When a strange woman shows up outside our camp in the Wastes with monsters chained up to her RV, it feels like I’m the only one who actually wants to help them.

That big, grey-skinned monster with the cage on his head and the chain hanging from his back—something is telling me I need to help him. I need to free him. But I have absolutely no idea how I’m supposed to do that, especially when he can’t even talk to me to tell me how.

Collector Mary is finally leaving our camp to head back to her monster menagerie, so I do the only thing I can think of to help him. I go with her.

Now, this big beastie and I are traveling companions for the foreseeable future. Now I just have to think of a way to get that cage off his head, which seems like an impossible task. But I’m not giving up. He has no one else, and when I start to discover who he is beneath the cage, my motivation to free him becomes far more than just a desire to help.

This is so dangerous. The military is lurking. Vicious monsters are lurking. And when Mary turns out to be even worse than we could have ever imagined, my desperate bid to save this monster turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to die out here.

Gloam is Book Four of the Monstrous series, a post-apocalyptic m/m fantasy series that features monsters and human men falling in love. It is best to read the series in order. Warning: This m/m love story contains explicit sexual content and is not suitable for young readers. It also contains graphic depictions of torture and violence.

remember - monsters need love too.🖤

✦ i really love this series, but this book was probably my least favourite so far. not that it wasn't good, because it was.
✦ this dystopian world filled with all these different monsters is just so damn cool. can't wait to see what else this author comes up with.
✦ i just love that the monsters in this series are actually monstrous looking y'know? it's so difficult to find monster romances where the monsters actually look like monsters.
✦ the way i wanted to kill Mary SO bad... i really wish we got a chapter of Gloam torturing her tbh...
✦ i thought most of the human MCs were emotional as hell, but damn, they had nothing on Rig... this man was constantly on the verge of tears lmao.💀
✦ i'm hoping we get more vicious, mean monster mcs at some point (yes, i mean more like Wyn, but way more mean lol).
✦ Gloam was sweet as hell, just like Aury in the previous book. they were kinda similar to me in a lot of ways tbh. i'm just craving a wildly different, possibly scary, demonic as fuck monster in this series.
✦ i really loved Gloam's chapter at the end. so good. still wishing this whole series was dual POV.
✦ the ending???!!! bitchhhh... i am so excited for the next book. Moth, Lilac, Seraph, an appearance from Edin and Hunter?? omg bye.

**Audio re-read review, two years later**

On re-read, this book deserves the full 5-stars. It's SO GOOD. I'm obsessed with Michael Lesley's voices for Rig and Gloam. They were so, so on point. I also feel like Rig is the MC that I identify with the most, up until this point. He is sensitive, yet tenacious, and I adore how he never gave up on Gloam. And Gloam is a giant, gentle, smart marshmallow (with a huge war hammer). His story is also the most painful and angsty. I adored every minute of this audiobook.

**see below for my original ebook review**

*4.5 stars*

Wow, wow, wow! Gloam was just what I wanted. So much interesting character development and exciting world-building here. I could NOT put this book down.

Lily Mayne is just rocking every book in the Monstrous series and I'm here for it. I mean, slam dunk after slam dunk. I'm in heaven.

Gloam was so full of angst and so romantic. And the slow burn! lkfjslkfjslkfjdslkf, it was just perfect. These two spent page after page getting to know each other and communicating in a gentle, yet somehow insanely compelling way. It doesn't make sense how 100 pages of them just walking and talking was unputdownable, but it was.

I love how Lily Mayne makes her monsters feel like actual monsters. They aren't sexy vampires or beautiful fairies, but actually acquired tastes. I loved how the relationships develop organically and with an emotional connection first.

Gloam's storyline was heartbreaking to read, yet so hopeful. Adam and Gloam were such a glorious pair.

Can Lily Mayne keep topping herself with the next story? I can't wait to find out.

I liked Gloam as much as I liked the first book, Soul Eater, which is to say a hell of a lot. Lily Mayne rocks it with world building and character development.

The main villain of this story is a psychopath named Mary, who tortures monsters for her own pleasure (and that of the military). Mary is a member of a cult ran by the Herald, who are served by willing (and unwilling) humans, and the "owner" of Gloam, the silent, gray-skinned beastie that Rig befriended and left with in the third book.

Even in book 3, it was obvious that Mary exerted some kind of mental control over Gloam, and this story proves that to be true. How Gloam came to be under Mary's power is the main plot point of the story.

Rig (real name: Adam) is determined to rescue Gloam and convinces Mary to let him travel with her as her assistant. Mary agrees, but she has her own (nefarious) reasons.

