Blood and Fire

Rate this book
I am Maia Delacroix and I hunt people and relics. My life does not lack excitement or danger. I have it in spades.

Then the Mageri surprised me with an orphan...yes, an orphan. I can’t even keep a house plant alive, let alone a kid. It turns out that I’m her only living relative, and even though we’ve never met, I’m her only hope. Great. Can I feed her after midnight? What does she eat? I have no idea what I’m doing.

They tell me this little witchling will need care for a few years until she comes of age. The bizarre fire leaking out of Elaina’s hands is a pretty good indicator that she is no witch.

Then the coven comes—they want her back. Necromancers show up, turning my vampire friends into enemies. If that isn’t bad enough, I have a demon problem now too.

Join me, and see if we can make it out alive!

This is an excellent start to a new paranormal series.  It reminds me of a cross between Mercy Thompson and Charlie Daniels and is told with the same witty dialogue and fast-paced action.  The story between Maia and Elaina had me guessing if I should categorize this as a young adult but it is definitely Urban Fantasy.  The world-building is quick and believable.

Maia is only 25 but has a lot of experience as a bounty hunter but when the council presents her with a 15-year-old orphan, she has no clue what to do, especially when Elaina has powers that are beyond Maia's comprehension.  As Elaina comes into her powers, the two really bond in a way that reminds me of sisters with trust having to build between them.  The assorted demons, witches, vampires are introduced as the world expands. It looks like a very promising series.

A very promising start to a new Urban Fantasy series

This was great. I think I've read (or at least started reading) every Urban Fantasy series on the planet at this point and am pleased to report I have a very good feeling about where this series could end up once we're a few more books in.

It follows perennially 25-year-old bounty hunter and mage, Maia, who's somehow both well-liked and a bit of a loner. Maia is abruptly summoned before the Mageri and informed that she has a young relative who's been recently orphaned. Maia has not kept track of her mortal family since her transformation to a mage some 30-odd years ago and had no idea 15-year-old witchling Elaina existed.

Talk about a turn up for the books...

I loved the fledgling relationship between Maia and Elaina. Maia definitely gives off cool aunt vibes rather than anything parental. I was getting flashes of familiarity in a good way to a couple of other series I love where there's a teenage character and that sort of mentor-mentee relationship. They can be very rewarding to read and I can't wait to see more of this as the series goes on.

Elaina, quite naturally, has a few issues in this book. She's a teenager, for one. I mean, need I say more? But she's also just lost her mother, been dumped with a stranger who doesn't even have food in her fridge and has some rather unsettling powers that don't seem to gel with her status as a teenage witch.

I thought Maia handled everything Elaina threw at her with way more chill than I would have. I liked the way she talked to Elaina right off the bat as an equal and a friend. Maia's character is pretty laid-back despite being a kick-ass bounty hunter. She strikes me as someone who only chooses violence when she has to. She's a naturally caring and protective person and she's made a name for herself as someone trustworthy and decent among the many different supernatural breeds she comes into contact with and has some friends in high places because of it.

Now, there wasn't any romance in this book at all, but... don't think I don't see what you're up to, Kim.

description

I know what you're doing and where you're going but I'm willing to play along. After all, I love a sloooooow burn. ;)

The plot was shared between a couple of different mysteries as well as establishing some worldbuilding and the characters, of course. Quite a busy little book but I thought it all balanced out beautifully. I'm looking forward to being able to delve deeper into the characters and relationships and for a more in-depth mystery in future books that don't have quite so much groundwork to take care of.

I think if you like series such as Shannon Mayer's Rylee Adamson series or The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy series by Hailey Edwards, then I have a strong suspicion you may like this one also. It's early days yet to know if it will reach such levels of awesomeness, but it's looking good.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

This book was so much fun to read!! Maia has been on her own for quite some time so she has no clue what to do when she is given custody of a teen relative she knew nothing about. Little did she know that everyone would end up wanting the girl making it necessary to find out why while also keeping her safe. This makes for quite an action filled story that you won't want to put down. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

My Thoughts
I generally read a lot of romance - reverse harem in particular of late, so I was expecting some romance with this and really there was just a good mystery. The investigation was pretty straight forward, but the mysteries among the characters were the truly intriguing parts. The story was a little predictable, but the characters were full of surprises. The world building is well structured, providing what you need and when through organic means as opposed to just throwing a ton of information at you all at once through large blocks of text. As a whole, the book lays down plenty of questions for this book and future books in the series to answer and keep readers interested.

