Make music with this hands-on introduction to the four instrument families: drums, horns, strings, and voice in this new board book series by a world-renown music educator.
What do a set of bongos, a tambourine, and a cooking pot have in common? They are all drums! This first introduction to instruments in the drum family begins with a simple explanation of what defines a drum. Young readers are then invited on a global exploration of a variety of percussive instruments and are encouraged to find drums of their own in the world around them.
Each title in the THIS IS MUSIC series features an interactive novelty musical element that invites the reader to play the book!
While this is a board book, it is full of great musical content as well, so it is the best of both worlds -- tough enough for the youngest non-reader, but sophisticated enough to suit the palate of older readers. The concept of steady beat (one of the earliest and most far-reaching musical skills) is emphasized throughout the book. The author also introduces readers and their families to some cultural drums, like bongos, tabla, and djembes! The book also has lots of onomatopoeia and is interactive not only in its language, but also because it has its own built-in drum! You cannot go wrong with this series of books by Rekha Rajan. As a musician, teacher, and musical liaison, she knows her music and makes it very accessible to littles and their families in these board books.
Wordy for a board book. Discusses the drum kit, bongos, djembes, marching band, tambourine, and pots. Interactive in having kids identify what images are drums and which are not, plus has a cool drum-material/surface at the end of the book for kids to tap on! Back cover has names of all the different types of drums mentioned in the book.

Engaging book that can be enjoyed by the youngest or even older kids who will learn something new, as may adults. This interactive book is a great introduction to one type of instrument. A great addition to the series!
This is a simple board book. I wished it rhymed, but it just talks about various drums, and where they came from. The book is okay, but a little long for a board book.