I loved this pairing so much. Adam is adorably enthusiastic and doesn't let things get him down. He loves to talk and figure out how things work, and is convinced he can somehow cut off the head cage holding Gloam prisoner.

Initially, Gloam can't talk, but communicates with Adam through writing. Gloam is incredibly gentle and smart; he lives for knowledge and has no wish to harm or hurt. It was heartbreaking to witness his pain and anguish at the atrocities he was forced to commit.

Expect:

tension (there are quite a few twists and turns in this story);

angst (at one point, Gloam is coerced into capturing and restraining Adam when he knows it might may lead to Adam's gruesome death);

a cannibalistic cult (the rituals described are beyond disturbing);

betrayal of the highest order;

not one, not two, but three rescues and counting;

two cute "ballbag" beasties who just want to eat leaves in peace;

more Aury and Ghost (I loved seeing them again and felt they finally got the solid HEA they deserved in book 3);

a transformative, all-consuming love;

a definite HEA for the MCs;

and monstrously wicked sex scenes.

I am in love with this series, y'all!

I loved Rig from the first time he was mentioned so it was nice getting to read his story. Gloam is absolutely precious, I flew through this book because I had to see him freed!! I hate Mary and that creepy cult. I thought Rig was going to be stuck there longer and part of me wanted to learn more about them, there is definitely a story there. But another part of me was just glad for Samson. Although I feel bad for them not being able to escape together. And poor Seraph! I hope they figure out what’s wrong with him. I liked this book as much as “The Rycke”. Each one of these stories just has me completely captivated. ✨

Gloam and Rig's book is here! Our cute, eager-t0-help raider and the big aytorin with a cage on his head, who is being held captive by Collector Mary.

These two go on a proper little adventure across the Wastes and become the sweetest team of two. It's them against the world. They are partners in crime. Gloam is Rig's lion. (And out of everyone, Rig deserves a big scary monster who loves him unequivocally and will do anything for him.)

I love these two so much, and I hope you do too!

Next up will be Moth's book :)

Best monster saga!!

I'm in love with every couple in these books. I made my top couples monsters ⬇

1 : EDIN X HUNTER ( It will always be my favorites).
2: GLOAM X ADAM ( They won my heart in a surprising way).
3: WYN X DANNY.
4: AURY X GHOST.

Contains spoiler 🔴

I was very anxious forward to book 4, i've loved the Rig since book 3❤ I just didn't expect to fall in love with the gloam either❤

It was an amazing book! Adam is my favorite human ! A wonderful and very well built character. Gloam needed an adam in his life, adam showed up at the right time. The worst thing there is is to be enslaved, not to have more freedom to have your own choices. Mary is a disgusting human, a disgusting woman in every way. I felt like killing Mary many times, disgusting characters must suffer the worst. Having her head crushed was little, I wanted her to suffer more (yes, I have a very sadic mind when I need) ☠

Interesting thing was the cult of the Herald, Where there's worship, there's shit involved. I remembered a book I read with the name fallocaust, a pretty crazy thing. Most of the characters are cannibals. I was able to read three fallocaust books, but then I gave up. I felt strong that I was able to read 3 of fallocaust.

I felt sorry for Samson in the middle of a bunch of madmen, wanted him to have a book with him 😢

About the great mystery Seraph , I have a theory 👀

I think Seraph may have been a human, I think he's an experience of the military. Maybe he's the cat or another human ( It's just a theory) Maybe I'm totally wrong.

Whoever is... We'll know when Lily mayne wishes.

Loved this one so much. Micheal Lesley has really taken off with the voices .
Also Sean Connery Glaim gave me life.
.........................
Oh Gloam.... Shall I compare thee to a summer night?

Shakespeare didn't really predict that his words would be used for a monster-human romance but it is what it is. If Shakespeare met Gloam, he would have written Romeo and Gloam because DAYUM. Lily Mayne has created such an extraordinary world, with memorable beasties and I AM HERE FOR IT.

Q: Monsters Layla? Really?
A: Yup! *pops the p*

Q: But....
A: Don't judge me. *gives all of you the side-eye*

Q: Ok, I'll keep an open mind. Tell me about it. Tropes?
A: yay ok! Tropes! We've got close proximity, opposites attract, hurt comfort to name a few! #TropeyGoodness

Q: Well that sounds good. And normal?
A: well yeah if a tall grey monster and wee human fall for each other and do the nasty. Sure. It's normal. #ItsAnythingButNormal

Q: Ummm...ok. Well.... *flounders*
How does that work exactly?
A: You know the saying: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? It's exactly that. These human look past the monster's humanoid appearances and fall for their heart, their personality, and their very soul. *cries in swoon* #SurfaceDeep

Q: Awww. This is so cute! What else?
A: Well Gloam is just GAHHH. So swoony! And Adam his human is so cute and sweet and wants to help. The both of them are precious, individually and together. #StraightThroughTheHeart

Q: Ok I think you've turned me into a convert. What about the angst-o-meter?
A: Medium angst I would say. Some heavy scenes while Adam tries to help and free Gloam. But there are alot of swoony sweet scenes as well. #SoManyFeels

Q: Awesome! Steam-o-meter?
A: I've been waiting for this question! *skips on toes*
Let's just say that Gloam's pipeage is VERY interesting. And Adam takes full advantage of everything downstairs. Also these guys are vers! #FlipIt

Q: HEA?
A: DEFINITELY! And it's the sweetest!

