Where the Wyoming sky spreads bold and blue above men and women who draw their strength from the land -- and from the bonds of love they share.
A reclusive artist, Esther's testimony had once helped jail her abusive father. Terrified now that he's been released, she accepts the help of a neighboring rancher knowing nothing can come of her attraction to him because of her handicap.
She's in danger... of falling in love.
Esther Jackson needed Craig Nighthawk's protection. The father she'd helped put away for murder was now seeking her out, so against her reclusive nature, she welcomed the darkly handsome Nighthawk into her home, hoping he could keep her safe.
Craig knew all about fear and isolation. After all, he was still being tried and convicted by the people of Conard County for a crime he hadn't committed. All he wanted was to be left alone. Until he met Esther, and discovered in her loving arms a peace he would safeguard at any cost....

The heroine Esther meets her neighbour Craig, the hero, for the first time in the two years she has lived there , after one of his sheep gets into her garden. At first Esther is nervous around him, her brutal father whom crippled Esther and killed her mother has given her a lifetime of being weary of men. But she soon relaxes around him and they form a tentative friendship. Craig is intrigued by Esther, but doesn't want to become too involved with her, believing he has nothing to offer. But for some reason he can't stay away, especially when Esther's worst fear is realised - her father is out of prison and looking for her. Esther is petrified when her father makes contact, and with the law powerless to to stop him she relies on the support and protection Craig offers her. Esther begins to realise that she can't spend her whole life in fear, and her blossoming feelings for Craig help her become stronger. Even though he wants her, Craig still thinks he and Esther can never be together. So while he helps her come to terms with her fear, he also tries to push her away.
I really thought I would like this one a lot more than I did. But, I found it a little boring. The plot is really interesting but, in my opinion, far too dragged out. The lead-in to the 'big event' made it seem like this would be a suspenseful book, but I was let down. I was very intrigued by the author's use of a Native American hero, and this certainly added another layer of tension to the book, and love story. But it focused way too much on the racial/social differences between the hero and the "white man", I get it. The sexual tension between the hero and heroine is plentiful, and really helps this book along, there were so many stops and starts to their relationship that I almost wanted to cheer when they finally got together! I have to say that the bits I enjoyed most in this book were there actions, or should I say antics, of the animals!
BEAUTIFUL STORY. I HAVE ALREADY LOVED SOME OF RACHEL LEE STORIES; I LOVE THE COMPLEXITY OF HER CHARACTERS. I JUST ADORED CRAIG,HIS STORY, HIS FGHTS, HIS DREAMS AND HIS BATTLES FOR JUSTICE AND A BETTER LIFE FOR HIS CLOSEST FAMILY : HIS SISTER, BROTHER IN LAW AND HIS NEPHEWS. I JUST LOVE THE WAY SHE DESCRIBED HIS STRUGGLE AND WHAT HE HAD TO FACE: THE ORDINARY RACISM , HE HAD AND STILL HAS TO DEAL WITH AS AN AMERICAN INDIAN. I ALSO JUST LOVED ESTHER, HER COURAGE BUT ALSO HER FEARS AND STRUGGLES TO FIT AND JUST TO TRUST ANOTHER PERSON, RACHEL LEE DEPICTED SO WELL THE PRISON OF FEAR AND TERROR, THE DISABILITY OF ESTHER AND THE WAY SHE WAS ABLE JUST TO CONTINUE EVERYDAY OF COURSE; IWOULD HAVE BEEN PERSONALLY. IN THE IMPOSSIBILITY TO FORGIVE AS SHE COULD DO IT, WITH THE SOB AND WEAK FIGURE OF A FATHER. GREAT STORY; GREAT MASTER "TOILE" OF HUMAN FEELINGS,

Miss Esther is in trouble. When Craig Nighthawk's ewe hoes wandering he learns that Miss Esther needs help. Her father is back and she is afraid of him. I love Rachel Lee's work. She has created a whole community that helps each other.
Better than Cherokee Thunder, the other one I've read of hers. Esther's father killed her mother and crippled her when she was a child. Now he's out of prison and she's terrified that he wants revenge because she's the reason he was convicted. She's a hermit who lives out on a ranch, but she meets her neighbor Nighthawk when his sheep eat her garden.
Kind of generic, but pretty good. Esther's very closed off, emotionally, and is ashamed of her limp. Nighthawk's a strong character who has issues of his own from being half Indian and convicted falsely two years ago of raping a little girl. Most of their dynamic was good, although there were moments here and there where they clicked so well that it just seemed contrived. I also disliked the scene involving Jo, Esther's agent. I don't understand these scenes between women in romance novels, where one of them offers the other "tough love." I thought Jo was pushy and intrusive, giving Esther advice when she didn't understand the situation. I also thought that she wasn't nearly apologetic enough considering that it was her own fault (indirectly) that Esther's father got her address.
I had to skim the few love scenes there were. They were too much about the physical (though never really graphic) without any dialogue or real internal monologue.
Esther Jackson needed protection. The father she'd helped put away for murder was now seeking her out. So Esther turned to her nearest neighbor, rancher Craig Nighthawk, for protection.
This book is part of Lee's Conard County series. As a stand alone title, this book would have been pretty good. But It felt like I had read this story before. It's so much like a couple of the previous books in the series. This is the 10th book in the series and it feels like the author has run out of story ideas. My rating: 3 Stars.
