A Rejected Mate Shifter Romance

I’ve been rejected by everyone—but an alpha heir wants me to be his pretend mate.
As the only wolf shifter in my pack not to shift, being rejected from my home when I turned eighteen was not unexpected when the shifter war is so close. But being sent to a secret academy full of immortal wolf shifters, demons, and teachers with no morals wasn’t something I planned for.

Luna Alpha Academy is for rejects only.

They choose wolves that no one cares about if they go missing and if I can survive long enough to learn the dark magic they teach, I might even be welcome back home as a wolf-witch.

Only catch?

My tutor is a hot shifter asshole who takes what he wants—this time it’s me.

In exchange for extra training, Atlas wants me to pretend to be his.

Every kiss, every possessive touch, every growl to anyone that comes near me only makes me want him more.

But I can’t have him. Not really.

He’s the alpha heir.

I’m a wolf who can’t even shift.

We don’t belong together, and it’s fake. It can’t ever be real.

Dark magic is my future and my only way back to my pack.

This is a full-length trilogy full of sexy alpha males, steamy scenes, a strong heroine and a lot of sarcasm. Intended for 17+ readers.

I liked this book so much! Though there were a few things that annoyed me it was overall a very good experience. I'm very invested in this story and its characters, so I'm anxiously anticipating the next book release!

One of these things that I wanted more of was background to the world the authors created. This could have been easily inserted had the heroine actually been shown attending classes (aside from her fighting/training classes that is). Having teachers spout off about the history is pretty interesting if you ask me.

The heroine (Nyx) started off so disheartened with her circumstances. I hated how her "pack" treated her. The "traditions" can rot in a grave for all I care. I liked how she evolved when she had people who wanted her to succeed helping her through everything. The chemistry she had with Altas was coming off the pages with how potent it was. My one qualm with her specifically: the body shaming. She says and others point out how curvacious she is when from what's been put in the book she's actually not? (That's my interpretation of it at least! I hope I'm wrong!) The cover doesn't do a great job showing it either. Or maybe people think that the model on the cover is curvy? I look at her and see a rather thin person at an average weight, not curvy. Maybe it was the way that the heroine described herself I thought she was supposed to be mid to plus sized? So maybe that's on me?

Onto another tangent: Nyx's necklace! I thought it was something important to the plot and then it's never mentioned again. #Oops

Addison (the cliché bully) was really grating until the last few pages in the last chapter of this story. All the times where she was unhinged actually made sense and was a reaction (*ahem* overreaction) to an actual circumstance. Her doing what she did had a basis in reality and I kind of just feel sorry for her now considering what Altas is putting her through.

Until I got to the last chapter I would have told you that I really liked Altas. That even though he started off as an *ss he got better about it shortly after. BUT with that ending, I would also like to see him rot in a ditch thank you very much.

One last annoyance I had with this novel, in general, was grammar and the lack of contractions in the dialogue specifically. It's not bad enough to ruin the book but it was enough to pull me out of the story. I'd like to see this book get another round of editing for grammar and overall clarity because there are some sections that get confusing.

This is the first in a rejected-mates trilogy! Nyx belongs to a pack that’s strict with its traditions. On Mating Day, she and all the other wolves that have turned eighteen in the past year must choose their mates. The only problem? She hasn’t shifted yet, and nobody wants to be stuck with someone who’s weak, especially during a time of war. She’s the only one who isn’t paired off, and as a result, she’s rejected from the pack.
Fortunately for her, there’s a mysterious academy for rejected wolves, and she’s eager to join them. At this academy, werewolves are taught dark magic that will help in the battle against the werebears. And of course, she has a connection with her tutor, who was once an alpha heir until he was rejected from his pack for reasons unknown… This book is suspenseful, though the romance felt rushed at times. They start off as a “fake relationship”, but I’m not really sure of why the author went that route. The relationship and her friendships with others at the academy felt a little choppy at times. It’s only 200 pages, and I felt like I wanted more scenes between characters, building up their relationships, rather than having mini-time-jumps. So my only complaint about the book is I wish it was longer and more fleshed out!
This book does end on a cliffhanger, so I’ll be diving into the next immediately!
Trigger warnings: No real triggers aside from typical violence and light bullying (I say “light” because it’s not detailed, mostly just mentioned in passing from her time with her pack)

