To save her wedding date, Selena must prove her fiancé’s innocence…and find a murderer.
Wedding bells are ringing soon for Selena Marx and Calvin Standingbear, so with her plate already overloaded, a reality-show film crew tumbling into Globe, Arizona, barely registers on her radar, psychic or otherwise. The only thing Selena wishes she had is an extra hand to keep the show’s aggressively flirty host, Dillon James, at arm’s length.
Her bestie, Josie Woodrow, is over the full moon, sure that Monster Hunt will put sleepy little Globe on the map. But the show’s search for the legendary Mogollon Monster — this region’s version of Bigfoot — isn’t what makes headlines.
No, it’s the blood-spattered crime scene, starring Dillon James’ very dead body. The fact that something with huge claws ripped out his throat. And a strand of flimsy evidence that points a DNA finger squarely at Calvin.
Selena leaves no Tarot card unturned in her desperation to save her fiancé — and her wedding date. But all her cards and her pendulum can tell her is that the real murderer is close enough to breathe down her neck…and this monster won’t hesitate to kill again.
A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.
While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.
After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.
Better than the first few books. At least when she figured out the mystery she went to law enforcement instead of confronting the killer alone.
Calvin and Selena are now engaged and planning their wedding. A reality show hosts creates some drama and is later found dead with the evidence pointing to Calvin. Selena will not rest until Calvin is exonerated and the real killer found.
This review is of Wandering Monsters, book 6 in the Hedgewitch for Hire series, by Christine Pope. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Selena Marx and Calvin Standingbear are such a cute couple. They hold hands and kiss whenever they see each other. Calvin is a member of the San Ramon Apache tribal police and Selena owns her own store. They are both good members of the society. So when Calvin is accused of murder, no one really believes it. This book is more about being true to yourself and those you love than just solving a murder. Calvin doesn’t fly off the handle and get mad at everyone when he accused. He goes back to work and does what he is trained to do: protecting the public. Selena doesn’t give up on Calvin but knows he could never kill anyone and does everything in her power to find the real killer. Even the sheriff who isn’t on the best of terms with Selena does what he is supposed to do and follows the evidence. The characters are well known to us from the other books in the series and the town of Globe becomes more real with each scene in the book. This was a great addition to the series and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
“Wandering Monsters” is interesting tale about a Hollywood crew from the Monster Hunters show who are visiting Globe to debunk the myth of the Mogollon Monster. It’s a type of Bigfoot rumored to roam the area above Globe.
Of course Selena Marx proprietor of the only new age store in the area knows nothing of the myth or the show but she’s about to get an in-depth study of both when her fiancé, Chief Calvin Standingbear is accused of murdering the host of the show. With their wedding only a few months away, Selena isn’t about to let the matter of a murder stand in her way.
I’ve really enjoyed this series but this installment was rather disappointing because after bringing up the Mogollon monster little to no time was spent on it. Most of the read was a lot of blah blah about nothing and there were times I was bored. There were no intense or frightening moments or action scene which left this read flat! Sorry Ms. Pope but I was disappointed.

Once Calvin and Selena got engaged I really hoped that things in Globe would calm down. No such luck! Now it's Calvin's turn to have the Sheriff glowering at him.
Globe is in a spin when a cable monster-hunting programme comes to town. There have been sightings of a "Nessie" in the nearby area and they have come to town to disprove the sightings. Most folks are just happy for the extra business but someone is out to make a killing!
An obnoxious and handsy host meets a grizzly end and now Calvin is in the frame. Most of the town knows he's not involved but that doesn't stop him from becoming the prime suspect!
Another great book in the series. We're creeping ever closer to the wedding and poor Archie is still stuck as a cat! There is a great scene with Selena, Archie and her laptop. I appreciated my love for local oddball sightings being fulfilled too! Plenty of twists to keep you guessing and as usual the MC chemistry is amazing.
This is a fantastic addition to this incredible series! Once again we join Selena, Calvin and the rest of the gang and this time it’s chief Standingbear on the line! There’s a murder, there’s mystery, there’s suspense and of course this some romance in this fun and very enjoyable read that will have you on the edge of your seat!
