About the author

Laurel Anne Hill

17 books108 followers
Laurel Anne Hill—author and former underground storage tank operator—grew up in San Francisco with more dreams of adventure than good sense or money. Her close brushes with death, love of family, respect for honor and belief in a higher power continue to influence her writing and her life. She has authored two award-winning novels, most recently, THE ENGINE WOMAN’S LIGHT. This book, the recipient of thirteen honors and awards, relates the spirits-meet-steampunk, coming-of-age heroic journey of a young Latina in an alternate 19th Century California. Laurel’s published short stories total over thirty. She has served internationally as a program participant at many science fiction/fantasy conventions. She’s the Literary Stage Manager for the annual San Mateo County Fair in California, a speaker, writing contest judge, and anthology editor. And she’s even engineered a steam locomotive. This fiercely-curated, expertly-edited anthology gathers mind-bending poetry, stories that will make you laugh, cry, and shake your fist at the universe, intertwined with real-life adventures that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Read them all in one go, or savor them one at a time.

Not to be missed.

Among my favorites (and don't take this to mean don't read the rest, I'm just trying to get your attention here!):

"To Be a Woman," by Sheena Arora (Catch her at a reading and then catch your breath when she says "oh, yes, and this really happened to me.")

"A Rock is a Fragile Being" by Bradley Hoge (Can geology bring tears to your eyes? You bet it can.)

"Super Holly Hansson in: The God Glove" by Dave M. Strom (This wild send-up of the Marvel universe's approach to wrecking the timelines will expunge a lot of your angst from the real Stump-Finger's reign and remind you what the world really needs.)

(Full disclosure: I am one of the contributors to this anthology. Skip my stories if you must, but read the rest or you will regret leaving this off your list.)

Fun collection of stories contributed by the members of the California Writers Club San Francisco and Peninsula. My contribution is Missouri Boys: The War Years. A friendship tested by the Civil War era.
This collection won a gold award from the Independent Press Award 2022.
