A Pontifex is dead. Another has risen. Civil war looms and the fate of the continent dangles from the unravelling threads of four lives.
The High Priestess. Kasia Novak fled Novostopol pursued by a shadowy cult calling itself the Order of the Black Sun. Struggling to master her newfound power, she takes shelter with a powerful Kvengard family. The Danzigers are old friends of her mentor Tessaria Foy and promise to see the women safely to Nantwich. But something is very wrong at their remote manor house. Ghostly figures stalk the grounds at night. Her readings hint at dire peril. Who is the Jack of Wolves? To practice the art of cartomancy, one must be willing to open doors. And Kasia knows the true danger lies not in the cards, but what waits on the other side.
The Knight. At the Arx in Kvengard, Alexei Bryce races against time to solve a spate of child abductions. The case leads him down ever darker paths—and towards both his brother and the woman he yearns for. An ancient text on alchemy holds the keys to the mystery, yet not even Alexei suspects the dark purpose for which the children have been taken.
The Martyr. Deep in the Morho Sarpanitum, Lezarius begins to remember who deposed him and drove him mad. The Beast of Bal Agnar—a man the rest of the world believes long dead. Only Mikhail Bryce, rendered mute by his inverted Mark, knows the truth. But the forest itself has turned against them and Lezarius’s only hope lies in Kvengard—if nihilim hunters don’t find them first.
The Fool. At the ruins of Bal Kirith, the Nightmage Malach tries to seduce Nikola Thorn into staying as his lover, but Nikola is not so easily manipulated. She carries Malach’s child—a powerful half-blood—and fears the wrath of his deranged aunt, the Pontifex Beleth. By the terms of their bargain, Malach must help Nikola reach the witches of Dur-Athaara, but letting her go demands that he renounce his selfish nature. A man with one foot in light and the other in deepest shadow, Malach’s choice will have consequences for them all.

City of Wolves (Nightmarked, #2) ♦ Kat Ross | Review
After I was already convinced by the first volume of the Nightmarked series, Kat Ross has upped the ante with City of Wolves.
The series of Nightmarked is flawlessly continued in City of Wolves. The story’s suspense keeps increasing by every single chapter. Also, the pace won’t slow down nor will the thrill lessen even when you reach peak scenes. There has already been a lot of activity in the first volume, and I couldn’t imagine that there was still that much more to come.
City of Wolves ♦ Kat Ross
Opinion
City of Wolves, the second book in Kat Ross‚ Nightmarked series, is an exhilarating adventure. As the three main characters are dispersed over the fictional realm of the Via Sancta, there is plenty of action right away. The inexplicable disappearances of multiple youngsters from the town of Kvengard are being looked into by the story’s hero, Alexei, who is both a soldier and a priest.
After surviving an attack by the pseudo religious group of the Black Sun, Kasia, the wicked cartomancer, is sailing toward Nantwich on a ship. While the night mage, Malach, is in Bal Kirith falling more and more for Nikola, an unmarked charwoman.
And as a new evil was on the rise and threatened the whole humanity, the vanished children, Alexei was looking for, seemed to hold the key to everyone’s redemption. All of these contradictory threads were skillfully woven together into an intriguing story. Kat Ross really did an amazing job with the sequel.
The characters were still developing throughout the book, and occasionally they even caught me off guard! Also, the incredible variety of personalities and trait was refreshing and entertaining. The elicit waves of emotion they went through made me both laugh and sometimes shed a tear. It was also tremendously energizing to see the growth of the plot into areas and characters.
Conclusion
★★★★★
City of Wolves does contain a variety of points of view, which aids in expanding the overall narrative as the individuals strive to figure out exactly what role they play as all these events develop. Due to the numerous turns and surprises, I could hardly stay away from this book.

Loved it! Great sequel! Kasia and Alexia have more adventures with the Black Sun, fighting to stay safe and find the truth. Loved being back with the same characters, such a lush world! Really get drawn into the story, and the use of the tarot cards is cool! Looking forward to the third!

