Mall Out of Luck

Rate this book
The end of the rainbow never looked so golden as in this standalone St. Patrick’s Day themed quick and queer novella meant to leave the reader feeling so darn lucky.

Saoirse (pronounced Sur-Sha) Walsh hails from a town of less than five hundred people in Nebraska—and she’s already left three of them at the altar. Now she’s moved to Michigan to start over as a business woman and tonight’s the opening of her bar—The Lucky Leprechaun—and, as luck would have it, it’s also St. Patrick’s Day so it’s not surprising when she finds herself charmed by one of the patrons at the bar.
Nell James believes that everyone makes their own luck, and she has no time for shenanigans. As a brilliant scientist and former foster child with a pet snake and a rooster-themed kitchen, she’s as rare as a four-leaf clover in the small Michigan town. But when she meets Saoirse and finds themselves tumbling into some unlucky shenanigans, Nell begins to realize that she just may have found her perfect match in the woman she meets at the end of the rainbow.

A sweet and sexy lesbian short story about two women falling in love at the mall.

Mall Out of Luck by Sarah Robinson
3rd At the Mall series. Contemporary F-F romance novella. Can be read as a stand-alone.
Nell finds out her favorite bar has been sold to a new owner and she finds the new owner irresistible.
An introduction of romance. Two women that have a mutual attraction. A beginning relationship.

Short and cute but missing the middle.
Nell is a STEM woman but is only really mentioned in the very beginning. Is she still there?
She made a sample drink for St Patrick’s day celebration. I want to know what was in it. And then I want to know how St Patrick’s day opening was for the bar. Did the darts tournaments start?
So many questions.

It's sort of a cute novella, but not really my tastes.
It's a novella so things happen fast, but there are too many things at play for my liking.

This was a quick, fun read!

Nell is attending the grand opening of a bar near her under new management. When she checks it out, she meets Saoirse and is fairly smitten right off the bat. Saoirse, dubbed the Runaway Bride, has left 3 other people at the alter and the news is already digging around for details.

I read this in an afternoon and it was a fun little F/F novella.

A few kisses, no on page sex, and has some twists I was not expecting. Also quite a bit of humor! I was only sad the snake wasn't in the epilogue :P

It definitely stands fine as a stand alone, as I have never read this author before. It was on the short side, so I wasn't sure I was feeling the couple's delivery of a HEA, especially with Saoirse's background, so I think the epilogue choice here was perfect - far enough into the future to really get a feel for how they have fallen in love even more since the reader left them.

Saoirse has just moved to town and is the new owner of Nell's favourite bar. Having left 3 people at the alter (2 men and 1 woman), Saoirse is the talk of this small town, but not in a good way! And Nell has burned her bridges when it comes to being a lesbian dating in this small town. The sparks instantly start to fly when these two meet, but so does some bad luck at The Lucky Leprechaun.

When I received this book from NetGalley, my initial thoughts were that the cover is really cute and the premise is really cute. It wasn't until I opened the novel for the first time, that I realized this was actually a novella. This entire series is a novella! Okay, no biggie, at least I'm prepared. But I wasn't prepared for how incredibly rushed this novella was. It literally went from "Okay, let's try this" to two years later. Instead of trying to tell an actual story and developing these characters or whatever, it felt like the author took the easy way out. Even the epilogue was rushed. It seemed like it just ended in the middle of the scene and was just rather abrupt.

Overall, just not for me. Too rushed, too many questions, too "insta-love-y". Try me again with a full length story from this author. 2/5 stars

A huge thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for a free copy of this book for my honest review.

Super short story with a meet cute, a weird coincidence and then an epilogue that wrapped it up better than the ending did. The two main characters meet at the mall-one is taking over the new place and the other is a regular at the old place. Things move super fast from there and they pretend to be married for a news story.
It was a super fast read and kinda cute but I feel like it needed a little more story.

