Wicked Duet #1

They Call Me Wicked

Rate this book
A blind psychic.

Sounds like a punchline to a terrible joke, right?

Well it is. The joke is my life, and I’m the punchline.

I was gifted with the sight at a young age. It runs in my bloodline and I was trained to handle it from the moment I was born. What I wasn’t prepared for was losing my actual sight.

The world is twisted like that.

So you may be wondering what the hell a blind psychic does with her time.

I solve crimes, bitches.

I may not be able to see if I’m putting salt or sugar in my morning coffee, but I can sure as hell help locate vile criminals and put them behind bars.

Unfortunately, this sort of work tends to make me a lot of enemies and some of them want to see me dead. I’m not a rainbows and sunshine type of girl, but even I will kiss an ass or two to save my life. Even if it’s the three biggest asses in the department.

Love me or hate me, they’re still ordered to protect me.

They may call me Wicked, but I know their secrets...and I have a big mouth.

Author's Note: This is a medium-burn, mfmm, reverse harem novel. It includes explicit language and detailed sexual situations. Only intended for audiences 18 or older.

If I were to give this book a rating, it would be 1.5 stars. However, since I dnf'd the book at 35%, I am going to abstain from rating it.

So, why did I dnf it? Short and simple: Wicked.

I just COULD NOT with the FMC in this one, her immaturity was grating and a complete turn-off. I could NOT for the life of me figure out how anyone, much less (it seemed) like every freaking man that Wicked met, fell for her. I knew that I needed to stop this book, when by 15% in, I was curling my lip in irritation and disgust with her, and then by 35%, I had visions of her being brutally murdered. Yep, time for me to step away.

I absolutely love FMCs that are badass and humorous, and Wicked is neither. I understand that she is blind, and I love that she can laugh about it, but, like, she was the only one laughing because I didn't find her funny at fucking all. I might have giggled maybe once while reading this, and that was when . Wicked has a need to prove that she can take care of herself and needs no one...she literally says it a million times. But, she proved with every fucking action that she took and decision that she made, that she is delusional af because her stupid ass needed to be rescued or helped repeatedly. And honestly?
Her using her gift and divulging people's feelings/fears/situations out loud to everyone around them in an attempt to shame and embarrass said person was fucking gross. Talk about abusing one's powers. It honestly made me sick to my stomach every fucking time she did it. That's a mean girl move if I have ever read one, but yet, I'm supposed to like this FMC? Yeah..no. You don't show you are a better person by essentially making fun of people's phobias/fears and airing their dirty laundry. I wished Wicked would have come at me and aired my deepest fears to everyone around me...then everyone would also see that one of those fears ISN'T stabbing a bitch in her eye...which I would have happily done to the whiny twat.

I have read middle-grade books where the much younger FMC acted more mature than Wicked and that was a problem for me. It took me out of the story over and over again because I could not believe how unbelievably childish she was behaving. Seriously, how was I supposed to believe that this girl who threw toddler worthy tantrums, who called people absolutely ridiculous names, who literally screamed at people for the tiniest perceived slight and/or not getting her way, was someone that not only worked with the cops, but was also someone that was wanted and loved by all these men she met? How?? TELL ME HOW! SERIOUSLY, TELL ME HOW YOU FART SMELLING BUTT NUGGETS. (see, no one likes a screaming, ridiculous bitch)

Anyways, it's safe to say that this one is getting a huge nope from me. Not even the cute raccoons could distract me from the dumpster-fire that is Wicked.

Regardless and though it may not sound like it, I do recommend that people read this book. I'm obviously in the minority in my opinion and think that most people will likely enjoy it. This is doubtless more of a "it's a me, not you" thing.

They Call Me Wicked is the first book within the Wicked duet.

In this you will meet Izabella Wicked, aka Wicked, and she is immature for the most part. Yet, she's completely and unapologetically herself too. She got the shitty end of the eye deal when she lost her sight and her father all in one go. On top of that, her mother basically dumped her like last night's trash and wanted nothing to do with her.

