The Future of Competitive Strategy: Unleashing the Power of Data and Digital Ecosystems

Rate this book
How legacy firms can combine their traditional strengths with the power of data and digital ecosystems to forge a new competitive strategy for the digital era.

How can legacy firms remain relevant in the digital era? In The Future of Competitive Strategy , strategic management expert Mohan Subramaniam explains how firms can leverage both their traditional strengths and the modern-day power of data and digital ecosystems to forge a new competitive strategy. Drawing on the experiences of a range of companies, including Caterpillar, Sleep Number, and Whirlpool, he explains how firms can benefit from data’s enlarged role in modern business, develop digital ecosystems tailored to their unique business needs, and use new frameworks to harness the power of data for competitive advantage.

Subramaniam presents digital ecosystems as a combination of production and consumption ecosystems, which can be used by legacy firms to unlock the value of data at various levels—from improving operational efficiencies to creating new data-driven services and transforming traditional products into digital platforms. He explores the ways sensors and the Internet of Things provide new kinds of customer data; presents the concept of digital competitor s —other firms that have access to similar data; discusses the new digital capabilities that firms need to develop; and addresses privacy and security issues associated with data sharing.

Who needs this book? Any firm that wants to revitalize traditional business models, offer a richer customer experience, and expand its competitive arena into new digital ecosystems.

interesting read on the topic of digitalisation of companies. data plays an important role not only to monitor the behavior of an organisation, but also to create new product offerings and new customer ecosystems. the authors presents many examples and shows how technologies such as IoT can facilitate the automatic collection of data and the complete re-invention of companies.

i found the concept of data network effects particularly interesting. it is defined as the next step from classic network effects. the employment of iot devices and algorithms for processing and disseminating overall netwrks statistics on product usage and performance to everyone involved can achieve an exponential effect compared to the classic mechanism.

I enjoyed the book! I work in digital media, content production, and create content for a large YouTube channel. A lot of these concepts were interesting to explore from a smaller business perspective. The key takeaway for me: How can we leverage data and our digital ecosystem to innovate in our business, rather than focusing on products alone?

Overall it was good, but honestly a lot of it was hard to follow because I don’t have a background in business. I was gifted this book from a coworker at a former job, and I thought I’d give it a try. I think there is a lot of value if you’re this kind of thinker… but no everyone will find it fruitful.

Quick review.. Great book if you are in the digital strategy space and contemplating production digital transformation and also extending to consumption digital transformation. Author really explains the importance of sensor data and how that can enhance physical products and create valuable data streams.

Recommended for data leaders, marketers, but not for most readers.

A good read for people who are new to digital strategy and data strategy.
Contains some interesting case studies to illustrate the points.
The major downside is that the contents are quite repetitive.
Readers can skip to the last chapter to read the digital strategy framework, then go backwards to each chapter to understand the individual concepts mentioned in the framework.

"مستقبل الاستراتيجية التنافسية"

قرأته باللغة العربية من دار العبيكان ترجمة وفاء العتيبي
أخذ مني وقت طويل، ولم أجد النسخة العربية لأقيمها بعد أن انتهيت من الكتاب، لذلك لا أتذكر بصراحة رأيي عنه لكنه كان كمجمل كتاب جيد.