This was a super short lesbian romance novella that is St. Patrick's Day themed. The two main characters meet at a mall under unexpected circumstances. I thought it was cute but it does move very fast, so it was hard to feel fully attached to the characters or completely believe in their love story.
I liked the beginning- the meet cute was fun and there were some interesting moments. The second half felt a little rushed and overly dramatic. The conflict wasn't what I was expecting it to be (a huge plus) but it was resolved a little too quickly for my taste.
It was entertaining enough to read this but it isn't one that will really stick with me.

The cover of this novella is cute and I excited for a fun St. Patricks Day romance. Instead I got a super short story with a nice meet cute, an awkward coincidence, followed by an epilogue. There wasn’t enough here for me to call it a romance or even much a story. And the cute cover doesn’t look like the characters description. I enjoy novellas but I need more than I was given here. This is the third the At the Mall series but is considered a stand alone. Thank you to NetGalley and the Author Collective 20 for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a super-cute St. Patty's Day themed sapphic romance. When Nell's favorite bar gets bought out, she is very nervous about who the new owner will be. She is scared of how the atmosphere will change, especially with the small town she lives in.
Saoirse is the new owner of an old bar. She is worried the town will not welcome her, especially once they find out about her past. She has left three people at the alter. Which is why she is running away to start a life where no one knows her. But of course, small town, word gets around.
Throw in an ex-girlfriend that they BOTH have dated and things.get.wild.
I am conflicted about the ending. It is a HEA, but not the one you were expecting. I totally understand the direction, and appreciate it. But at the same time was also disappointed? It's hard to really say without spoilers. You'll see.
This is a quick, cute read that I definitely recommend!

This is a very short sapphic novella following two women: Nell (a vaccine scientist and former-foster kid) and Saoirse (a commitment-phobe who has left three different people at the altar). Saoirse takes ownership of Nell’s favorite bar and the two begin a relationship.

Now, I have nothing against novellas. I think novellas can be really great and the perfect size if the story fits it. This just did not work. There was way too much that needed to happen and too few pages. The entirety of the plot can be summed up in three different points (meeting, awkward coincidence, epilogue) and there is just…nothing. This felt like a wordy story outline rather than a completed work.

My biggest pet peeve though is truly the cover. I know that authors usually don’t have control of this, so this isn’t anything against Sarah Robinson but it IS negative for whoever made that decision. Nell is described as a Black woman and Saoirse is a red head. The hair color can be overlooked—even if it is annoying—but to LITERALLY whitewash the cover’s depiction of Nell is reallllly problematic. This is something I’m really disappointed in.

I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. ARC provided by Author Collective 20.

Nell James is a brilliant vaccine scientist who unwinds at the local bar, Throwback Jack's, and believes that everyone makes their own luck. Enter Saoirse Walsh, a notorious runaway bride who just moved to town and has become the new owner of the town pub, renaming it The Lucky Leprechaun. After a brief meeting and many shots the two connect more than either expected.

Mall Out of Luck is a very short and sweet sapphic novella with a St. Patrick’s Day theme. I do wish it was longer in length; it felt like the epilogue came way too soon. That said, I have read a lot of one shot fan fictions in my past so I'm used to this feeling of constantly wanting more. There are many ways Sarah Robinson could expand the story if she ever chooses to do so as this was only a sneak peek into the start of Nell and Saoirse's relationship.

My only other note would be that the girls on the cover do not match the description of the characters in the story.

Thanks to NetGalley for the St Patrick’s Day pick-me-up.
A short and sweet romance, which goes from 0-60 incredibly quickly. While we don’t get much pause for a break, we can see exactly how this is going from the off.
Saoirse has bought herself a bar and is preparing for opening night. She’s used to running away (having been engaged three times) but isn’t prepared for the arrival of Nell in her life. Within minutes of their first meeting Nell is pretending they’re married, and before we know it the book is over and they’ve got together.
This isn’t going to be a book I’d recommend in a hurry as everything hurtled along at breakneck speed. In a romance, sometimes it’s nice to see them working their feelings out.

