Charlie Saxe grew up in the seedy underbelly of Umbra before she was adopted and allowed to live in the palace. Since then, she has been training for years to be able to infiltrate an Equivalent high school, a task she needs to succeed at in order to make her adoptive father proud. Everyone in her world knows about the existence of the parallel universe Equivalent, but only trained soldiers are allowed to go there. After all her hard work, she refuses to let anything get in her way, including the inappropriate crush she happens to have on her target, Kav Kavanaugh.
However, when the only thing she can do to keep him safe is illegally sneak him into her world, Charlie is forced to put her personal needs aside. Counterpart is run by a monarchy, and she and Kav must help her King uncover a mole within the palace before Kav can return home. As the two of them grow closer, Charlie makes contact with the boy she left behind in Umbra, and discovers a conspiracy theory against the king that could change everything she thought she knew and believed in.

Umm...GUYS?! I LOVED this book. Like...A LOT. This is my second read from Chani Lynn Feener. I read Amid Stars and Darkness last year and had such a fun time. I knew I wanted to read more from her, so I picked this one up as it's her newest release (it comes out on February 27th), and I flew through it in a day and a half. We're in an alternate reality that's connected to Earth. One side is normal life, the other is a scifi world with a monarchy. The main characters are a boy from Earth who's important to the other world and the girl who is sent out to protect him. Wow, did this get crazy. That reveal at the end? Absolutely blew me away. Like...HOW DID I NOT PREDICT IT? Feener absolutely blew me off the trail with some other reveal, and I applaud her for that. Just such an absolute blast to read and totally worth the money and time. I will be anxiously waiting the next one!
Wow what a wild ride. Easily one of my favorite YA books. Think six of Crows meets Alice in Wonderland. Let me lay it for you:
- A Parallel Universe - Swoon Worthy characters - Twists and Turns that totally took me by surprise. - Fast paced - Take charge female lead - That cover though
First of all, the cover art for this book is INCREDIBLE! Alright so this book was something SO different for me, 90% of my books contain either faeries or something of the sort which this book didn’t. It is a sci-fi/fantasy book about two planets which basically mirror eachother.
Charlie Saxe is the lead in this story, she has had a very difficult childhood on the streets but managed to get away and start a new life as the bodyguard and friend of the crown princess. She is also a bad ass black spade, which means she is like an undercover agent in her world.
What I love about this book is how unique the worldbuilding is, but also how complicated Charlie is. She is struggling with her past, herself and romances all while trying to prove herself to everyone around her and fixing everything that happens as a result of a catastrophic mission. She is strong, determined, brave and daring. Her adventure starts when she is send on a mission to the mirroring planet, and said mission goes completely off the rails.
The story telling really captivated me, even though the worldbuilding at the beginning was a bit confusing to me at the start. Once I got the gist of things the story got sooo addictive! I would definitely recommend you to read❣️
This is a unique and fascinating YA sci-fi/fantasy novel. The story follows Charlie Saxe, who is responsible for the safety of Riley 'Kav' Kavanaugh. When plans go awry, Charlie is forced to illegally bring Kav from his world (Equivalent - essentially Earth) to her mirrored world (Counterpart - similar to Earth, but with a strict monarchy and advanced technology).
Charlie's character development is at the forefront throughout the story as she wrestles with threats to the royal family, not knowing who to trust, and a variety of other plot twists. There are a lot of great characters in the story, and many are written in such a way that I kept changing my mind about who I think the 'bad guy' is. There is a low-key love triangle involved, which I hope is explored more in the next book (mainly because I'm hoping the triangle tips in the secondary love interest's favor 😉).
There are a few spelling/grammatical errors (e.g., rated vs. ratted, a misplaced word in a sentence, etc.), but those are easy to overlook while reading through this fun and fast-paced story.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Across From You is a fast-paced, political intrigue adventure that merges two parallel worlds; our world and Charlie's world.
I read this book late into the night... or early morning... however you want to look at it. We won't discuss how little sleep I am currently running on. I really loved this book and grew attached to all of the characters pretty immediately. Charlie was an incredibly likable heroine (which is a high compliment from me) and the boys; my gracious. Ace and Kav both had my heart in different ways. But I do have to say, I was #teamAce from the very beginning, so I desperately need book two after that ending!
A well-done cliffhanger. An incredible plot twist that actually worked in throwing me off the trail. A love triangle that made sense. And an ending that was so "bomb"; my goodness, I almost have chills at how epic that was. I am here for this whole series and I'm kind of sad that this book was only just released because that means the next book is too far away. An easy 5 stars from me!
Content: Cursing is mild but often present| Sexual content is limited to some semi-detailed makeout scenes, but they never get inappropriate for YA readers | Gore is mild and almost nonexistent | LGBTQ+ character (s?) present in an obvious way (via comments and looks) though it is never actually said | Drug use: mentioned in conversation | Alcohol use: mentioned and some characters do visit a bar
I received this book from the author for free. All comments and opinions are entirely my own and this review is voluntary.
Another great book and how gorgeous is this cover! I was really intrigued by the parallel world aspect of the novel and was glad to see it featured quite early on in the storyline. However, I guess that aspect of the world building got lost once they were back into their Counterpart world and hopefully it will be an important feature again in the next books. Its another love triangle situation (love)!! I loved Ace's character and wasnt that fussed about Kav. Charlie's character is quite complex which is understandable base on her background, upbringing and what we find out about her. She is a little bit too on the naive side though, which is surprising considering how she grew up. There is a lot of character building for Charlie throughout this book which got a little repetitive, but I loved how the ending turned out and can not wait for the next one. Chani Lynn Feener's books are always such a great time. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A fantasy YA novel set in a universe with a parallel worlds - Counterpart and Equivalent. The story follows Charlie, an orphan from Counterpart, who was adopted and trained as a spy and her mission of protecting Kav.
Kav is an orphaned high school student in Equivalent - similar to the world we know. When a gun fight breaks out and he's pulled into another world, everything he knows is changed. He learns he's not just a high schooler, but the equivalent's version of the royal heir.
A wonderful world building book, with descriptions that don't bore you as being drawn out. The difference between the high society and forgotten, poorer neighbourhoods reflects well and the symbolism throughout is good but not heavy-handed and makes you want to roll your eyes.
The love story is cute and realistic, and built up in a way that makes you root for them. The ending is amazing, well written and builds tension in a "can't put it down must know more" way. A worthwhile read for anyone who enjoys fantasy YA.
Few minor spelling mistakes (sweet instead of sweat) but overall incredibly fun to read. I wish there was a little more lead up to jumping back to Counterpart, see and get a better feel for the team dynamics while on the mission before everything went awry.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it was a fun concept and I enjoyed going on this journey. The characters were well done and I enjoyed getting to know them.

