"PICK ME Lil Peter PICK ME" is a great story to inspire kids to be good leaders by helping others learn. The story begins with Lil Peter's teacher picking him to be the team captain for the upcoming gym class dodge ball games. Later, she pulls him aside to ask him to pick the students who always get picked last. Lil Peter has reservations about doing this because he wants to win the game and he thinks that the students who always get picked last aren't good players but the teacher encourages him to pick them so they feel the joy of being picked first. Later, the story goes on to show how Lil Peter's leadership and teaching his classmates how to play the game helps them all in the long run.
I would recommend this book for teachers and parents to read to kids around ages 6-8 to inspire kids to be good leaders and not always pick the "winners" because the "losers" can be winners too! They just need encouragement, practice, and a good leader!

I've been a fan of the Lil Peter series since its very first book and this is another winner! I just love the messages and lessons the stories teach, yet not in a preachy way. This one shows how Lil Peter learns about what it means to be a leader, after his teacher asks him to pick his team a little differently than before. Although I've not experienced this kind of thing before, as my teachers never let us choose our own teams — I guess to avoid this whole problem of being picked last — I can imagine what it'd feel like to be one of the last ones. It's a reminder for all of us, adults, teachers, managers etc. to give the 'less capapable' or 'average' ones a chance to perform and build them up too. If they're never given a chance, they'll never improve or develop their potential. It also reminds the 'better' ones to not be so arrogant and proud all the time. We all need leaders like Lil Peter. Not just in dodgeball, or in school, but in the workplace too. I highly recommend this book!

This is a great and relatable story that is packed full of valuable life lessons! I'm sure most people, if not everyone, can put themselves in the shoes of one of the children characters. Whether you are/were used to be a team leader, picked first, or picked last, there are always things to learn from any situation.

One of my favorite takeaways from this book is how Lil Peter learned to lead by example, i.e. teach through showing, and not simply telling, someone what to do. The story also values the importance of teamwork, and how working hard in general can pay off and help you achieve things you never thought possible.

The way the authors weave so many incredible lessons into such a short story is very impressive! Everything that Lil Peter learns is very important and is presented in a way that is easy to understand and relate to. I recommend this story for everyone to read!

This is an absolutely fantastic book. (Says the girl picked in the middle of the dodgeball games) I remember exactly what it felt like to hope not to be chosen last. The lesson of being a leader is priceless for kids of all ages and a few bosses I’ve had. The illustrations do a great job of getting the message across and appear more meaningful than the cover hints at.

Great book about what matters in life

This book really hit home for me as I was always the last one picked for any sports as I was always the smallest and most awkward kid in class. But, in Dodge Ball, I excelled and was always the last one standing. I really enjoyed this book and wish the kids growing up with me were more like Lil Peter. There wasn’t anyone there to help me. Great book and I would recommend it to anyone, especially those who have kids in school.

“As you grow up, Lil Peter, think about what kind of leader you want to be.”

An inspiring story, which teaches children an important lesson about leadership and the value of having the right person to guide you. While reading the book to my daughter, I traveled back in time and remembered the teachers who made a difference in my life. I think this story, in fact all the stories in the series, could be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

There is always a big difference between being a leader and someone who leads, and we have the responsibility, as parents, to teach our kids about it. I loved that the story was set during physical education, as it somehow reinforced the idea that we can use our leadership skills in any kind of setting.

Lil Peter, the main character, is chosen the team captain for dodgeball, with the teacher asking him to pick his team. However, this will not be a usual request, as you will see for yourself. I always felt that teachers shape the lives of our kids, being able to impart lessons that will stick with them for the rest of their lives. This story here delivers just that point, with the teacher guiding Lil Peter in the right direction.

I applaud the author for creating a story that focuses on helping children develop leadership skills, and I believe it would make a great addition to both home libraries and classroom settings. The story is highlighted by the beautiful illustrations, which my daughter adored. On my level, I appreciated the message it sends about leadership and I think school-age children will easily relate to the story.