About the Characters
Maia is a pretty easy going person who is honest and open minded. When she's unsure of what to do, she takes steps to learn so she can do the right thing. Elaina is a cool kid who is mature, but still a teenager capable of dumb, reckless things. She takes things well, but isn't out of touch.

What I Liked
I really like the characters. Maia and Elaina are great. I appreciated how Maia interacts with other breeds harboring no bias beyond her own experiences. Elaina explores her powers, but without getting too crazy. Liam is a walking contradiction and Doc is fun. The vampires were generally surprising. The shifters are good folk, but didn't have a big role in this book.

What I Didn't Like
As a rule, I try not to comment on editing, especially when I'm reading a review copy that may have been pre-publication, however there were a couple things that caused some clarity issues. What little perspective shifting there was felt a bit messy and I think Elaina and Maia's names were exchanged in a previous draft and not fully fixed yet. Everything got better as the book went on.

More Thoughts
There is a lot of action and it gets pretty bloody. The resolution to the investigation was exciting, yet felt pretty quick at the same time. The case was the only thing resolved leaving us with so many unanswered questions. At least there's plenty of content for more books.

Bottom Line
Overall this was a light and fast read all things considered. It left me wanting more in a good way and I look forward to more.

I had never read this author before, but I thought this book sounded interesting. At first, I was worried orphan meant a little baby, and I was curious how it would go. No, the orphan is a 15-year-old girl. Whew. It didn’t take long at all for me to be drawn into this book, and it didn’t let me go until the very end. Was this book perfect? No, there were a couple of places that could have used a tiny bit of work, but that was outshone by the wonderful characters of Maia, Elaina, Liam, Avery…well, just about all of them. Great writing and an interesting plot kept me captivated, too. This is an author to watch, and I think she’s going to go places. Give her a try! Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

2022 bk 170. I had a beautifully written review - and then I mentioned that a certain type of being that is the antithesis of angels kept popping up - and the entire review disappeared. Blood and Fire is that type of book - looks a little like every other paranormal out there. It isn't. It is about an independent, loner, female bounty hunter who suddenly becomes the ward of a teenage girl. It is also the story of people who seek more power than they can handle, very, very ancient vampires, shapeshifters, and you know who (see 1st sentence). It is also a book about loyalty, using your brain and skills, and knowing that change is constant. And now, I'm going to go check Amazon and if there isn't a sequel ready to purchase, I may cry.

I actually really enjoyed this book
Audio was fabulous
No smut or love interest at this stage it’s not a focus.

Loved the fmc the mmc and the 16 year old girl.
World building is great and sets the scene for the next book. No cliffhanger but it’s clear the story isn’t over.

Vamps, mages, witches, shifters and demons. Times are a changing and they are starting to unite in preparation for when magicals are outed to humans.

Gifted audio in exchange for an honest review I’m looking forward to listening to book two.

This is a great first book! Well written with an exciting and engaging storyline about an orphaned teenaged witch and a mage who is also a bounty Hunter. The characters are incredible and I just love the snark and sass. The world building is amazing and draws you in from the get go. It’s a fantastic adventure, one that I am excited to read more of.

It started out a bit slower than anticipated, but once it got going, it picked up the pace and really held my attention. I've never read anything quite like it, and I look forward to future books from this author. I LOVE Harry Potter, so I really appreciated those references!

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.

I received an eARC of Blood and Fire from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

At first, the writing style of Blood and Fire seemed enjoyable enough.

It was witty and conversational which I found to be fun. The main character is snarky, has a habit of cussing often, and was really entertaining right off the bat. But as the story went on, it got tiring pretty quickly. It became harder and harder to force my way through the novel as it went on, reminding me much of the quality of books I’d be able to read for free on wattpad.

While this book is intended for an adult audience, if one were to take out the near-constant cussing, then Blood and Fire would read more like a middle grade book.