Honorable Mentions: Gloam and Auty becoming BFFs. I can't with the cuteness.

Look, the way this series has my heart and other parts is hard to put in words.

But this was the least fave. And not due to the monster or the pairing here. I'll just list my "love's" and "didn't love's" and let you judge.

LOVED

🍆The way to free Gloam - inspired, with a faint hint of paranormal. The way Rig arrived at it, the resolution, the journey

🍆The Aytorin (Gloam) and their kind. Loved this species of Monster. Yummy.

🍆 The spice. 🥵 Every time i am in awe of Lily's ability to all of a sudden write absolute bangers when it comes to spicy scenes.

🍆 Cameos of other couples. Can't get enough of them really.

DIDN'T LOVE

🍆Adam /Rig - he was loveable and grew on me in the end, but to me he is the example of TSTL FMC in every. single. romance novel. Only he is a guy. That's the only difference. I suppose I didn't get the urgency which he felt when he embarked on the Gloam rescue mission. I didn't understand his attraction. And I certainly didn't see that he had any relevant skill set to survive this whole ordeal in the Wastes. The fact that he did is still mind boggling, and entirely due to Gloam helping him through it. Basically, homeboy just brought the 'i want you and want to save you' and everyone else brought everything else needed to achieve it. I can't bring myself to read F/M romance because f*ck damsels in distress and Adam was the damn damsel. Even though he was on a rescue mission. Ugh.

🍆 The pacing of the story. God this book lasted a year. Like, it took me a year to read. And I dual read / listened.

🍆 The audio was my least fave so far. I didn't like the Sean Connery Gloam and Adam was just bland. I would recommend reading this instead of audio.

🍆 This is more of a filler book to get us over to Moth. Because yes.

🍆 The Herald cult - what in the confused religious hell was going on there? No. Please none of that anymore.

Still having said all the above, I had fun, I enjoyed the spice and the journey. I would also say you kind of have to read this one to understand the found fam dynamic and to freshen up your memory of all the bonds and connections between the characters. Still one of my all time best reads as far as PNR series go.

All my Monstrous reviews:
Soul Eater - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Edin - ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Rycke - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Gloam - ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Moth – ♾️⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐♾️
Seraph – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Lor – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🦁 first off, i just wanna say … i skimmed THE HELL outta this book. so take this review with a whole-ass grain of salt. this book made me a touch anxious - not sure why - so i had to jump around a bit.

🦁 that said, what i did read i enjoyed. GloamAdam were an acceptably adorable couple. i happened to really like Rig's (or Adam) dedication to Gloam. he was willing to do ANYTHING to save his beastie. moreover, Gloam - like the other monsters in this series - was totally devoted to Adam.

🦁 my main issue with this one was how similar Gloam and Adam were to GageAury. both couples had a VERY similar vibe. and yeah … i wasn't exactly hype about AuryGage, so having AdamGloam be eerily similar to the previous couple wasn't the best.

🦁 however, i do love this world, sooo … i will be reading Moth's book. i've been really looking forward to his book, and i can't wait to see who his beastie is gonna be. also, Lilac. i cannot WAIT for his book. i THINK i know who he's gonna be paired with, but we'll see.

❝I am your lion,❞ he said, his deep voice low, his words just for me. ❝Loyal to you until the end.❞

Unfortunately, this one didn’t manage to suck me in. Perhaps it’s because the beginning paralleled too much of what happened in The Rycke, so I skimmed until it no longer did.

I honestly thought I’d be super intrigued by Mary and her menagerie but it all felt a bit underwhelming. Well, until me met The Herald, that was the best bit but it all happened too quickly.

I will say this one elicited the most emotions from me. I was angered by so many things, none more so than what happened to Gloam, especially by whom. It was so sad how Gloam reacted after The Herald, my heart broke for him.

Gloam is wonderful but he felt like another sweetheart, even though I wasn’t the biggest fan of Edin, at least he was a bit of an ass to mix things up.

