This book quickly integrates into a single analysis many of the themes that Sennett has written about in more detail in other books. Not his best book, but still provocative enough at times to be worth the effort. Sennett is one of the rare scholars who writes clearly, which helps him to think clearly and makes for an enjoyable read. I find Sennett's thoughts about the spectre of uselessness and the socioeconomic needs of people, e.g. a culture, some stability, and a sense of contributing to a w ...more

Weber'in 'demir kafesi', yeni üretim kültürünün 'yaratıcı yıkımı', güvencesizlik (prekarite), kısa vadeliliğin sebep olduğu kayıtsızlık duygusu, değişen nesnel standartlar: geçmiş başarı yerine, potansiyel y

Richard Sennett writes in the sort of plain-spoken, honest, humanistic way that I associate with those writers who, depending on how you think of them, were either the last wave of the old left or the first wave of the new left-- in particular, I'm thinking of Paul Goodman, Daniel Bell, Jane Jacobs, and a few others.

Sennett takes their sensibility and applies it to the present era. To that end, the counterculture was fairly capitalist at its root, you can't respect your work if it doesn't respec

Sennett, Richard. The Culture of New Capitalism. New Haven, US: Yale University Press, 2006.

The consequences of contemporary capitalism are double-faced, on one hand the unprecedented economic growth all over the world is undeniable, but on the other hand this growth has not been responded by economic equality and social stability. In fact, inequalities keep broadening, increasing pressure on people and institutions. In The Culture of New Capitalism, Richard Sennett questions the functioning of

This isn't Sennett's best book but it is still better than many other books written by others.

It is a simple book of a series of speeches given at Yale University that integrate the themes from his previous books. Had I read it before 2016 I would probably have given it a lower rating. However, having read it in a Brexit-Trump world has changed my thinking.

Sennet wrote the book in 2005-2006 and his prescient knowledge is almost scary. His analysis that indicates how people are reacting to the N

+some of the analyses in this book blew my mind - possibly because I hadn't read a book like this before (a book written by a sociologist with a "diagnosis" of our time)
+super interesting information on our money system and how things started to change in the 70's/80's as the Bretton Woods system expired
+I think this book changed my thinking a bit and made me thirsty for more knowledge
-I don't think a book like this should be treated as "the absolute truth" - one needs to read and think more in

Of late I have been reading Richard Sennett's new book, The Culture of the New Capitalism. After reading his book on urban design The Conscience of the Eye I was intriqued by the depth and breadth of his writing. He expresses complex ideas clearly and concisely and his new book is no exception. The Culture of the New Capitalismis a collection of his lectures for the The Castle Lectures in Ethic, Politics, and Economics, at Yale University. Sennett's book combines the insights of numerous critiques and defenses of the values and practices of "the cutting edge" of consulting, global finance, the tech sector, and multinationals, and delivers an extraordinarily clear analysis of what these values and practices do to the people who try to work under them, and some ideas about how the deleterious effects that result--particularly the effects of this culture on politics--can be countervailed. I wish all politicians--and all business exec ...more

Insights seemed right: chronicling cultural changes post-Fordism. Nostalgia for the large bureaucracy was somewhat unconvincing. Three stars for large sweeping generalizations without much evidence or qualification.

Interesting analysis about what the mentality of our time (and the new capitalism) does with the people living in the modern society.

Richard Sennett has explored how individuals and groups make social and cultural sense of material facts -- about the cities in which they live and about the labour they do. He focuses on how people can become competent interpreters of their own experience, despite the obstacles society may put in their way. His research entails ethnography, history, and social theory. As a social analyst, Mr. Sen ...more