Other than the brief fun I had with the conversational wittiness of the narration in the first few chapters, I can’t honestly speak of other aspects of this novel that I enjoyed. On a copy-editing level, I was surprised with the amount of typos, misspellings, missing quotations, and other punctuation marks that littered the novel.

As for the developmental aspects of the novel, there were many issues.

At first, I immediately realized that the plot moved really, really quickly. I would have liked it slowed down a bit and more attention given to specific scenes (for example, the court scene at the beginning of the book). However, about 60% of the way through, when things were “starting to happen” (I put this in quotations because even though things were technically starting to happen, there was no buildup — they came out of nowhere and had relatively nothing to do with progressing the storyline in any authentic way) I actually realized that there was not really a plot to move.

There were several inconsistencies, plot holes, and unrealistic events happening with no prior buildup. The “mystery” wasn’t a mystery at all, there was no tension or foreboding. Usually, when solving mysteries, there is a process in which one hunts for answers, and gets closer, step by step, meanwhile being thwarted occasionally by those trying to stop answers from being found.

However, the novel seemed to skip that process, with the characters being chased and attacked for no reason (even when they haven’t started looking for answers, when they are nowhere near close to finding any) and then running away. The magic also made absolutely no sense, characters able to use it randomly for numerous things, with no rules or boundaries. Magic without rules or boundaries seems a little too easy for me, and therefore extremely uninteresting.

And lastly, the characters, just like the plot, were extremely lacking. There was no characterization of the main character, nor the several other characters throughout the story. I didn’t learn anything beyond surface level with them, and because of this, I didn’t care what happened to them.

I really wanted to like this novel, but unfortunately it just wasn’t for me.

I’m struggling to write this review. There really wasn’t anything wrong with the book. But I finished it last night and I’m sitting here, at 8:40 the next morning, trying to remember anything of significance to mention. The whole thing just made that little impression.

I did like Maia and the world was littered with interesting characters…or maybe caricatures. But the whole thing was super simplified. You have what appeared to be a fairly advanced governing and/or policing organization in the supernatural world. Which means I had a hard time imagining the witches Maia faced would really be able to do as the did without some blood and fire audio intervention. Several convenient plot devices occurred to tie things together. And everyone singing Kumbaya and coming to the defense and assistance of Maia felt super contrived.

The narrator did a fine job and the writing was mostly fine. Past the halfway mark the book seemed to lose contractions, so the narrative/narration felt a lot less natural. I don’t know if I should blame the narrator (Stacy Dugan) or author for that though.

All in all, I think this was a middle of the road read for me. I’d continue the series, but I’m not in any hurry about it.

Blood And Fire: Alpha and Omega by Kim Mullican is set in a fantastic alternate world, where witches, mages, shifters, vampires, and demons are real. Despite their incredible powers, they still fear humans and live in their own hidden communities. The story begins in a hidden city called Atlantis. Maia Delacroix is a mage that works as a bounty hunter. Maia is suddenly thrown into the role of guardian of a young female relative whose mom recently died. Although she knows nothing of parenting, she reluctantly agrees and takes Elaina home. Maia feels a certain kinship as she recalls the loss of her own mother. Apparently Elaina's mother was killed by a demon and was accused of practicing dark magic. Maia agrees to look into these allegations, as Elaina feels something is off about it. To make things even more interesting, Elaina is manifesting powers Maia has not seen before. Will Maia and Elaina prove blood is thicker than water by making things work? What really happened to Elaina's mother?
I really enjoyed the world building as Mullican slowly adds new elements throughout the story. She has a way of introducing characters where each time we meet them we learn a little more, until they become an old friend. There is quite a bit of action in this book. It seems every time things are going well something pops up. There is an authenticness to Maia and Elaina's relationship. They are testing each other's boundaries, trying to see where they fit with each other. There is a warmth between them that grows as they get to know and trust each other.
One thing about the book that could have been improved was the pacing of the action. It was a little up and down. However, depending on the reader and their preference, this could be a positive. The other negative is that it seemed breed (supernatural being) stereotypes were emphasized. Maia seemed a bit surprised when characters acted outside their typical behavior, of course this may have been to aid in world building for readers.
This book was a fast, exciting read filled with mystery and drama that often centered on relationships. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
I would definitely recommend this book to fantasy and action lovers. It is written more for adults due to adult situations, profanity, and violence. Warning if triggered by death of a parent it is a central theme of this book.