Across from you is a fast-paced fantasy adventure with some romance sprinkled in. The romance really picks up half-way through.
The writing is amazing, there are ZERO dull points, the characters are interesting and it's one hundred percent not only my favorite book of 2022 so far, but also of all time. Seriously, I can't think of a single negative. Bravo to the author! I'll definitely be purchasing a physical paperback copy of this.
I can't wait for the second book and absolutely look forward to reading this author's other titles!

This book really surprised me! The cover was what initially drew me to this book, and the synopsis sealed it for me.
A small take on Alice in Wonderland themes but a whole expanse of new ideas, this book was a ride from beginning to end and I'm really looking forward to seeing where it goes next!
Charlie is a Spade, tasked with watching over Equivalent's (the other world) version of Counterpart's (her world) Princess. Riley 'Kav' Kavanaugh. All hell inevitably breaks loose and suddenly they're mixed up in a whole other plot against Counterparts Royal family - with Kav in tow.
It was a very unique story, the idea of two universes sitting so closely and yet being so different in nature, and after my initial confusion in the beginning (which really could have been put down to exhaustion on my part 😂) I really enjoyed the worlds she'd woven.
The plot was fast paced, new mysteries uncovered along the way.
The characters were fun and believable, though I do wish we'd seen more of Riley - I did feel as though she was sidelined quite a bit despite being Charlie's best friend and almost sister, but that was the only real issue I had!
If you like a little bit of sci-fi / fantasy and a whole lot of adrenaline fueled mystery, this one could definitely be up your street!
Plot: This YA start to the 'Two World' series is a science fiction & fantasy mix focused on two parallel worlds - Counterpart and Equivalent. One with a monarchy and one without, the mirroring of the two worlds leads to some interesting similarities and differences which are explored throughout.
This plot description isn't fully spoiler-filled but just in case:
Characters: The characters in this book are incredibly likeable, and you are absolutely rooting for each of them. They each have their own motivations and ambitions, and distinct personalities that are actually fun to read. I loved the dynamic between the characters, and cannot wait to see more of them in the next book. Characters who like each other, distrust between others - all really well written.
Pacing: This book was incredibly fast-paced, and I read it with lightning speed. It is a genuinely interesting book that keeps the action moving throughout, with no scene feeling out of place.
Overall thoughts: This was a strong 5 star review for me. From pacing to likeable characters, I will absolutely be continuing the series and can't wait for the next one!
Note: there were a tiny number of grammatical errors which ordinarily would have been picked up during editing - these are very easy to skim past and do not detract from the writing which is really strong and engaging. I believe this book is self-published, which is incredibly impressive and something I really admire, so I don't judge that particular oversight too harshly because the writing is BEAUTIFUL. Even with this tiny issue I couldn't bring myself to dock it in any way because the storyline and writing was so strong.

