I love it when I read a book that has well developed characters. I immediately was drawn into the storyline and cared about the characters and the outcome of this book. Although it is a novella, it is well written and fast paced with a emotional storyline that kept me glued to the story until the last word.

Biton Savakis is grieving. He recently lost his partner to cancer. Biton and his partner lived the D/s lifestyle together for over 9 years together, and Biton is having a hard time recovering from the loss of his mate. He is determined to get out the house and try to start a new life. He is lonely and longing for a companion to share his life and D/s lifestyle with him.

When his friends introduce Cavan to Biton his Dom instincts come to surface, but Cavas is special. He has been VERY abused, young (he's around 25...Biton is over 40) and has a mysterious past. Although Biton has a few reservations about starting a relationship with the sub, he decides to do what he can to help Cavan heal from his abusive past.

Cavan is confused. His previous Master was very abusive and almost killed him with his cruelty. Being taken in by caring people who are also in the D/s lifestyle, he sees that being a sub is not about being abused, but finding pleasure with the pain. Cavan is immediately taken with Biton and wants to form a relationship with him. But, Cavan has many issues to work through...from physical, emotional and sexual abuse to fear of abandonment... he must deal with before he can have a healthy D/s relationship or ANY relationship with Biton.

Cavan feels like he is running out of time. When they first met, Biton had agreed to see if they were compatable, and set up a contract to be together for thirty days. As the 30th day comes closer, Cavan knows he must do what he can to have the man of his dreams.

This book is a very emotional read. Cavan has been very tortured and abused throughout his life. He has to deal with many emotional issues. Biton is a wonderful Dom. He is a very likable hero that throws himself into helping Cavan, while he still grieves for his beloved dead partner.

The next book in the series is called Forever. This book has a very satisfying ending, but I am anxious to see how everything turns out between them.

I'm really really not in the D/s genre. On the contrary, most of the time i don't read a book because of it, or i have to be sure it's with light Bdsm.
But for me, with this story Shayla Kersten tell us it's only about love_ a different kind of love_ one you may or you may not understand...
But only love.
And i think she did it very well. You'll feel it all through the book.
And so, I felt in love with the characters right at the beginning.
And as a matter of facts, I'm running for the sequel "Forever".

You'll like this book a lot or you'll hate it... i don't know.
Can't say much.
Give it a try.

I purchased this book because of the reviews and the sample, and was very disappointed and, to be honest, a bit disturbed by the treatment of the topic of child abuse in this novel. Maybe if the writing had been stronger (especially the dialogue, which just seemed stilted to me), I'd have rated it higher.

First off, yes, I was fascinated by Cavan's background. His pain was my pain. But I felt as though the character of the dom, Biton, fell flat, and the story felt rushed, especially the ending. More importantly, I felt as though the short-shrift given to Cavan's recovery (which I'll go into a bit more detail about below) did a disservice to the plight of abused and neglected children in general. Sorry about the high-horse here, but my livelihood is inextricably intertwined with child abuse/neglect and the law, so I'm probably overly sensitive to the issue.

MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW: From what I read in another review, there is apparently a sequel. I don't think I'll be buying it, much as I'd love to know what happens in the long run.

I am sure Ms. Kersten really believed she was doing right by her characters and even for the cause of child abuse, but I think she really bit off more than she could chew with this depth of abuse. A part of me just couldn't imagine poor Cavan could EVER consent to BDSM after what he had been through, and the fact that Biton believed he could left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. Maybe in the sequel, the author addresses these difficult issues, but I won't be reading it.