Hopefully I will get sucked into Moth, it’s my most anticipated of the series. It sounds like it’ll be a good change of pace. Plus I heard through a little bird (cough … Cass … cough) that there might be interesting monster genitalia.

So, here’s hoping for the best!

My sweat Gloam. I love you so much. I always love reading the last chapters with the monsters povs but Gloam's chapter was EVERYTHING. I love how Adam never gave up on freeing Gloam and I live for those nights they spent behind the RV just chatting and falling in love.

Gloam slowly curled his fingers around mine, giving me enough time to pull away if I wanted to, which—of course I didn’t. I flipped my palm quickly to lace our fingers together

He was all I wanted. The rest—the thirst to discover more about this world, the desire to hoard its words and knowledge—didn’t matter anymore. He was who I had come here for. I just hadn’t known it at the time.

“You are my Androcles.” I grinned shakily even as I asked, “Who?” He chuckled. “The slave who pulled the thorn from the lion’s paw.” “Oh.” I had only vague recollections of the story, but I still flushed with pleasure. “And like the lion,”—Gloam reached out and cupped my chin—“I will be loyal to you always, my Adam. I will never leave your side.”

“There are people approaching the camp,” he said in his flat voice, green eyes calm but alert. “One of them is big. And purple.” The scream I scrumpt (ifykyk)

I absolutely ADORED this!

I couldn't put it down, only sleep made me put it down.

I adored Adam (aka Rig) and Gloam from the beginning.

Adam was just so sweet and kind, and determined. He wasn't going to give up on Gloam, who he clearly understood was being held against his will by Mary, the fairly evil lady we met in the last book.

Adam wants to free Gloam, no matter what. So when time runs out and Mary leaves once she knows the rycke is gone, if you read the third you know that Adam (Rig) went with them. We get to see his journey in freeing Gloam - and falling in love with him.

We learn more about Mary in this and what she's all about, as Adam convinces her that he wants to work for her in order for her to agree for him to go with them. Turns out that Mary had more sinister plans than Adam could have envisioned.

At first they're all just traveling through the Wastes, across the country towards the west, and Adam walks alongside Gloam everyday while Mary and her weird monster pet stay in the RV she has.

Adam learned that Gloam can't speak somehow, and it has something to do with the cage on his head, but he is very intelligent and can write down what he wants to say.

As the days pass as they travel, at night when they're sure Mary is asleep and won't come outside at any time, they sit and talk through writing down in Adam' notebooks that he brought. They get to know each other that way, and start to fall in love.

There was just something about Gloam, even though Adam couldn't see his face (in a way, similar to Wyn and Danny, how Danny fell in love with Wyn before he even got to see his face), that drew Adam to him.

As they make their journey, Adam learns how kind, gentle and protective Gloam is. He never wants to hurt Adam (his only fear is that Mary would make him hurt Adam, which you'll learn about if you read this.)

These two really had the best chemistry, and we really get to see how these two fall in love. Adam never gives up on saving Gloam, even when Gloam urges him to leave as that would be safest. But Adam wants to set him and borolesh free - and all the "beasties" that Mary has at her menagerie - no matter what it takes.

His kindness and resilience, his determination, endear Gloam to him, and we really get to see how these two fall further and further for each other, come to trust each other so completely.

Gloam's story really is heartbreaking, and Adam is the first truly good thing to happen to him in a long time. Watching these two triumph in the end was so wonderful and well worth the journey to get through to the other side.

I couldn't get enough of these two. The author said that she thinks these two even surpass Danny and Wyn for her as her favorites (*gasp*) and I don't if I'd got that far, but I'd say they are on even playing field with Danny and Wyn for me. They are certainly up there for me. (My next couple would be Ghost and Aury, and then Edin and Hunter)

I'm so excited for more in this series. This one didn't end on a cliffhanger, per se, but a definitely like attention getter. I definitely can't wait for the next one (or next short, depending) after that ending.

Also we learn at the end that the next book will be about Moth and no, I have no idea who Moth's LI is gonna be. (Like is he gonna fall in love with a human and his half-monster status will be the monster part of the human/monster love story dynamic, or is he gonna fall for a monster and his half-human status is gonna be the human part of it....I don't know, and I genuinely don't know if we've been introduced to his LI yet. Will be excited to see.)

I also can't wait to get Cat's story, maybe Charlie's as well, and a new character we were introduced to in this, Samson (I just had the feeling he'd be a future MC). I'm so excited for them all. I also just completely love this world that Miss Lily Mayne has created and wouldn't mind if this series just kinda....went on for a long long time. I mean who says that a series can't be well into the double digits, huh? (Nora Roberts has done it with just one couple, mmkay! ;))

Also learning that she's starting a new series with a Fae prince?? Um, yes please! I'm so excited for that too.

