These were cute, the first and second stories were better than the third. I can't remember the last time I read contemporary fiction written in the early 90's and I really loved how some of the things - stopping at a gas station on a road trip to use a pay phone to call your mom and let her know you're 30 minutes out - are things we would never do today. Ditto for a lot of the male/female interactions. It was kind of interesting from an anthropological perspective - which I am sure is something no one has ever said about a Harlequin romance before.

I'd bought this book back in 1998, when it was published, but for some reason I did not get around to reading it until this year. Now I know why.

The first story, "An Officer and a Gentleman", was desperately in need of an editor. It lost my interest in many places because it was obvious the author was trying to make word count and throwing in more superfluous events to do so. I also wouldn't call it a holiday story, because although Christmas makes a guest appearance, it certainly isn't the theme or more than a bit player in the events.

I felt the same way about the second story - it went on way too long with so many events and characters that I lost track. When the hero and heroine finally got together I was more relieved that the story was over than happy they got their happy ending.

I admit to just skimming the third story because after two stories that were a chore to read, I figured the third would be, too. I was right. Unlikeable characters, a point of view delivered with a sledgehammer (and since I've been on both sides of the manager/worker divide I am well aware the issues are far more complex than the author presented), and an unbelieveable romance. I found myself skipping the "good bits" just to get to the end.

I have numerous books of holiday romance short stories which I have reread for years and always enjoy. This is not one of them. This book went straight into the donation pile because I will not be wasting any more time on it. I gave this book a one star rating because I don't think I can give it none.

Obviously the short stories were written years ago...The men were very chauvinistic, almost bordering on neanderthal. This wasn't a favorite...