Book two and the pace is really starting to pick up. Both the storyline and the characters are developing and growing and it keeps getting more captivating and enthralling as we go on. Secrets are revealed, magical abilities are coming out and the world building continues to be fantastic. The twists and turns and surprises will keep you spinning and leave you on the edge of your seat and I cannot wait to read book three!
My mind is still swirling with all of the information that has been unveiled. Malach and Nikola have such an interesting dynamic and I can’t wait to see it play out more. Kasias heritage has me shook. I suspected the sibling aspect but her father is an entire blindside. The children add such a creepy overtone and I love it. I was surprised that they refer to them as fae after the transformation through alchemy. Which I have to say I wasn’t expecting alchemy to play a part in this. But it somehow fits. I was taken aback by Alexeis reaction to Kasias secrets as it didn’t really fit his character but we will just call it temporary insanity. Spassov and Natalia took it like the champs they are. The witches I had suspected would be a part of it all, I’m just hazy on exactly how they expect to at this point. I mean taking Malach out of the equation for a bit, yes but what else? Surely they are capable of more. At this point I’m not entirely sure just who to root for or what the best outcome could be.

Now that secrets are have been uncovered our characters are all on the run. Will their paths cross? Where will the ley guide them? Let’s find out!
Read if you like: Urban fantasy, dark fantasy, paranormal, dystopian, interesting magical systems, false utopia, government plots, mystery, multiple POV, searching for truth, slow burn, world-building, and complex characters.
Kasia’s readings keep showing her the same cards and the fate… and it looks like their problems have only just begun. Can she figure out the key players and the roles they need to fill to save the fate of their world? Alexi is trying his best to leave Kvengard to hunt for his brother. But he’s been put on a case that he can’t leave without solving. He’s found some clues that could spell danger for himself and the fate of the Church. Malach and Nikola have made it to safety, even though safety is relevant in Bal Kirith and the surrounding jungles. Their child might change the fate of the world, but can they flee the crumbling city without suspicion? Their biggest obstacle might be acknowledging their ever-evolving feelings and convictions for each other and the fight for the ley. And where are our escaped invertidos heading with such great determination?
If the first book was great then this book was amazing! The many plots and pacing of each were so good and the way they would overlap and intertwine was so fun to experience. I love a book with compelling characters on both sides of a conflict. Everything felt very solid and grounded, any of the rushed feelings I got from City of Storms were resolved. I could gush. I love all the settings. We go from rustic villages to desolate artic landscapes; from lush jungles to bustling city streets alive with all the modern conveniences. We have new mysteries to solve on all sides. Most exciting of all is everyone’s journey in understanding that the greatest truth of the ley and human nature have been hidden… and it’s up to them to uncover. I also love the romance between Kasia and Alexi. Their spicy slow burn connection is building into something quite formidable. I cannot wait to begin reading City of Keys!
Thank you to BookSirens and Kat Ross for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
While I must agree that the first dark urban fantasy volume of this series, City of Storms, did throw a lot of characters and new world building scenarios at the reader that didn’t really get explained until past half of the book, you won’t have that problem with City of Wolves.
The characters and their interactions with each other become clearer and the various names and titles of each character and their place in this new world created by Kat begin to make a lot more sense. (Plus, there is a glossary at the end of the book if you need to look up who or what something is.)
I thought the first book moved along rather well, but City of Wolves really begins to explode with political plots and marching armies, while individual secrets and various magical abilities are revealed. There are plenty of explosive encounters, both physical and verbal, between the various characters. I have found that I like most all of the characters, and can’t really decide which side of the conflict to root for!
The City of Wolves does have multiple POV which helps in broadening the overall story as the characters try to determine just what part they play as events unfold. There are many twists and turns and surprises that will keep you turning the pages long after you should have turned out the light.

