Okay, this latest instalment of Amelia Fang may not be as adventurous as the last ones, but the theme of family in this one is STRONG - and it gets me right in the feels! Amelia is going to be a big sister, and amongst the hustle of a new baby being on the way, she is enlisted by Aunt Lavitora to look after three VERY ADORABLE but VERY NAUGHTY caticorns. BUT THEY’RE SO CUTE!!
This has to be the funniest Amelia Fang story yet and the caticorns just add so much to this world, I want all the Caticorn merch now. I want stuffed teddies of them. THEY’RE SO CUTE!! They also make Amelia’s and her friends’ lives HELL, but it’s all training for when Amelia becomes a big sister.
We are so deep in the series now that I feel so proud of Amelia and her growth and how she handles the situations presented to her. The last chapter is a tear-jerker, it’s gonna bust your heart open, that’s for sure. Ugh, now I have to wait for the next one. BOO!!! (However there is the World Book Day novella that I am going to dive into right now, but after that, the next full-length adventure is coming in October. CAN’T WAIT!)
Amelia is going to be a big sister! And while her parents are busy with the upcoming new arrival, she has been tasked with looking after her Aunt's three caticorns, Gerrard, Butler and Mo. Shes determined to show everyone what a good big sister she's going to be, but these caticorns aren't going to make it easy!
This was perhaps the most family centric book in the series so far, and also one of my favourites. It's got a distinct theme of love, patience and acceptance running through it, and I just really enjoyed seeing Amelia back in her home with these utterly adorable caticorns creating chaos. Throughout the story, Amelia is desperate to prove herself, worrying that she's just not good enough, and her little pep talks with Woo the family butler really provide a lot of important life lessons for children about doing your best, and being loved. It never feels overly done, but rather a natural progression of the story.
I also still really love all of the characters who have all grown and developed over the course of the series. Tangine, in all his glittery self absorbed, high maintence denial, Pumpy and his six pack, Florence and Grimaldi - total opposites yet so close and of course Amelia and Squashy. They're such an eclectic group, but gel well together. The secondary characters are also well fleshed out, from recurring unicorns Ricky and Graham to Aunt Lavitora and even John the vulture (who's three eyes never seem to be pointing the same way).
Fun and adorable with a strong moral message and delightful characters.
A new Amelia Fang book, this time no adventures but new family and kittens with horns.
After skipping one book (because I am sooo not a fan of screaming and shouting Florence and other yetis (which is sad as I normally love yetis)) I am back again with Amelia Fang. This is the book in which she gets a baby sibling which I already knew about since I read the Worldbookday book some time ago.
I do have to say I miss the adventures in this one. I am looking forward to each Amelia Fang book and then especially the adventures she will have. Sadly, in this one with the exception of the OMG what is happening around the ending, it was actually very tame and fluffy.
It mostly focused on Amelia Fang's parents and her mom's pregnancy, Amelia wants to be the best big sister she can be and she gets a chance to show off that when her aunt pops by (I wasn't a big fan of her aunt as it was all ME ME ME/I I I) and drops off three adorable caticorns. Oh poor Amelia. She thought it would be easy to care for these cats because they are adorable... oh boy. I had quite a laugh at the chaos the little ones spread throughout Amelia's house, that trio is naughty 9001%. I felt for poor Amelia as she just wants to be kind and nice and catsit those cuties and all she gets back is chaos, a dirty house, and something precious lost. At times I just wanted to hug her and tell her she was doing a fine job. That everything would be fine.
I wasn't always a fan of the caticorns and while we get a sobstory on why they were acting like this later and I did warm up, I still was annoyed greatly at the antics of this trio. Especially as Amelia wasn't her aunt and actually listened to them and treated them kindly.
I have to say the two best parts of the book are when Amelia meets her baby sibling and that part before Amelia's aunt + parents come back and the caticorns have run away. Especially that last part was amazing and had a lot of fun action in it.
The art was really fun and adorable.
I can't wait for the next story in this series though I do hope there is plenty of action and magical adventures again. *crosses fingers*
I'm continuing my catch up of the Amelia Fang series by reading the sixth installment. I love all of the books, but this one has now taken the top spot as my favourite Amelia Fang story. Amelia made me love her even more in this book and I didn't think that was possible!