Thank you to the author and the publisher, San Publishing, for letting me read an ARC of this book through NetGalley!

"One did not simply blow off the Mageri. So, I did what any sane person would do. I grabbed my bottle of Jameson"

"Family bonds are stronger than any magic"

"You're afraid of being a bad guardian, but you're not afraid to call up one of the scariest guys in the area for mom advise?"

I really liked this story!
It was easy to get into and the dynamics between the main character and the young girl, she suddenly is in charge of, made me remember a bit of the Witcher tv show ... and I absolutely loved that!
For fans of complicated word of mixed creatures, shifters, sexy vampires, demons and hunters, this is the book for you!
A book where you're going to follow a woman brought away from her human family to become a relic/creatures huntress. A woman used to her own independence, until she suddenly finds herself responsible for her fifteen-year-old great-niece and has no clue how to deal with a teenager!
In the meantime mystery resurfaces and a hunt stars but we've got no idea where it is leading to.
And don't let me start on the Harry Potter references ...

"'This bitch called me a half-blood' ... 'Think she read the whole Harry Potter series, or just the first book?'"

I loved how fluent and easy going the writing-style was. I loved how weird and complicated the relationship between the two main characters was and how badass Maia actually is!
I loved the fact that it shows how true and honest a mother-daughter relationship can be, even though the former one is not the biological mother but a person who takes care of you as one!
And, which is more, the romance, blossoming in here, can be the prelude for something deeper...
I felt engaged into the story from the very beginning and I'm really excited about a possible continuation for this series !!!

"Are we having a moment? ... If you cry, I'm punching you"

"Do I ask? Do I respect your space? What the fuck am I supposed to do?"

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I had never heard of the author or the series before but I fell in love with the description so thought I would give it a go and I wasn't disappointed.

25-year-old bounty hunter and mage Maia is content with her life of danger. Abruptly summoned by the Mageri the last thing Maia expects is to be given custody of a young recently orphaned witch.

The budding relationships between all of the characters were captivating and really helped to bring the story to life.
The plotline felt very fresh, straying from the path of the usual girl meets guy. Though I do hope the little spark between Maia and Liam grows throughout the series.

Blood and Fire is a very easy read, perfect for teens and ya fantasy lovers. The characters and plot were very enjoyable with so much to expand on. I can't wait to see what the rest of the series brings!

The only negative I have about this book is the editing. There were just too many grammatical errors, wrong names used, and stilted sentences. Every time I was getting into the flow of the story I would hit an error and have to spend a few minutes trying to work out what the author had wanted to say. If this problem is fixed then I would say this is book would be a solid 4/5.

This felt like a cozy mystery; except, instead of the protagonist having a pet, Maia has to take care of Elaina. It was decent. Easy to read. There are a lot of interesting ideas with the different supernatural elements and the general world building. I’m interested to see where the author takes it from here.

Wow! Just Wow!

That 'Wow! Just Wow!' is my straight from my core response to this book. I cheered, I winced, I empathized, and found myself caring for them all, even those who became destructively.

My last two "books" were good short stories wrapped in fluff to make them look like books. Writer Kim Mullican's Blood and Fire? This is a real book!
— Complex characters that are realistic and fascinating.
— Equally fascinating world building, plus a more realistic and creative view of what a society of paranormals would look like, including the social and interpersonal dynamics.
— A multilayered and complex plot with really interesting twists.
— There are battles and some deaths are a bit gory, but violence is not glorified.
— There is a mystery, then another, and then another, layered like a cake. Yummy!
— These are not paranormals in name only. We get to see them use their abilities throughout the book. Their gifts are deeply interwoven with the plot.
— Though story continues in book there is no cliffhanger.

This is a fast paced book and full of action, right to the last word. I already want to go back and reread it!

As to content...
— There is no erotica
— There are some "four letter words"

Happy Reading!

