I had the fortune of getting an early copy of this book from one of the authors, who I consider a mentor of sorts. So yes, is this biased? Probably, but I'll try and be objective.
As someone who works in the Social Impact space, I often get requests on what made me quit the corporate rat-race to pursue purpose. And it's really hard to condense the answer into a few minutes. What I might do now instead is recommend this book to them.
This book has years of wisdom from folks that have walked their talk, and really committed themselves to change. It serves as a good guide to lifting apparent barriers to the social impact space - it's not as hard as you imagine, and even if you don't make great money, you might be significantly more fulfilled. This book breaks it down, step by step, in well-researched chapters that are engaging for the most part. And it's honest, balancing the ideal with the real. The inner-journey chapter really stood out for me.
Initially, I thought the fictional characters of Kim and Farah were cringe-y, but they grow on you real quick, and ask great questions, some that I know even I've asked the authors.
If you're looking to pursue purpose, this is a quick, holistic read that will set you on the path.
It's a quick-ish read which is always a nice bonus, and I know that I will genuinely be recommending it to folks who are looking to change their careers for the greater good.

Thinking about how to change the world and finding ways to work towards that goal are often painfully difficult. Even with the best career advisors, too many people struggle to find timely pointers for a career that merges their desire to make social impact, and the opportunities currently available in the world of work. Out of their work with Amani Institute (and before) comes a book that tells you how to do just that by Roshan Paul and Ilaina Rabatt. Written with experiences from regions of the world where people of Global Majority live (also known as the Rest of the World), this book will become a companion for the next generation of social changemakers who are beginning and transitioning into careers for a world that has changed a great deal over the last two decades. It is worth buying for someone special in your life.

The New Reason to Work is a must read for anyone looking to understand what the future of work is shaping up to be: be it in the impact space or generally in careers today. Roshan and Ilaina draw on their immense learnings growing social entrepreneurship around the world to propose a new future of work, where impact, creativity, and holistic focuses take priority over traditional focuses like status and money.

Easy and informative read wherever you are in your journey
This is a wonderfully easy and enjoyable read taking you through the minefield of impact careers. If you're new to this world, this book gives a great introduction on your options. If you're already in it, it provides a useful reminder of options you perhaps decided not to take in the beginning, but which may be more relevant now. If you want a career that matters, this book is a great place to start.
