"Most messages we hear about porn leave us feeling ashamed, helpless, and hopeless. Porn Free invites you to be curious about your story and shows you how to become a person who does not need porn." -Jay Stringer, Psychotherapist & Author of How Sexual Brokenness Reveals Our Way To Healing "I've been called 'disarming' when speaking about pornography and recovery. Well, Matt is the guy who 'disarms' me. He's been one of my go-to guys for his practical, down-to-earth, actionable advice." -Michael Leahy, Author of Porn Conquering America's #1 Addiction and founder of BraveHearts "Every man needs help and every man has some help to give. Matt needed a lot of help to get porn free - but the good news for you is he has a lot of help to give." -Nate Larkin, Author of Samson and the Pirate Monks and founder of The Samson Society You'll never quit porn if you believe it's the problem. Porn is the solution. This may sound crazy. You may be sure porn is your problem. I thought the same thing and spent years trying to fix it. It didn't work. So what's the problem? Now that's a question worth asking. If you can't stop using porn there is a reason. I want to help you learn why. Inside, you'll Your life doesn't have to be defined by your porn addiction. - Matt Dobschuetz
Thoroughly enjoyed this read. Matt wrote simply yet at times powerfully. I found inspiration for recovery and would highly recommend this book for someone seeking inspiration, tools and an understanding into how recovery is possible.
As he does on his podcast Matt always goes deeper than Porn. He deals with the core issues involved that lead people to unhealthy self-care. I recommend this book, even if porn isn't your vice or a current struggle for you as it will help to reevaluate other patterns and behaviors in your life.
This is an excellent book. I don't know if you are in recovery or if you are resisting taking steps. Or maybe a friend recommended this book to you. Please. Read it. I've been in recovery for over ten years and there isn't another book like this. Matt's writing is honest, humorous, humble, and true. Unlike so many books that prescribe more plans and formulas for stopping the addiction, for stopping the acting out, Matt's book is an action plan. I've been on this recovery journey for awhile, and I've read many books and attended various groups, but Matt offers something entirely new here. It's refreshing. Please get this book and read it. Take action.
This is a very very good book. Short and to the point, Matt writes with characteristic sensitivity about a topic that can feel very heavy. But he doesn't pull any punches either, for those wanting to "find freedom" (for themselves, or supporting others) there is work to do. The hardest work of all being the internal examination of what are the underlying drivers to porn and related behaviours?
Ultimately it comes down not to behaviour modification of call the things you don't do, it's about what you're moving towards.
I'd recommend this to those in the struggle themselves and anyone trying to support someone else.
It’s simply wonderful and uplifting. The reading of every chapter fills you with hope and good resources to defeat this beast of porn. Matt is like a big brother full of love and Grace for all who are committed to change their lives. The best approach I know about recovery from the harm of porn
An everyman’s guide to the porn recovery process (albeit from a Christian perspective).
Dobschuetz’s strength is in his openness and vulnerability about his personal struggles, which have power and build connection even through the medium of a book. There is great courage here.
He has some good ways of expressing some important angles of the recovery process and the feelings porn serves to numb. I also liked his emphasis on moving from porn avoidance to a positive view of oneself and mission (freedom for rather than freedom from).
My only critique would be the lack of clarity about the process of making a plan. His chapter here was rather vague. It gives the feel that the plan itself is not important as long as we’re doing something, which I’m not sure I agree with.
As it is, this book is very helpful as a motivator but less as a path out of the addiction.
Thank you for being so real and putting a new perspective into quitting porn. The selfish desires of wanting a ski-ride and buffet meal instead of settling for chicken nuggets. Also the desires of adventure, mystery that I can go somewhere else with (such as work to become an expert) instead of porn.