Blood and Fire is a the first book in a new series called Alpha and Omega. Maia our MC is a bounty hunter who is summoned by the Majeri she wasn’t told why she was being summoned immediately and was stressed a job she handled might have had issues she was unaware of.

Much to Maia’s surprise they wanted her for an entirely different reason. To her shock she she is the last living relative of a young teenage witch whose mother had recently been killed. Maia is named guardian to Elaina a young witch and given six months to see if the guardianship would continue or she would be placed in foster care.

What seems to be a straightforward role, soon becomes complicated as Maia realizes there are a number of individuals interested in Elaina because she exhibits strange powerful magical abilities. While trying to form a new family dynamic Maia and Elaina are attached in multiple kidnapping attempts and to hinder matters further Maia takes on a dangerous case involving ritual sacrifice and dark magic m. Can Maia keep Elaina safe and be a good parent? Wonderful plot and storyline it pulls you right in. I really enjoyed it and I highly recommend it.

Blood and Fire by Kim Mullican
Publisher: Syn Publishing
Genre: Sci Fi & Fantasy

Blood and Fire is the first book in the Alpha and Omega series by Kim Mullican. This is the first book I've read by the author and I am hooked!

I love books with a strong female lead and this book delivered! Maia is a tough, independent, bounty hunter mage, who suddenly finds herself as the guardian of a teenage girl. Together, they have to figure things out....and boy are there a lot of things to figure out!

Vampires, witches, shifters, demons, oh my! This book has it all! I found this book to be truly captivating and could not put it down! The story was incredible and I loved the characters! Sarcasm and snark are my love language!

I highly recommend reading this book!!!

I can't wait to see what happens next in Blood and Bone, which is set to be published in February 2022!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My first read of 2022 was Book 1 in the Alpha and Omega series: Blood and Fire by Kim Mullican.

This was a book I wanted to like. The premise of the story with Maia is one that I'd usually love.

Maia is a hunter, she searches for people and relics. One morning she is called upon by the Mageri and they award her guardianship of a teenager - Elaina.

The story takes you though a couple of sub plots linked to the main plotline of a who dunnit. Who killed Elaina's mother.

For me the story didn't quite hit home, characters didn't feel developed so you didn't form any real attachments to them. The story felt a little obvious, it was apparent quite early who was involved and there was no plot twist at the end to surprise you.

All in all an easy read to start the year. I don't hate the story but nor could I say I liked it. My rating is 2/5.

Thanks to @netgalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the 1st book I have read by the Author and base on this offering won't be my last

Bounty hunter and mage Maia has lost track of her mortal family since her transformation ......... now she finds herself with a recently orphaned 15yr old relative , Elaina . Apparently Elaina's mother was accused of practicing 'black magic' and was killed by a demon - something she cannot get her head around and she asks Maia to look into the allegations . Meanwhile Elaina starts to manifest powers that Elaina has not seen before ...... powers at odds with her supposed status - just what is going on ?

This book was an interesting read ........ a testing of boundaries , the need to trust each other , is blood really thicker than water ?
I look forward to reading the next book in the series where perhaps the potential slow burn romance between Maia and Liam might progress !

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

An excellent start to a series! This has the feel of a Kelly Armstrong, Kim Harrison, or Ilona Andrews; it starts with a strong independent woman, living a lonely life as a bounty hunter who suddenly adopts a powerful teenage child. Involving are the perquisite vampires, shifters and demons, this is a lovely story that draws you in and won't let you stop reading. I devoured this in one afternoon.

As a side note: I do have to say that there were quite a few editing issues with this book: change in tense for one paragraph, times where the characters' names were flipped, flips in person (first or third), etc. There were also weird pacing issues-for example, when the end of the book came it was a shock as it didn't feel like an end. All these things would have been fixed with a decent editor, but apparently no one did that with this book. It's unfortunate because if these problems had been fixed, this would have been a five star review.

This was my first read of 2022 and I loved it.

