Storytelling: Kim’s artwork enhances the storytelling experience. From hauntingly detailed scenes to expressive character designs, each panel contributes to the overall atmosphere. The inclusion of the painting titled “Father and Son” as a pivotal moment adds an intriguing metafictional layer—an artistic commentary on the narrative itself.

What a webtoon. Incredibly well done, as is everything else from this author. This reading experience is uncomfortable and unsettling, and unquestionably well done. Definitely deserves the psychological horror categorization it is tagged with. Within these pages you will find the entire emotional range represented, a solid story, and plenty of twists and turns. This series somehow strikes a perfect balance between storytelling that is grounded and realistic, yet absurd and unbelievable.

As the blurb here isn’t in English: This story is about

This series is one of the things I read that really drove home the idea that you need to finish a book before judging it. I have not DNF’d anything since finishing this series. For most of the reading experience up until the ending this was “fine”; good enough to keep going but not life-changing. The ending however elevated the entire series to the next level. Once I finished, I had to read the whole thing again, and it was even better the second time around.

The series as a whole is 5-stars, so I’m simply rating each volume that way. I don’t see the purpose to only reading part of the story.

I never knew forgiveness was such a cruel thing.

Pristojan triler.

THAT WAS SO PERFECT.
I have not experienced such terrified emotions in a long time.
I was expecting a brutal ending, but having read Sweet Home, I already knew there would be a good ending, and I am not disappointed.
The storytelling, the villain, the protagonist... so immaculate.
I binged it in one day, so I definitely recommend thriller and psychological horror fans.
In a nutshell, I am so impressed with this author. Having read two stories of his, and they left me with a big amount of thoughts and feelings. The story is perfect when you feel joy, sorrow, grief, despair, and disturbance.
Also, here is the most terrifying panel of all times me reading horror.

I’m going to be thinking about this one for a MOMENT. Of the comics I’ve read depicting a protagonist’s internal struggle with their humanity vs. vile desires—Bastard is the gold standard. Complex characters, plot on point and terrifically written villain. Lived up to and exceeded expectations.

Update 11/13/24:
-Bastard’s more tasteful portrayal of violence against women—relative to all other comics I’ve read—is a part of the writing’s mastery. The intensity of the story wasn’t because of exploitative suffering or shock value but a result of good writing.

-An irredeemable yet surprisingly, sympathetic villain

The art style of this webtoon reminds me of the graphic of those interactive horror story games and honestly it suits the vibes of the story so much and I feel like it brings out the story in a way that no other style would've.
I had a blast reading and following Seon Jin's story but I did catch myself wishing for something more hence the rating I decided upon.
Now I'm eagerly awaiting the day some kdrama production company decides to adapt this bc it would eat so hard