The good guys embracing their inner dark side to fight evil has me cracking up 🤣

The "traditionalist" rules in the werewolf society are dumb and TBH make me root for the werebears who are trying to cull them

Nyx's snark is very negative and whiny so it's hard to relate to or like her as a heroine. She has no personal character growth besides latching on to the first guy who touches her sexually.

What's the deal with the necklace?
Why does her sister happen to know specific instructions about how to get to the academy? Maybe these will get answered in book 2, but they come off as a red herring instead of chekhovs gun.

The romance is hot garbage and not in the good way, rip. Also lol at Tobias falling in love with her in less than 24 hours after meeting and becoming permanently friendzoned. author wrekt him

Luna Wolf by G. Bailey Regan Rosewood
2.5 ⭐️

If you’ve been around my good-reads awhile you will know I absolutely love werewolf books, they’re an addiction. I was so damn optimistic starting this and, unfortunately, I’m so sad to say this didn’t do it for me.

The characters had no chemistry, and it wasn’t even just with the love interest. It was very insta-love—insta friends, kinda like wham bam, nice to meet you ma’am and suddenly Nyx is best friends with side characters. We don’t even get a chance to fully meet them and she’s kissing the next alpha heir.

The demon side plot and dark magic didn’t work for me either. It was too rushed in every way, and I just don’t see myself continuing on with the series even if it did end on a slightly intriguing cliff hanger. And I wasn’t talking about the mate business, that miscommunication or whatever it would turn out to be just made me roll my eyes so far into my head all I saw was dark 🤷🏻‍♀️

Quick read with a lot of depth!

Great storyline! Love where Bailey seems to be heading in book 2. I have a strong feeling someone in Nyx inner circle is a bad seed.....*cue dramatic music*. And what a mess Atlas has made. I can not imagine a way that Bailey will get him out of this unscathed.

Great quick read!

Happy reading,

As soon as I read Chapter 1, I was hooked. Nyx, the main female character, immediately drew me in because I could identify with her. I will not reveal the story, but the plot revolves around a girl who has been bullied all of her life and feels like she's never been "good enough" or "part of". Nevertheless, it has some pretty cool twists and a lot of humor. There are also a few steamy moments sprinkled throughout as well. The action is very intense. The action is filled with all kinds of intense scenes. The book was extremely easy to read and it was fast-paced as well. Both the storyline and the layout are clear and understandable. The book is worth buying.

This has been a really enjoyable which craft/shifter book. Nice rejection start and a lot of good angst, it’s not a long book so some of the feeling and emotion is a bit stilted or happened way too quickly, we could have revealed in it a lot more but for a nice light read it’s been great fun and I’m invested and moving straight to book two!

DNF

I could not finish this book. The female main character is only 18 and she really acts like it. The dialogue is cringey and awkward. The plot line is laughable and not believable at all.

When I was asked to review Luna Wolf by G. R. Bailey and Regan Rosewood, I jumped at the chance. Last year I read Her Wolves by G. R. Bailey and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to discover a new series by this author.

This book is about wolf shifters who are at war with the werebear species. Being totally honest when I read the synopsis I thought werebears sounded a bit silly so wasn't sure how I was going to get on with it. However, when I became immersed in the world it all made sense. The main focus of the story was the rejection of Nyx by her pack and the relationship that develops between her and Atlas, her mentor at the academy where she ends up.