In this adventure Amelia's parents are preparing for the imminent arrival of Amelia's little brother or sister. Just at the moment when they need to head to Nocturnia's hospital, Amelia's aunt arrives with her three caticorns. She's needs someone to look after them while she is away for the night. Amelia sees this as a perfect opportunity to show her parents what a wonderful, responsible big sister she can be and offers to babysit the little creatures. However, once she is left alone, with only her friends Florence, Grimaldi and Tangine for support, the caticorns start being really naughty! Amelia begins to have doubts about her ability to be a big sister, what if she's not responsible enough, what if the new baby doesn't like her?
I really felt for Amelia and the emotional journey she went on over the course of this book. Her friends were wonderful and supportive as always full of helpful advice and eager to join in.
This would be a perfect book to read with children who are preparing for the arrival of a new sibling.
Brilliant. My six year old and I loved this book - it’s funny, imaginative and fun.
She could read it herself, but some of the language used is slightly difficult for independent reading at her age and I think she probably got more out of it with me reading it to her. The use of language is particularly innovative (the ‘unloving room,’ having ‘daymares,’ be back by ‘moonset).
Would imagine it would be find for independent reading age 8+.
Especially recommended if like us you have a new baby in the house. My daughter loved that Amelia was like her and Amelia’s emotions and reactions really resonated with her. :)
This is my second Amelia Fang book. I skipped books 2-5. This doesn’t interfere with reading experience at all. These are independent stories.
In this book Amelia’s parents have to go to infirmary because Amelia is going to have a baby sibling. Meanwhile Amelia babysits her aunt Lavitora’s caticorns. Amelia is very eager to become a good big sister. And now she has a change to prove it. She and her friends just have to look after these cute little caticorns. Too bad that after five minutes their wards are on a rampage.
This is a cute and grim story with lots of funny details. There are disgusting foods like Unlucky arms-cereal and Foot fudge. Illustrations are fun.
Another one read to Tiny (8/9yo) at bedtimes. Picked up a lot in the second half after a very slow start. Even as someone who loves a good pun, I found the sheer volume of names of ordinary things being changed to undead versions (eg the unliving room) was too much and slowed down the narrative as I had to mentally convert everything as I went, as well as making it trickier to read out loud. Sometimes less is more.
Once the story gets going, it's quite sweet.
Tiny was a bit more enthusiastic than me, and it's her that it's aimed at, so a bonus star for that. I think I'll let her read any more of them herself.
Amelia Fang is an excellent book for all ages full of laughter, sadness, emotion and friendship. With fang-tastic names her mum and dad call her and spectacular characters. Amelia is a little vampire with friends called Florence (a rare breed of yeti not to be confused with a beast) Grimaldi (death himself) and Tangine (the future king of Nocturnia). Written by Laura Ellen Anderson. Fang-ulus I say! Bryony
As with all the books/audiobooks this was very cute though the emphasis here switches from wacky adventures to Amelia coming to understand her new role as a big sister. She also has a trio of caticorns to look after.
Given that these books are intended for children, having Amelia’s focus upon preparing for a new sibling is quite educational.
There are the usual puns and delightful silliness including the illustrations.
"Meidän perheemme on aika outo. -- Mutta sinä taidat sopia hyvin joukkoon." (s. 208)
Great fun with a load of brilliant messages about Amelia becoming a big sister. The caticorns get up to some sheer nonsense and all Amelia wants to do is a good job looking after them. The illustrations, as always, are gorgeous!
I loved this book it was a very fun mix of responsibility, monsters and acknowledging others. It has a really fun story and the caticorns are incredibly cute. I found the endearments that were being thrown around a little nauseating and difficult to read but it was a great book and a lovely growth of Amelia. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. This one really has a way of drawing you in and keeping you invested whilst remaining light hearted and fun.
Another adorable Amelia Fang! Who can go wrong with Caticorns? Well, I suppose Anelia can, after all, it’d be pretty boring if there wasn’t some mischief involved! Absolutely adorable and a very pleasant read!
A very sweet story where Amelia prepares to be a big sister. It's an emotional one, and the baby is so cute! I think the adults will laugh more at all the pun names and references (the caticorns' names, the designer... lol).
Another fun adventure with Amelia and her friends as Amelia learns that she just has to be herself and others will love her as she is. And the caticorns are so cute and fluffy and adorable! Wonderful iilustrations as always.
I just love this whole series. These characters are just so lovely and their closeness just makes me happy. The illustrations are just stunning and I don't ever want this series to end.
