In his world, everyone wears a mask.

When the actors who play iconic superheroes in big screen blockbusters start dying on set, Ken Allen, failed actor and neophyte detective, answers the call after the blame falls on effects expert Ray Ford, Ken’s oldest friend.

But the deaths are not accidental. Someone is killing heroes. Maybe for love, maybe for money. Maybe for both. Ke

I received a gifted copy and am providing a review.
This is certainly a different take on your “typical” murder mystery. Ken Allen had a one-time not-quite-starring role as Jove Brand. Needless to say, the movie flopped and he went on to become a private investigator. Through his role of Jove Brand, he met special effects guru, Ray Ford, and they formed a friendship … all these many years later. Fast forward to present day when some mysterious deaths occurred not just a one production company but

They say heroes never die since they live on in memory. That’s not true in this book.

The superheroes don’t die but many of the ones behind the mask do.

Ken was a superhero failure, so he sort of just fell into detective mode. But with something extra.

The master of fx created all manner of gadgets for him. That also included his ride.

Trying to figure out who was behind the killings and then trying to find him was like muddling one’s way through a maze.

Ken Allen managed to survive his first case. Now, he has a new challenge. Roy, a special effects master in the movie industry, has a problem. His special effects are being tampered with. Accidents are happening on set and Roy is under suspicion. Since Roy provides Ken vehicles and multiple gadgets, Ken wants to prove that Roy is innocent. However, the more Ken digs into the case, the more convoluted the story becomes. Ken has to solve multiple mysteries and survive a boss fight! J. A. Crawford p ...more

Ended up enjoying although it started off slow. At times it felt like a sequel but to my knowledge it is not part of a series. There was some back story and asides that made it slow at times. Overall, a very creative tale with a wonderful character base and interesting plot. The main character Ken reminded me a great deal of Sean on “Psych!” Very funny. I could see this being a base for a movie or tv show. The ending was a bit of a let down, but nicely tied up. I wonder if this will be the start ...more