I did feel that there were some holes in the narrative, as in lack of details. There was no explanation of the consequences of the characters shifting into their wolf form for example, as in what happens to clothing. They go from human to wolf and back to human without this being addressed. I felt Nyx was thrown into her new setting with minimal explanation, which she accepted, and I would have liked a bit more detail or at least angst from Nyx about her situation.

However all of this paled into insignificance for me, due to the relationship between Nyx and Atlas. This is what made the book a four star read. While again, there could have been more depth and exploration of feelings, there was something about the interactions between these two that hit me in the gut. Every time there was a scene between Nyx and Atlas, my tummy would flip and I would get a rush of butterflies. I absolutely loved them together and for this reason could not put this book down. I read it within a few hours and when I finished I immediately downloaded the second book on kindle.

Their relationship starts off a bit shaky, though I wouldn't go so far as to call it enemies to lovers, but it is a 'fake dating' trope. I will be honest coming to the end and suspecting what I now suspect, I am not sure why the dating had to be fake. If I am right in what I suspect, I also think book 2 is going to give me even more butterflies. I don't want to give any spoilers, so if you have read this book, please DM me so that we can discuss ☺️.

This book is what reading is about for me. Easy to read, fun and giving me lots of feels.

This was a gifted copy but the review is my honest opinion.

Good Start

I enjoyed this book it wasn't very long so I easily read it in less than a day. Ugh that ending what a dick Atlas is 🙄

Nyx is about to turn 18 and like every other werewolf that is when they chose their mate fated mates are so rare that they don't really wait around for them. It should be a happy day but for Nyx it's anything but she's never showed signs of having a wolf and without a wolf she won't have a mate and without either she'll be rejected from her pack.. what a shitty day....
When her sister gives her instructions to find an academy for rejected were she has no other real options but to go in search but you'll only find it if they want you to? Who? Wolf Witches as they're called rejects who are taught how to use dark magic but demons, you'll become immortal when he bind yourself by pledging your life but everything comes with a cost. When Nyx is partnered with a broody asshole named Atlas to help her learn her day can't get any worse or it can he cons her into playing his fake gf to get his father off his back in exchange for extra lessons which she desperately needs because despite all the pain she's suffered Nyx can't harness dark magic. When Atlas' crazy ex trys to kill her she realizes why she can't harness dark magic... because her magic is light and she's the first in a thousand years known to harness it. But when the war with the Werebears ramps up she's forced out into the field with Atlas and not really knowing how to control her new magic which literally makes her body glow like a beacon and whilst things heat up with Atlas everything comes to a crashing hault when she discovers a big secret he's been hiding from her. They may have started off as fake dating but the lines got blurred and then her heart got broken 💔

I have very middle of the road feelings about this book. Or rather, I liked the book fine, with the exception of a few critical elements and I'm afraid that if I innumerate them this review will come across as far more critical than I intend. So, let's establish up front that I liked the book fine, but have a few critiques that shouldn't nullify the previous statement.

My biggest issue is the inconsistency in the characters, Atlas especially. He literally acts as if Nyx is a huge imposition on one page and by the next he's hitting on her and has had a complete personality transplant. There is literally no transition between his attitudes shifts. It was abrupt, unfollowable, and pulled me out of the narrative harshly. (Worse, it happened more than once.)

My second issue is how cliched and predictable the plot lines are. The primary immediate villain is a scorned woman fighting over a man—sometimes I want to shake authors and scream in their faces that women really can have motivations that don't involve men—and the big reveal is seen coming from...well, basically the beginning. Honestly, it all felt a little too focuses on these small scale dramas instead of the larger end-of-the-world level drama that is sketched out at best.

The writing is mechanically fine, if a little rough around the edges. The over-arching world seems interesting and I think I'd read another in the series. But, again, I'd call this a middle of the road read.

On a totally unrelated note, I'm SO GLAD the book got a new cover. I've stumbled across the old one (with the pretty girl on the cover). And it made me seethe. A big deal is made in the book about Nyx being 'curvy' (and I do love a plus-sized heroine). That girl on the cover was not. So, I'm glad I don't have to be irritated about that.

