"Nobody likes reality," Leonard said. "That's why we tell stories."

Leonard Lundell is a crisis communicator at a Madison Avenue PR firm in Manhattan. His job is help those hurt by scandal by minimizing the potential damage a crisis could cause their personal or company brand by influencing public opinion through using the media.

To put it simply, he's in the reputation business.

The Appetite Factory by Jon Gingerich follows a Madison Ave., crisis management specialist living in a post-truth world. Mr. Gingerich is a fiction instructor in the Gotham Writer’s Workshop, and a published author. This is his debut novel.

Exceptionally engaging, astutely representational. From someone who was on the ground in an NYC corporate before and during the 2008 crisis, this novel captures the atmosphere exceptionally well. Gingerich's first novel drops us onto Madison Avenue prior as the Great Recession unfolds through the lens of Leonard Lundell, an genuinely unlikable crisis manager who eats inedible objects from soap to pencils. After handling a crisis that could change the trajectory of his firm, Leonard's secret gets exposed by an unexpected person, who turns the discovery into a string of additional encounters. He deals with other crisis, including the rural Ohio family he sought to escape.

This was a tough book to read at times, as the main characters were not especially likeable, but it was worth it for the pure beauty of the author's descriptive language and the frightening inside look at the PR world. One other observation: the main characters suffered from various mental illnesses which were treated as part of their persona rather than an illness. I wanted to give this book a 4.5, so I struggled with a rating. Not everyone will like this book, but I found it fascinating. ...more