In this story, we follow Charlie and her team as they try to protect the parallel universe version of the the heir of their world. But when things go awry, Charlie must bring her target into her world, despite the consequences.
I love the cover art for this! It immediately immerses readers into this parallel world scenario. When I started reading, it seemed almost as if it would turn into an Alice in Wonderland retelling with the Hearts and Spades, and even the seedy area of Counterpart being Cheshire. And it kinda was with Kav entering another world, just through a wall rather than a rabbit hole or looking glass. There were other similarities to the story, but those are best left for readers to find.
The parallel universe idea was so cool. The worlds are called Equivalent and Counterpart, and each person has a counterpart in the other world. this leads to mainly gender neutral names, since in one world someone would be female and in the other, male. It was interesting to see how the two worlds differed both technologically and politically.
Each character was unique and had a place in the story. There were several moments when I thought I knew everything about a character, only for there to be a reveal I wasn't expecting. There was one particular one I guessed correctly, but all the others were a shock to me.
With how this ends, I do need the next one. And soon!
Disclaimer: I received a review copy through BookSirens.
This book absolutely blew me away! First of all, I fell in love with the characters, which made me enjoy the book so much more! I felt as though their reactions to different situations were very close to how a real person would react, and dialogue was very close to how everyday people would speak, which I rarely find in a book. Additionally, I loved the plot twists, and, while I had suspicions, I was never able to fully guess what would happen next. I also love when books present a world that coexists with the real world, but is simply kept hidden, (such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, etc.) and that type of world building was executed wonderfully in this book. The only thing I would have liked to see in this book was a bit more diversity in the races of characters, but other than that, I enjoyed the book and cannot wait for the release of the rest of the series!

I think words to describe how I feel after reading this story. First off, I LOVE KAV, I need more of him. I was intensely caught up in what I felt like was a love triangle between Charlie, Ace and Kav. Tbh I didn’t know what was going on or who to believe half the time! There were so many little twists going on, and there’s still so much left unanswered that I need to know! This cannot be the end, I refuse to believe it. There’s too many loose ends!! As soon as I picked this book up I was hooked. I need book two asap, like yesterday plz and thank you. I got this ARC sent to me by @booksirens and let me tell you, it’s 1AM, I just finished it, and I’m going to purchase my paperback copy right now! @tempestchani please put me out of my misery and give me book two now 🥲
I loved this book my only regret is having to wait for a sequel to come out! The main heroine Charlie is a tough kick but member of the king's special forces but she still is very relatable. I loved that it switched between her point of view and Kav because their inner dialogues add so much to the narrative. This teen fantasy has a dash of Alice in Wonderland influence but it a wholly original story. If you love Tamora Pierce then you need to check out Chani Lynn Feener's world building in this modern fantasy. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Okay, I am a fan! The cover called to me, it's beautiful. But the story was even better than expected. It was quick to get into, the plot was really interesting, and the characters are easy to connect with. I feel like I understand Charlie and Kav, especially with the dual perspective. Plus it gives the reader insight to their way of thinking coming from different worlds. And Ace, oh I am so excited for more Ace. I'll definitely be picking up the next book. I cannot wait for the continuation of this story.

The storyline of this YA fantasy is well written. There is a nice blending of fantasy and sci- fi with bits of intrigue and sweet romance. The story is mainly told from the main characters POV with some dual POV from the love interest. Definitely looking forward to the next book.

I loved this book, like I finished it almost a week ago, and immediately wanted the second book so I know what happens! I want to have this in physical and ebook format loved it.
I loved the concept and execution of the book, it read very well and had some twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. The two worlds were fascinating and I loved the characters. Charlie and Kav's dual perspectives were really helpful in understanding the differences, as each of them were experiencing the two worlds for the first time. I want to see what happens next for the characters.
This is my first Chani Lynn Feener book, but it certainly will not be the last!