This book was not like the other shifter books I have read, but I really liked it.
It has what for me are key elements. Action, challenges, love and last but not least, magic.

My heart broke for Nyx. Firstly she is unable to shift and secondly, nobody wants her as their mate. I thought it cound't get any worse, but then her Alpha rejects her from the pack to never retur ever again. Literally I was huffing of the unfairness.
Nyx' Sister mentions there is an academy for rejected wolves, where she might find her new home, if they will let her attend.

A sigh of relief left me, when she gets accepted. But only to be replaced by annoyance. Although Nyx findes some new friends rather quickly, there will always be bullies. A couple of seniors makes Nyx to their new target.

Can she succed at the academy? Will she learn to control her magic? Is she going to survive? What is she?
Hopefully some of my questions will be answered in the next book.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I really enjoyed Nyx and Atlas. They had chemistry even when they were at odds. Nyx's issues with her magic are just touched upon. I look forward to finding out more about them and how they relate to Atlas and his type of powers. The story is interesting and steady paced. It would have been a 5 star but the transition between the relationship between the two seemed a bit rushed. Reading it we knew but I wish it was a bit smoother and not like an on/off switch.

Was hooked the minute I opened this book 😍

My bitch face appeared when Atlas turned up 🙈😂 first time I've ever gave a snider to a book 🤣 I've hated characters before but he.... annoyed me 😂 had to keep telling myself "he's just a fictional character, he's just a fictional character" 🙈🤣 but then of course I started to like him then hated him again at the end🙄🤣 it's definitely a love/hate relationship with this character 🤭 as for Nyx, I absolutely loved her. Her attitude was definitely my favourite thing about her 👐

Cannot wait to read book 2 😍 if you love werewolves and a bit of magic then you need this book in your life 🥰

The start of this book (25%) didn't really impress me. Nyx can't shift and is likely going to be rejected by her pack when she turns 18. In anticipation for this, she and her family do literally no preparation. Nyx has not attempted to develop any skills to make her valuable to her pack, nor has she gained any skills or knowledge to help her survive outside of her pack.

When she gets kicked out, her mother gives her a mysterious necklace and alludes to the fact that Nyx is a "miracle baby," but then refuses to provide any additional detail. Instead, she packs some granola bars for Nyx to take with her. Not even a real lunch - just snacks. Nyx' sister suggests a creepy academy is the right choice, and is able to provide vague directions to it, but refuses to provide any additional detail about how she knows about it. Nyx' dad would rather Nyx be homeless than join this maybe-real academy. He refuses to provide any additional detail about why he feels this way or what he knows. They say goodbye, assuring her that they're here for her, from afar. But not really. Because again - they have made literally zero preparations for this, and refuse to provide Nyx with any information.

Nyx finds an academy representative after accidentally tripping and falling over a cliff (to reiterate - she has zero skills, including ability to walk). She has no choice but to go with him because her choices are to a) die of exposure (zero skills or supplies - not even a sleeping bag); or b) get raped by werebears who are dedicated to world domination (wait - what? I feel like I need more information and background about why the werebears are so evil).

As the book proceeds, it’s clear that these wolves are dumber than a box of doorknobs. Nyx punches herself in the face to control her magic at one point and it felt really fitting and right. I finished this book, but it made me want to punch myself in the face, too.

It was basically a “meh” book. I just wanted a werewolf book and this was the only thing that caught my attention. It started boring as heck— by narrating how much of an outcast she was on her pack. Then the good stuff happened when she got to the school, met Atlas, and you know how you get this first glance of a character and you think at least half of the essence it’s gonna last till the end?

Well, that didn’t happen here.

