About the author

Carver was born into a poverty-stricken family at the tail-end of the Depression. He married at 19, started a series of menial jobs and his own career of 'full-time drinking as a serious pursuit', a career that would eventually kill him. Constantly struggling to support his wife and family, Carver enrolled in a writing programme under author John Gardner in 1958. He saw this opportunity as a turning point.

Rejecting the more experimental fiction of the 60s and 70s, he pioneered a precisionist realism reinventing the American short story during the eighties, heading the line of so-called 'dirty realists' or 'K-mart realists'. Set in trailer parks and shopping malls, they are stories of banal lives that turn on a seemingly insignificant detail. Carver writes with meticulous economy, suddenly bringing a life into focus in a similar way to the paintings of Edward Hopper. As well as being a master of the short story, he was an accomplished poet publishing several highly acclaimed volumes.

After the 'line of demarcation' in Carver's life - 2 June 1977, the day he stopped drinking - his stories become increasingly more redemptive and expansive. Alcohol had eventually shattered his health, his work and his family - his first marriage effectively ending in 1978. He finally married his long-term parter Tess Gallagher (they met ten years earlier at a writers' conference in Dallas) in Reno, Nevada, less than two months before he eventually lost his fight with cancer.

This story was probably inspired by the serial killings of young women in the Pacific Northwest in the 1970s, and 1980s. A corpse is found by a group of men when they are out on a camping trip. The wife of one of the men narrates the story, showing her emotional response to the news. She identifies with the victim, and does not know who she can trust. Some incidents occur where she feels in danger because she is a woman. Chilling.

Barely takes place over a couple of days, and less than ten pages long, yet the limited word count is used exclusively to its benefit. Carver uses subtext masterfully, with even innocuous lines of prose carrying a huge weight in their context.
As an Australian young adult with a father, it's not surprising I first heard of this story through the Paul Kelly song "Everything's Turning to White". Learning that it was based on a short story, my curiosity ever insatiable, I had to give it a read.
I'm not an avid reader by any means anymore, though I certainly was as a child, so this short, sharp, and shiny piece was definitely the thing I needed to help kick-start my reading habits again.

Quite an unsettling story. I liked the way the 'so much water, so close to home' refrain seemed to operate both as a protest - why go so far? why get entangled with (commit?) such things - and a warning. There's water close to home, too. It could've been you.

Excellent, if somewhat strange tales


So Much Water So Close to Home
Claire, her husband Stuart and some of his friends are the heroes of this narrative.

The men are actually in the roles of, if not the bad guys, at least people with an ambiguous attitude.

As they went fishing, they have found the body of a dead young woman.

They dispute about the best course of action.

- She is not moving anywhere, says one.

That may have settled the matter.
For they arrange their camping site and food.
Then they think about dragging the corpse from the water, so that it would not disappear.

They pull her by the fingers and then tie her.

At this point I was thinking that they are actually affecting the crime scene and may have destroyed evidence necessary to catch the killer.

Claire is mystified when she hears what happens.

- She was dead anyway, comes the reply...

Nevertheless, she is concerned, if not obsessed with this matter.

To the point where her spouse says a few times

- You are riling me

There is an awkward trip to the beautician where Claire says that she is going to the funeral.

There they talk. About the poor girl and the cookies she was given when she was a girl.

I loved it, but I'd say it was weird at times, which again contributed to the enjoyment.



The Third Thing that Killed My Father Off

As the narration starts, we learn that the three aforementioned things are

- First -Pearl Harbor
- Second -Father moving on to the farm
- Third-Dummy

Dummy was a cleaning man, who died as well.

This is not a spoiler, for in the first sentences we read that father blames the death of Dummy on his wife.

She had a reputation for philandering.

Dummy was just a demeaning nickname, but that is the only way we now him.

People mocked the man who always had toilet paper in his upper pockets of the overalls he always wore...he never showed up in anything else.

Father did not believe in the gossip doing the rounds on account of the much younger wife of Dummy.


There are some passages involving bass fishing and then we reach a climax that I will not divulge and let you find all about it.

Για μένα, η πρώτη επαφή με το έργο του Κάρβερ έγινε μέσω των ποιημάτων του, με την εξαιρετική δίγλωσση έκδοση Εκεί που είχαν ζήσει, των Εκδόσεων Κίχλη. Ήθελα, βέβαια, εδώ και καιρό να διαβάσω και τα διηγήματά του, οπότε αυτή εδώ η επανέκδοση των πιο αντιπροσωπευτικών του διηγημάτων από τις Εκδόσεις Μεταίχμιο στάθηκε η καλύτερη αφορμή για να εισαχθώ στον κόσμο του. Και τι κόσμος!