Luckily, she had her nana to take care of her. All grown up, she works with the police force to help solve murders. It's kind of cool that she's a blind psychic and can give them potential leads to look into. Then there's the whole stalker issue and sexual tension brewing within the work force.

Honestly, out of the guys - Kai, Nic and Ezra - I couldn't even pick a favorite. They each and their own unique sexual tension and chemistry with her. I also really enjoyed how they all called each other out on their shit. I'm secretly hoping for more sexy times but also for Wicked to grow up a bit more.

In the end, I think I know who the stalker is, but I don't want to jinx myself. I would also like pet/seeing eye racoons. Just saying.

I really enjoyed this book a lot! This is my first book by this author, and I can't wait to read more.

This story stars our blind FMC, Izabella, aka Wicked. She is a psychic helping her local PD help solve crimes. With the support of her seeing eye trash pandas, she does not let her eyesight bring her down and she always gets the job done. She can read auras and has her own special set of skills that make her, her own weapon.

After a dangerous stalker presents himself and is hurting people on Wicked's behalf, she is quickly put into protection mode and given the security of three detectives she can't help but lust after. Nic, Ezra and Kai are all smitten yet hold themselves so differently, Wicked never knows what to think.

When things personally start to change and heat up, the stalker is only growing more dangerous and Wicked can't help but question everyone and everything she knows. When all four of them are put on temporary time off, the questions are piling up. Will they be able to find out who her stalker is? Will Izabella's upbringing have anything to do with this craziness? Will the guys and her be able to handle this new relationship without killing each other?

I really enjoyed this book. I laughed a lot and was intrigued from page one. It was a definite page turner that I didn't want to put down. I love the whole romance/crime/mystery thing going on and am really looking forward to book two!

*Overall 5/5
*Med Burn (42%)
*Heat? 4/5
*First person POV (Wicked only, with 1 chapter exception) I would like to see some of the guys POV in book two maybe?
*Trigger? Yes - check before
*Ends on light cliffhanger

Wicked is a blind psychic who helps find dangerous criminals. This of course means that people want her dead and now she's got three not so willing body guards who are to protect her at all costs.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book, just because it sounded very cheesy. I mean a blind psychic? That just sounds cliché. But the book was surprisingly great, and wasn't actually as cheesy as I thought it would be (although it did have its moments). I loved Wicked and her men and their relationship together. Her men are on the grumpy side at times, but their chemistry with her was all around great.

I liked that the FMC was blind and gave some representation to that community. I also liked that she wasnt a perfect person, and had not only snark and attitude, but flashbacks to previous crimes, and moments that showed she was still a person. It made her more relatable and easier to connect with.

A blind psychic! I love the concept:) forced proximity to the guys also forces this badass to start feeling again, opening her heart for friendship, hope and love. Unfortunately you never only get the good things in life so there is fear, anger and frustration as well. Fear for a stalker who understands her gifts, anger for loosing her independence and frustration for the males who test the limits of her patience. Throw in an uncaring mother, a nana suffering from dementia and a boss who is like father and you gave an amazing mix of characters and story elements.

Received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

They call me Wicked is the first book in the Wicked Duet. This is my first book by Persephone Steele and was blown away by how much I enjoyed this story. They say that once you lose one sense, another one enhances. In this case, Izabella or Wicked uses her gift or "second sight" to help solve murders. When she starts investigating a serial killer, danger lurks in the dark. Three hunky bodyguards are sent in to protect her.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was drawn in by Wicked's personality. I loved her so much. She was not brought down by her disability, but made her so much stronger. I felt she had a Daredevil vibes going on. This story was so suspenseful and seriously so many twists and turns. I was hooked from the very beginning. Can't wait for the final book in this duet.

When I saw that this book was contemporary I ALMOST declined the arc I was offered. Luckily I saw the synopsis of the book in time and realized that even though it's a contemporary book it has just that little bit extra making it worth it for me. I therefore quickly changed my answer to yes and I was quite excited about getting to read this arc. So, yesterday, as soon as I finished my other read, I dove right in!

This book is, despite the heavy themes, a lot of fun to read. And that's mostly because the main character is quite comfortable with her blindness and her gift. She knows all the jokes, she knows all the right answers and she knows when to use her blindness and when to not use it. It's a state of accepting I can only dream of reaching when it comes to my own chronic pain, but I'm looking forward to the moment I do.