Atlas was described as grumpy and blah blah. And, when he starts being a romantic interest, his whole personality changed. Suddenly he was teasing, kissing her, and then one week goes of their “fake dating” and they are suddenly so smitten?? Can’t be apart from each other? We couldn’t even read the evolution of their relationship!! We just read that “oh wow they kiss so much and have the hots for each other..”
like what is that!!!?

That’s no way of describing a relationship. What about the little interactions? What about the conversations? We just know that she is sarcastic and keeps snapping at him when he’s teasing her. That’s their relationship in a nutshell. It wasn’t enough to form a romantic relationship, I’m sorry. Also, the overly dramatic descriptions of the sexual tension literally killed the tension that was slowly building. From 50% of the book everything became a mess bc it happened too fast.

And btw the plot of her being the only one with light magic was so predictable. There wasn’t anything in the plot that blew my mind. The idea of werebears was also kind of weird to get used to, ngl.
And there were so many moments that made me cringe ughhhh please 😭😭 I hate second hand embarrassment

What I love about any Ms Bailey book or any book she collaborates in is the characters. They are not only likable but you find that you genuinely feel for them. Well at least I did. More so with Nyx.

Nyx is basically an outcast in her own pack from everyone except her own family. Only they can't help her when she's rejected by not only her mate but then her pack. Which results in her enrolling at The Luna Wolf Academy. A place for rejected wolves and grumpy alpha***** like Atlas. Who Nyx gets saddled with to help her out. Their dynamic and banter had me laughing in parts. The steam they had was pretty hot too.

It was a cracking start to this series and I'm looking forward to the next book because I loved this one so much

Nyx is the only wolf shifter in her pack not to shift and is rejected from her pack when she turns eighteen. With nowhere else to go, she is sent to a secret academy full of immortal wolf shifters, demons, and teachers.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚. ───

“You know,” Atlas says, his green eyes flashing, “that attitude is only going to make me enjoy your ending.”

“Right,” I fire back, “because your opinion on my attitude is something I care about.”

“No wonder you were rejected by all the males in your pack. That mouth of yours would scare anyone off.”

THAT WAS CRAZY. The man knows that she got rejected and no one wanted to claim her as a mate and still called her out on her attitude. It had potential, considering I didn’t DNF. It got bad once Atlas showed interest because he had a complete personality change. He was introduced as the alpha heir grump, but suddenly he (1) Asked Nyx to fake-date and then kissed her (2) Claimed her in front of the school (3) Jealous of Tobias (4). It did not align with the Atlas that didn’t want to train the new recruits, but suddenly he likes one? I don’t understand how he went from being a grump, to calling Nyx “doll” and acting flirtatious. It would have been great to see some prolonged tension during the training, but the fake-dating presented itself too early. There was no reason Atlas should have needed her help, there was no urgent need. He didn’t need to be possessive, it was not cute — it was weird! His behavior was not attractive, it was a major red flag. He came on too strong and I don’t understand how they fell for each other, if they knew each other for less than a day. Suddenly knew he wanted
Nyx to be the one to be his fake-girlfriend? Be serious.

“She doesn’t have anything to worry about,” I mutter dryly, my eyes fixed forward.

“Oh, she does.”

Why does the ex-girlfriend have something to worry about when Nyx and Atlas have known each other for less than a day, and suddenly, he chooses her as a fake girlfriend? The pacing is BAD, and the dialogue is even worse. ONE DAY.To make it worse, he has this cocky attitude claiming that she is going to beg him soon for sex when they just MET. Where is the chemistry? I am mad because the tension could have been decent if the pacing was way slower. Instead, they all have forced dialogue and made-up tension. He sees it as a beneficial agreement to fake date because he gets a fake mate, and trains her properly, and people won’t mess with her. I’m just annoyed that he brought this up so soon. He seriously could have waited at least a WEEK to decide that he needed her instead of calling her a doll after being a broody grump. A real grumpy alpha male would let that slip much later on.

“She’s mine. If anyone dares to touch her, you deal with me.”

The alpha heir just claimed me in front of the entire academy.