It was amazing. I strongly recommend this masterpiece. Cruel prince meets Alice in wonderland with setting of steampunk world. Love triangle is wonderful, I cannot chose the team till the very end ( team Ace now). The plot twists were great and the humour was just the icing on the cake. Easy one of my fav ya fantasy books.
This is my second of Chani Lynn Feener and now she has become my fav! Devored this book in a single read! I can write thousand words to praise this book, but they won't be enough… so I will just say:- "READ THIS BOOK!!"

Wow, this book Full of the right ingredients : two parallels worlds, lots of action, a mystery to be resolved and a bit of romance, what much you could ask for? All of the characters are well written and all of then have their own background and story and it's super interesting seeing how they are connected to each other. I wish I could see more of Riley and Ace, I hope that happens next 😊😊😊 I must say that I wasn't ready for that final, because I thought of one person that could be the heir but then it turns out to be another, but it didn't make any sense 🤯🤯 but then I was right 😅😅😅 Can't wait to know more about these characters.
✑ First of all, the cover of this book is so pretty!
✑ Sci-fi meets fantasy. Think alternate universe, multidimensional. You've got the counterpart and the equivalent. What exist in counterpart also exist in equivalent but opposite. I have to admit that I was a little confuse with the world building at the beginning but it was explained later on. Once I got the gist of it, I was hooked.
✑ I love Charlie's character. She's strong, determined and daring. She's also a total badass even before being a black spade. Charlie is a complicated character that struggles with her past and the romance in her life all while trying to prove herself to everyone. Her adventure starts after being assigned at equivalent to protect Riley "Kav" Kavanaugh and the mission somehow went off the rails. Just when I thought I saw what was coming, the book threw me a curve ball. I DID NOT SEE THAT ENDING COMING! Wow, so what happens next?
✑ PS. I honestly was Team Ace from the beginning. I'm hoping there's still a chance for my ship to sail on the second book? I mean Kav is nice and all but Ace….