I loved this adorable St. Paddys Day lesbian romance about an altar shy Irish bar owner's quest for a love - and a successful St. Patrick's Day opening.
Set in the same mall as the Valentine's Day romance Mall You Need is Love, this is a stand alone, sharing only a few mall vendors in common. It's funny, sweet and just a little steamy which relies on a couple of coincidences to provide more than one happily ever after.
If you're looking for a little light reading to go with your shamrocks and green beer, this the perfect story to warm up from those cold March winds.

4.5/5

I have some hesitancies about novellas. I prefer full-length novels but I’ve never been against shorter books. I just don’t tend to read them as often. However a lesbian book with that title and cover, I couldn’t pass it up. All my thanks to Netgalley and the author for approving my request to read this book.

This book was adorable. I absolutely loved both of the characters. They were cute together. They were also really interesting as separate characters too! Saoirse in particular interests me. I just want to know more about her past and why/how she ended up where she did. Nell seems like a sweetheart, but her snake freaks me out.

The plot was an interesting premise. I do quite like when people meet because one gets ownership of a place the other visits regularly. It’s a weird thing, but I enjoy it. It’s a forced proximity sort of thing without being forced proximity. So I was looking forward to seeing where this book goes after they meet at the bar. I will admit that I wasn’t expecting it to go in the direction that it went. I’m definitely not against it, I thought it was glorious, I just had no idea that it was headed that way. Altogether though, I thought the book was well-paced for a novella.

As a note though, I definitely would have loved this book to be longer. It’s good as a novella but the premise is interesting enough that I’d love to see a full-length novel of it.

This was a cute, short read. I definitely think it works well if you want something with minimal angst. It’s a sweet romance with likeable characters and I like that it took place around St. Patrick’s Day. Do remember that it is a novella though so things move fast.

This short novella Mall out of luck by Sarah Robinson is set inside a pub in a large shopping center where the previous novella Mall you need is love also starred.

A nice story, which is pleasant to read and invites you to read more Mall stories that hopefully will come.

Mall out of luck is an LGTQIA romance about the love between two women. The tension between the two women is immediately palpable, but they have to overcome some hurdles to move on. It has humor and the setting is well thought out. Because it is such a short story, the development of the characters is a bit lacking, but by giving special character traits Robinson manages to make them come to life.

(What is it about)

The pub in the shopping center has just been taken over by Saoirse and she wants to make a success of it and open it on St Patrick's Day. Nell is a regular at the pub and is eager to know what's changed now that it's under new ownership. Both characters are a bit of misfits, but feisty women. Nell works as a lab technician and researcher and often has to endure something from the male colleagues. Saoirse has already broken off engagements three times in her quest, something that constantly haunts her. Saoirse and Nell's meeting takes a turn when they become fodder for a gossip newspaper and then there's an ex on the doorstep who won't be put off.

This was actually the third book in the 'At the Mall' series, but it read fine as a stand-alone St. Patrick's Day story. When I picked it up, I didn't originally realize how short it was, but it worked out great as a fun story with quirky characters to get me in the mood for St. Patrick's Day (note to self: make sure the kids wear green to school on Thursday...)

Nell is an independent vaccine-scientist who grew up in foster care. She's stayed close to one brother from her youth, but generally tries not to get too attached to people. When she hears her favorite bar is changing hands and having a new re-grand-opening on St. Patrick's Day, she can't resist going to check it all out as soon as possible.

This is how she finds herself behind the bar inventing green drinks for Saoirse, the new owner, just in time to make up a doozy of a story for a nosy reporter. While the lesbian love-story novella doesn't pack a lot of surprises, it's definitely a fun and entertaining read. And I give bonus points while the story takes place in Michigan!

I gave this fun book 3 out of 5 stars, and may even be inspired enough to whip up a green cocktail later this week!

I adored this so much and I do accept that this was a novella, but I just wanted more 😍I enjoyed the characters but wanted to know more about them, there were some inconsistencies that didn’t make sense how could a regular in a bar not know the management had changed. I loved the twists in it (no spoilers) . Overall Its a lovely read and I liked it, I just really wanted more of it.

• Mall out of Luck
• Author Sarah Robinson
• MC Saoirse & Nell James
• St. Patrick’s Day

Nell James is a scientist at the top of her field. Former foster kid, she has risen above the statistics and made something of herself. She frequents a local bar after work to unwind. On St. Patrick’s Day, she heads to the local bar and runs into Saoirse.