Although the crime elements were not as prominent as I had thought and expected them to be, I loved how Steele managed to make the descriptions of all the horrible murders quite vivid and gruesome. I don't get sick quite often, but some of those images were really sickening and since the main character is actually kinda re-living these moments the descriptions are really detailed! Not that we get many answers in this book. We'll have to wait for the next one for those.

The book doesn't really end with a cliffhanger, but I like how it does end with the question who we can trust and who we can't trust. Of course, I have my suspicions when it comes to who might be the stalker, but I'll have to wait and see if I'm right. Luckily our heroine has a few amazing guys protecting and helping her, even if one of them needed a little more encouragement to get there compared to the others. I hope they get more point of view chapters to get to know them better!

(ps. Can we quit with the "I'M NOT AN INVALID" in books? No-one is in-valid! People are more or less disabled, mostly by the world around them, they're not in-valid! It's really time to erase the word from the dictionary!)

I was a little bit reluctant to read this book, but I went ahead and gave it a chance. Oh, boy, this was so much fun! Wicked is such an interesting character. She’s always snarky, blunt, and fun. I love how her blindness isn’t her defining characteristic, but something that is just part of who she is, and she’s shown as capable and strong because of it. We get to know her so well. Not only that, but we also get to know her three love interests very well too. They also have their own very different personalities which is sometimes hard to do in RH. Add in some detective work (this is the only really kind of weak point of the story; I’m pretty sure police departments don’t work this way) and some hot times, and you have a fun book. There are some triggers, so be warned ahead of time. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Okay so actually, the start of this book didn’t capture my interest. There was a lot of internal monologuing and I was having a hard time getting into it. BUT it really picked up and grew on me as I kept reading. I ended up enjoying the story a lot and didn’t want to put it down. I am looking forward to the next one.

*TRIGGER WARNINGS*
I don’t think the trigger warnings on Amazon were sufficient though. Yes, it says darker themes and explicit language, however there are violent and graphic descriptions and depictions of torture, murder, assault, and a very very close call with a rape that’s stopped in the nick of time. Essentially, this is like an episode of Criminal Minds because we aren’t present for most of these scenes but they are happening in ‘flashback’ descriptions that the FMC views from the perspective of the victim, and in the case of the almost-rape it occurs in real-time as she is the victim.
The book overall has a lot of humor which sits in contrast to these scenes and I hesitate to call the book ‘dark’ despite them, but I think it’s very important to note that these scenes do occur and the torture described is extremely graphic.

This story feels like it could be the illegitimate love-child of Criminal Minds and Medium, with a whole lot of extra spicy bits added to the mix. There’re the gritty details of a police procedural, the eerie chills of a psychological thriller, the host of unexplained phenomena of urban fantasy, along with all the angsty drama of romance. This book crosses genres and does it with a gruesome flair that is both frightening and enviable. Take the author’s warnings to heart because it goes to some dark places in the human psyche and shows us some of the worst things people can perpetrate against one another. I don’t even want to try and guess what Wicked and her detectives will face next, but I’m dying to find out.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.

Mouthy and sassy girl here!

I liked this book and its originalty! The FMC, Izabella, is a blind psychic which work for the police, helping them solving cases. She has two service racoons 😂 who are adorable and super clever!
The guys have very different characters and the assh*le one is really a piece of work!
The plot is captivating and I really look forward reading how they will solve that case and who is the stalker! Plot twist in the making! 😏

After a horrible accident takes the life of her father as well as her eyesight, heroine Izabella AKA Wicked learns to make the most of her new normal. With the gift of sight Wicked finds herself working at the local precinct on cases that could use a 'special' touch. When a case finds Wicked at the center she is ordered to team up with three local hotties and fellow officers who will eventually become her harem. I really enjoyed this book and Wicked's outlandish ways!! Considering she can't see she really learns to make the best of her situation and hones all her other senses. For the most part the romance is rather slow burn in this book and it really worked for the situation going on with them all. Best part to me are Wicked's trash pandas (raccoons) who are really her service animals. They are truly the star of the show here and help Wicked in multiple ways including tormenting the guys. So far this is a fun duet and while it seems obvious who the stalker is, I'm hoping in reality I have no idea. Off to book 2!

