The Tarot Spellbook is a journey through the 78 cards of the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, providing a unique spell that corresponds with each card.
Connecting with the 78 cards of the tarot in a meaningful way can be overwhelming, which can lead to scouring reference books and memorizing meanings rather than actually using the cards themselves. The Tarot Spellbook gives you a fun way to learn the cards —and a practical way to work with them beyond divination and reading .
Each of the 78 spells in The Tarot Spellbook is categorized into one of eight popular spell self , change , love , money , career , wellness , protection , and home . Because the lessons taught by tarot cards are those that apply to all aspects of life, from karmic soul lessons to the smaller daily events, the spells in The Tarot Spellbook cover everything you need for a variety of common life situations.
Looking to manifest your desires? See the Magician card and spell. Need to find clarity? Work with the Moon card and spell to dispel illusion.
Each entry outlines the card’s overall meaning, and provides 2–3 journal questions to aid in introspection, reflection, and further connection to the tarot card. Each spell connects to a dominant theme of the card, helping you connect to the card on a personal level, and furthering your knowledge of witchcraft. From candle magick , to spell jars , to ritual baths , and more, The Tarot Spellbook utilizes spellwork of all kinds to truly aid you in expanding your magickal practice on all fronts.
I haven't picked a book up on Tarot Cards/Readings in many years so was very interested in looking at The Tarot Spellbook by Sam Magdaleno. Firstly this book is beautifully illustrated, I found the card images so enticing and almost relaxing. It wasn't heavy on my eyes or distracting which I found in previous books I had read (Way back when I should add!).
Each card is broken down in a way I could understand, but I admit I'd like to have known more on the actual card too. To explain, its like sitting down to eat a piece of cake you just made. You taste the cake and it tastes really good. But have no knowledge of how you made it, no recipe to make it again. I hope that makes sense? What I loved were the spells though. Using Tarot this way is something I had never heard of before. As I have quite an interest in crystals, reiki and meditation this aspect really appealed to me. I'm not sure how much I would practice it, but as I said its something I never knew about before. I also liked the journal questions too, this was a nice addition to the book.
I will say I don't feel my review will do The Tarot Spellbook justice. I read this book on a digital copy and I feel a physical copy would be much better. So, maybe I'll add this one to my Christmas list and get someone to buy it for me! A solid 4 stars, this would make a lovely Christmas gift for someone with an interest in Tarot.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Fair Winds for allowing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Tarot Spellbook by Sam Magdaleno is a wonderful way to take a step further in tarot studies beyond divination.
What Worked for me -This book as gorgeous. Internal artwork and page layout through out is incredible and will likely be even more stunning in the physical copies. -instructions are simple and non path specific making this a good spell guide for eclectic witches and pagans. What didn't work for me as well -tarot being utilized in ways other than divination is fascinating
What didn't work as well for me -many of the card meanings are incredibly simplified. while this is great for those first learning I love to dive deep on card symbolism. -there were some rendering issues near the end of my digital copy
Who I would recommend this book for This book is an excellent resource for those beginning in tarot or wanting to explore utilization of tarot in magic outside of divination.
This book was so cute! It gave easy to understand and modern, real life descriptions of each tarot card and a corresponding spell to try with each. A fun read!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I’m the type of person that wants to learn when a piece of information is surrounded by a beautiful illustration. In the case of this book, the illustrations are cheerful and delightful reference tool you’ll want to use.
There is an index of spells by subject in the back of the book which I love for easy reference. Each card is interpreted through one of the spell categories: self, change, guidance, protection, love and relationship, money, career and school, and home.
I loved how there was a combo of the tarot card and the corresponding spell. However, I don’t think this is a beginner tarot book. It’s better to know what you’re looking at (what the imagery means) and the journey from The Fool to The World. The card summaries are written in a way that would benefit from knowing the imagery and then journaling the questions. In tarot, the suits are connected but there’s no indication of how an Ace of Swords is connected to an Ace of Pentacles.
I think this would work really well as a reference book for anyone working with tarot who also finds themselves drawn towards witchy work. I like how each card is given a detailed explanation. I like how the book is ordered in terms of reference points, and then indexed at the back based on need. I definitely plan to keep this beside me whenever I'm working with tarot cards to see how I can blend the aspects of the craft together. I also really liked how extra detail is given at the start of the book like times of day; days of the week; moon symbolism and so on. It feels as though this is an all-purpose guide, and I really liked reading it.
I am grateful to Edelweiss+ and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book.
The Tarot spellbook is beautifully illustrated and jam packed with lots of incredibly useful information, such as which days of the week have which magikal focus, how to cleanse your area and what magical properties the time of day has. The spells are super relatable; mend a broken heart, get a new job, beat social anxiety etc and I can see myself using these in my day to day life.
This book is easy to understand if you are a beginner or more advanced and not overwhelming like some other books can be. I feel like you would need a second tarot deck if you were going to practice some of these spells though. Absolutely recommend!
This book is possibly my favorite tarot book to date. Not only does it talk about a brief history of tarot but also how much your practice is what you make it and that it is okay to be busy and not always be able to practice daily! The spells all for the most part use easy to have household items and draw from the meaning or the cards (which are on the page next to the spell with the cards meanings and intentions written out) with clear intention. I will definitely be referencing this book often both when just reading my cards and also integrating it into my spell work for a deeper understanding of myself and my craft!
