This is part of the author’s forthcoming A Stitch Between Worlds, but as it also has a live separate release, I wanted to share a review for it here as well.

This is a futuristic story, taking place in what felt like a Blade Runner-esque Japan, where memory has become the only form of currency. And just like with dollars and cents, where there’s profit, there’s always someone wanting more. The rich covet, investing in people who are referred to as Hard-Drivers, aka those kept safe like a piggy bank of others memories. This has some thriller notes that were reminiscent of the film In Time, and some of the more scifi notes involving memory recall/replay that are hit upon in the movie of the same name, Rememory.

Felix and Jock are on the run. Wanted by the authoritarian, or perhaps even empirical, OneWorld. The deal they made with the yakuza is only going to keep them safe for some long. The seemingly all-powerful Nagasaki will do anything to remain in power and have memories to spare.

What follows is a fast paced technothriller that plows straight on into an all out revenge story. The scifi elements lend themselves well to a cyberpunk dystopia, and the central theme made for a unique and addictive read.

Intense, vivid, energetic crime thriller. Two main characters running through acid burn streets, pushing to achieve their goals. They must stay alive. Avoid the Yakuza and OneWorld security.

Their goal: stealing memory. The powerful coerce memory from others. The loss wiping a man’s mind to almost nothingness. Who are they without the historical reference making up their lives.

Amazing characterizations created in 68 pages. A fast-paced cyberpunk narrative served by flashbacks and the present time told in multiple viewpoints. Each chapter adding details, building clarity, wasting not a single word. Reaching a breath-taking conclusion.

Impressive. I’m planning on reading more of this author’s short story

Worth the chance

I found out about Frasier on Twitter, so completely third party here. His work is definitely worth taking the risk to read if you're on the fence. Entirely original ideas that keep your heart pumping the whole time. It's easy to forget that this is an independently published work. I can't wait for his new novel to come out soon! Fully expecting for this to be the next big name in sci fi.

I'm a sucker for good cyberpunk. And this is really good cyberpunk!
In his debut novella, author Frasier Armitage explores a very interesting concept that hooked me from page one.
In the futuristic world of Rememory, memories have become currency.
The story circles around Felix who has lost all his memories and step by step the reader discovers what happened to him and his friend Mitch.
Like many of the best works of the genre, the book asks the question of what makes us human, what makes us who we are. Are we nothing else but our memories?
And in this case, wouldn't our memories be the most valuable thing we possess? The next logical step is to make those memories a currency with the rich ones buying the experiences of other people for their amusement while poor people are stripped of everything they remember.
Your first date, your wedding, the birth of your child, the biggest success in your career, a beautiful sunset at the sea...what would you do to be able to keep those memories? And what would be left of you if stripped of all of those?
You'd be an empty husk, a blank canvas. And that's exactly what happens to Felix, our hero in Rememory.
What happened to him and if he'll be able to recover what he lost, are questions I don't want to discuss now because I don't want to spoiler anything. But it's worth finding out for yourself.
A talented, young author has entered the cyberpunk scene and I hope to read more by him in the future!
I highly recommend this book to all cyberpunk fans.

I picked this novelette up because I wanted to read a short SF story, but once I finished it I wished it had been much longer! It's difficult to review this short story without spoiling much of it, but what I can say is that in this future Asian metropolis nothing is what it seems and there are several plot-twists that will give you that "aha!" moment. It's all about memories and how in a dystopia future these can be traded and uploaded in other people's minds. I'd recommend this to anyone that would like to read an original and action-packed SF story without investing too much time in thick trilogies that nowadays have become the norm. I'm looking forward to reading more from Frasier Armitage.

Rememory by Frasier Armitage is a mind-blowing short story about a man on a perilous pursuit to take back his looted memories. Compelling characters drive the story into the maze of a world where memories are hoarded by the rich at the expense of all others. Every word propelled me on a thrilling ride of action and suspense, keeping me riveted to the very end. I’m eager to read more from this talented author.

What a fun, fast paced read. Once I started it I couldn’t put it down. It has everything I would ever want in a science-fiction piece. A well fleshed out world, a chilling concept and characters I was rooting for all the way through.

An excellent story!