This ‘What consumes your mind, controls your life’ (Anonymous) has never been truer than in this book. Who ISN’T after somebody in the City of Wolves? Who ISN’T spying on the other guys? Who ISN’T a spy… Several characters act as if they are the ones making decisions yet are completely oblivious that they, in fact, are the puppets rather than the Puppet Master.
Great world-building, lots of character interaction and development, plenty of “palace” intrigue, some romantic overtones (awesome that they don’t overpower the story), betrayals galore, and cute dogs. Let’s not forget the cute dogs.
TRIGGER WARNING: There is a sub-plot involving children, so tread carefully.
I enjoyed this dark urban fantasy even more than ‘City of Storms’ and I have a feeling that ‘City of Keys’ will be awesome as well.
I did enjoy reading the first and second book of this series. I just found that it didn't have the depth of world building that comes across in other series popular within this genre. Felt as though it would be better suited for a teenage audience. As a result, I decided not to continue reading the series.
Who'd have thought such a slow burn of a plot could be such a page-turner? Ross has done it again, taking a carefully crafted urban fantasy world that's both familiar and new at the same time and propelling us through it alongside her cast of spiky characters as they unravel the strangest of tales. It's a long book, but not a single one of those pages feels wasted. If you're looking for epic romances or constant action you won't find that here, but the magic and intrigues more than make up for it.
Again we follow Kasia, Alexei, Malach, Nikola and... A few other spoilerish POVs who are well worth the time to get to know. Each have their own mysteries to ponder and dire situations to escape, but while they seem distant from each other, fate it would seem has other plans. Linked by the ley and the tarot cards Kasia reads, each time we think we've seen the bigger picture more comes into view. It's a varied and complex series of events involving the hunt for missing children, mad mages out in the jungle, dark heresies conducted right under the Curia's eye, and so much more lore besides.
So. Much. Lore. And you get the feeling this isn't even the half of it.
he only negatives I could nitpick were that I could struggle to keep up with all the narrative threads given just how many there are fragmented across different places, and at one point (much like in book one) a revelation is given in a rather easy sort of way. Again, much like book one, character relationships didn't feel developed exactly ( I was very confused by sudden jumps in how characters acted; I wish there had been something more about the idea of fate that runs through the book to explain why) though there is a potential side character one brewing rather subtly that's a nice touch. Characters are still quite difficult to get a handle on or relate to, but they each manage to lead their part of the plot in a way that's captivating.
Honestly though, this is one creative and unpredictable series of events set in a world where it's not always easy to pin-point real-life analogues to one geographic place or culture (for good reason, given the world's history). I couldn't stop turning those pages, and the only frustration I had about the length was that I couldn't read it fast enough for my own curiosity!
The ending promises so much more, and I can't wait to get stuck in to book 3.

This book was another fantastic installment of one of the best fantasy series I've ever read.
Book 2 of the Nightmarked series continues the story of a clergy-run continent that was once the world we knew a millenia ago, before the 2nd dark age. Don't think "clergy" in the traditional sense because God is not one bit involved here. The people of this time serve the Ley, not God. Ley is the psychoactive power at the core of the planet that's neither good nor evil, and it interacts with the mind. Fascinating. Ley is at the center of everything. We learned this in the first book, and the second book takes it further.
This was a long book told through a wide variety of viewpoints and takes place in a variety of fascinating locals, including the Void, where Ley is not accessible to those able uses it. In essence, the Void makes the mages of this world impotent and easier to control, but by the end of the story the Ley runs free again, creating new dangers to the enemies of the mages (aka nihilim). Thirty years of hard-won peace comes to an end and a third dark age is on the horizon.
The characters are many, all complex with their own story. Secondary plots abound in this volume, and all are necessary parts of the whole. Ross is a genius at character development and her plotting is exquisitely executed.
My only criticism is that each of the main characters have more than one name, and all of them are used, sometimes in the same paragraph. Until you get the hang of who's who, it's a challenge to keep them all straight. For example we have Fra Bryce (a priest, who is also a knight) who also goes by Alexei and by Alyosha. Kasia is also Kiska and Nashka. Etc. You can see the Russian influence by the names, but there's also latin influence as well.
If you enjoy complicated fantasy series similar to Wheel of Time and Game of Thrones, you'll love the Nightmarked series. It's my personal favorite and I started reading book three, City of Keys, immediately after finishing City of Wolves. So far, it's just as amazing as the first two.