Με λόγο λακωνικό και αφοπλιστικό μάς μεταφέρει σε ένα κόσμο γεμάτο έρωτα, προδοσία, απογοητεύσεις και μας δείχνει πόσο εύθραυστες είναι οι ανθρώπινες σχέσεις. Μέσα στις λιγοστές σελίδες κάθε διηγήματος σφυρηλατούνται ιστορίες γεμάτες τρυφερότητα, σκληρότητα, πόνο, ενώ ορισμένες από αυτές αφήνουν τον αναγνώστη συγκλονισμένο. Με την τρυφερή του γραφή δίνει φωνή σε χαρακτήρες - ανθρώπους του περιθωρίου, εστιάζοντας στις λεπτομέρειες και τις μικρές δυστυχίες της καθημερινότητάς τους.

Ακόμα κι αν φαίνονται ασήμαντες αυτές οι λεπτομέρειες, είναι αυτές ακριβώς που χρωματίζουν μοναδικά κάθε ήρωα και κάθε ιστορία και, τελικά, θα έλεγα ότι το πιο εντυπωσιακό στο έργο του Κάρβερ είναι οι σιωπές: πόση σημασία δίνει σε αυτά που δε λέγονται ανάμεσα στους ήρωες και σε αυτά που συμβαίνουν πίσω από τις γραμμές και όταν η ιστορία τελειώνει.

I love the ambiguity of this story and find it incredible that a male writer was able to depict with such subtlety and nuance, the fears and suspicions of a woman trapped in an unhappy relationship, disenchanted with men.

Beautiful control of language and portrayal of sexism and desensitisation to the human condition. The complexities of empathy in a domestic setting has also been conveyed in a manner that draws the audience into an understanding of the female perspective as they confront a heinous event. The use of limited dialogue, as well as first and second person narration continues to highlight this powerful lens.

Τρία βιβλία διηγημάτων του συγγραφέα συγκεντρώνονται σε μία έκδοση. Ετσι μου δόθηκε η ευκαιρία να ζήσω και τη λογοτεχνική εξέλιξη του Κάρβερ που τόσο δραστικά επηρέασε την αμερικανική πεζο��ραφία.

Γράφει για συνηθισμένους ανθρώπους και διαλέγει να αναφερθεί στα σημεία αποτυχίας και αδυναμίας τους...
Ενδιαφέρεται περισσότερο για τον τρόπο που επικοινωνούν τις σκέψεις τους ,παρά για το ποιες είναι πραγματικά αυτές.
Η φαινομενικά εξωτερική στατικότητα του κειμένου κρύβει έντονη εσωτερική κίνηση, προχωρώντας έτσι σε βαθιές συναισθηματικές τομές.

Οι περιγραφές του είναι λεπτομερείς και λιτές, δίνοντας βάρος στις σιωπές της πραγματικής ζωής.
Κάθε μικρό διήγημα του κάρβερ καταλήγει στο μυαλό του αναγνώστη σαν μία φωτογραφία ( λόγω της έλλειψης δράσης ) την οποία καλείται να επενδύσει με συναισθήματα και έτσι να συνέπιδρασει με το συγγραφέα.

Υπάρχουν πολύ ενδιαφέροντα διηγήματα αλλά νομίζω πως αυτό που αξίζει ιδιαίτερα την προσοχή μας είναι το καθεδρικός Ναός που συγκεντρώνει όλα τα θετικά στοιχεία τόσο της πένας του όσο και της εσωτερικότητας του.

📌Ένα βιβλίο για αυτούς που πραγματικά τους ενδιαφέρει η λογοτεχνία και όχι μόνο η πλοκή.

4.5 αστέρια. Τρεις συλλογές διηγημάτων του Ρέιμοντ Καρβερ. Ιστορίες της καθημερινότητας δοσμένες με σπαρτιατικα λιτό λόγο και αφηγηματική οικονομία.... Ιστορίες έρωτα, προδοσίας, απογοητευσεων, διαψεύσεων, εύθραυστων ανθρωπίνων σχέσεων.... Ιστορίες τρυφερές, κωμικοτραγικες, σκληρές, επώδυνες και κάποιες από αυτές συγκλονιστικες... Στην πρώτη συλλογή τα διηγήματα είναι περισσότερο ελλειπτικά και ατελή.. Στη δεύτερη- και καλύτερη για εμένα- είναι συναισθηματικά φορτισμένα και στην πλειονότητα τους συγκλονιστικα... Στην τρίτη πιο ώριμα λογοτεχνικά, αλλά και πιο αποστασιοποιημενα συναισθηματικά... Συνολικά πολύ προσεγμένη μετάφραση και αναγκαία ως ανάγνωσμα....

