”The King from Canarsie” starts with Davy King (famous actor) being dropped off at Hudson University by his agent. He’s taken a break to get a real college education.
The story is dedicated to Danny Kaye so it’s not surprise that Davy resembles him.
Davy sees Robin go by in the Robin-cycle and remembers that Batman’s sidekick has been spotted around New Carthage a lot lately.
Later Dick Grayson sees Davy fielding questions from a group of students around him. Dick sees a heavy stage door about to fall on Davy and tackles him out of the way.
After classes, Davy asks Dick about volunteering to help with the kids Dick helps out.
Over the rest of the week Davy is subject to a string of unlucky accidents. Robin saves him from going over the cliff in his convertible.
On Friday, Dick picks up Davy in his microbus and they go to see the kids. Including Tommy Duffy. Tommy is unimpressed.
”Is he still alive?”
But while Davy is winning the kids over with his charms, “a high-strung college student” hears something outside and when part of the building comes crashing down, changes into costume.
Rounding the building he sees a man in a handkerchief masks and a fedora (gotta have the hat!) telling him not to come any closer or he’ll press the dead-mans switch vial of nitroglycerin to bring the whole building down!
That was a silly story and I do wonder what inspired Elliot Maggin, but 7 pages of puff piece isn’t neccessarily a bad comic.