THIS IS BAD. Absolutely no one cares that this man claimed you in front of everyone. No chemistry, no tension, no angst….BORING. These two have nothing remotely interesting about them and they are just doing this because it’s beneficial now. What gave Atlas the idea that she was the one for him? I wasted my time with this book foreal.

“I know. You haven’t paused to even think about it, but you will, and I will wait,” he interrupts. I’m speechless for a second, and I clear my throat. “Tobias, I’m sure that there is someone absolutely perfect out there for you, but it’s definitely not me. You’re very handsome, but I just want to be your friend.”

“I might be reading this wrong, so stop me if I’m babbling, but I just don’t feel that way—”

Tobias meets her on the first day, and suddenly, he’s upset because he likes her, but she’s “dating” Atlas. What was so special about Nyx that had these two men wanting her. I don’t understand. There was no connection; she was not a great FMC, and quite frankly, the development of her having light magic was nonsense. Tobias knew nothing about her besides being new, and suddenly, he was ignoring her because she didn’t realize that he liked her, and he thought they had something…COME ON

I was very excited when I got my hands on Luna Wolf, book 1 in the Moon Alpha series for the @lovebookstours tour. It’s set in a supernatural academy, and ever since reading JLA’s Covenant series, this has been one of my all-time favourite storylines. It certainly didn’t disappoint.

So what’s it about?
It follows Nyx, a wolf shifter who is exiled from her pack when she fails to obtain a mate during the mating ceremony. Cast out, with nowhere to go and little knowledge of the human world, she’s relieved when a scout takes her to Luna Wolf Academy. This academic institute teaches rejected shifters how to harness dark magic and become Wolf Witches, who protector the wolf packs against their enemy werebears. As Nxy learns her new craft, she’s faced with danger, intrigue and her growing attraction to her brooding tutor Atlas.

This was such a great read! It contained all of my essential ingredients for a successful supernatural book: a broody hero with a mysterious past; a strong heroine with latent powers; an enemies to lovers storyline; a mean girl; love rivals; loads of action and drama; and a healthy dose of angst. Perfection!

I loved Nyx and Atlas and their relationship gave me allll the feels. Broody, dark haired heroes who’ll burn the world down for their girl are my favourite and Atlas is a perfect example of this. Nyx shows great character development throughout the story as she finds friendship and acceptance for the first time, and starts to harness and embrace her powers. Despite the rough hand she’s been dealt in life, she’s incredibly brave and I admired her sunny outlook on life and her constant sarcasm! Atlas definitely met his match.

I really liked Nyx’s friends Ivy and Tobias and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them throughout the series. The rivalry between Tobias and Atlas could be interesting too . . .

The world building was beautifully executed and very easy to understand and I enjoyed the unusual blend of the shifter and witch genres. The story was well paced with a great balance between the character relationships, romance and action. It sucked me in from page one and I couldn’t put it down.

Luna Wolf is a brilliant start to the series and I can’t wait to see where the storyline goes from here. If you love a slow burn, enemies to lovers story with heaps of intrigue, drama, cool magic and plenty of wit, then you need Luna Wolf on your TBR! I’ve already downloaded book 2.

Atlas is the lead male and the author really has painted a picture of his appearance in my mind off the alpha male her really is.

📈 Plot
A young werewolf is exiled from her pack. She seeks refuge with a pack of misfit exiled werewolves in a secret sanctuary. She begins to find her place in the world, is nominated a mentor and falls head over heels for him. He's future is preordained but she has no idea how it is going to play out.

📢 Favourite quote
"What am I going to do to the warebears? XXXX at them?" I readacted a bit #nospoilers

❓Question for the author
Is the character Atlas based on anyone in reality?
And can I please review Nox Wolf? I loved this book so much.

📝Side note 📝
So this book is actually two books in one, the first by G. Bailey (Luna Wolf) & the second, an exert by Regan Rosewood (Supernatural Shifter Academy)
The second book looks like a great read too, I want to know what happens Millie.

