She'd had a bad hair day and gotten fired. He'd killed someone. In the grand scheme of things, Detective Malcolm Bridger's day was much worse than Frannie Vaughn's. But when the two strangers met that cold, lonely night, something special whispered in the air.
And then ... nothing happened. Nerves and fatigue ruined their shot at togetherness, and Frannie slipped away, sure she'd never see Bridger again. But that was before she bumped into a murder victim, before she needed Bridger's protection. Suddenly Frannie was having a whole lot of bad days -- and only Bridger's arms could make everything better.

Detective Malcolm Bridger is having a bad day. He just killed a man in a robbery gone wrong and everyone is calling him a hero but he doesn't feel like one, so he's sitting in a bar not frequented by cops and in walks Frannie.
Frannie is having a worse day, her car is behaving badly, her mother called again to ask when she is getting married and her ex-fiancee and boss fired her. So, they compare notes and Mal comes on top. Mal volunteers to walk her home but Frannie doesn't want to be alone so they rent a room in a motel, and by the time Mal freshens up he finds her asleep in bed. The next morning Frannie sneaks out thanking her stars that she didn't sleep with him, and an awake Mal, pretending to be asleep lets her, he's too old for one night-stands and he isn't looking for anything serious, he likes his job and life.
He's jolted awake by his colleague, there's been a murder in the motel and they think it maybe the woman he came with, that is quickly cleared and they go to Frannie's to ask her if she saw anything, as it turns out she describes the woman killed and a man whose backside she saw, Mal gives her his number and leaves and during the night an intruder comes in asking Frannie for something, before anything can happens the cops arrive and Mal.
Frannie had a mother who was flighty, choosing the worst men and thinking she could change them and Frannie fears she may be like that after she sleeps with Mal. They both are upfront that it won't go anywhere and it is only for one night. Mal does not want kids or a wife and Frannie does. He sleeps on her couch to protect her and to watch over her takes her home where Frannie meets his family and siblings.
Mal felt he had enough of raising his siblings after his father died and he has no plans of giving up his gun as his ex-girlfriend wanted. Frannie tells him she is falling for him and she needs someone else to guard her, then her house blows up, forcing Frannie and Mal in close quarters at his house.
I enjoyed the book especially grumpy and wary Mal. He didn't want anything serious but got angry when Frannie talked of leaving. I liked seeing him fall for her and Frannie was great as well. I enjoyed the epilogue a lot.
A good old fashioned who done it with the perp knowing just what the homicide detectives knew. One witness that needed guarding and one detective to guard her. Sparks fly and nature takes care of the rest.
This was pretty good. I liked the characters, the story line, the personalities and the ending. A little suspense, emotions, a drop of action, some twists and turns, a few sweet spots, steaminess, and a good HEA. Good for reading anytime or for passing time. Enjoy