I absolutely enjoyed this book, there was of course some ups and downs throughout the story, but I can see the amazing potential this series has and can't wait for more. I am a huge fan of the Mercy Thompson series and can easily see this being like that, where each book focuses on the amazing different side characters. This book touched on the start of wonderful world building along with introducing us to many different side characters that each have a lot of potential to step up and help / be the main focus with the main characters to make so many amazing different stories. I loved Liam and Doc and really want to know more about each of them, also the Vampire clans, and the different shifts with the introduction of the Alpha of the shifters helping out in the story. I am really excited to see where this series goes.

I received a free digital ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Blood and Fire by Kim Mullican follows Maia Delacroix, a bounty hunter in a supernatural world with human roots. Maia has her life pretty much how she likes it until she is surprised with custody of a teenage, very distant, relative who possesses unusual powers.

This is a fast paced, action packed story with interesting characters (who make questionable choices like giving alcohol to a minor). The author’s writing style is readable and reminded me of Laurell K. Hamilton in characterization and dialogue. The authors note states that this book contains Easter eggs to future plots in this world which I look forward to learning more about.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and solid opener to a new series.

Such a great read. A mix between paranormal fantasy and mystery thriller.
And the characters are so well written and likeable. Hopefully we get to know them more in the books to come.

We follow Maia a fucking tough, whiskey drinker, bounty hunter and who also is a mage.
She lives in a town called Atlantis that's hidden from humans.
She's friend with shifters, vampires, mages, half-demons and dislikes the witches.

The story begins with Maia being summoned to the Mageri office and gets to be a guardian to a teenage girl Elaine, who seems to be her next of kin.

Though Maia doesn't now the first thing about paranting she seems to do a great job. Balancing her hunting job and the fact that the witches are trying to kill her and Elaine.

A great first book in the serie and I'm dying to know more.

Unexpected Find

This is the first book I have read written by Kim Mullican. It was a great adventure. Blood and Fire had all those things I like -- strong female characters, low simmering potential romance, loss, mystery, action, villains, and lots of questionable decisions. I enjoyed the various species (vampires, shifters, witches, and mages) tentatively trying to forge alliances. The main female character is a bounty hunter and used to being on her own. That is well and good until she becomes the caretaker of her young relative whose mother was killed. Now she must fight necromancers, demons, rogue, power hungry witches all to protect her ward, a teenage girl (who may be a half-demon) in mourning. There is plenty of action this Alpha and Omega Book 1. I look forward to reading Book 2.

Blood and Fire by Kim Mullcan is about Maia who is a bounty hunter in a magical world that is hidden away from the humans. Maia becomes stressed out when the Majeri summons her. She finds out that she is the last living relative to a young witch named Elaina when her mother has been killed. Maia is not the guardian of Elaina and has a six-month timeframe to see if the guardianship will continue or if Elaina will be placed in foster care. I really like Maia as she is very compassionate and kind. She seeks advice from other shifters when she gets stuck on what to do with a witchy teenager. Although, her powers don't seem all that witchy- so what is Elaina? It comes down to will Maia be able to protect Elaina from the parties who are just waiting to get their hands on her?

Fun read and highly recommend it. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review.

Such a great read! A mix of paranormal fantasy and mystery genres, Blood and Fire is the story of Maia Delacroix - A tough-as-nails, whiskey drinking, bounty hunter with a talent for finding magical items… and trouble. When summoned to appear before the Mageri - the legal authority responsible for all Mages, including Maia - the last thing she expects is to become a foster parent to a teenage relative she has never met.
I loved so many of the characters in the story, especially Maia and Elaina and the relationship they develop. Liam, the half-demon lawyer, was also a favourite - I look forward to seeing more of him in future books.
I would recommend this book to YA and adult readers of fantasy novels, especially fans of shifter, vampire, and magic wielding characters.

Maia is a bounty hunter and mage and she likes her life. However, she gets a shock of her life when she is called to the Mageri, and given the newly orphaned teen Elaina because Maia is her only family left. Elaina knows about magic but her witch mother kept her away from it. What might be the biggest discovery now that Elaina is trust into the world of magic is how much power the teen has.
This was an awesome and fun book with lots of action and paranormal presence. I had the audio book narrated by Stacy Dugan who made this book even more fun. She did wonderful voices for the different characters, and transported you into the story. The characters are a wonderful lot who will make you smile especially the lawyer. I really liked this book and am ready to start book two.