Claire embodies the dead girl and is transformed into the next possible rape victim unsatisfied with her husbands response to finding the deceased girl floating in the river. Her relationship with her husband becomes conflicted with every moves he does and every move he doesn’t. He can’t win, she can’t win with so much water, so close to home.

Raymond Carver’s So Much Water So Close to Home is one of the most disturbing anti-romantic stories in American literature. It does not depict love as passion or devotion, but as moral exposure. The story asks a brutal question: what happens to intimacy when one partner reveals an ethical vacancy the other cannot ignore? Romance here collapses not through infidelity or loss of feeling, but through the recognition of indifference. The story centres on Claire and her husband, Stuart. Stuart goes on a fishing trip with friends and discovers the corpse of a murdered woman in a river. Rather than report it immediately, the men secure the body with a line and continue fishing for two days. This decision—casual, pragmatic, horrifying—becomes the emotional fault line of the story. Carver’s genius lies in refusing sensationalism. The murder itself remains distant. What matters is Claire’s reaction when Stuart recounts the event with unsettling normalcy. The prose is flat, restrained, and almost affectless. Emotion exists in what is not said—in pauses, gestures, and silences. Claire’s narration does not accuse; it observes. And in that observation lies the story’s horror. What makes So Much Water So Close to Home a profound romantic story is its insistence that love is inseparable from moral imagination. Το βιβλίο αποτελείται από τρεις συλλογές διηγημάτων του Κάρβερ, που έχουν επανεκδοθεί σε εναν συγκεντρωτικό τόμο. Αν είχα πιάσει στα χέρια μου μόνο τους "Αρχάριους", μάλλον δε θα συνέχιζα, προσπάθησα αλλά συνέχεια ένιωθα σαν να μιλούσε σε κάποιον άλλον, κάποιον που καταλαβαίνει τι λέει ενω εγώ πάσχιζα. Στο "Λοιπόν, θα πάψεις, σε παρακαλώ" και στο "Καθεδρικός ναός" σαν κάτι να άλλαξε και να έβγαζε πλέον νοημα. Άνθρωποι καθημερινοί και απλοί, ζωές συνηθισμένες, άλλοτε φτώχιας και άλλοτε ρουτίνας, ενα αμάλγαμα του Αμερικανικού ονείρου που δεν άνθισε ποτε. Δεν υπάρχει ήρωας στο έργο του Κάρβερ, όσο και αν περιμένεις να τον βρείς. Δε θα θυμάμαι όλες τις ιστορίες που διάβασα, κάποιες όμως άφησαν πίσω εικόνες που μένουν και θυμίζουν '40s λογοτεχνία ex-USA .

This is one of those stories where I get it, I get why people like Carver as an author, because is able to portray so much (or the illusion of so much) in so little. Personally though, it doesn't really do anything for me - I don't find these stories particularly being anything for me; it's like eating white bread: is it good? Sure. Will it fill you up? Of course. But will it make you feel great or open up a different perspective within you? Absolutely not.
The main point of the story is that these men were careless and heartless, and it was hard for the protagonist to come to terms that she's married one of them. That's...pretty much it. Oh, and water was very symbolic.

Pared back style and diction I love. Full of silences and moments of subtle character action that shows instead of tells this heavy story of moral choices. I particularly love that the Aussie film Jindabyne is based on this story which places race alongside of gender in the repercussions of this moral conflict.

Carver is a master of minimalism. He lets the reader supply the usual general description, focusing on what is important. Sometimes ugly or brutal, Carver doesn't hesitate to write about difficult situations and the emotions they evoke. Το βιβλίο αυτό είναι μία ολοκληρωμένη συλλογή 3 βιβλίων διηγημάτων του Carver. Αξίζει να το έχει κανείς στη βιβλιοθήκη του και να διαβάσει όλα τα διηγήματά του. Το κάθε ένα είναι τόσο ξεχωριστό αλλά και τόσο όμοιο αφού αναφέρεται στην αμερικάνικη κοινωνία. Είναι κορυφαίος διηγηματογράφος και αξίζει να δει κανείς το γιατί.

Carver was able to discuss an often avoided issue that is still prevalent in our society today. In the span of a few pages so much was analysed about rape, murder and a manipulative marriage. The protagonist's thoughts are displayed in her actions and reactions to their situation. Carver has masterfully conveyed the message. Best short story I have read in a while.