“She has brought something into the world that will bring the nations of men to their knees.”
The second installment of Kat Ross’s Nightmarked series does not disappoint. Far from falling victim to “second book slump”, “City of Wolves” builds on the dynamic foundation Ross laid down in “City of Storms” and gives readers something truly sublime. Ross’s world-building skills are again on full display, with masterfully described settings and mythologies packed in nicely. The development of existing characters is seamless and realistic, and new characters are introduced fully fleshed-out. The follow-up to “City of Storms” finds our protagonists having fled Novostopol, but even closer to danger. Alexei, being assigned as an aide to Bishop Morvana Ziegler, is tasked with solving a string of mysterious disappearances in Kvengard. Kasia and her companions have found shelter with old allies and made plans to travel on to Nantwich. But a series of strange occurrences and an increasingly disturbing investigation soon sets them all on a collision course with a deadly adversary. Across the continent, Malach and Nikola are embroiled in struggles of their own. They’ve sought refuge in Bal Kirith, but sanctuary in the Void is short-lived. Age-old conflicts soon come knocking, threatening to put their plans, and their lives, in jeopardy. A well-crafted and engrossing read, Ross’s “City of Wolves” is a definite page-turner. Its combination of action, horror, and romance elements make it a solid choice for fans of multiple fantasy sub-genres.

I'm not sure I've ever been ready to review a book like I have this one! Kat Ross has delivered utter greatness with the Nightmarked series.
The City of Wolves continues the series seamlessly. The intensity of the story continues to build. Even after you reach climactic points the pace doesn't slow nor does the excitement dwindle. So much has happens yet there's still so much to come!
Everything about this story is expanding and reaching new heights of power. The revealing of such pivotal and vital pieces of this story starts to occur. The depth of meaning and theory that is bound in this story is fascinating. I was pleasantly surprised and found it to even be prolific.
I was anxious to read every chapter… Which isn't always the case when novels are laid out as this series, by character(s). Kasia & Natalya, Malach & Nikola, Alexei (& even Alice) … I was eager to catch up on everyone of them!!!
These characters are still evolving and even surprise you from time to time! The range of personalities and characteristics among them is phenomenal. They create waves of emotion, causing me to laugh and even becoming tearful. The expansion of new characters and new locations is also very refreshing.
I will waste no time diving into book three! I can't wait to find out the path that Kasia is destined to have to choose or where the tides take Malach and everything else for all those in between!

The narrative picks up seamlessly from where each character embarked on their individual paths, their destinies seemingly temporary. This tale delves into the lives of several characters, some of whom were once united but now find themselves separated, only to reunite through unexpected twists and turns. However, their journey is fraught with challenges and obstacles.
As unforeseen plot developments emerge, the storyline becomes increasingly unpredictable, leading to disastrous consequences. Kasia undergoes a profound revelation about her true identity, shattering her world. Simultaneously, Alexei uncovers a lead that exposes a sinister cult's operations, while the Nightmage Malach faces tests in his relationship with Nikola.
Throughout the narrative, a recurring theme emerges: the notion that not all that appears evil is entirely malevolent, just as there is darkness within the light. The story further expands its world-building by introducing witches, whose roles and potential connection with the ley, a mystical force, come into question. Will the darkness corrupt the ley, or will the witches play a pivotal role in its preservation?
The narrative continues to diversify as it explores these themes, providing an intriguing blend of fantasy and suspense while posing thought-provoking questions about the nature of good and evil in a richly imagined world.
Buckle up reader! The second installment of Kat Ross’ Nightmarked series, City of Wolves, is a wild ride. Plenty of action from the outset as our three main characters find themselves spread throughout the fictional world of the Via Sancta. Our lawyer-soldier-priest, Alexei, is in Kvengard, the eponymous City of Wolves, investigating the mysterious disappearances of several of the town’s children. Kasia, our sociopathic cartomancer, is on a ship headed to Nantwich after escaping an attack by the cultish order of the Black Sun. Malach, our nightmage, is in Bal Kirith falling ever more in love with the lowly unmarked charwoman, Nikola. All of these disparate threads are harmoniously woven into an exciting plot as we find out that a new evil threatens the entire world - but the disappeared children hold the key to everyone’s salvation. I would not recommend reading this as a stand alone - you would need to read the City of Wolves first to understand the events that are transpiring in this one. The world building is incredibly rich and complex, but the glossary at the end of the book is very helpful in clarifying certain terms. I am really looking forward to the next book in the series, City of Keys. Bravo, Ms. Ross! I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for my voluntary review.