Cavan was harshly abused and beaten for a long period of time (since the age of 11). The psychiatrist said to Biton, the Dom, not to have sex with Cavan because he was sexually abused. She said that it could take years before Cavan be completely healed. But then, does that mean that Cavan could not have affection too, and that he could not have sex for years? For Cavan, sex equalled abuse. By having tender sex with him, is Biton not helping Cavan to change that equation for sex equals love?
Probably, Biton shouldn't have taken Cavan into his playroom so soon after the beginning of Cavan's therapy. But again, is it not a way to show Cavan that to be spanked and even whipped could be pleasurable if correctly done?
I'm not sure at all that someone sexually abused and severely beaten in the past could feel comfortable being tied and blindfolded, while he knows he will probably be beaten without knowing how nor seeing the blows coming. It seems to me that, in reality, even with the trust and love that Cavan feels for Biton, Cavan would have imagined horrors behind his blindfold and he would have panicked.
When I was young, I lived in a very poor area where sexual abuses and every sort of abuses were common. I knew a young man who had lived in seven different foster families. I know how difficult it can be to maintain an emotional balance and develop self-confidence in those conditions. But this young man, even abused, did not want to be deprived of sex and been separated from those who seemed to understand him.
We are dealing with human beings here. Emotions are not partitioned: sex this side of the brain, emotions the other side, confidence in the middle, and nothing in between all those parts, nothing that mixes with other feelings. Sorry, but it does not work like that. So while it seems logical that Biton does not have sex with Cavan, it made me cringe to see the Dom drop Cavan every night in the other room while the young man felt safe only in the big bed and cuddling in his master's arm.
That is too short and the ending feels like having been cut with a sharp knife to have 2 stories to sell instead of one and then to have much money with the selling of them both. I do not like that when authors plays tricks on me this way. At least, if we were given the choice to buy the 2 stories for a lesser expensive price, we would not have felt tricked.
I hesitated between 3 and 4 stars, but for all my doubts due to the lack of realism of the sub's psychology and lack of judgment of the Dom, I give it 3 stars.

Am I being naive?

I do not buy that a systematic slave ring previously undetected would tolerate one of its victims being thrown on the streets.

Surely that is the epitome of stupidity? Sell them on, punish them further, kill them - all distinct possibilities. Throw them away? I doubt it.

If you suspend disbelief sufficiently Thirty Days explores the blossoming of confidence and hope in an adult to adult relationship over the course of a month and references harrowing themes of slavery, non-con and child abuse.

Cavan (formerly Michael Delaney) was taken from foster parents at the age of eleven. Believed a run away, he was the victim of a brutal slave ring operation. Most recently held in captivity by sadist Wainwright until he was thrown on to the streets. Now twenty-five, he feels lost without a Master to guide him.

Successful lawyer Biton Savakis has been in mourning for his lover, long-term partner (and lifestyle slave) Erik who recently passed away.

Friends introduce both men and it quickly becomes apparent that Biton may have the skills and interest to help Cavan rebuild his life. Cavan's wellbeing, may help to distract Biton's grief.

Perhaps with enough care Biton can help Cavan to give the police sufficient information to tear down the slave ring.

Do not get me wrong, I like Biton. Cavan is adorable. I remain deeply appalled that Biton would initiate intimate sexual relations with someone who has been systematically sexuality abused from adolescence to mid twenties. Even Biton acknowledges he can't be sure whether Cavan is gay or if his response is genuine or conditioned. That seems like abuse to me.

I do not accept that BDSM no matter how sane, caring or consensual is a panacea that can help deeply damaged souls to heal. I have no problem with BDSM (I do not practice it myself, so I recognise that I speak with no authority) but I would have had a great deal more respect for this story if intimate relations had been curtailed until Cavan was more emotionally resilient.

Which brings me to my final gripe, the cost of the e-book was quite considerable and a relatively short read. I bought and enjoyed the sequel Forever it felt as if both should be one book, not divided into two short reads. I subsequently discovered that the paperback edition From Thirty Days to Forever combines the stories for around the same cost as both e-books it is a shame that readers don't have that choice if they choose to read on electronic devices.

Despite my concerns this was beautifully written and just a little addictive.

I have bumped this one up to 5 stars now because I've read, & enjoyed it multiple times now so I feel I've gotten my moneys worth IYKWIM ... although this book is (I hope) an unrealistic portrayal of abuse & recovery, I really love the characters & the development of the relationship ... I want to boo whenever Dr Merten tries to twist & pervert Biton's intentions ... I want to cheer whenever Cavan makes a step toward recovery/healing ... the smex is a lovely bonus too ... this book/series is wonderful & I would recommend it highly.

Original Review...★★★★

I really enjoyed this book (and its sequel). The characters were vivid and I really wanted them to have a HEA. Although there was a history of abuse in Cavan's past, the tone of the book wasn't dark and brooding, rather it highlighted the resilience of a healing spirit and the developing love between Biton and Cavan.

I would have given this book 5 stars if it were more reasonably priced. I read both books in a couple of hours so although it was a worthwhile and enjoyable read, the price was too steep for the experience.

This is a book I will read again. The BDSM elements aren't too heavy and despite Biton's 'need' for a 24/7 relationship with a submissive, the usual mind games and need for the dominant partner to subsume his submissive completely was happily absent.

