The only 100% legitimate and authorized official totally real, physical, not-holographic, you can touch it, actual certified 'Studio Fresh' (tm) collection of Owen Cyclops comics. This volume spans from the first nascent doodle comics all the way into full blown multiple page graphic tales. Watch the metamorphosis from "weird guy" to "weird guy who makes comics" unfold right before your eyes via cutting edge breathtaking two dimensional printing technology (no 3D glasses required).
If you're familiar with Owen Cyclops (this is his secretary by the way. He makes me sleep in my car in his driveway) you will enjoy knowing that this collection spans, temporally, from the Brooklyn apartment drug days all the way to "pregnant wife status". We originally wanted to call it the "Drugs to Baby" collection but this was vetoed by our publisher.
Aside from ALL the comics made during this time, there is also a bonus section with sketches and mockups, what we in the business call "cutting room floor" material, and a bonus unreleased 8 page comic called 'Quantum Soteriology'. All of this has NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE (unless you're on Owen's Patreon, and then I mean, if you are, you probably would want to own a copy anyway right). Thus for the general non-Patreon public there is at least around 35 pages of never before seen material. WOW.
DON'T fall prey to future regret. The internet seems like forever, but you're one downed power line, one nefarious organizational move, one solar flare away from TOTAL DIGITAL EVAPORATION. Aside from this, you may know the internet is decaying rapidly, like an apple left in the sun. This is the ONLY official analog non-electric comics collection. It will weather any storm (metaphorical storm, it is paper of course). ACT NOW! SEIZE THE MOMENT! DON'T WAIT! WE CAN DO ANYTHING. DO NOT EVER CONSIDER ACCEPTING DEFEAT UNDER AND CIRCUMSTANCES. THERE IS ONLY ONE THING THAT HAS EVER TRULY CHANGED THE COURSE OF HISTORY. A RADICAL AND NEW ECSTATIC VISION OF THE FUTURE. WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT IS POSSIBLE. THE TOTAL AND COMPLETE TRIUMPH OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT OVER DARKNESS IS IMMINENT. WE LITERALLY CANNOT LOSE. WHETHER OR NOT YOU BUY THIS BOOK, WE ARE BROTHERS - SHARING THIS STRANGE TIME WITH YOU IS A JOY THAT WILL REVERBERATE OUT THROUGH ETERNITY. DO NOT EVER SUCCUMB TO DESPAIR. GOD SEES ALL THINGS.
This was simply a delight to slowly read through as a treat at the end of my work days. I was sort of disappointed with the formatting of the text between sections, as though it was merely a Word printout. The author’s faith journey from chaos to the order of the Divine Logos is very encouraging and his sense of the esoteric/Fortean is simply astounding. I always felt very alone being Christian yet also very interested in lining my faith with these topics, but Owen does a fantastic job at showing the links in a simple and humble way. He points fun at postmodern culture without coming across as cruel or a bully. I look forward to supporting his art in the future. Thanks, Owen. My friend told me about you when I was trying to explain the link between Greys, machine elves, and demons. Your story and art means a lot to me. I love your religious art, it starts discussions when I wear it out or point to it in my office (I am a pastor). Peace be with you and your family.
Owen puts together a wonderful collection of original comics in his debut anthology. I loved seeing his unique approach to a wide range of topics such as substance abuse, theology, relationships, Roland Barthes, marriage, the infinitely hungry god of unchecked technological progress, and cryptids.
The book is organized haphazardly by style and theme. A few one page comics, longer narrative comics, “four pagers,” and serialized comics. I really enjoyed the organization and the introductions to each section were a treat that let me into the author’s headspace.
There are a few reasons that this book is superior to just following him on Twitter. First of all, you’re getting comics that he hasn’t posted. Second, the physical aspect of the volume really elevates the experience— the printing is crisp and his use of color really stands out on the page, much moreso than on a small phone screen. Lastly, the section intros that I mentioned in the previous paragraph were a great addition of long form writing that you won’t get just from a social media follow.
Overall, I had to give it such a high review because I always find myself engrossed by his original thoughts on such niche topics. There’s nowhere else that you’re going to get a comic that has a throwaway reference to Hegel for a laugh, earnest self-analysis, Christian themes, and an incredibly unique art style.
Fun collection, sort of a "portrait of the artist becoming an artist (literally)". Definitely some rough areas that feel like a self-published collection (especially the text pages), but the homespun aesthetic also suffuses the more polished sections with an original charm that avoids imitative kitsch. Looking forward to future, more thematically cohesive works from Mr. Cyclops, now that he's presumably released his entire artistic and personal backlog for public perusal.
A wonderful autobiography (in a sense) of the author put forth as stories in a series of comics. Even those that take place in a fictional world are telling us a little bit of the creator of the book. Owen Cyclops also has quite a similar story that I do, and for that I found myself reading my own life as well. This book is just great and enjoyable and speaks to me in a certain way that’s hard to articulate. It has even emboldened me to finally pursue my own creative arts.
I loved this book, but it is a hodge podge, sampler. Even the form isn't consistent. Really looking forward to his next volume which will no doubt be more of one piece. That said, this is great. He shows great promise. And I love the side helping of the super super weird.
