Great book for the period before the II world war, but goes over the post war reconstruction and economic miracle way too fast.

Concise and well-written history of modern Japan from end of Tokugawa Era to the 1980's. A good introductory book for those relatively new to Japan history. Contains a good section on further reading.

Purchased in Japan, edition dated 1990. A classic political/economic history of the Meiji to current period. Very very interesting--a good overview of some of the key developments. Doesn't really explain the post war miracle except in general terms however.