This is author is just so good and I love the non-human element to her love stories. It makes it all the more interesting. And with this latest installment, she really proves how she's got this human/non-human love pairing thing down. I absolutely love it.

So I definitely HIGHLY recommend this, a definite MASSIVE two thumbs up from me. Adam and Gloam completely stole my heart, and I just couldn't put this engaging story down. A definite win for me.

Onto the next!😍

❝You are my Androcles.❞
I grinned shakily even as I asked, ❝Who?❞
He chuckled. ❝The slave who pulled the thorn from the lion’s paw.❞
❝Oh.❞ I had only vague recollections of the story, but I still flushed with pleasure. ❝And like the lion,❞—Gloam reached out and cupped my chin—❝I will be loyal to you always, my Adam. I will never leave your side.❞

✦ even though i rated this 3.5 stars i still enjoyed this and loved the couple. it's just i didn't like it as much as the rycke, which i rated 4 stars so i'm giving this 3.5.

✦ the first 30% of the book was so boring i almost dnfed but once i got past that, it thankfully picked up quickly after that.

✦ things romantically and physically between them happened a little bit too quickly for me. it was 35% in and they were already hooking up. but as i read on, eventually it made sense to me. they have such a precious and genuine connection to each other 🥺

❝Finding you has made everything worth it,❞ he murmured, making my breath catch in my throat. ❝I would go through it all a thousand times again to have you, Adam.❞

✦ the way rig immediately sacrificed his life to help free gloam, he was so selfless and thoughtful. and how gloam made sure to always protect him, he was such a soft gentle giant. both mcs were amazing 🥺

✦ i loved the plot, it's probably my favorite out of the whole series so far. however, the last 25% was a bit boring for me and i had the urge to skim a few times.

✦ auryauryauryaury. him and ghost were in this quite a few times and they were giving me so much serotonin. aury is my fav monster so far, he even passes wyn for me (yes i know it's crazy). when ghost wanted to show rig/gloam how good aury has been doing controlling when he turns into his other form, my heart bursted out of my chest. it was so dang cute and endearing.

My best friend gazed back lovingly at the terrifying creature. ❝You’re doing so good, Aury.❞

🥺 like please they are too cute i can't handle it. i'm so proud of aury. he deserves the world.

✦ aury and gloam friendship. 🥰

❝If the camp lets me stay, I will gladly stand with you to defend it.❞ He paused, then stepped forward to briefly grasp Aury’s shoulder in a friendly grip. The big, winged monster beamed, his eyes jumping as he looked back at Ghost as though making sure he’d witnessed it. My god, those two were the cutest.

✦ the smut....rig's dirty talk. i did not expect that, he was so hot. 🔥

❝I’m gonna get the cage off you, then you can ride my dick again just like this while you kiss me. Yeah? You’re gonna kiss me the whole time. We won’t even come up for air. I’ll suck on your tongue while you fuck yourself on my cock.❞

like...wow 😳

4.5 Stars - A very heartwarming and emotionally gripping story, a tad more angsty than previous books in my opinion, the villain in this story truly had me biting my nails.

Gloam is such a beautifully written character—mysterious, smart, and carrying so much emotional weight. Watching him slowly open up was incredibly moving. His journey of self-discovery and healing was perfectly balanced with moments of tenderness and quiet strength.

And Adam? His warmth and selflessness brought so much light to the story. The way he interacted with Gloam—breaking through his walls with patience and genuine care. Their connection felt so real and beautifully developed, making every moment between them feel meaningful.

This book had everything: angst, love, healing, and moments that left me smiling (or crying).

Loved Aury and Ghost being part of this story, I’m also looking forward to know more about Seraph, poor Seraph 🥺

Gloam’s POV at the end was beautiful 😍

The way this book ended with Liliac mentioning a big purple monster approaching the camp!
I am so ready for the next book!

It was good, but I felt a bit slow in some parts.
But Gloam, despite not speaking for most of the book, was what captured me the most. 💞

"We’re the best. Monsterfuckers and proud of it." Damn right, baby.

RIG IS SO BABYGIRL, IT'S STUPID. He's so cute and so sweetly naive! I've loved him since we met him, his fierce protectiveness of Ghost, his cowboy jacket, and his love of gay erotica - it's about time he got his own big baddie beastie protector. Speaking of Gloam - we got ourselves another gentle giant, folks! Gloam reminds me a lot of Edin but Gloam has more of a solemn sweetness versus Edin's silly sweetness. His backstory fascinated me but what he went through with his brothers BROKE MY FUCKING HEART. FUCK THOSE GUYS AND FUCK MARY IN THE ASS WITH A SPIKED BAT.

