Ravensfall #1

Mists of Ravensfall

Harriet had always dreamed of striking out on her own, leaving her disapproving aunt and her pugnacious uncle. So when the job of tutoring Marcus Raven's two children was offered to her, she eagerly accepted. Though it meant going to the ends of the earth, she couldn't wait to begin her new life.

At Ravensfall house, tucked away in the wild and forbidding New Zealand bush, Harriet entered a world of dark and sinister secrets, where chilling screams pierced the night air, and the brooding, menacing master of Ravensfall roamed the halls night after night. Though Marcus Raven intimidated her and challenged her, she would not leave. And when he took her in his arms, his warmth and tenderness sparked her deepest desires and made her more determined to uncover the danger that seemed to lurk in every corner, behind every door, waiting for her.

I was reminded a lot of Mistress of Mellyn when I read this. So it was a good book, very Gothic, but lacking something.

I liked that the setting was in NZ. That was different. Besides that, Harriet is a teacher, not a governess. She has a family (uncle, aunt, cousins) but she doesn't want to be dependent of them, since they don't love her, they just welcomed her in their house because they feel responsible. Same as Martha Leigh (MofM). Like I mentioned before, Harriet is a teacher, but there isn't many scenes of her teaching the children (it looks a bit more like she is the nanny). Like in MofM, there is a "simple" child, who very soon trusts the heroine. Master of the House is somewhat cold with his children (same), there is a rival, who seems nice but it is a bit wacko.

There is a ball, seems like the heroine wasn't as plain as she thought she was, she may have a suitor, she dances with the Master, etc, etc. Previous Mistress died under suspicious circumstances, and the Master is the main suspect. Heroine is a bit noisy, likes to day-dream constantly, drinks tea with the housekeeper to get more information. Same as MofM.

The ending was very melodramatic, and it doesn't really end. I am not sure if I'll continue with the series. I mean, it was good, I liked the writing, the mystery, and I think fans of VH would like this book. But I've read the plot of Book #2 and it seems like it takes place many years after, which I am not interested in.
