After a disastrous encounter with an alien species, Captain Roc Masters finds himself exiled on a rundown station in the asteroid belt, commanding an ancient starship with a near-mutinous crew.
Just as he finally resigns himself to his fate, the aliens return to attack Earth.
With the inner worlds crumbling and most of the Earth and Martian navies sidelined or destroyed, it's up to Roc and his lone starship to hold the line.
He knows he must gather together what little humanity there is beyond the asteroid belt and make a stand against the aliens.
But first, he'll have to survive the armada sent to finish him off.
Starship Honor is the first book in the Honor in Exile series, a sci-fi adventure that features endless action, alien foes, and the worst—and best—of humanity.
The battles are decisive and violent, with most of the deaths off screen. Some examples of gallantry, enough to create hope for the future. Decent character development and good supporting cast are carried by a well crafted storyline.
Great syfy military space opera with first contact
After a too often used protagonist is disgraced and sent into exile until the new alien race shows their true colors and turned on human, taking control of human space. Capt Masters rallies his Marines to show the Mariners never leave anyone behind.
Another outstanding story that’s fast paced to keep you intrigued. Capt Roc is now exiled after a battle with the Aliens. How will this all end. Binge worthy.
Fairly standard beginning which rapidly changed with lies and betrayal. Sent into the outer system by his government and rejected by friends and family, Roc and his best friend and xo take over the Honor a retired warship put out to quell quarrels among miners and drunks. They manage to pull the crew together when war breaks out. Some characters stand out like the pilot and engineer, while most are rather bland. The most intriguing things are the new ship skin and the alien prisoner. Will read the next in series to see what else the alien may supply and her strange friendship. Already can guess at the secret the aliens hide and how they mean to remedy it.
Excellent read! While the story line is common (disgraced military starship captain with a drunken, dishonorable crew ends up fighting aliens), everything about how that story line is handled feels fresh and new. I loved it!
Passable. Actually the majority is enjoyable, if simplistically written. The ending sequel bait is a joy, and it was a bargain as a trilogy. However, there's an odd time skip in the first third I'm not a fan of. The opening third presents the crew as exiled ne'er do wells with various addiction issues. Captain Masters has been wrongfully punished, and the treachery of the Nuzac proves him correct. I was looking forward to seeing the crew learn to pull together, overcome their issues, develop their skills. I stead, war is declared and in the next chapter everyone is an ace guerilla fighter. It's enjoyable, but not what I was expecting, and I felt cheated of the character interplay and development as it felt everyone had jumped forward 6 months, including in their relationships and how they relate to one another.

Captain Masters was sent to the asteroid belt, a scapegoat within the wheels of burocracy. The Nazuc return and demand surrender of Earth and Mars. Out in the belt Masters and his crew go into action, making sure they are ready for the fight. But first they need to regroup, once through the asteroid belt they should be safe. The Nazuc have a damaged ship out there and they rescue the remaining crew. Now they need to get to Saturn, but can they trust the Nazuc engineer? A must read for all lovers of space military.
Great story opening salvo will get your blood pumping.
First Contact with an Alien Starship, initial scans indicate some type of Crystal covers the hull type unknown. The Admiral in charge of a task force from the planet of Mars is in charge of making contact Flying behind is Captain Roc Masters originally headed out on the first shake down cruise of a brand New Destroyer. His orders under no circumstances will be fire on the alien! The Mars task force is fired on and totally destroyed, Captain Masters returns fire taking damage to his new command destroys the alien. What is next will keep you entertained for hours.
The book starts off slightly abbreviated as it lays the familiar trope, that is the one where a military officer does something right that isn't politically expedient to the "brass" and gets cashiered for it. Then they are put into a punishment situation where they're forced to take a crew of misfits and Outright reprobates and turn them into a fighting crew.
So far it's been entertaining so I'll read the next book and see if it continues.
Not bad 3.5 stars. The story is a cliche, disgraced captain, obsolete ship and a crew of rejects to fight off a superior alien invader, and it has been done a lot better. However the story is pacey and entertaining despite that. Lots of combat with a few nice touches and some engaging characters. I will read the rest to see how it develops.
I like science fiction and space opera. So, I started a number of books and then when they formulaic far too simplistic I stop and get rid of them. I was pleasantly surprised when James +King Produced a first contact, lone ship to the rescue story that is put together well and has not been easy to forecast what’s coming next. I’m getting the next volume.
The book is one of the shortest I've read in a while. I have read short stories that were longer. The story line is interesting, but doesn't really make an ending. It reminds me of old time radio shows that say, " Tune in next week to see what happens to the Lone Ranger and Tonto!
What a piece of cr... Aliens invade and put a minefield all over the solar system between Jupiter and Saturn! Ok, if they have so much raw materials and production capacity in space, what do they need planets for? They could build a Dyson sphere and have the equivalent of thousands of solar systems. But probably that's too deep for writers like Mr. James.
DNF. Can't stand stories with holes deep enough to come out to China in them.

Last night just before bed, I started this book. Then before I knew it I was finishing it. The time and pages just flew by. This story will grip you, while taking you for a ride. The characters are lovable and a story that is gripping, and well told. Keeps you turning the pages. Great Reading Everyone!
Good plot that is exciting to follow, but there are lot of typos.
I liked the characters, especially "bullfrog": he adds humor to the story. Some of the things going on were pretty unbelievable, but this is science FICTION. I see from the preview of the next book that more exciting things are coming up. Bring it on!!!
Interesting post invasion story with the intro book identifying the antagonists and the heroes. A variety of likable characters with human frailties are introduced and the hostilities begin with a lopsided space war favoring the invaders. Hints of future activities draw you into the series.
I thought this was an enjoying book with interesting action and characters but the actions of the government and military leadership make no sense. After losing thousands of lives they just bend over for a alien species they know to be violent? They give them all command and control? That makes no sense.
No matter the circumstances, some how one’s ideal of honour shall prevail. Despite the horrors of spacial war, in this book, honour still exists even among aliens as shown by the alien engineer to the ship’s captain. Fantastic action and weird science In spades in this novel. Looking forward to book 2.
I can like the premise of this book and the plot isn’t bad. But if you are going to write sci-fi at least get the science right. Explosions don’t propagate in a vacuum. Ships don’t behave like they are in air when turning. With no gravity or atmospheric friction they don’t slow down when you stop adding propulsion. So 3 out of 6 stars
The evil (unable to keep their word) aliens don’t see humans as equals. Humans are behind them technically and in space faring. Humans believe in honor and the sanctity of human life. This is a good beginning to a series.
A common theme to the book but interesting turns with respect to the alien culture though always brutal rather than strategic. Looking forward to second volume.
This is a short book, a very quick read but overall enjoyable, it doesn't take itself too seriously and you read it like a sci-fi show really. Things move really fast here and the story develops well.
Action packed adventure that never stops. This is the beginning of a great series full of sci-fi intrigue. I like characters and seeing them mature. I really like this book and I highly recommend it.
I am eager to participate in the unwinding take of this book. Awaiting publication of book 2 & 3. Thus far, this story draws you in immediately and you won’t out it down until you’ve reached the end!
Similar format to many books, the good guy does right and is punished for it. Sent to and old ship it turns out he's one of the few left to save Earth,. Looking forward to the next book.
I enjoyed this book as it took quite a few twists and turns, keeping me on my toes. Good pace; the story moved right along. I am definitely looking forward to Book Two.