Through "The Tarot Spellbook," Sam Magdaleno demystifies the esoteric tool of the tarot spread to connect the major and minor arcana with embodied practices of interpreting the meaning and invoking desired realities. As a practicing Wiccan, Magdaleno shares her thoughts about the best approaches to integrating tarot readings with the practice of spellwork. The book is organized into chapters dealing with familiar inquiry categories: self, change, love, money, career, wellness, protection, and home. Featured illustrations of the 78-card deck are based on Pamela Colman Smith’s contributions to the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck. Every spell associated with the cards comes with insightful journaling prompts to bring forth greater awareness about intentions.
Magdaleno’s spellwork is a few leaps beyond the casual tarot draw. While the author writes in an inviting and fun way, the content in this book is not designed for the novice tarot reader. Nor is it tailored for people who already have hard-and-fast beliefs and practices tied to the tarot. Readers will find "The Tarot Spellbook" an intriguing way to expand their knowledge about creating sacred spaces, magick rituals, herbalism, and other practices. For many seekers, it is not enough to ponder upon the meaning of each card: it is helpful to act upon actualization and manifestation.
I really enjoyed the history of Tarot that opened the book. It was a bit hard to follow due to the formating of the ebook, but I imagine in a physical copy this would not be an issue. I liked the index in the very back. The book being divided by arcana made for a nice flow. It was a great review for what the cards represented and manifest. Some of it was a little bit hard to follow but easy enough for any reader to figure out. I really enjoyed the importance that self was placed within this book.
I received an ARC of this ebook by the publisher via Netgalley in an exchange for an honest review.
Concise and to-the-point, The Tarot Spellbook is a good addition to the libraries of any tarot readers who want to use the cards as conduits. A tarot deck is made up of archetypes that run the gamut of life experiences and so they can be a powerful tool. I was also happy to see an index in the back that divided up the spells into different categories. It'll make it easier to search if you're not quite sure which card is the right one for what you're trying to achieve.
As someone who still does not yet own a tarot deck (I know, I know. "Why would you read a book about using a tarot deck for a spellbook when you don't own a deck?" BECAUSE I'M INTERESTED!), this was super insightful in helping me learn what each card in the deck is used for and really made me want to buy my own deck and then purchase a copy of this book so that I can use the spells in the future! 2023 is going to be the era of my becoming a real witch, and this is just the starting block. I'm so excited!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book has a lot of suggestions and practical tips on doing magic and tarot together or magic using tarot. I personally won't be doing everything in here because most tips aren't universal or can't be applied by everyone. But this could be a good entry point for beginners in magic, witchcraft, tarot, or a combination of all three.
This book is so great! I'm not new to tarot so i skipped over the card meanings for most of them. What i loved about this book was the spells! there is a spell for every tarot card and they are good and simple. I can not wait to try them. There is also a moon phase suggestion when the spells would benefit most from being cast. So, new to tarot or not, this book is awesome. if you love tarot, you will love this book.
I'm still very new to all of this, and it seemed like a very accessible way to learn more. However, even though the illustrations are great and it's written in a friendly way, I think this is still too involved for a beginner. LOTS of components, which I can't really do right now, as well as sometimes telling you to destroy the card you use. Maybe this will be a better fit for more advanced users.
I have been interested in getting to know tarot more, and this happened to be available on Libby. It's exactly what it says it is, a spell book, so if that's your thing this is probably a great reference for which tarot cards to use for certain intentions. However, I didn't resonate with the spells or with the art style (though I do appreciate the visuals), and wish it delved into the traditional card meanings a bit more. I am aware I'm not exactly the target audience for this book.
I love this book. I am going to buy a hardcopy when it comes out. I was always interested in tarot cards and learning as much as possible about them. This book is more detailed and has more information than any books I’ve had before. Thank you Net Galley
I couldn't look past the colours, I did not enjoy the purple and pink print. I probably should have thought about this better before requesting it. however I didn't think it would bother me so much.
The writing is however very clear and informative. It was just not for me.
Depending on the context of the card, the single spell suggested could be useless to you. Also completely ignores cards in reverse. The book has really lovely art and a nice layout. Just wish it was more useful.
Great guidebook for connecting with each card in its unique way - provides detailed directions for each spell, the rationale, and insight into each card, though sometimes the reasoning for timing or certain ingredients (like crystals or herbs) are unexplained. Still great
Was very helpful. Found for my writing. Trying to create a witch character and this book was extremely helpful on tarot. Not sure who is reccomed this book. 5 star book. Didn't take long to read.
Thank you to Sam Magdaleno, Fair Winds Press, and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read this arc in exchange for an honest review.
The Tarot Spellbook is a fun and beautifully illustrated guide through the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck that gives insight and a spell for each of the 78 cards.
I love the illustration and overall design of this book. It seems like a great way to get to know your deck better, as well as attuning more to yourself. The journal questions at the bottom of each page were sweet and conveyed even more intention. This feels like a cookbook, giving extra details on ingredients, tools, and methods without being a heavy unapproachable tome. I thought it was really sweet and it made me pick up my tarot deck again. I could absolutely see myself giving this as a gift to one of my witchy friends.
Have you ever been curious about Tarot OR Witchcraft and been uncertain where to begin? This is an excellent user-friendly guide to both. While you do not need to practice Wicca to benefit from this guide, it provides an insightful introduction to things like moon cycles, elements, and sigils.
There are 78 guided spells/meditations in total. One for each card in your standard tarot deck, delving into the meaning of the card and its benefits. Bonus! There are even guided journal prompts to help you deepen your connection to your favorite deck.
I highly recommend this work for new and seasoned practitioners alike. It can be used as a reference, inspiration, or simply a way to reconnect with the basics of your craft.
Definitely planning to purchase and sticky note the ever-loving moonlight out of this one.