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Across From You
Across From You is the first book in the Two Worlds series by Chani Lynn Feener. As the series title suggests, there are two worlds, Counterpart, and Equivalent. Charlie Saxe is one of the story's protagonists. Charlie was born on Counterpart. Charlie survived in the slums of Umbra with the aid of her friend Ace. Charlie's life turns around when she saves princess Riley. Elijah adopts Charlie, but his expectations for her are lofty due to his position. Elijah is the leader of the Black Spades. This general directs the soldiers and spies that make up the organization. When Charlie is adopted, she begins training as a Black Spade while growing her relationship with Riley and sending letters to Ace. Charlie is assigned a mission in Equivalent; Charlie and her team must protect Riley's equivalent Kav. Charlie's team and the reader are being kept in the dark regarding why it is essential to watch over Kav. All we know is that someone is trying to get Kav killed, so Charlie and her crew begin to watch over Kav in Equivalent. Charlie was ordered not to contact Kav. Gray, one of Charlie's subordinates, developed a bond with Kav while Charlie watched them from afar. It is not long before everything falls apart. The group after Kav, the Red Hearts, mobilizes and attempts to murder him in public. There was an informant to the Red Hearts within the group who set Charlie's team up, thinking quickly Charlie decides to take Kav to Counterpart. That is a summary of the first few chapters; the review going forward will contain significant spoilers and my humble opinion.
This book has so much potential that the author did not fulfill. Still, the story's ending hooked me enough to be excited for the continuation of the series. The main issue with the account is how long it takes to pick up. The climax happens in the last two chapters; everything before the conclusion is fluff. There is no problem with some fluff and some action, but this book manages to lack in both areas. The reader gets a scene of Charlie and Riley before Charlie embarks on her journey to Equivalent. This chapter is a waste, considering how often points in that chapter are brought up again throughout the book. Across From You constantly restates information the reader already knows. The redundancy of this action leads to chapters dragging for longer than they should. After the first chapter, there is a time skip.
Charlie has been on Equivalent for some time and has developed a crush on Kav. This attraction was never developed or explained, and there were no scenes of Charlie and Kav to establish the infatuation. It just comes out of nowhere. Charlie is under a lot of pressure because she messed up on her last mission. Charlie was meant to protect her subordinate Minor's Equivalent on that mission, but she died somehow. This plot point is not developed; it is added to create tension between Charlie and Minor and Charlie and the higher-ups. I mention this to say that, with all the pressure Charlie is under, it does not make sense for her to get a crush on Kav when all she has done is watch him. That is not to say that this can't happen, but it needs to be developed through interactions so the reader understands and does not get whiplash. The romance is thrust upon you at the start, leading to confusion. Was there something the reader missed because of the time skip, or was Charlie smitten from just looking at him? This all could have been explained via a few scenes between them.
The main components of this book are the romance between Kav and Charlie and the possible assassination of the previous King by the current King. The romance takes up most of the book because Charlie is kept in the dark due to her refusal to doubt the people who took her in. Ace and Minor allude to the previous King's death being deliberate, and even when the truth is staring her directly in the face, she cannot accept it. The last King is dead, but his son, who would be the true heir, is rumored to be alive. As soon as we were introduced to Ace, I knew he was the true heir. Ace despised the royal family for unknown reasons. While he became the King of Umbra's underworld, he knew his way around the capitol. Charlie is meant to b smart, but even with all this information, it takes her until the last chapter to realize he is the heir; she does not figure it out on her own. Instead, there is a grand reveal at a trial. There is a misdirection with the nanny of the crown prince, who claims that the crown prince is alive. The crown prince, according to her, is Minor. The Red Hearts aims to uproot the false heir, the false King, and reveal the assassination plot. The Black Spades apprehend Minor and the nanny. The King and Elijah hold a trial to prove that Minor is not the true heir in hopes of discrediting them and quieting the rumor and unrest caused by the Red Hearts. Minor being the true heir makes no sense, the King has seen Minor before, and I doubt he would not notice his nephew, let alone let him stay alive when he intended to kill him. Minor being the heir was an unnecessary plot point that adds nothing to the story. Minor should have betrayed the Black Spades for a different reason. The reason we were given does not add up.
Across from You is a chore to read for most of the book, but I enjoyed the ending quite a bit. I hope the author improves the character dialogue and expands on the relationship between Ace and Charlie. I do not care for Kav and Charlie's relationship. The romantic moments between them were stale and poorly described, but I am confident that the sequel will improve on all the falters of Across from You.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
When a routine surveillance mission goes wrong and the mark is brought back to her world, Black Spade, Charlie Saxe’s life is thrown into turmoil. She has always had to prove herself to the council and her adoptive Father the leader of the royal security guard in Counterpart and now she has not only her life on the line. As circumstances around her become tense and those whom she can trust become few, she has to balance her duty to Umbra against her loyalty to the royal household and her childhood friend.
Kav has been pulled out of his cushy high school life and thrown into the political drama of another dimension. Things are different but at least now he can come to know the girl he has had a crush on for the last couple of months. Plus, he is having the adventure of a lifetime.
Ace, the King of the Underworld grew up with Charlie, or as he calls her Little Lie. When she comes to him seeking safety he cannot help pulling her into his life again. He promises to help her, but accepting his help could put her in jail.
As Charlie has to make sense of the betrayal and lies she must discover the truth and decide where her loyalty lies as well as where her heart is heading. It cannot be good.

It took me some time to get into the story. I think I was at about 20% of the book before I really understood what was going on. I was a bit lost at the beginning and did not understand entirely how the world was working and who the characters were. There was no real character development until some time, which made it difficult to enter the story. The novel tells the story of two mirror worlds existing in parallel and in which everyone has a double. Here the hero, Charlie, is tasked with protecting the double in the parallel world. There is a plot involving the crown and she gets quickly involved.
There were references to Alice in Wonderland without the story being a rewriting of the classic tale.
I liked the story quite well and I am rating it higher than my actual appreciation of it as I feel that there is great potential in the worlds described. I won't go any higher because of the predictability of the plot though but it was enjoyable.
I'm expecting a lot for the next volume!

This was a difficult read, solely because of the endless typos. Was this actually edited??? The author's note suggests so, but it could certainly use an intensive line edit for typos/grammatical errors/etc.
I actually liked the story, but the typo count got so ridiculous (I have about 70 notes/highlights and most are for typos, and I didn't even highlight all the errors I found) that I had to take two stars off for it.
Anyway ... the story itself is intriguing, a tale of parallel worlds, political intrigue, a potential love triangle (sigh ... can it be a reverse harem instead, please?), and a constant guessing game as to who is who and who is a traitor and whose lifelong held beliefs are based on something that's a total lie.
I really do want to read on and find out what happens next, so I'll just have to hope the next book has way less typos ... and I'll still be taking a break between reads so I can get up my energy stores again, because wading through constant typos always takes it out of me.
