This was a free eBook offered on Amazon on 11/20/2021. Today, it is still only $2.99. I am only the 8th person to rate and review this little unknown jewel, published last year, in 2021, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author is an environmentalist and has a passion for enhancing and preserving the environment for the wild birds and animals of our earth. He’s a great writer, and at times, humorous, comparing the male species of the hummingbird to the human males. Funny!
My hummingbird feeder is set out. I put it up 8 days ago, on Sunday, March 13th…a little late, but they always find it. After reading this book, I realized I had to move my songbird feeder away from the porch and reset it under the oak tree a little ways away. Some songbirds may chase away the hummingbirds. I’m still waiting for a male hummingbird to claim this feeder, then, the show will begin.
MOST INTERESTING HUMMINGBIRD INFO
- the ruby-throated hummingbird is the most common in central and eastern part of the U.S. and is actually the only kind I’ve ever seen around my home here in southeast Texas. - They don’t migrate in groups. They are all alone. The males winter separately from the females…cause the females need a three month break…lol - The male ruby-throated hummingbird start their journey from South America, at night, all alone and two weeks before the females, over the Gulf of Mexico (500 miles) to land first in Florida, then spread from there, all the way up through mid and eastern U.S. and to Canada. They come early to stake out a promising home that will attract the female hummingbird. - So, needless to say, I need to plant beautiful flowers around my porch. They are attracted to shades of red, examples of good flowers are morning glories and scarlet runners, which have long necks and bright colors. (See chart of suggested other flowers with high amounts of nectar on pages 125-126). Hummingbirds are actually great pollinators, too, just like bees. - Males attract females by showing off, swinging towards her and away, over and over, getting higher and higher, up to a hundred feet in the air, and seeing how close he can get to her…like a child on a swing. Once she accepts him, they mate, then he’s gone. She feeds herself, she tries to protect her territory and food source he found for her, she makes the nest, she protects the eggs, she feeds the babies (normally two eggs) and herself. - Hummingbirds use spider webs, the downy heads of dandelions and thistles, even dryer lint for making their nests…so set out a ball of lint close by. [NOTE: The author says the size of a hummingbird’s nest is the size of a thimble and an egg is the size of a pea. He might be wrong there and maybe just wanted to compare to something different than what everyone else compares to, which is a ping pong ball representing a truer nest size and a jellybean representing a truer egg size.] - 10% of hummingbird diet comes from protein (spiders, ants, aphids, fruit flies, gnats, weevils, beetles, mites and MOSQUITOES); 80% from flower nectar, which provides nutrients; and our sugar-water helps provide energy and fat stores, especially at the end of the season so they make it back to South America.
There’s just so much more to read and learn from in this book, with a flower, vine and trees chart, flower garden tips, info and tips on hummingbird feeders, photography tips, and lots of beautiful photos collected from various sources of a variety of hummingbirds. There’s a couple of pages devoted to numerous links to the best birding webpages for learning more, identifying, and even tracking your sightings.