Trash Pandas…

Wicked is a blind psychic detective with 2 little furry sidekicks Snitch and Gizmo, her eye-seeing raccoons, yes I said what I said, raccoons!
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this. It’s outrageously funny with a dash of romance and a whole lot of suspense!
Can’t wait for the conclusion of this duet!

I unfortunately DNFed this one. One reason, the FMC. She was a bully. Not caring that she was spilling other’s secrets and deepest fears. She had no compassion. Making a heroine strong and witty, does not mean making her a mean and hurtful human being. I loved the premise. Disappointed that the heroine was an exhausting jerk.

Hilarious — who doesn’t love a wide-cracking, smack-talking, wise and gifted heroine? — and steamy! Four galaxy stars for Wicked and her sexy male detective harem. Plus plus for her seeing eye trash pandas!

Gifted with psychic abilities but blinded in a car accident that killed her father, Izabella Wicked finds purpose as a consultant to the homicide detectives in her town.

When mutilated bodies turn up, it’s Wicked, Nic, Kai and Ezra that see the disturbing coincidence that anyone who wrongs Wicked ends up dead.

I had my suspicions on the culprit, but darn the ending doesn’t reveal the unsub only more questions emerge!

No Rating, because I didn't get far.

I didn't like the attitude of the FMC. While I do like if people are confident, she was too confident. She is also very rude. Of course (beside loosing her eye sight which is sad) she has a gift, then she has this cute trash pandas and on top of it a lot of money.

I’m honestly in shock by how immature the heroine is. All her interactions with the love interests are her basically sexually harassing them. She acts like a toddler — no impulse control, says the first thing in her head and thinks she’s cute for it.

I blinking loved this book! It was such a unique story. It drew me in from the very first page and kept me hooked until the very end! Wicked, the FMC, is a smart-mouthed, witty, and blind psychic working for the police department. She's fiercely independent, with a little help from her guide animals, Gizmo and Snitch, two adorable raccoons, and is known to get herself into some sticky situations, running in head first without thinking about the consequences. It's a romantic suspense thriller and, for me, Persephone Steele does a grand job of juggling the romance (reverse harem) and the thriller (which was pretty gruesome at times). I was a bit shocked when I found out who her love interests were. I just wasn't expecting it to be the guys she worked with, and how quickly they accepted sharing Wicked (Although Nic is debatable haha. I think he'd rather have Wicked to himself). I loved how different their personalities were and that they catered to the different sides of Wicked.

I loved the narrative. So easy to get into. I loved Wicked's wit and that she doesn't take herself too seriously in regards to her blindness and can joke about it. Being blind myself (blind in one eye, insanely crap vision in the other), I saw so much of myself in her and she had me laughing so much because she dealt with her disability the same way I do; smiling, making jokes and making light of it, because your disability doesn't define you and life is too short to dwell and have a chip on your shoulder.

I highlighted a fair few quotes but this one made me chuckle and I must use it wherever possible haha...

"People will forever be saying blind as a penis snake now instead of blind as a bat. And it will have started here. Right now. Out of my wicked brain. I will go down in history."

I had it in my head that the stalker would be Ryan, until Arlo but he then gets killed, so back to my theory about Ryan... Then a twisty curve ball is thrown towards the end and I refuse to believe it's that person! It just doesn't make sense to me, though I do understand her distrust. I'm praying she's wrong. It's so twisted if it is but, alas, I have to wait until the next book, No Rest For Wicked, which is released June 2023. Next year! It's so long away!

Thanks Persephone for making me feel "seen" and creating such a relatable character.

Wow, just wow. I'm not normally a 'gusher' with my reviews however this book really did tick all the boxes for me.

