Immortal Essence

Rate this book
Time is running out; who will get there first? In a pre-industrial society, combined with a small use of high technology, four adolescents get to travel, explore, and discover new ways of training their Essences with Masters in different locations. While resting in a quiet and charming town, Ion, Cedrus, Cleomé, and Adeline learn about an ancient source of power called Immortal Essence. The four teenagers are recruited into a risky mission of locating and retrieving this legendary entity, but they must also secretly race against the dangerous Ruler of Karoush, High Master Zadur, in finding it.

Ion is a recently-turned-fifteen-year-old boy who prefers to sleep on the ground instead of mattresses, he sometimes still acts like a ten-year-old, and he sees the world with an optimistic point of view. Then there is a sweet and loving fifteen-year-old girl named Cleomé who is bubblier than champagne, and the most motivational person anyone could meet. She has the gift of being able to make almost everyone open up to her, no matter how introverted they may be. She is even able to reach the heavily-guarded sixteen-year-old Adeline. Adeline is a hunter, a loner, and a very cunning girl. She has trouble connecting with people, and making friends does not come easy to her, but she finds a friend in Cleomé and the boys. Cedrus is a responsible, but sometimes playful, sixteen-year-old boy who looks like he could bring down a building. He loves combat arts and is very good at setting goals and following through with great discipline. He also happens to be Ion's best friend.

Immortal Essence is the first book of a series of Young Adult Fantasy novels. Book two (Spirit of Onyx) is still being worked on. Getting to know the characters will make you want to see them grow up and follow them to the end.

Such a captivating story!

Love the journey/ adventurous-quest-true friendships type of story and this one definitely fits the category.

The characters are fascinating and truly come to life the more you learn about them. Cleome is such an adorable being!

If you want to escape the routine reality we live in, and hop onto a magical one that will keep you on your toes, then this book will deliver.

Intriguing magic system and well developed characters.

What starts as two friends leaving their hometown to begin their training journey; becomes a much more ill-fated quest that has dire implications. They meet other students on their own journeys and group up. Along the way they all become entangled in a quest to find and defend the mysterious Immortal Essence.

This story is built around a very interesting world that is filled with characters that you will get to know deeply. Their magic, or essence, is what drives them to seek out masters that can train and help grow their abilities. The details of how their magic works and even how some of their tools work are very intriguing and kept me curious throughout. The world seems to be a fantasy setting, but I felt like there were some hints dropped in of it possibly being a post-apocalyptic future setting (maybe?).

The chapters are all told from different characters' points of view, giving you multiple insights into the unfolding story.
My only negative about the story would be the conflict and resolution all happen later in the book and for the most part the rest of the book is just the daily lives of the characters.

The narration is very solid and Skylar Morgan has a great voice. My one tiny criticism was with so many characters it did become somewhat difficult to separate them while listening but the story was delivered excellently. His narration fit the tone of scenes whether they were neutral, somber, or full of action.

I received a free copy of the audible version of this title in return for my honest review.

first off, i enjoyed this narration. It was fab, saving grace to me dnf this ya novel.
i just couldnt really get invested. This may be because of the ages of the main of the group of the main characters.

2.5 stars i cant really advise why? i just really am not overly interested in continuing the story.
defo a ya novel,
world building actually isnt too bad.
There is a slight cliffhanger.

I got lost at the beginning with all of the names from the characters in the novel. I personally struggle when I’m starting a new fantasy book, with a new world but once I got the hang of it I couldn’t stop reading. I really liked the ending, would like to continue reading a second novel.
