Missy Mays’s mother, Naomi, had been the best matchmaker on the west coast of the United States for the rich and unique clientele she worked for. Unfortunately, in Missy's opinion, Naomi was also the meanest and most direct human that ever walked the earth. When she unexpectedly gets run over by one of her clients, Missy takes over the business and tries to make love matches for all the forlorn that cross her path. She believes in love, not as a transaction but as a finding of the other half of your soul, and intends to overturn the business style her mother was famous for.
The only problem is it is nearly impossible to forge a new identity for the business when your mother refuses to let go. She wrestles with her love woes when the new divorce attorney moves in next door and spouts all his anti-love views. Then things get REALLY weird when her mother, in a bid to redeem herself and not get sent to the hot place down under, is sent back to earth to make ten enduring love matches before she can move into the light. Will Missy lose her mind trying to juggle clients and her dead mother’s plethora of opinions? What is a woman to do except try to help ten individuals as fast as possible find love, rid herself of a nosy ghost and try not to fall in love with the cynical divorce attorney next door?
Follow along on this crazy ride of love, redemption, and motherly love gone wrong!
Angelica Kate writes emotionally rich, heart-tugging stories about love, resilience, and second chances. With a deep passion for exploring the complexities of the human heart, her books offer readers characters who rise from pain, fight for hope, and ultimately discover that healing often begins in the most unexpected places.
Death of the Matchmaker has an imaginative premise: Missy Mays inherits her late mother’s matchmaking business—along with her ghost. Her mom won’t pass on until she successfully completes ten matches, which sets Missy up for plenty of chaos. Add in her neighbor, a cynical divorce lawyer, and there’s plenty of room for banter, clashing ideologies, and potential romance.
The problem isn’t the setup—it’s the execution. The story struggles to balance its paranormal comedy with the romance at its center. The ghostly mom brings some funny moments, but her presence often overshadows Missy’s own arc, making it hard for her character growth to shine through. The romance with the neighbor feels rushed and underdeveloped, more plot device than organic connection.
The pacing also feels uneven. Some chapters drag while others rush through key developments, leaving emotional beats underexplored. The side characters, while quirky, don’t contribute much depth to the story, and at times, the book leans on cliché rather than pushing into the freshness its premise promised.
While the book has charm, humor, and moments of fun, it didn’t pull together into a satisfying whole. For me, it was a miss, though readers who love quick paranormal rom-coms with lighthearted hijinks may find more to enjoy.
Missy has inherited her mum's matchmaking agency, though she has very different ideas on how to run it. What she didn't expect was for the ghost of her dead mother to be readily on hand to criticise. Well, who would? Missy and her mum Naomi didn't have the greatest mother and daughter relationship. But to save her mum from an eternity in hell, Missy agrees to a business-related challenge: to match 10 people in genuine love matches( unlike some of the "money-focused" and "status-oriented" matches that Naomi was famous for) The challenge sees them bicker but, with the help of a great cast of characters, more is revealed about Naomi's life that gives Missy the chance to finally understand why her mum was the way she was. The twist towards the end seals the deal in seeing the mother and daughter come closer, and allows them both to move on. The secondary characters are funny, kind, and supportive and help make this an enjoyable story to listen to. The narration is clear and easy to follow and the story flows seamlessly, though I would have liked it to be longer.
The book starts out on a melancholy note as Missy is pondering her deceased mother Naomi's life. Missy's story soon takes a fun, wild turn. She takes over Naomi's matchmaking business, meets a potential "boyfriend" Benjamin, and has to deal with Naomi materializing as a ghost. A hilarious, clever take on mother and daughter relationships. Packed with wonderful characters, surprise revelations and a great closing line I enjoyed this quick read.
“This story was hilarious! The beginning felt a little slow and kind of confusing but it didn’t last long, seriously 6% and I already wanted them to be together. No kidding! The moment I read the blurb I was excited because in the past I watched a Taiwanese drama that was kind of like this. An enemies to lovers stories with a funny vibe. But Missy and Benjamin proved to be one of a kind couple. Their very first encounter was absolutely H*T not in a kind of a romantic way but in the ‘things are gonna heat and blow up phenomenally’ and I’m so happy I wasn’t wrong after that first impression though I must say that the whole ‘spirit mom’ was a great add to the story. Something different but not quite a paranormal side *no telling more about this*. The ending was beautiful and had me enamored. Sweet, funny but mostly romantic. That kiss seemed so insignificant but to me was adorable.”
Don’t let the title fool you. This is a cute tale of a woman, Missy, who inherits her mother’s matchmaking business after Naomi gets run over by one of her disgruntled clients. Mom, however, can’t move on until she helps Missy match 10 people. The book is filled with interesting characters as well as a surprise or two. Nice read.
This was my first book by this author. It is a romantic comedy about Missy, who inherited her mothers matchmaking company when she died. Her mother comes back as a ghost to settle unfinished business, and to make 5 love matches to move on. Missy has to find a way to help her mom make the matches and find peace to move on.
This is a great comedy. Missy, inherits her mother’s matchmaking business after Naomi gets run over by one of her disgruntled clients. Thing is her mum, is now a ghost and is unable to move on until she helps Missy match some clients . A hilarious book that is full of wonderful characters, and a great closing line .
This was a cute and funny story. I was hoping it would have a little more romance, but I did like that it kind of focused on Noami and Missy and their relationship. I did not see the twin sister twist at all. It was a cute story. Heartwarming story