Did I laugh out loud? - tick
Did it bring a tear to my eye? - tick
Was it a gripping storyline? - tick
Was there a sassy, sarcastic, ballsy yet vulnerable fmc? - tick
Were there 3, totally hot, yet completely different men vying for attention? - big d*ck, oops I mean tick!
And were there 2 cute, intelligent, seeing eye raccoons? You betcha

Izabella known as Wicked, is a blind physic who works with detectives to solve crimes. She takes absolutely no prisoners and her caustic mouth helps keep people away. After all, if you don't rely on anyone, they can't let you down, right?

For all of Wicked's physic abilities, she doesn't seem to pick up on the feelings of 3 of her male colleagues Kai, Ezra and Nic until they're assigned to help keep her safe from a stalker. But is she brave enough to let them in emotionally? She definitely doesn't mind letting them in physically though and there's plenty of build up and heat.

Along with a thrilling and graphic (at times) story, there is a lot of humour particularly with the antics of Gizmo and Snitch, affectionately known as the trash pandas. They are trained, seeing eye raccoons and honestly they could have their own book.

There is also so much love and softness to the element of the story involving Wicked's Nana, very poignant yet still with some humour.

Persephone Steele is a new author to me and her books will be a 1 click buy from now on. The story is well thought out, the book is well edited, the descriptive language is amazing.

Definitely a 5 star read, super excited for book 2.

They Call Me Wicked, the first book in the Wicked duet by Persephone Steel, Is a medium-burn RH romance with a unique twist and I absolutely loved it! Steele has hit it out of the park with this one—compiling a fabulous story that will draw you right in and never let you go!

Our amazing FMC Izabella Wicked may be blind, but she is full of snark and definitely not sitting out on the sidelines of life in any way! Having the gift of sight, Wicked works with the police as a psychic consultant and appears happy with life and what she does…that is until fate intervenes in the form of a new case that will rock the foundation of her world as well as for three of her deliciously handsome detectives that she “works” with.

Full of puns and witty humor, this story definitely captured my attention and didn’t let go! I absolutely loved how resilient Wicked is and how competent she handles all the things that life can throw at her—including the sexy guys that soon find themselves entwined in her story. And what can I say other than Gizmo an Stitch completely steal the show!!!

Overall if you love a good psychic, medium burn RH full of mystery, intrigue, suspense, hot steamy connections and of course a variety of sexy alpha males, a fierce and snarky heroine and two adorable seeing eye raccoons that keep you laughing…this is the one for you! I seriously cannot WAIT to see what’s in store for our characters next!

This is my first read of anything written by Persephone Steele. I’m happy to say it has set the bar very high. I was instantly sucked in! Addicted to everything Wicked!

This book manages to make you feel a range of emotions from happiness, hurt, love and so much more. I found myself cackling and snorting but also wiping away a tear once or twice. The depth of these characters suck you right in.

Wicked is the perfect FMC. Strong but also beautifully broken and unwilling to let her guard down. She hides behind snark and her gift but has so much more to her than expected. I loved the snippets of her past and slow unraveling of what makes her the way she is.

The guys, Nic, Ezra and Kai, compliment Wicked perfectly. Each one giving her something she needs or lacks. They do this all while having their own personalities that make them stand out. I’m excited to dive more in to their pasts in the next book.

While this book is ultimately a romance, it has so much more! I loved the mystery behind the stalker/killer. So many little hints make me think I know who it is, only to be thrown for a loop. I like the suspicion and question aspect of this book. It makes you wonder who you can and can’t trust. I’m 100% here for it.

I’m so excited for the next book and am hoping and praying it’s released earlier than next year.

I’ve got opinions

A very good book marred by a couple overly realistic characters. How can a character be overly realistic? They are the @ssh@les who bite without understanding, guard against hurt with tripwires and offer cruelty as the opening volley. We’ve all met one like them, and while real life may lead us to understand the soft inner core of these poisonous souls, fiction shouldn’t have to be that way - at least to me.

I want to like Nic, but his spikes are too sharp and his distaste for his humanity too apparent. Easily redeemed if the next book opens him up a bit, and he can learn to bloody apologize. The same holds true for Wicked though. She’s funny, honest and has reasons for the way she is - but her protections are cruel and painful. By the end of the book she had grown some and started to open, SOME. Book 2 will hopefully continue her journey. Kai and Ezra? Now that’s what I am talking about for fictional men. Few foibles and rather unrealistic in the grand scheme of things, at least when backed by two other characters that are just so “human” in their interactions. Sigh.

