Foxman and the Cat Burglar

Rate this book
A Broadway stagehand and an aspiring actress lead double lives in this absurd comedy of masked mayhem and mistaken identity.

Would-be actress Cassandra never meant to be a thief. But after a near-death scare on the subway—and a timely rescue by a stranger—she reinvents herself as the Cat Burglar, determined to even the score with the city’s fat cats.

Timid stagehand Wilfredo always dreamed of being the hero, but he is blindsided when a viral video of his run-in with a masked thief turns him into the city’s accidental champion.

By day, Wilfredo and Cassandra work on the same Broadway show. By night, they chase each other through the city in a headline-grabbing duel between a masked thief and a self-invented hero. It never occurs to Wilfredo that his nemesis might be sitting right under his nose.

Meanwhile, NYPD detectives blunder after both vigilantes, Cassandra’s jealous ex turns amateur sleuth, and a movie star diva plots revenge on her spotlight-stealing understudy. When disaster strikes on opening night, Wilfredo and Cassandra are thrust together as the show’s romantic leads—just as their costumed alter egos square up for a final showdown. Masks slip, sparks fly, and their New York dreams hang in the balance.

This was such a fun book to read! I immediately was drawn to this book based on the title and the cover. I had no idea what the story would be about, but I ended up having so much fun reading it! The characters were quirky and the dialogue was very witty. I've never read anything like this; I love how original it is!

I completely admit I was drawn by the cover on this, well that and the title but I am so glad that I did. This read really brightened my day, the witty and clever dialogue, the writing was so good, foxes are my favourite so I was going to be drawn to this, but never thought I’d love this as much as I did. Fantastic and highly recommended

I recently finished a previous book I was reading and was eager to read something else.
I had ordered one on Amazon but I had a few days until it was due to arrive.

I decided to scroll through a pile of unread books that I have that didn't really spark my interest.
When I got to the bottom of the pile I said to myself, "I don't remember ever seeing this." I read the plot and was like no way I put this book in this pile, it sounds way to fun & interesting!

Well, to laugh at myself I LOVED this book. THANK YOU GOODREADS FOR THIS GIVEAWAY WIN and Delas Heras pretty please don't be mad at me for losing it in my pile. *hides behind the door*

I don't know who I liked more Foxman or Cat Burglar they are both hysterical in their own ways. Every robbery scene is nothing but hysterical. My favorite being the one in the gas station. I loved that the associate knew the guy who robbed in, it had my literally laughing out loud. Also, can we talk about the fiance or may we say ex fiance. He was determined wasn't he?!

I will end my review here because I'd rather not spoil all of the fun for someone who has yet to read this. But please go pick up a copy!

Freddie - set builder and stagehand - has no idea the path his life is about to take when he clears out his old childhood possessions and brings home a fox costume and a wooden ventriloquist mannequin.

Meanwhile, Cassandra is in an unhappy relationship, unfulfilled and dreams of being on Broadway. After she is mugged and rescued by Freddie, the two strike up a friendship which sees them both hurtling on an unexpected trajectory.

With the fox costume, vigilantism, viral videos and a heap of sliding doors moments, the two friends, foiled by Freddie's internal monologue (masquerading as the ventriloquist crocodile) , a Broadway starlet and Cassandra's jealous, possesive partner, find themselves at the centre of a Broadway show, a jewellery heist AND a motion picture deal. And each other's hearts.

This was a light hearted frolicking sort of book, that was all about sliding doors and missed-it-by-that-much moments. From the goofy main character to the incompetent doughnut-eating police to the vain starlet and the waitress-cum-actress, the characters were caricatures of familiar tropes, which made this a quick read.

The crocodile, Captain Pete, was a bit of a red herring in the end, with his presence simply the manifestation of Freddie's inner monologue, and after a big introduction, that part of the storyline sort of fizzled out a bit.

All in all an entertaining read with a typical happy ending.

The main protagonists of this book, Cassandra and Wilfredo, were ordinary people with unique quirks and hence, very relatable. It was wonderful to see them get a few lucky breaks. They shed their insecurities, followed their hearts’ desires, and achieved some of their goals.
Even Gregory and Ruby, the characters with negative shades, were not nasty or devious. It was heart-warming to see them also ending up relatively happy.
Captain Pete, Toby, and the detectives Molina and Garcia were all quite entertaining.
Initially, I had pegged this as a sweet, funny, uncomplicated story. Yet, Delas Heras made me think about the lives of junior artists, stagehands, secretaries, assistants, and the numerous other staff members who help maintain the glamour and glitz of the show business and its stars.
The title and cover reminded me of comic books. The situations were slightly hyperbolic. Both were fitting as the characters were prone to dressing up as ‘Cat Burglar’ and ‘Foxman’ and roaming around committing or preventing crimes.
I am glad this is one of the books I read towards the end of 2021, which turned out to be a rather rough year.