Saoirse, the new owner of the local bar, which she has renamed The Lucky Leprechaun. Sariose is new in town but her reputation has followed her. The runaway bride, jilting three lovers at the altar.

Saoirse and Nell are both strong main characters. They meet, and sparks fly.

This is a sweet lesbian romance, about two independent strong career driven woman, never giving up on love.

If you are looking for a fun romantic novella I highly recommend this story.

A few words I could use to describe this novella are: cute, fun, short, quirky, and a great St. Patty’s day read.

I loved that this was sapphic and I that it had an Irish main character! However, I felt like it was a bit of a letdown too. As soon as I thought we were getting somewhere it just ends and they live “happily ever after”. I just needed a couple more chapters!

Saoirse (pronounced Sur-Sha), has taken over the pub; one of the pub's regulars is Nell. While Saoirse is known to be a run-away bride it doesn't stop her from falling in love.

While the two are busy romancing it doesn't take long for things to get complicated when Nell's ex-girlfriend is actually Saoirse's ex-fiancee she recently left at the alter.

I genuinely really like this author and have read a couple of pieces by her previously, but I have had issues with this one.

The thing I love about Robinson's writing is that she doesn't hang around with her narrative. Her characters always get to the point, whether a novel or novella.

This makes whatever she writes a fast-paced read that you can get into straight away.

However, I have two issues with this one; I wanted this to be longer. I do understand that this is written as a novella but it had a very abrupt ending before the epilogue, with a single paragraph explaining what had happened. This could have been a really good narrative if it had had an opportunity to be longer.

Also, Robinson writes her usual chapters splitting between the two main characters, which she has always done, but something I have noticed in all her writing is that she switches POV within the chapters, which can actually get quite frustrating and confusing while reading. It was more frustrating in this one as the two main characters were female so became very confusing.

I still won't rule out this author from my list, I am just disappointed with this novella.

Mall Out of Luck by Sarah Robinson is another of her novellas about merchants in the mall and their love lives. The newest merchant has bought Throwback Jack's, her favorite bar, right before the Pot O'Gold, the big darts tournament. Being a scientist in a high-pressure vaccine lab, Nell needed something to take the pressure of. Darts was it. She needed to see what was going on. When she entered the bar she saw an attractive redhead behind the bar. At that moment a reporter entered and started berating the woman, Saorise, not about the bar, but about the fact she had had three fiancés she had left shortly before the weddings. Did she have a commitment problem? Nell hated it, so she stepped behind the bar and told the guy there was obviously no commitment problem as they were married. Where had that come from?

Sarah's stories are cute, if somewhat lacking in depth. This was no exception. I was a situation some people of been in, queer or not, and it evokes in them the same emotions it evoke in Saorise. Not only self-recrimination, but doubts. A queer person, opening a new business doesn't have enough to worry about? Reports too often seem to go for the salacious rather than the important things. A good story.

This was a cute addition to the Valentine's novella I read last month. We get a few quick little nods to Mara, the main character of that one. The bar in this one is in the same mall as the arcade in the other one which is a fun tie in.
Our 2 main characters and POVs we get are Nell and Saoirse (sur-shuh). Nell is a regular at the bar in the mall which has recently changed ownership to Saoirse and the St Patrick's Day grand opening is coming up. Saoirse is (obviously) the new owner of the bar and has a reputation for leaving 3 people at the alter despite trying to move to this town and open this bar with a clean slate.
This novella is basically the first few whirlwind days of Nell and Saoirse meeting and having an instant connection. I'm not huge into instalove, but this was still cute. They both had their things they were working on which were nicely explained in such a short time. Saoirse lost her mom, the only person she had in the world, to cancer and now she is scared to lose such an important person in her life again. Nell was a foster child and is trying to figure out how to separate the family relationship she always wanted and a romantic relationship she wants in the future.
Overall, this was a quick, cute read. The ending came a little bit quickly and abruptly though.