There was something about the romance in this one that didn't have me totally convinced, though?? I still love Rig & Gloam, don't get me wrong, but the insta-love was very love (which we love) but also very insta (don't worry, I am also confused by the machinations of my own brain); more-so than past couples, I feel. It could also be that I'm riding the high of reading the Wyn novella cause, I said it before and I'll say it again, I don't think anything is going to compare to the love I feel for Danny & Wyn. They've set the bar remarkably high for me. Also, TMI but of all the monsters we've met so far, Wyn is the only one I'd wanna bang. Danny is also my favorite human - if my eyes could actually become heart-shaped, he's the one they would shape-shift for.

BUT OMG THAT ENDINGGGG. I CAN'T WAIT FOR ALL MY BOYS TO COME TOGETHER; IT'S GOING TO BE AN ABSOLUTE FUCKING SHITSHOW BUT ALSO THE CUTEST THING OF ALL TIME. MONSTERFUCKERS, UNITE!!!

Rating this is hard for me because my brain can't help but compare this book to other books in the series - if I'm honest, it's probably my least favorite so far. BUT WAIT, DON'T COME FOR ME YET cause it's still an AMAZING book on its own. If I was rating it against other books in the series, it would be a 3 but, if I take myself out of that mindset, it's more like a 4. Therefore, we're gonna meet in the middle cause it feels like a travesty to give any of these books a mere 3-star rating.

Rating: 3.5 stars rounded up to 4!

Pretty sure this series can do no wrong! Loved it again. Feel completely immersed in the world too (perks of being a binge reader), but I'll be so sad after Seraph and having to wait 😂

I love how bouncy and relentless Adam is, and how Gloam continually hypes him up - just love them together.

So ready for Moth, I love that dude already and I still feel bad for him, pining away for Ghost 😔

4/5 ⭐ What a journey!

I'm not frivolously giving four stars 🌟 I accept that I'm hooked on this series but the thing is that Lily Mayne is getting better and better writing her books. Don't blame me!

Some books focuses more on characters' psyche, others on developing the plot. The latter is the successful case of Gloam.

Gloam starts with chapters which intertwines this story with The Rycke but now Rig is the main storyteller. Rig gives his viewpoint from the arrival of the collector Mary 😈 and her RV pulled by two borolesh and our favourite aytorin (yes, this is Gloam 🖤). Tis event will trigger Rig's final decision of joining this strange women for achiving the goal of freeing Gloam 😖 which will be the hardest of the tasks ever.

When I say that the task is hard it is. Our boys will fight against the arid Wastes lettered with savage monsters, a crazy cannibal cult and an hideous woman with a narcissist complex who dwell in a manor with a enigmatic barn 👽 🤍

◾ The plot is EVERYTHING I wanted and expected from master Lily. Maybe the relationship of our main characters has been shaded by the amazing plot, but I consider that the greast point of this book is the latter.

Positives:
✔️An improvement in the world building: once again we have a better worldbuild, surpassing the previous books. I'm not going to be tired of reviewing this point ever. The natural wealth of the Wastes 🐲 🌹 is getting better every novel. In the previous books we had military compounds, the existence of fighting rings runed by the military 👿  (and other monsters) and, finally 🥳 we learnt about the lifestyle of raiders living in camps as the Nebraska one.
✔️ More and more monsters: we are here because of it. There are a wide range of monsters depicted here. Mary's deadly shulc (it casts the leading role in my worst nightmares 👻 ), our dear borolesh 💜, the pylk which mimics Rig's movements, the Herald (which is a salyik and I have some suspictious about it) and, obiously, Seraph 🖤 By now, his kind is unknown and he is lethal and enigmatic on the same level.
✔️ More doses of gory scenes 🩸: Lily has spent an entire red paint can 😏  I'm not complaining about it. I only say that Mary's shulc is the MVP ✌️

Negatives:
Gloam as Edin 2.0: these two have an identical personality. Two big beasties with a marshmallow as heart 💖 They are cute, but they are the same.
❌ The previous point has an effect on the main characters' relationship. I needed more of them, despite all the kinky sex I have not felt a connection with them 💔  The chemistry between Danny and Wyn is hard to surpass ❤️‍🔥
❌ The book ends 🥀

I love this series more and more ♥️  It's time for Moth🤍
I am sorry for any grammatical mistakes 💔 I am working on it!

Previously in the series:
Soul Eater 3/5 ⭐[Review is coming]
Edin 5/5 ⭐[Review is coming]
The Rycke 5/5 ⭐
Wyn 4/5 ⭐

“I don’t want to die, Gloam,” I whispered out loud, my voice soft and wobbly with terror. “I’m scared.”

