Indian mythology especially our great epic battles, no matter how far fetched and absurd sometimes they sound hold great treasure within them. Maybe it's our twisted minds that laugh at the silliness of them and fail to understand the wisdom behind each episodes of these epics. Rather going deeper and understanding the underlying meaning, we scratch the surface and leave it. In 'Kathayen' you'll find those most cherished stories of our favourite characters, as orally passed from generation to generation ready with life lessons, lessons that are relevant even at this moment.

'Kathayen' is a beautiful illustrated collection of short stories inspired from Indian mythology. People can tell this stories verbatim but few know how to derive the wisdom out of it and use it in their own favour. The book comes as a rescue, each chapter retells the famous episodes along with kernel of inspiration and insights. The whole book is filled with beautiful Madhubani art which is very appealing to the eyes and gave this book a complete look.

Although it's written in very simple layman's English, still I found some insights a bit heavy for children but perfect for adults. I strongly recommend this book to parents. It would be great if parents read these stories to children and simplify the meaning for their better understanding.

Recently arguably the most premium B-school of our country, IIM Ahmedabad has announced that it is about to start a course on Srimad Bhagavad Gita as the learnings one can derive from it is timeless.
The stories from our Sanatan Dharma epics : Ramayana And Mahabharata are so full of wisdom that everyone should read them. The texts were written originally in Sanskrit and they offer such great depth and insights for individuals of all ages so much do that it becomes essential to start teaching those lessons to the tiny tots from a very young age itself.

This book serves the very purpose by providing immense value in the form of short tales aimed specifically at the character building of a child and the ultimate goal of our lives. The author has beautifully encrypted the message in easy to understand and a very simplistic approach of short stories which are deeply interlinked with the incidents mentioned in the epics .

The illustrations and artwork throughout the book is captivating. The language is comprehensible. The different chapters can serve as great bedtime stories . The book is not very child friendly as kids under 15 might find some learnings and lessons a bit difficult to fathom , but if their parents can assist them getting the intended message it can go a long way. The cover is cute though would have preferred some other background than green.

Overall a lovely piece of creation.

Amazing 31 short stories mainly taken from the epics the Mahabharata and the Ramayana with original blank ink illustrations for each story and what a good time I had reading the entire book in one sitting!

Even though it’s a book for young readers meant to be read to them by the adults, I find the book rather helpful and calming for the adult me with the chaotic mind.

The top highlights for this book would be

✔️the stories themselves told in a very refreshing manner which are short with something to learn from with a life lesson towards the end of each story

✔️of course the well done related illustrations which depict the most important scenarios in each part and the characters they represent

✔️the easy to learn life lessons with each story and what we can learn from each character mentioned in each story with a space to discuss and ask ourselves whether we should blindly take the ‘bad’ characters as bad or otherwise

I find this collection very refreshing to read. Hopefully this amazing book reaches more young readers.

Once a wise human said, “The books for children carry deep morale than any other book,” and I second this statement. Those bedtime stories are meant to mould kids into kind humans and assist them to garner good values. We read complicated stories with many lessons forged into one, but books for kids have numerous short stories for every required lesson. I read one such book Kathayen- Illustrated stories for children. This book is inspired by Hindu mythologies.

It is always said that ‘No two-person read the same book.’ This book is an explanation of that statement. As adults, we are urged to read these mythologies to unleash the quest of our lives, but these mythologies have a lot to teach. Nishtha Pathak and Rohit Pathak enlighten young minds with those lessons. They have combined the Madhubani Artwork with these stories, which belong to the ancient era of Hindu Gods. When we tell kids about these happenings, they always have a question to ask, and the author has compiled these lessons to answer those cute questions.

The writing style is easy, and the book has been compiled with a limited vocabulary. The artwork is fascinating and meant to captivate young minds. They have summarized the events delicately from the mythologies for the kids with moral thoughts that will prevail in present-day living. One of the lessons that I really appreciate is ‘Puja or prayer isn’t supposed to appease gods; it’s supposed to make us better human beings and take us closer to the ideals of our deity.’ They have replaced blind faith with rational morals in this book. Though the book is meant for kids, I would still recommend this to anyone because these lessons are evidently applicable in every step of our lives.

Kathayen illustrated stories for children by Nishita Pathak and Rohit Pathak
I am really fond of children's literature, and when it's combined with Indian mythology it's a must buy for me.
With rich setup, elaborate and entrancing stories filled with mythical beings and characters Kathayen is a celebration of Indian culture and Mythology
Filled with pleasing illustrations that expand the imagination, a generous dose of stories about Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna, Lord Rama, Hanuman and many more characters making it an appealing read for kids.
The stories are packed with incredible lessons and is a source of pure escapism for parents and kids.
A book that not only transports kids to the world of Indian mythology but they teach good morals and conduct too.
Looking for a good children's book, don't miss out on this fun ride.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 For thought provoking, beautifully structured and poignant story collection for kids.

Through his book, Kathayen, i.e., storytelling through religious discourse, the author has tried to apprise his readers about some of the immortal and quintessential tales of Indian mythology. A concise and delightful book.

Indians learn about their history, especially the stories related to millions of Hindu gods and goddesses, through stories. In fact, when it comes to Indian mythology, each tale represents a metaphor which one has to decipher through his or her ability.

It's the grey area which one has to understand. If they are eager to know the eternal truth behind those tales of mythology. Especially those related to the two great Indian epics, i.e., The Ramayana (the story of Lord Rama and Sita) and The Mahabharata (the largest epic in the world).

What is Kathayen by Rohit Pathak?

Kathayen's Illustrated Stories for Children is a concise book about 31 tales related to the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The author has retold these stories in his unique writing style. In fact, his better half, Nishtha Pathak, also supported him in this book through illustrations of these tales through the Madhubani art form.

