Supporting Trans People of Colour

Rate this book
Providing an accessible and authoritative introduction to issues around People of Colour (POC) trans inclusion, this book uses case studies, tips, checklists and anonymous survey results to set out best practice for any professionals working with trans people to create safer spaces, support and awareness.

Trans people of colour are often excluded because gender and race are treated as separate issues. They are therefore left out from movements and services and in trans and non-binary spaces, their POC identities are overlooked. Choudrey's guide introduces the theory of intersectionality from the start, giving practical tips and steps to ensure that the community as a whole may be represented and creates a safer space for trans people of colour to thrive.

An empowering and self-preserving tool, Supporting Trans People of Colour is an invaluable resource for therapists, counsellors, healthcare professionals, and those working in education and charities, as well as those wanting to make their approach and service more inclusive.

Supporting Trans People of Colour by Sabah Choudrey is a transformative and evocative book that is an absolute must-read for both cisgender and transgender white people. Of course, it's never been more essential for cis allies to get real about supporting tpoc, but white people in the trans community have been failing to adequately support our Black and brown siblings for as long as we've been a community and we desperately need to address it.

One of the things I really appreciated about this book was the "reflect on" sections, which encourage readers to critically engage with our own behaviour, how biases might manifest, how we may end up burdening our friends of colour with our process of unlearning. The last one struck me particularly keenly and one of the things Sabah suggests is to do this work with other white people, privately, without making a huge "thing" of it. There were a lot of lessons in this book but that's the one that resonated with me and is the main take away that I know I need to address in my own life. I really do think every white trans person needs to read this book - its incredibly accessible and less than 200 pages long!

I got this book as I want to do better by TPOC clients, and am conscious of gaps in my knowledge and experience. This book strikes a good balance between being easy to read, and also including detail from being being well researched and referenced. The tone is welcoming but also firm, setting out the work that needs to be done by those who face the least oppression. The focus of the book is on how professionals, group coordinators and events organisers (and others) can be inclusive to trans people of colour, but the content is also a good primer around inclusivity in general, particularly regarding race. There are quotes from the author’s survey of TPOC but the book isn’t really focused on individual stories and experiences - I would have liked more of that but that isn’t the aim of the book. The final chapters really bring the book together with some examples of inclusivity in action - I would have liked more examples to illustrate but maybe there just aren’t many yet to comment on? I hope this book can be extended in the future.

Incredibly informative with Choudrey pushing many voices forward to be heard. No one book should be your only guide to racial and gender based discussions but this one should be right at the top of your stack!

A really useful book for reflecting on how we can make spaces and organisations truly inclusive of trans people of colour. Very accessible and well researched.
I really encourage other white people to read this, regardless of profession. All spaces and fields should be inclusive of TPOC.

Truly accessible and invaluable as a resource to all humans in or outside of the workplace. Should be required reading for any organisation who say that they practice inclusion.