Alright. Gloam and Rig time. These two dudes are just the cutest. This story is again completely different from the three books that came before it. We travel through the wastes while Rig tries to free Gloam, the monster with the tight leather pants and ass-kicker boots. They write really cute notes in order to communicate, and some of my favorite scenes from this book is just the ‘quiet’ evenings out in the wastes when nothing much happens, and they just get to know each other.

I was just… Rig. Not even Adam anymore. Just Rig. Good at fixing stuff. Good for a laugh. Normally, anyway. I didn’t feel much like laughing right now.

That’s not to say that the action-y bits aren’t awesome, because they really are. If you’ve read my reviews before, you might have an inkling about how much I love suspense and external drama, which really makes this series perfect for me. There’s not really a massive amount to say about this book, but if you’ve enjoyed the other books up until this point, I would expect you to enjoy this as well.

“Nasty habit,” Lilac commented flatly after a minute of silence. I snorted, reaching up to rub my eyes, my cigarette clasped between two fingers. “So is killing people.” “If I start to crave killing like you crave nicotine, everyone in this camp should be worried.”

Rig and Gloam just work really well as a couple, and sometimes they made me cry a lot. Other times they ensured I needed a cold shower. Holy hell they were hot together. Lily Mayne can write spice like very few others. Definitely a league of her own.

Well, I was pretty sure Wyn and Danny from book 1 would always remain my top favourites in this series, BUT … Gloam and Adam/Rig are coming very very close indeed.

I could not help but rooting for compassionate, kind Adam, who risks his life and conquers his fears, worries and self-doubts again and again because he can’t bear to see Gloam’s suffering. His dogged, almost naive, determination to rescue Gloam is touching, and it’s humbling how far he goes to do the ‘right thing’. (mostly by putting himself into "stupid" situations)

Gloam’s appearance belies what and who he is – an intelligent scholar and avid reader who ‘collects’ languages like other people stamps. And he is steady and brave, resigned to his fate and caring for other creatures even when he is in a horrifying situation himself. How he still can believe in the good of people despite the betrayal he’s gone through is beyond me.

I was completely sucked into the action from word go. With Danny in constant mortal danger and taking risks that made me gulp I whisked through the pages like a whirlwind. I think the most poignant scene comes in the last third of the book when I can report tears in my eyes and my heart thoroughly aching for both of them.

Collector Mary proves to be even more of an a*****e evil b**** than I could have anticipated in book 3. So it was great to see how things turn out for her eventually.

Yes, I had minor niggles again, but I guess knocking a star off for that would have been petty, particularly as Gloam and Adam totally swept me off my feet!

Fabulous series, and another really amazing instalment!
Looking forward to the next one!

Reread January 2024:

I don’t know what happened but I went to just glance through this on a reread of the series because I love Rig, but I ended up completely rereading this and enjoying it a lot more. I still agree with my original review, but I’m glad I reread it hahaha

Original Review:

This book has all the makings of a five star monster romance. It just needs some heavy refinement and editing.

To start, Rig is probably one of the closest characters to the TSTL trait that plagues hetero paranormal romance that I’ve ever seen in MM romance. I was anxious often because the author was able to make me care about him but he seemed to think dangerous situations were the best place for him to have a seven chapter internal monologue that was just repeating the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over…

Second, the traveling portion of the story really dragged out. On top of the boring, repetitive internal dialogue, I skimmed a lot of these chapters too, since it was just the same thing over and over and over and over…

Third, here is a list of words I never want to hear again in my life because they were used over and over and over:
- firebrand (Gloam’s pet name for Rig. And Gloam couldn’t even talk until past the halfway park)
- beastie
- dork

Lastly, where are the spicy monsters? And I don’t mean sexually. Wyn had attitude in book one. He wasn’t just the cutest little thing who was so sweet. Wyn sucked me in. Gloam is too similar to Aury in this for me who I think is ridiculous. It’s sickly sweet. They don’t have to be mean but it makes no sense for monsters to be the kindest, most gentle things on the entire earth. It also gets a bit boring.

I don’t mean to come off so negative though, because so much of this book is worth reading. The author’s imagination is fascinating. The entire plot is so much fun. Gloam is being held against his will by psychotic Mary, who really was a horrible person. Rig feels he needs to help free Gloam but can’t figure out how. Seeing things progress was a really fun ride, and Rig was lovely. I really enjoy the sex scenes since they shift a bit from the normal human style sex scenes. I was so, so very glad we didn’t linger in the cannibalistic church. All the little details the author throws in are great, I just think the books need some tightening up.

Overall, my attention is easily held by the author’s imagination, and I will continue to read the series, but I can see myself getting frustrated and quitting if the next few are similar to this and the Ryke (book three).