*A Thank you the author for allowing me to read this. This is my honest and unbiased review*

Hello Fellow Reader,

So, one thing I noticed in The Intergalactic Interloper was Heras ability to write unique characters, in Foxman and the Cat Burglar it is no different. While a bit outlandish and eccentric, Wilfredo and Cassandra were very realistic. Just two ordinary struggling artists in NYC just trying to get by who just happen to fall into extraordinary circumstances. Now, I didn't like every character, the detective duo were a bit annoying sometimes, but (and I can't believe I'm writing this) my favorite character was actually a ventriloquist dummy named Captain Pete.

Hera's writing was hyperbolic, comedic and witty. I loved the conversations each character had and even the way that he describes situations were entertaining. Given how things have been going in the 2020s we need more books like this that provides heartwarming humor.

Overall, a fun book with great writing.

Foxman and the Cat Burglar is a hilarious, energetic, and wonderfully clever romp through New York City’s theatre world. Delas Heras masterfully blends comedy, chaos, and heart into a story that feels as lively as an opening-night performance on Broadway. Cassandra and Wilfredo, two ordinary people with extraordinary secret identities, bring a refreshing spin to the vigilante trope. Their parallel double lives, filled with misunderstandings, daring escapades, and masked confrontations, create an irresistible rhythm that keeps you turning pages.

Beyond the laughs, Heras weaves a surprisingly heartfelt narrative about ambition, fear, identity, and the courage to step into the spotlight, whether on stage or in life. The supporting cast, from blundering detectives to diva actresses, amplifies the comedic charm while grounding the story in genuine emotional stakes. Foxman and the Cat Burglar succeeds as both a witty romantic comedy and a smart, character-driven tale that celebrates the messy yet magical pursuit of dreams.

Stagehand Wilfredo rescues aspiring actress Cassandra from a subway door. And then he becomes Foxman, and she becomes the Cat Burglar. The couple continue to play cat and fox without realizing who the other is. And their day jobs keep them connected on the stage where they each gain confidence and learn to thrive individually and together.
This book is cute, and it's a fun read. Some parts of slow with telling rather than showing. I also didn't like snarky Captain Pete. I would definitely read more books by this author, though.

What a cute book!
I originally tried to read it a few months ago but immediately hated the talking dummy thing that was supposedly alive and was going to mark it DNF. I tried it again yesterday and it got way better after the first chapter, so I was glad. I'm honestly not sure what the dummy added to the story, I found myself skipping all of his parts as I read. Maybe it was representative of self-talk and self-esteem? But then the end wouldn't really make sense.

Besides the dummy, this was great!

Overall a light, fun read. I don’t think I really clicked with the style of humor—I found myself more annoyed by a few of its quirks, like the ventriloquist dummy, than amused by them. The plot relies on a lot of suspension of disbelief and embracing its absurdity to get through if you have any familiarity with the worlds of theater, film, or detective work….That said, I enjoyed the relationship between the two main characters and the bumbling detectives.

Overall, enjoyable, with engaging characters (Cassandra and Wilfredo; Gregory can get bent).

I admit I entered the giveaway for this book because of the cover. It looked cute and quirky and weird. And it was!

Gregory's awfulness almost had me DNFing at multiple points. I stuck around mostly to see Cassandra kick him to the curb. Which took way too long.

No rating because I’m definitely not the target audience. This book was cute, but I was expecting something better tbh.

First of all, I wasn’t expecting a clean romance. Spice rating: 0/5

Second, no tension between the main characters. But you might like east breezy pseudo romance books?

It was also a little long imo.

But points for interesting (if not super dimensional) characters.

This was kinda wierd. It was set in present day but had that screwball comedy feel of a movie from the 30s. Even the way the characters talked felt very antiquated. A lot of the plot was eye rolling but I really liked Wilfredo as an Average Joe hero. I actually really liked Ruby too. She at least had a bit of spice and personality to her

A funny superhero style rom-com

She's a frustrated wannabee actress with a penchant for dressing up as a cat and being a modern-day day robbin' hood. He's a former drama student working as a stagehand. He dresses up in a fox costume at night and brings a bit of street justice to the city. When they get to know each other on the set of a play in production, sparks fly.

Entertaining weirdness

I'm not sure how to even describe this book. A few main plots. We have the story of the Broadway theater production. We have the story of the Foxman and Cat Burglar. Then the story of Cassandra and Gregory. He was such a misogynist. I just do t get why she didn't play Lorena Bobbitt instead of Violet from the play. Lots of weird subplots, too.

I was pleasantly surprised. This is not a novel that I would have normally picked up but I am a big fan! The plot is quirky and the storyline sounds silly but it really works! Even the subconscious crocodile adds an extra flair. Truly enjoyed this book and breezed through it!