OMG! This book has everything I love to read about! Biton and Cavan have so much they have to go through before they can be together. The heartache from Cavan's horrible past left me in tears! Biton was wonderful with Cavan. Biton is a hero I love to read about. Strong, compassionate, sexy and dominating...I was in heaven! Cavan and Biton are truly meant to be together! I can't wait to read the next one!

It's hard for me to rate and review this one because it was difficult connecting with the characters. I did like the story but I felt it was underdeveloped. It could have used more details, less glossing over and more character depth.

Of course, there were some aspects of the story I liked. I enjoyed Cavan as a character and how damaged he was as well as how much Biton hurt over his deceased partner and his struggle to allow Cavan to heal properly. I enjoyed the parts hinting at how emotionally messed up Cavan was and I gobbled them up whenever I came across a scene where it showed how damaged he was.

Unfortunately, it could have used about fifty more pages. I felt like I was reading an outline more than an actual story. A problem would arise and not five pages later there was a resolution. I would have liked way more details into their lives, how deep their feelings were and how they'd be genuine, their recovery through Cavan's past and more into their relationship. Instead the story was more a 'wam bam thank you man' type book; quick and somewhat easy but not much to connect with. My main issue with the book, though, was how much it glossed over. I was really looking forward to how Cavan and Biton would use their thirty days of the contract together but one minute it was day three and the next it was three days till the contract ended. I was disappointed to say the least.

All in all, I did like the characters. They are somewhat shallow but likable enough. The plot had a lot of potential but could have used more substance to it. The BDSM element is mild but I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who dislikes anything beyond simple bondage.

With that said, I'm still looking forward to reading the sequel - Forever - to see how Biton helps heal Cavan further.

The total ignorance about abuse victims and healthy BDSM lifestyle in this book made my blood boil.

My issues with this book started when a nurse, homicide detective, and lawyer (who all claim to be knowledgeable and well practiced in the BDSM lifestyle) confuse a twenty-something (Cavan) kid who's obviously showing symptoms of heavy abuse (and was sold into sexual slavery around the age of fourteen) with a willing, emotionally stable, and knowledgeable BDSM slave. And ended when Biton (the "experienced Dom" with so much control) couldn't keep his dick in his pants, initiated sex with Cavan after Cavan's psychiatrist explicitly told Biton that it was integral to Cavan's recovery to NOT have sex with Cavan. I stopped reading the book.

I've never had a fictional book make me feel so much rage. It seems to me this author has no concept of BDSM practices or abuse victims and handled the subject horribly.

Thats not BDSM.
No.
That's abuse, rape, torture and everything that you don't want to happen to a 13 years old.
Cavan's former 'master's' a rapist, pedophile and a monster of the worst kind.
And after all this years of torture the first thing that do his 'new master'...the same thing.

Clearly people who had enjoy this book do not know the basic of human right and know nothing about this lifestyle. I felt a lot of disgust after reading that thing.

Unfortunately this wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. The fact that one of the MC's was stunted in his emotional development really threw me off balance and I was not able to recover. I got a little creeped out and am not able to recommend this book. Personal preference only, as the rest of the book was great and by the end the MC had pretty much recovered. Your experience could very well be completely different. Age difference is a REALLY touchy subject with me.

Very powerful book and given it it a novella that's saying something.

Cavan was so damaged, so sad, lost and confused. He was a heartbreaking character, having been battered around and abused since a boy, lost in the foster system, groomed for and then ransomed off to sadistic pedophiles. Cavan had little idea of dealing with others, especially outside of mechanically doing what he was told, never being able to think or feel for fear of brutal ramifications. In spite of this he was such a sweet, innocent character.

Biton was grieving after his lover and submissive of 10 years, Erik, died from cancer. Being a Dom, powerful and wealthy, used to being in control, added another blow to his life when he felt powerless to stop Erik's cancer. Biton is a decent man who feels he may be attracted to Cavan, the redheaded sub, when he sees him at a friends planned sub meet and greet. Once he discovers how damaged Cavan is he feels some trepidation at what could be involved helping someone so emotionally decimated when he himself was dealing with his own grief. Biton offers Cavan a 30 day Master/slave contract to see how things progress for them both, hence the name of the novella.