Thank you Netgalley, Sarah Robinson, and IMAG for allowing me an E-ARC of this book to review.

I have been WAITING for this book for so long and it was nothing short of fantastic!
Since Nell was first introduced, i have been hopeful for a book with her. And here it is and I LOVE IT!

After finding out her favorite bar is under new ownership, Nell is curious. The news hasn't painted Saoirse in the best light, and she wants to be sure her favorite hangout hasn't been thrown to the dogs. Upon Nells arrival to the bar she meets saoirse and a connection is felt. While getting to know one an other a nosey reporter pops up harassing Saoirse. Nell quickly comes to her rescue but in a way neither expected.
Now Nell and Saoirse must pretend to be married for the sake of the media.
Will their fake marriage be just for show or will Nell and Saoirse find that maybe their luck hasn't run out quite yet.

Nell and Saoirse are literally GOALS. Their quick friendship and care for each other is what love stories thrive on. I loved their quirky banter back and fourth as well as the few twists that literally had me laughing and even once dying of embarrassment for them. Having a rocky past is hard but both found peace within each other to tempt fate one more time.
The ending had me in a fit of giggles as it was the LAST thing i expected.
The At the Mall Novella's have quickly become some of my favorite reads. They are so quick and light hearted. Perfect for a feel good moment when all your other moments aren't so good.

Mall out of luck by Sarah Robinson.
At the Mall Book 3.
Patrick’s Day so it’s not surprising when she finds herself charmed by one of the patrons at the bar.Nell James believes that everyone makes their own luck, and she has no time for shenanigans.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved Saoirse and Nell. They were my favourite. I loved the cover too. 5*.

A charming short story whilst part of the At The Mall series it’s easily read on its own. Things happen fast & as it's so short there's not much room for character development. I read it in a sitting. I liked the humour & there were a couple of surprises. I'm also glad there was an epilogue, which rounded off the story.

This Sapphic meet-cute novella is the third book in Sarah Robinson’s At the Mall series of holiday-themed contemporary romance, but the story stands alone. It’s a cute St. Patrick’s Day themed story, and I liked both of the main characters, as well as Saoirse’s employee, Donner. It was an enjoyable enough quick read with a few laughs. However, the romance was a bit too rushed for my taste, and the ending felt very abrupt. The author included an epilogue that resolved some of the unanswered questions, but I found the transition from main story to epilogue very confusing.

These characters and the story setup had so much potential, but the story progressed too quickly. It seemed like the characters fell in love before actually getting to know each other. Also, I love a good fake marriage, but the author didn’t do as much with that as I hoped.

Although there is some swearing, there is no violence, and no sexual activity beyond kissing.

🍹🍸Quick & a bit quirky🐍

🍀What better place to base a St. Patrick's Day romance than in a bar?! A sweet idea that covered all the bases of an instant attraction romance in a short, fun story. Author Sarah Robinson gives both female leads Saoirse and Nell some serious sadness in their backgrounds that made me really glad that they're moving forward and finding professional and personal fulfillment in spite of their pasts. I particularly loved the quirky cameo appearance of "Laura Dern." (No, not that one!) And the author even provided a final twist to this HEA romance that I never expected. What a nice love story and achieved without steam. I was impressed.💋

This was the second story I read in this holiday romance series and I look forward to more.

Thanks to Author Collective 20 and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the story; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

This is the second book I've read that's based at the Mall, I enjoyed the valentine themed story so I was happy to read this one too, I'm ok reading romance books that may contain FF, MM etc, there is no descriptive sex scenes in the book, and I was really enjoying the first part of the book. How Nell meets Saoirse... the books 100 pages so there's not much space to elaborate on certain parts, but I wish it had been longer, as it seems to jump too quickly to the conclusion.
At the end of the story there's tasters of other books which is great of course, but I'd have appreciated the current story to take up more of that that space, I'd just got to know the characters and what was happening in there courtship to then end up at the epilogue.
I was left Wondering what the heck happened at the St Patrick's day opening.. the brunch...

This review is my honest thoughts and I thank netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read the book.