“How old are you?”
“A little over a thousand.”
I blinked. “Oh. Okay. Just a small age gap, then.”

I love Rig. His first words at the beginning of the book being about Gloam’s biteable ass, I just knew he’d be hilarious.
While this installment was certainly entertaining — Rig’s commentary and inner dialogue hilarious, the action and mystery intriguing, the romance sweet and swoony — it just didn’t quite hit like the rest of the series.
Even though he’s protective and intelligent and adoring, I didn’t love Gloam as much as I loved the other beasties. I can’t explain it.

“We’re the best. Monsterfuckers and proud of it.”

I’m still gonna bump up my original three-star rating to a four, because it’s probably my favorite series of all time, and I love seeing this cute found family grow. Even if they’re not my fave couple, they were adorable all the same.

“Finding you has made everything worth it,” he murmured. “I would go through it all a thousand times again to have you, Adam.”

CW and tropes(spoilers):
- Monster x human
- Depictions of torture and violence
- Found family
- Vers MCs
- Frotting & rimming

Sweet baby Jesus take the wheel *hyperventilates* this book was so fine!!! So good!!! Gloam can do whatever with me, I'm ready!!!! 😵😵😵

Oh my goodness, I didn't expect this story, I really didn't expect Gloam and his hammer and his *ehem* lovely personality, but the monsters just keep getting sweeter and sweeter in this series and I just keep melting. *faints*

We knew Adam went with the manic old lady to save the monsters since the rycke's book, we kind of knew he had a thing for Gloam, but I really didn't expect the depth that his character showed, the fear and anxiety he had and how he decided to face it all to do the right thing.

And Gloam? For someone who didn't talk for half of this book he had character, a sweetness that I felt from the first interaction and when he got the thing off his head? I seriously cried, so much cruelty and he remained kind, Jesus I love that dude!! 😍😍

And I also love where the plot is going, how the stories are intertwined and how that makes this world bigger and our understanding of it better.

Now, I'm making an official request because I want Lilac's book! I'm obsessed with him!!!!!!!! I need him like yesterday, but the next one is for Moth and I imagine Edin's partner's friend, I'm bad at names, but yeah him.

*whines* I want Lilac!!!!! 😩😩

Such an amazing book

I love this series, I’m pretty sure that I’m one of the top10 fan of Lily’s books🤣
The world building is fabulous, the characters are unique, and you won’t meet anyone in the book, who doesn’t deserve an own book about them. I love the monster**cker humans, but the monsters are the best!! I can’t wait the next book! Something big is coming, and I love when the previous MC’s are coming together, awwww, just gimme the next book pls!!😩

Monstrous Series Ratings so far:
🖤 Soul Eater: 3.5 Stars
👾 Edin: 3.0 Stars
🦇 The Rycke: 3.25 Stars
🖤 Wyn: 3.5 Stars
🔨 Gloam: 3.75 Stars

These two had no right to be so damn cute and crack me up so much!

At this point in this world, I might be siding with the monsters over humans.

Quotes:

"Was it wrong of me to be staring at a monster's ass?"

"Because you're important to me. I want YOU to be happy." ... "You are important to me too."

"I will be loyal to you always, my Adam. I will never leave your side."

“Don't make me get a boner while I'm kneeling in blood. Who knows what kind of kink could spawn from that.”

"You are my greatest weakness—not my true name, or any compulsion I can be put under. But you are the one I gladly carry. I would do anything for you, just as you have done everything for me."

"All I want is to spend the rest of my days at your side. Whatever that is. The camp is your home, which means it will be mine."

“He was all I wanted. The rest—the thirst to discover more about this world, the desire to hoard its words and knowledge—didn’t matter anymore. He was who I had come here for. I just hadn’t known it at the time.”

**small spoiler about gloam’s and seraph’s appearance below

so going into this one, i already wasn’t very excited. i had a feeling i wouldn’t like it as much as the others. the small glimpses we got of gloam and rig in book 3 didn’t intrigue me in the slightest, but i didn’t want to skip it all together.

honestly, i found the whole thing to be pretty boring. like yes, i understand that they had to be sneaky around mary and needed to form an actual plan, but dammit just kill her off and get it over with 😤 (don’t take me seriously, i know that it wouldn’t have been that easy :p).

and don’t even get me started on gloam’s appearance. soon as that cage came off and i heard “bald”, i gasped out loud. no way lily made him bald. BALD?? omg that was the last thing i was expecting. out of all the monsters i’ve read about who have so many fingers and weird animal feet, i’m drawing the line at bald 😭. not only that, but apparently seraph has 👀👀👀👀👀👀?? (iykyk)

yeeeeahh i can tell i’m in for a ride with these next few books… 2.5 stars!