This was a delightful read, one that I enjoyed just as much as my daughter did. With a strong, yet sensitive teacher, Lil Peter learned an important lesson about making the right choices. The author did a great job in picturing the emotions kids nowadays experience, making her story even more relatable. Kids will have a lot to learn from this book, and I encourage your little bookworms to seek out the other books in the series as well.

First, I want to thank Peter Valdez, Tasche Laine, Mei Mei Leonard and Skye Blue Press for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

YES!! I am a huge fan of Peter Valdez, Tasche Laine and Mei Mei Leonard’s Lil Peter series!! I was so excited to read Pick Me Lil Peter Pick Me! All of their books tell a great story with an incredible message! Mei Mei does a beautiful job on the illustrations that make this story come alive. The three of them make a fantastic team!

Both Peter and Tasche would like to dedicate this book to all the Teachers out there that made us think outside of the box and to see things in unconventional ways.

Pick Me Lil Peter Pick Me put such a smile on my face with this adorable story and the powerful meaning behind it. I could totally relate to the children in the book as I was always the one pick last!

Mei Mei outdid herself on the graphics in this one! She is incredibly talented as her illustrations were detailed, fun, and very colorful! Beautiful work Mei Mei.

Kids of all ages, even kids at heart like me would really enjoy this book. Especially if they love sports. This book would be perfect for school libraries and classrooms for story time. This is one book you need to read this year!

This newest book in the series sees Lil Peter both receive and give a lesson in leadership.

Selected by his teacher to lead a dodgeball team, at her behest he picks those least likely to be chosen first. Then has to help shape them into a game winning team. How? By leading by example, showing and not telling or demanding.

Delightfully illustrated, this book provides a fun lesson for early readers and children being read-to. It's a worthy addition to this well-thought-out children's series and one that's definitely worth owning or gifting.

A perfect early reader for use in schools!

Some really great lessons to be learnt in this early reader. I love that it focuses on sport (dodgeball) and the classic scenario where kids tend to pick all the best players first to be on their team. I really liked how the kids had to work hard to improve their skills, to become better over a period of time. Lil Peter learnt how to lead/coach his peers to great effect. Brilliant story for instilling a growth mindset!

Brilliant! This little lesson is so profound on several fronts. When I read kids books I think of them as mostly about the illustrations. These illustrations are very well done, but the lesson of the story is priceless. It teaches self-sacrifice and servant leadership.

Wonderful story and illustrations

I loved the central message, of kindness, perseverance and building leadership skills. Instead of the typical focus on winning, it shows what we can do when we focus on learning and building friendships instead.

Lil Peter is a beautifully written and illustrated book 📕 about the importance and differences of true leadership qualities and results! Almost a year ago now, I met Lil Peter and his grandpa and I feel like I am seeing him grow up into the amazing human who writes his story. This is his fourth book and it is an amazing lesson wrapped in sweetness. A lesson in how to be a real leader who people will be inspired by, but to me, also a lesson in how daily practice is often the key to improvement and not just “being good at it”. Be it dodgeball or a language, writing or playing checkers, a good teacher teaches students to learn on their own.
Teach how to teach others!

Will Lil Peter learn these lesson and also win the game with the “kids who always get picked last”?

If you are looking for a number of leadership lessons in a single book you have found the right title.
The book starts with a teacher's request to a very good dodgeball player, “I’d like you to pick the students who usually get picked last, first.”
The simple story ends up with several impressive lessons kids can try to learn from in their lives.
I am not going to spill the beans but Lil Peter's leadership skills are awe-inspiring.
The visuals of the book are a good match to the creative story - they make the reading more enjoyable and the characters more relatable.
I received a free copy of the book from the author.

This book shows how this little boy was able to turn a group of bad dodgeball players into a team and lead them effectively. This is one of the most wholesome reads I've stumbled across, ever. The child in me teared up (and, frankly, the adult in me reflected that sentiment). I highly recommend this for anyone who has struggled with being picked--whether that's in an official school setting or in general.