Rememory is a high action thriller with a really great central concept where memories are traded as currency. It’s a delightful cyberpunk dystopia, following Felix as he tracks down those who stole his mind. First of all, the character work is excellent. You’re never quite sure whether those around Felix are trustworthy, with the constantly feeling like perhaps Felix has made a mistake, that he’s been duped. I don’t quite know how to explain this, experiencing that supreme vulnerability was unexpectedly visceral. Forgetting the minutiae of your day might not be so bad, but imagine trading away your important memories. Imagine, even, trading away the memory that you traded them! Something about the prospect of elective amnesia is incredibly unsettling. You’d be totally reliant on the honesty of strangers, and the avenues to abuse are especially disquieting. So the book carries this darker undercurrent to it that leaves you thinking long after the end (and that’s a hallmark of great sci-fi for sure)

Everything else about Rememory is tight. The pacing is fast, the action exciting, the plot thoroughly engaging, and the prose evocative. I don’t think I could point to a single negative thing about this. It’s simply an extremely well executed concept, delivered expertly. The story even subverted my expectations somewhat by the end. I was so caught up in the unsettling vibe of the book that I was legitimately surprised it ended where it did. I very much enjoyed this story and I would highly, highly recommend anyone picking it up on Kindle.

Overall, Frasier Armitage writes consistently fantastic short fiction, and I am very excited to see he’s working on his first full length novel, New Yesterday, which is coming soon. I’ll absolutely be keeping an eye on it.

Review: Rememory by Frasier Armitage

Synopsis

Felix doesn’t remember anything: who he is, his girlfriend, his job … but then again when your memory has been wiped and sold, that’s to be expected. Now he’s uploaded the memories of an old criminal acquaintance, he won’t stop until he’s taken back what’s his.

Review

Strap in tight as you’re in for a ride because once Armitage puts his foot on the gas, Rememory has no reverse gear. This novella is the literary equivalent of a one-shot movie. We follow Felix in an over-the-shoulder style fashion as he seeks to reclaim the memories that had been taken from him.

You see, Rememory takes place in a neo-dystopian asian setting where memories are used as a form of currency. The rich employ people to undertake certain experiences that they can then download and enjoy themselves. It all takes place in a synthwave sci-fi setting that goes hand in hand with the author’s customary addictive style.

To go into too much depth regarding the plot is to spoil this novelette. My favourite scene is by the “Mitch switch” where Felix downloads the memories of a hapless criminal. I won’t spoil any details as to what happens but the writing here is superb and completely flips the novlette on its head and then kicks the story into overdrive.

How Much is Your Memory Worth?

Armitage’s tightly packed sprint down memory lane is an unmissable sci-fi surge. It’s definitely not something to forget.

Adventurous, fast-paced, tense. This cyberpunk thriller is reminiscent of In Time, John Wick, and Mission Impossible. Armitage cleverly plays with time through a non-linear storytelling structure and asks us the questions: What happens when you don’t remember, and what happens when what you remember is not a memory that’s yours? This is a story that tackles the price of memory, weight of information, the significance of certain experiences over others, and what makes us who we are.

A big thank you to the author for a copy of the book!

Its been cool to see Frasier develop as a writer, and each story only gets better. One thing you have to admire is how big the ideas are, but also how creative. He doesn't write with copy and paste plots. In his stories he plays with concepts like time and memories like a jazz musician using common chords in unusual voicings that extend their usage. The result is familiar, yet new and original at the same time.

Armitage deftly executes the fresh concept of memory as currency. A fast-paced, action overload with well-written characters, Rememory is part cyberpunk, part thriller, and a total blast to read. Armitage always has elements of mystery and suspense in his writing, and this is no exception! Rememory is truly captivating. While reading, I often thought of the movie “In Time,” where currency was minutes and days of life.

Fast-paced Sci-Fi adventure with a really unique idea at its core: memories as currency.

The story touches on some complex and thought-provoking themes, but there's never a dull beat. Recommended, even if you're not really into Sci-Fi!

Hey good-readers,

I connected with Frasier Armitage a while ago on Twitter and when he came out with this cyberpunk novelette, I was instantly intrigued by the premise. In this world, memory has become currency and the main protagonist finds himself broke, without a past, and on the run.

Although this may seem like a hard concept to develop, it was done beautifully and from the first page, I was hooked. This is a smart, intriguing and masterfully executed story that you absolutely have to read. Highly Recommended.