🎧 Audiobook listeners side note 🎧
I spotted Lunawolf on Audible and downloaded it but thought I should say it only contains Luna Wolf and does not have the book Supernatural Shifter Academy in.

🌻SpLD side note🌻
The paper copy of the books initial chapter pages have an image under the text, which with my SpLD, I found challenging to read. Since it was only on the first page of each chapter it did not detract from the book.

Easy quick pick read

Series, book 1

Intro:

Nyx is our 18 year old main character. She's the pack reject, as she isn't able to manifest a wolf form. She's spent her life suffering under Pack Society that values each member for their skills or contributions to the whole. Nyx is bullied by all and seen as lesser because she can't manifest her wolf.

Nyx is kicked out of the pack, and her family makes a lame, token attempt at being disgruntled/upset by this. There's a quick mention by her family that "Wait - there's a mythical place!" Nyx has never heard of this obscure place. Her sister gives her the bare minimum of directions to allegedly find the secret place. Whattayaknow... after walking a few hours, Nyx finds it, and finally, we learn the "place" is an "Academy" for "Wolf Witches."

Themes:
Academy - paranormal - rejected mates (though fmc did not have a mate reject her, her pack rejected her)

• Who was your favourite character, and why?
Charles. He seems the most knowledgeable about anything going on in this book, and he's present only a hit few minutes.
• Did the characters feel real to you?
Nope. The book was a 4 hour read. Pace was so rapid and "jerky" between scenes and plot development that I didn't really feel it was believable or couldn't immerse myself. The characters have rapid mood swings, and their interactions feel robotic.
• Did the story keep you guessing?
In a way... I am not sure it's a pleasant way. More like *throws hands up, exasperated* - of COURSE she found this random mythical place after a few hours of walking with the crappiest directions in the world! Makes tons of sense that people know where to find the place of "MYTH"
• What was your favourite part of the book, and why?
I don't have one. I felt like an ancient cat-lady reading this book (I'm in my mid-thirties). Too mature for this plot.
• Were certain types of scene written particularly well - for example, sad scenes, tense scenes, mysterious ones...?
No.
• Did the book make you laugh or cry?
No.
• Did the story grip you and keep you turning the pages?
I... persevered.

Audiences that may enjoy:
Young adults - 16-20, maybe.

I'm not feeling any itch to continue the series despite the cliffhanger ending.

You can read all of my reviews at Nerd Girl Loves Books.

This is a decent first book in a new fantasy paranormal series about shapeshifters at war. Nyx is a wolf shapeshifter that can't shift. When she turns 18 she's banished from her pack and is recruited to attend Luna Alpha Academy, a school that accepts rejects from packs and trains them to be magical fighters. Nyx is less than thrilled with the prospect, but having nowhere else to go and desperate to become useful so she can return to her pack, she reluctantly agrees.

While at the school Nyx is assigned a mentor named Atlas. He's an alpha heir with an attitude and they immediately clash. But, Atlas has his own problems and promises to provide Nyx with extra training if she promises to be his mate. Of course, this ticks off the alpha trainer ex-girlfriend, and you can imagine the cliché catfights that ensue. Atlas treats Nyx like an inconvenience one minute, the next he's all hot and heavy over her. Typical "complicated" male that doesn't know what he wants. When the shapeshifter enemies strike Atlas' pack, Nyx and Atlas rush to their aid.

Let me first start by saying this is a quick and easy read and for the most part I enjoyed the book. It's what I'd call "lite" reading and involves stereotypical characters and tropes, but that's not to say they can't be fun to read if you're looking for something fun and easy to read. Nyx is fairly well developed, although she acts inconsistently at times. Atlas is pretty one-dimensional and his character is all over the place. I enjoyed Nyx's friends, despite the male friend falling in puppy love with her (pun intended) and acting overly protective of her and wounded when he sees her kissing Atlas. Nyx and Atlas' "love story" didn't feel authentic and seemed to go from cold to "I love you and can't live without you" in an instant. They did have a bit of chemistry, although some of the steamy scenes were a bit cringy.