This story is very believable, there are terrible people in this world who do terrible things to the young. Cavan is very lucky to have found Biton as he cares and takes steps to improve Cavan's life and get him to open up bit by agonising bit. He encourages him to talk to the police when he finds out his horrible story, which scares the living breath out of Cavan, but he does it. Cavan gives Biton someone to take his mind of his own grief, to feel better by helping another. The sex in this book is interesting, it is hot, well written but at the beginning it is slightly uncomfortable, knowing what has happened to Cavan, that he is incapable of saying no. It gives you pause to consider whether it is or isn't right. Biton also questions this as does the therapist, Dr Merten. However, as you progress the sex becomes comfortable, it feels right for the two of them to be together physically. Biton is kind and takes Cavan's best interests into consideration. Cavan craves Biton's kindness and softer human touch, they both need the personal contact.

More food for thought is the choice of a therapist, making sure they are not only competent but that they don't have their own agenda to push. If a therapist says words along the lines of "I'm up for a challenge"- run, as that is not inspiring of someone doing something with the right level of compassion and relevant experience for the patient.

Thirty Days was short but still unbelievably engrossing, hence the 5 star rating. Shayla Kersten has done such a good job here, I craved more, but there is book two, so on to that one.

Wow! I rarely give 5 stars to such short stories (maybe except for the ficlets by Cordelia Kingsbridge ;) In her case - guilty as charged!!!). Shayla Kersten was for me a completely new author and... what a surprise!

I enjoy BDSM books immensely. I love Master/slave dynamics. And... I'm a total sucker for abused subs... I'm sorry but I am!
And in Thirty Days I found exactly what I was looking for ;)

It's a sad but also beautiful story of Cavan, a 25-year-old, milky pale redhead who had been abused by his douche of a master before he met Biton, a 42-year old lawyer and a Dom mourning after his beloved sub's death.

Meeting Biton changes Cavan's life completely! Together with his detective friend, and also a Dom, Biton discovers the terrible abuse Cavan has suffered . That first traumatic night leads to signing a temporary contract between Biton and Cavan - the titular 30 days. It's the only way for Biton to reassure Cavan of his intent to keep him. Meanwhile, they investigate Cavan's case and find him all the help he needs.

Biton also shows Cavan a totally new way of life - the freedom of choice, learning, reading, shopping etc. All those things that Cavan's missed to do so far. Slowly, the MCs also explore the D/s elements... You see, Biton was wary at the beginning, taking into account what Cavan's been through, and was suppressing his inclinations to dominate his sub. But... ;)

I'm not going to spill any more details because the book is really short and I don't want to spoil Biton and Cavan's story...

Biton is in morning over the loss of his life partner and sub Erick to cancer. He is struggling to find a reason to go forward when his friend Antonio introduces him to Cavan. Cavan is a lost and broken soul whose former master did his best to kill Cavan before putting him out on the street, wounded and homeless. Biton is not sure he has what is needed to help Cavan’s broken soul but is drawn to him, then a “get to know you” lunch turns into a 30 day contract. As the extent of the horrors that Cavan had lived through is revealed, Biton is trying to do his best for Cavan, even bringing outside help. At the same time Briton hopelessly tries not to fall in love with Cavan because once Cavan starts to understand freedom, he may not stay once the 30 days are up.

I was afraid that this would be one of those brutal reads that leave you raw after reading and was surprised and relieved that it wasn’t the case. This was about healing and closure. Don't get me wrong, in no way is this nice and fuzzy. Cavan is so lost that he carries around the collar of the former master like security blanket. You cannot help but want to wrap him up in cotton and take care of him. I loved this story and before I even finished I went and bought the sequel Forever.

What a torturously sad story this is. Biton is grieving over the death of his partner of 10 years. His friend introduces him to Cavan, a young man who was basically kidnapped at age 11, forced by foster parents to be their slave, sexually by age 13. At age 16, his current foster parents sold him to a horrible Master (telling him he was 18) and the torture with him was horrific. He managed to escape after being put into the hospital a few times. Biton signs a contract with Cavan for 30 days to see how things go. Biton is not sure he can deal with the amount of recovery it will take for Cavan to be his own person, as he ultimately wants him to be. I wish more time was spent showing how they dealt with issues over the 30 days. Poor Cavan has to relive the horrors of his slavery in order to put the previous Master behind bars. I wish there were more details about Cavan's visits with the therapist. All in all, this was a fabulous, well written story that I think could have been a 5 star had it not been quite so rushed. I'm looking forward to the next book to see how things are progressing with Biton and Cavan.