Kat Ross is an expert at the game!
Get ready readers, to once again be enthralled in the dynamics of the world of the Via Sancta.
Where we catch up with our characters we have grown to love.
Alexi: The Infamous soldier turned priest (all for the love and sake of his
brother) is away in Kvengard investigating the "UNTHINKABLE"
Kasia: Alexi's love interest and Cartomancer, is whisked away to Nantwhich.
Malach: Evil/Yet, is he? Mage who is enthralled with an unmarked woman named Nikola. But the question is, what is up with her? What exactly is her real story?
Between Kasia and Alexi dealing with the Black suns and trying to save their own lives.
Just trying to find out what exactly is going to happen to Malach with Nikola. Will she change him? Is she good or evil? So, so many questions surrounding those two it is mind boggling.
Ross has done a splendid job once again with her powerful word building and the use of the Latin language, makes this one hell of an enjoyable read.
Once I fully devoted my time between classes, I was hooked.
Ross has put her mark up there with the "BEST" in Fantasy, and fully deserving of her place.
I continue to love this world and its characters. This book is a great continuation of the first in building the world and moving everyone's storylines along.
The three storylines in play stay harmonious, none of them are overshadowing the others in a discordant or unnatural way, but at the same time they all feel necessary. Some books with multiple POV plotlines start to feel like a forced way to extend page count, but not this one.
I'm surprised at the smooth change of heart this book has managed to wring out of me for our anti-hero mage, now trapped and powerless on a faraway island when all he wants is to find his woman and child.
At the same time, our star-crossed lovers come into each others spheres, but quickly have to leave again. I love that no one is forced to compromise on their own identity and motivations just because they want to get in one another's pants. It makes me root for them even more.
And the development of the long lost super powered mage? Love it. it provided an excellent plot device instead of deux ex machina to shake up things and keep the story moving.

It has been over a year since I read book 1 of the NightMarked series (Jan 2024) and I found I needed a fast reread (okay, skim) in order to come back to the City of Wolves. And it was so worth it.
The book has multiple POVs from Major and Minor Arcana and characters but the voices are written so distinctly, it is easy to keep track of who is who. The world-building that occasionally bogged down book 1 is solid infrastructure here and the cities, magic, and cultures are visually vivid and make sense. The slow burn romance between Kasia (unmarked cartographer) and Alexei (soldier priest) doesnt overwhelm the plot. The bargain between Malach and Nicola provides a thoughtful counterpoint of what are we willing to do for freedom. Loyalty is both punished and rewarded and there are enough plot twists (no spoilers here) to keep the pages turning.
This isn’t a shallow read. I found myself thinking hard about ethnic cleansing as a result of dogma, the high cost of being marginalized (the Unmarked), and the lengths those in power will go to remain in power.
A solid satisfying five star read and one I will continue to think about.
City of Wolves is a fantastic sequel to City of Storms.
Without missing a beat this book starts off right as the first book ends, keeping your attention in its grasp.
I love that we get to see familiar characters such as Alexia and Kasia. Following them along on their adventures with the Black Sun is great and all, but the world building that Kat Moss does is phenomenal. Ross really finds a way for you to feel as if you are there with them, getting caught up in not just the action of the story but creating a bond with the characters. Finding yourself not only rooting for the characters but getting sucked in and feeling all your emotions being poured into the story with them. Great read, looking forward to the 3rd installment.
This was an advanced reader copy for booksirens and the Author, my review is my honest thoughts.
This is the second installment of the “Nightmarked” series. It is also very well written and tops the first installment because I was a bit better adjusted to the character names and slavic setting. It is built on this cultish church which split into sections and fought within itself for eons and using the human trait of fearing and oppressing those who are different.
Now I understand the whole world and factions and groups much better and some connections are much clearer. The world building is still dizzying at times, but the character development is very interesting and they are well developed. Not sure who my favorite character is. I love Kasia, Nikola, and even Mallach is growing on me. I am very much looking forward to the next installment.