This is a promising first book in the series and I'm interested to see where the next book goes. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Love Book Tours. All opinions are my own.

This book was really something. I scoffed after reading.

The storyline is beautiful (The only reason I finished) and I wish the world building was much better.

This isn’t a rejected mate romance. Not really. It’s more of a I-didn’t-get-picked-in-my-pack’s-weird-mating-ritual-because-no-one-liked-me-due-to-my-lack-of-a-personality -and-so I’ve-fallen-in-love-with-the-first-Alpha-I-came-across type of romance.

The romance seemed rushed. Most of the characters lacked personality. Some of them were unnecessarily aggressive. Even the supposed meaningful conversations fell flat because they came at the wrong moments and turned into too much of an info dump.

I don’t know why but I really don’t like Nyx (Took me a sec to even remember her name) She complains a lot, tries too hard to be snarky/funny, and falls in love with the first guy that shows her some attention.
Le sigh. She’s been through a lot so I can’t blame her. Much.

There were some inconsistencies in the story. Like how when Nyx was packing up her things to leave her pack, she says she’s doesn’t have much in the way of belongings yet in Atlas’s room, she mentions that she’s a hoarder. Why didn’t that reflect in her one room? Why didn’t we see her struggle with things to take since a hoarder would definitely have too much. There were other things but it would be too much to note.

Where were the other characters? Didn’t Nyx have classes? I expected to find out more about the school, about her growth away from Atlas, her interactions with other people. What peculiarities did the demons have in conversations and mannerisms apart from having pitch black eyes? Did the teenagers in the academy not do anything for fun?

I didn’t even enjoy the switch in Atlas from brooding and being a general A-hole to acting soft and protective? Too fast, too suspicious.

And the necklace? Why was it given? No notable high-ranking official for the were-bears? Why is Claire so weird?

I had way too many questions and I’m not inclined to even find out in the next book because I feel I would be sorely disappointed.

Luna wolf 🖤 Thank you @gbaileybooks & @lovebookstours For sending me a signed copy of this beautiful book in exchange for an honest review. The cover & art are so pretty!

Blurb-
I’ve been rejected by everyone—but an alpha heir wants me to be his pretend mate. As the only wolf shifter in my pack not to shift, being rejected from my home when I turned eighteen was not unexpected when the shifter war is so close. But being sent to a secret academy full of immortal wolf shifters, demons, and teachers with no morals wasn’t something I planned for. I might even be welcome back home as a wolf-witch. For 17+

My Thoughts- When I read this was a steamy fantasy with werewolves set in a supernatural academy I was like yasss! this is my type of book! 🙌🏼 and I couldn’t wait to read it🤍 The main character Nyx being rejected by her pack and literally sent away on her own made me root for her from the get go. I’m still pissed they just waved her off with just the hope she would make it to the academy instead of actually making sure she got there safely ✋🏼 but I love how she still kept her sassy and sarcastic personality. We love a strong female MC. This book had everything I enjoy… witchy magic, werewolves, supernatural academy, an enemies to lovers situation, age gap, hot possessive male character, fake dating, paranormal characters, lotsss of drama and a plot twist at the end that makes you want to read book 2 immediately. This was an easy, quick read and a good start to a trilogy. My only critiques is that I hoped for a little more character development and I think there were some holes in the narrative at times for example what was the deal with the necklace it seemed significant but then nothing came of it?? And what was the reason for the fake dating?? & I didn’t like that the MC having curves was seen as a bad thing and it took a man (Atlas bless his soul) to make her embrace her curves. Kinda wish she was as confident as she is sassy. But anyway I wasn’t too bothered because I really enjoyed the plot. I will be reading book 2! Thank you again 🤍