Wandering Monsters Book 6 Hedgewitch for Hire Amid the activities of a Southern California, a filming crew recently based in Globe, is shooting scenes for made for TV production, Arizona’s answer to Big Foot. Selena is well into her “let’s get married mode,” although very concerned about her relationship with her future in-laws. Then the show’s host, Dillan, makes a rude about Calvin and then has the audacity to put his arm on Selena. Thus, we have the foundation for this typically enchanting Pope witchy romance. Dillion gets murdered by what looks like the Mogollon Monster. Unfortunately, the gruesome crime scene just happens to contain a speck of evidence that points directly to Calvin. Of course, Selena has to save her handsome fiancé and again become involved in solving a murder mystery. On top of that she still has not figured out how to remove the curse that made Archie feline! A fast moving and fun read Pope ties up some of the loose ends, namely the issue of Calvin’s parents, as their response to their future daughter-in-law’s witchy involvement. You will love this second to the last installment of the Hedgewitch for Hire Series and likely find yourself as impatient as I am to read “Uninvited Ghosts” and the long-awaited nuptials of our pretty witch to the glorious hunk of a man who also happens to be the Native American cop from the nearby tribe. We know all the new clothes Archie purchased have arrived, but will he be a man in time to wear them to Selena’s wedding? This book is definitely a cliff hanger, but typical of Pope she makes sure you are really ready for the next book.
I won't re-hash the story, you can get a good idea from the book blurb. Brief overview: Selena is put to work again as paranormal sleuth, getting to know more residents of her new hometown of Globe, AZ. Archie the bespelled cat gets to show his more sensitive side - who knew he had one?! Time is ticking down to Selena's marriage to Calvin Standingbear, his parents are still not exactly enamoured of the idea, and she still hasn't managed to find an answer to Archie's kitty status. So many obstacles, so little time.
As usual, Christine Pope delivers a rollicking, well-written mystery with engaging characters and good pacing. I missed the wonderfully described settings often appearing in her books in Wandering Monsters, because she's so very good at bringing her settngs to life, but that wasn't really called for here, with the pace of the storytelling. I still got a good picture in my mind of the scenes being described. I was thoroughly engaged in the tale and read it in two long sessions. How dare work stop me reading?! Jobs. Psht. I'd recommend reading the previous books in the series to get more from this sixth addition. Quality cozy at its best.
Why does it feel like Selena or Calvin can just never really catch a break? Poor Selena to the rescue once again. Book six in the Hedgewitch for Hire series was amazing. Selena and Calvin are busy with wedding planning, more one Selena's end, when a production company shows up in search of the Arizona's Bigfoot equivalent.
What an adventure, I have to say that I really enjoyed Archie in this one. I mean who knew that he could be sensitive? Anyway, it was a nice read, with a quick pace to it. For sure it felt like I read through it faster than some other books. I think this is my favorite of the books in the series so far, but we'll have to see how I feel after the series is complete. I did receive an ARC to review but this in no way has any affect on my thoughts or opinions.
I really enjoyed this book, but, again, the whole series has been quite delightful. Book 6 has some interesting twists such as the wedding preparations of Selena and Calvin. All of a sudden Globe may very well become quite famous with the shooting of a series involving monster searches. Globe apparently could be home for the Mogollon Monster. When a murder occurs that sees Calvin charged, Selena takes on the responsibility of clearing his name and finding the real murderer. Also, surprisingly, Archie seems to be showing some rather positive characteristics such as sensitivity. Maybe he will one day be human again. I recommend the book but be aware that the possibility of putting it down before the end will be quite difficult.
This is the sixth of the series and although can be read standalone, there are many references to previous books. It would be more enjoyable to have read the previous books, which are well worth reading on their own. The series is a leisurely-paced romance in Globe, AZ with a mystery to be solved in every book. Have you heard of The Mogollon Monster, also known as the Arizona Bigfoot? That's the mystery in this book, the monster that the reality show "Monster Hunters" is investigating. The true monster is more mundane but more deadly as Selena works to exonerate her fiance from a frame-up.
Great book but it had me on edge wanting to know what was going to happen to Calvin Standingbear, handsome chief of the San Ramon Apache Tribal Police, and fiancée to Hedgewitch Selena Marx. When a reality show hits Selena’s sleepy hometown of Globe, AZ, and the bloody body of the film’s star is found, it is up to Selena to find a way to exonerate her fiancé. The storyline is full of mystery with romance mixed in to soothe the reader while Selena solves the dreadful crime. Totally recommend this book as well as the rest of the books in the series.
Mientras más léelo los libros de esta serie más me gustan en un principio la narrativa no me parecía interesante pero me entretiene es una lectura cómoda sin mas complicaciones que los eventos desafortunados que rodean a Selena 😁.
This is one of my authors and her books that I loved to read besides for my reading enjoyment I feel they are very fun and relaxing stories. Usually leaves me with a smile. It us always a quick read and yet I always can't wait to read the next book.
These books keep entertaining and do not disappoint. If you like cozy paranormal mysteries, I highly recommend this series. The characters are engaging, and the storylines are fun!
I enjoyed this episode in the life of Selena . Yet another mystery cleared up and justice handed out. I am really hoping that Archie is released from the curse very soon.
