(2.5 stars) This one is a bit of a mixed bag. As one might expect from the summary blurbs, it is heavy on trauma and smut. The bedroom scenes lack in variety but readers can clearly understand what is happening. I appreciate that it also tried to give some meaning to the acts as part of their cover story, their bonding experiences, and as something relevant to the plot. However, it never gives an explanation on the "experiment" in such a way as to support that vague missive. The abuse and histories do add layers to the characters. However, I wish more of these were current events rather than disorganized "flashbacks" to add to the impact. I also thought the balance of justification (misery and development) to revenge feel off. So little of the novel seems like an active plan to escape. Streamlining some of the repetitive midsection, setting more goals, or embellishing the ending could have fixed this issue.