Braced with plenty of humor and a fast moving plot, this is an engaging novel the ends in a soft cliffhanger, though the questionable emotional hook of it hurts the most.

I’m eager to see what happens in the next installment.

In all fairness, I should start by saying that I’d like my females characters to be strong and independent and I knew by the looks of it that the possibility of it being the case in this book was not high and it was right.

I hate when the characters are describe as independent and strong a self-sufficient but their action prove otherwise and they’re pretty much useless, which makes no sense to me why men fall in love with them.

Sadly, this was the case, the FMC likes to think of herself as self-sufficient but she is blind, she doesn’t have any real training like personal defense and is not aware enough of her surroundings to not have trouble with objects and other people. She is also very immature and she uses everything that she catches about other people (she senses memories and thoughts) against them even if they don’t fully deserve ii, because she want to came across as badass which she doesn’t.

I DNF at 21% and I think that the most iintrresting parts of the story were: 1) her animal companions, 2) maybe the other love interest and 3) the psychopath who kills someone because that person hurt FMC.

New to me author, Persephone Steele, gives us a little bit of everything in this book. Snarky FMC, spicy RH, mystery, violence (check your triggers please), a little bit of PNR psychic action, humor, furry fun trash pandas. Having the FMC blind was an interesting twist, and was handled well. I have to say, at first, I found Wicked annoying, defensive, and prickly... but as the story went on, it was understandable. We also saw her come out of her shell a bit and grow as the guys opened up to her. Though this is mainly in a single POV, due to her psychic ability, we are able to get readings on the other characters, so we get to know them too. This was a neat way to go, and I enjoyed the story from that perspective. The books leaves us hanging- we still don't know who the stalker is. We can all have theories and point fingers, but we really don't have a clue. All in all, it was an enjoyable book, with a solid 4.5 from me.

Wait, what? So be warned, it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and you’ll need to wait for book 2! But it’s not a bad cliffhanger! The mystery and intrigue in this book is so well written. I mean, I can't tell who the murderer is in most films, shows, or books, even when hubby says it was clear as day, but the mystery is so well written that I have no effing idea!

The book was described as medium burn and that’s fairly accurate. The spicy scenes sizzle with emotion. I’m not really into paranormal stuff usually, but this was so well written that I was hooked.

Wicker’s blindness is addressed with sensitivity and humour. As much as I love each of the 3 guys, Gizmo and Snitch steal the book! They are perfect and I can’t wait to read more about them!

I’m so grateful to have received an ARC and be allowed to leave an honest review.

**I really wish i could give this book way more than 5 stars**

Blind Psychic Detective - Wicked (FMC aka Izabella) is abrasive, caustic and pretty much anti-social to everyone. For me its her wit, sarcasm and cutting remarks that i loved but that doesnt make her popular with the people that she works with. So with the help of her Trash Pandas - Snitch and Gizmos who are her seeing eyes and essential to her job as well as her protection as sorts. With their help and other powers as such she helps the police catch serial killers but it also kinda puts her in danger herself.

Swoon the dynamic between her and the guys that she works with - Kai, Ezra and Nic is damn hot. Funny at times too! Dark in places but i was completely riveted to it from the first page. I couldnt put it down it was that good. Im dying for book 2 now

Loved this book! Wicked is such a great character! She’s a blind psychic who is trying to solve murders. Unfortunately the suspect has to be someone in her life because they keep going after people who hav e wronged her. Due to this, she has to live with three other detectives, Kai, Ezra and Nic!

Wicked starts out having a large protective barrier between herself and the rest of the world but I love the way that her men slowly chip away at it! Ezra doesn’t speak much but when he does, I legit melt! Kai is a hilarious playboy who might not be as much of player as wicked seems to think. Nic is the grumpy one that you can’t help but love. But we all know the stars of the show are her adorable trash pandas!! I cannot wait for the next book!!