Im not going to pretend this was a hard read. The subject matter wasn't easy.
The story centers on Caven, a young man who was sold into slavery at the age of 16, having been conditioned for it from the age of 11 and Biton, a Master who is still 'recovering' from the death of his former slave and lover.
In an effort to try to get Biton to move on, a party is hosted at a firends home where Biton sees Caven.
Thibngs move on and Caven moves in with Biton on a 30 contract.
The story moves through Bitom trying to get Caven back into a good place, the arrest of Caven's former Master and of course a HFN.
I have seen other reviews where the reviewers have commented on the way that the author describes the abuse. However, I think it was handled just right, you certainly got a flavor of the abose suffered by Caven.
I would recommend this book but you might either want to read book 2 right away or have something fluffy to read right after.

Biton (how the hell do you pronounce that?) is a dom who’s sub and love of his life of 10 years died from cancer. He decides he’s ready to get back out there and goes to a friend’s place for a small party. He meets Cavan who was badly abused and tossed out by his previous master. He was a virtual slave who has little memory of his life before his servitude. Biton is attracted and agrees to take Cavan on for 30 days and realizes how damaged he is. It comes to light that Cavan saw his master kill another slave and that probably Cavan was sold as a teen to the life and they try to arrest those responsible. The story continues in Forever. I’m not a huge BDSM fan but this wasn’t too bad as a mystery and Biton trying to teach Cavan how life on the outside worked was more of the story. This was a pick it for me challenge at Good Reads.

I dont know why, but usually bdsm books makes me want to be a very bad sub, and say no and stfu to everything the dom wants to do.. Its probably my stubborn-ness (no kidding) so I've tried to stay away from the genre, but after having read the blurp for this book, I had to read it.

And I'm so glad I did.. I had none of my "As if" moments while reading this short story, and just enjoyed reading it, if thats the right word with subjects as abuse and what not..

I thought Biton was great and could be the first dom I havent ended up hating, so thats a big plus, yeah? lol No, I really liked it, and I'm definitely reading book 2 next..

Outstanding. A little short. At first I was kind of upset because I didn't think that they were getting Cavan enough help. It seemed weird to me that Biton would try any pain with Cavan and then Biton redeemed himself when he realized he shouldn't. I am a real sucker for a man with a tragic past that tries hard to overcome and Cavan certainly is one of those guys. I adored that Biton loved him and wanted to help even at risk to his career. You must read the follow up to get closure as it is EVEN BETTER than this one!

Lots of potential, dismal execution. The plot is based on a couple of too-difficult topics, the loss to cancer of a long time partner for Biton and horrific, long-term child abuse for Cavan/Michael. These are deeply emotional, life-changing experiences to deal with in such a short story. As a result both issues get treated too shallowly, which then sorely disappoints readers. It feels like a careless insult to our intelligence and to all those who've gone through similar situations. Shira Anthony's review details pretty much everything I felt reading this.

Interesting concept, similar to the one found in Beloved Vampire by Joey W. Hill but this was not handled well. Biton is 40-ish and his partner is 26, with the mind and emotional depth of a child. Cavan was horribly abused by his previous Master. So what is the first thing Biton do when he is alone with Cavan? Binds him up and spanks him, knowing Cavan's tragic past. This story's only saving grace is that Cavan was given counseling and the knowledge that his abuser was behind bars.

This story was right up my alley...angst, emotional, more angst and more emotional, before finally a light at the end of that long, dark tunnel. One man grief strickened and the other struggling from years of abuse...don't ever let it be told that I don't love me some haunted & emotionally tortured men. Oh and a little BDSM thrown in too.

This was a difficult read because of how severely abused, both physically and emotionally, Cavan had been by others. Biton is so understanding and patient with Cavan, helping him both personally and professionally, get the guidance he needs to become whole again. This book is just half the story. If you are invested in Cavan's and Biton's full story, then Forever must be read. However, if Thirty Days is just too heavy, then it can be read alone.

This shit is really good !

I love to read stories about two broken souls finding one another and being able to not only heal, but to also have a second chance at love. Given the difficult circumstances for both MC’s, this first part is understandably about figuring things out (especially important given the D/s nature of the relationship). Looking forward to more in the sequel…

¡Que bonita historia! Los dos protagonistas son hombres muy dulces y agradables. La historia es sencilla y las escenas eróticas muy bien escritas. Que uno sea mucho mayor de edad y otro menor es un plus.