City of wolves was a good follow-up to the first volume of the series. The writing was just as good and there was a good pace to it. It is very often that I find myself reading a fantastic first book and the rest of a series is a bit of a let down. But here, it was nothing of the sort. As we follow the main characters out of Novo, we learn more about them. The characters were already quite complex but this volume revealed even more depth, making them more endearing. The story gets more complicated as new actors take stage and new magics were introduced.
It was a really great second volume to a great series.

This book was just as good as the first. It absolutely followed through as a sequel, and I loved every minute of it.
We cycle through all of the povs so seamlessly that I never feel like there is a lull in the story. The pace is so steady, and the alternating character focuses kept me so interested that it was impossible to put this one down.
I'm so invested in all of the different characters, some for different reasons than others. I love and hate characters. I worry for others, I'm scared of others. I can't help but hope for so many of them (and then get my hopes dashed because this is not a happily ever after kind of book). All of the emotions, all of the time.
I'm so completely, 100% invested in this story, and I can't get enough.

City of Wolves is even better than City of Storms! Picking up right where the last book finished, it takes off at a quick pace and never lets up until the end. It reminds me very much of Game of Thrones, but manages to be more eloquently written with, what I hope, is a clear understanding of where the final plot is headed. This book continues using multiple POVs and there are so many characters to root for, including some I've come to unexpectedly, and begrudgingly, care about. I can only imagine the next book will be excruciating and emotionally charged and I'm looking forward to it!
The second in Kat Ross's Nightmarked series, City of Wolves blends magic and mystery with a dystopian world... one where magic is tantalising in its potential for good, but so often twisted and corrupted in politics and religion.
I thought I knew where Ross was taking me in this journey, but as always, despite satisfying development both in the characters and worldbuilding, suddenly I am thrown back into mystery and wondering - where is she taking me next?!
With hints of Philip Pullman's Dark Materials and Magisterium, alongside tastes of steampunk and gothic darkness, there's something for all tastes in Nightmarked.
In this second volume You absolutely cannot choose your favorite character.
The story continues and becomes more and more complex! Perfect for a read for suspense seekers and a way to travel with the mind, the Author provides enough character descriptions to let your imagination run off into the dark with you! The story is told from the point of view of several characters: the convergence of the plots is not regular but it is not a defect but rather it brings you the absolute need to read the 3rd book of this series …. I have to read it by force. You must read this series. Kat Ross is unique and fantastic
Another gripping instalment by Kat Ross in her Nightmarked series that has left me craving the next. This author has woven her story well, with characters ebbing and flowing smoothly through the book, pulling you into the tale. The storyline is unique (which in this day and age is impressive in itself) with hints of what may or may not come in future books. This leaves the reader hoping the Author is a fast writer and that the next book is ready to consume.

The story continues and grows in complexity! Perfect for a Halloween read - suspenseful and inventive - providing just enough description of the monsters at work to let your imagination run away into the dark with you! Told from the point of view of multiple characters - the converging of story lines is left at a ragged end resulting in a need to obtain the 3rd book in this series that cannot be ignored!

I received this as an ARC and the following is my opinion…
I liked this book I just didnt enjoy it as much as the first book in the series. I believe it may have been because now that they have all separated into their own parts of the story it kind of took the original banter between the characters away.
I did enjoy that you learnt more about the characters though. I still enjoy the way the magic is portrayed and the different ways that magic is shown and how that makes you part of the word.
Great continuation from the first book. Lots of traveling and nobody can be trusted. The characters continue to be well developed and I’m constantly trying to decide who’s safe to be trusted, who’s out for blood, and whose loyalty is up in the air. I usually figure things out pretty quickly, but I e had a few surprises which keeps it fun and interesting. These books have atmosphere and are a total vibe. I actually wish I had started reading them in Autumn instead of Spring/Summer. I feel like Autumn/Winter would be perfect for these books.
**I received a free ARC from Book Sirens in return for voluntarily leaving this honest review.** What an amazing follow-up to the beginning of the series. We have moved cities to Kvengard, city of wolves where Alexei is investigating missing children and Kasia, Natalya, Tessaria and Patryk end up following to avoid problems in Novo. It hits the ground running and is full of twists, turns and excitement!
