Okay, honestly, I don't get the rating on this book at all. For me, Zmija was a wonderful and most interesting read. I am always amazed by the depth of Sapkowski's knowledge in different fields, as in this book it was knowledge about military, weapons and war overall, plus knowledge about Russians and their mentality, history etc..in addition, thanks to the plot being set in various eras of the history of mankind, Sapkowski also shows us great knowledge about the times of Alexander The Great and Queen Victoria of England. Oh my God, I mean, this book is a huge history information source and for me, who knows little of these things, it was an amazing read. Why doesn't anyone like it better than three stars? Is it because of the nature of the book, set in our world, our reality, but with fantasy elements in it? Well, I loved this part, too. I've never read anything like this, so it was a whole new reading experience for me. The idea that there really exists something fantastical and paranormal on this planet is intensified so much by the ongoing Soviet-Afghan war in the background. The war pictures reality in its rawness, the very core of human beings as they are. Humans forced to fight and kill each other in the name of their nation and the ideology, in which they don't even believe anymore.
I just find the book amazing. From what I understood from the other reviews, a lot of people said that compared to Sapek's other books, this one is just not as good. I think you can't really compare them, since it's totally different genres. This book crosses fantasy, military and history fiction. It's a unique book and I took great pleasure in reading it, just as always when it comes to Sapkowski's works:)