The language of the book is easy to read. In fact, even a layperson can finish this book within a day or so. I recommend this book to those readers who are eager to read short tales of Indian mythology.

“It is the roots which give a tree strength, not its branches.”

The book at hand is 160 pages and as from the title itself, one may surmise that the contents of the book revolve around the pristine wisdom as taken from Ramayana and Mahabharata and make us realize their relevance and importance. The first chapter is titled “The Significance of Ganesha’s Mouse” where the relevance of a mouse as Ganesha’s vehicle has been shown and at the same time clearing many doubts as to its rodent nature and presenting its symbolic importance. The next chapter is titled “Mahabharata” and in the beginning, itself sets forth the underlying theme behind the epic for that is “Dharma” which is central to the whole book and also shows how it inspired Mahatma Gandhi as well. The next chapter is titled “Ganesha Writes the Mahabharata” which talks about the time when Ved Vyasa was interested to pen down the story of Kauravas and Pandavas but he needed an intelligent scribe and thus finally approached Lord Ganesha. As the chapters go further, there can be seen a smooth flow from one chapter to another despite the book being a collection of 31 chapters taken from both the epics but no sign of randomness of selection can be seen till the end.

The writing style of the book has been kept rather simple and expressive as the author cuts to the chase right at the beginning of every chapter thereby keeping the reader engaged throughout the book. In addition to the same, the simplicity quotient gets heightened by the usage of illustrations which makes this book an entertaining and insightful read for children of young age and thus keeping them connected to their roots and thus making it a must-read for everyone and not just children for wisdom must be gathered despite one’s age.

When I was a little kid, my grandmother used to tell me many stories from our great epics - "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata". I was familiar with the mischiefs of little Krisna, his great deeds, the chivalry of Karna, the devotion of Hanumana towards Lord Ram, the battle of Kurukhshetra and many more. This simple stories had developed a sense of morality, a sence of right and wrong in me,which i couldn't understand then, but i can fathom now.

But now, the time has changed. Children prefer playing video games, watching videos in youtube than listening stories from elders. Besides, most of the families are nuclear families where the children don't have the opportunity to live with their grandparents. And I think here comes the importance of this book.

First, let me tell you the content of this book -

It comprises of 31 short stories from "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata". And at the end of each story, the author has described what can we learn from the story ? And how can the learning be used in the practical day to day life ?

Now, coming to the speciality of this book -

It has many Madhubani illustrations almost in every chapters. It would be wrong, if I don't mention how creative and beautiful the illustrations are. It will catch anyone's attention.

Another aspect is the writing and language which is very easy. It can definitely be recommended to any children or any beginners.

Now just for a glimpse, i wanna enlighten you about what stories can you expect from this book - Birth of Krishna, The Burning Lanka, Bhagabat Gita, Birth of Karna, Krishna lifting Gobardhan parvat and many more.
Happy reading

"Set thy heart upon thy work, but never on its reward."
- Bhagavad Gita

When it comes to Indian mythology and its relevance in modern times, the argument in support of it remains unchallenged. No matter the age or language of narration, the epic tales of Mahabharata and Ramayana, including their retellings, never fails to wrap around the readers in a bubble of curiosity and enlightenment.

“ Kathayen” by Nishtha Pathak and Rohit Pathak is one such creative collection of 31 stories based on diverse incidences from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, portraying a profound fusion of age-old wisdom in the modern sense of morality and teachings. Complimented by beautifully rich illustrations of modern Madhubani art, each retelling of the stories creatively hooks the reader and bestows them with lessons highly relevant to the current times. The simple, easy, and fun style of narration makes this book a perfectly engaging read for children as well as adults, alike.

I was familiar with most of the stories but some of them was a learning experience for me too. It’s a short read which can be easily devoured in 1-2 sittings, making it a convenient read for young and impatient readers. Being a lover of art, the illustrations in the book caught my attention from the very beginning. I would like to appreciate and thank Nishtha Pathak for introducing these illustrations to us through this book. I would also like to applaud Rohit Pathak for his sheer sense of innovativeness in expressing the illustrations through stories. All in all, I would highly recommend this book to young readers.

Kathayen by Nishtha Pathak and Rohit Pathak is an excellent bunch of rousing and moral stories got from our incredible sagas Mahabharata and Ramayana. I love learning about our awesome Hindu folklore and couldn't want anything more than to give these illustrations and ethics to my child. Writer has picked some famous and some not really well known stories and has given them such excellence that I, as a peruser, am in wonderment. I love the way every story is introduced methodicallly, first the episode is clarified, then, at that point, creators assist us with distinguishing the center illustration be it kinship, authority, empathy, obligation, thoughtfulness, responsibility, and so on And afterward the delightful moral toward the finish of the story in italics is a wonder to peruse. These accounts are all around made to provide food the perusers of all age gatherings.

Madhubani painting representation was only the clincher. These representations upgrades the understanding experience and are very alluring to take a gander at. The language utilized is so basic yet exquisite and fresh. It's more straightforward for youthful perusers to fathom and engaging for every other person. As I have perused the extraordinary books Mahabharata and Ramayana (Hindi interpretation) I can say that writers have done equity to every single story. Creators capacity to associate this fantastic adventure to our regular daily existence and sharing these astounding examples are commendable.

Who doesn't love reading mythology?

Book_Review #90

Kathayen by Nishtha Pathak & Rohit Pathak is a beautiful bouquet of inspiring and moral tales derived from our great epics Mahabharata and Ramayana. I love reading about our wonderful Hindu mythology and would love to impart these lessons and morals to my son. Author has picked some popular & some not so popular stories and has presented them with such beauty that I, as a reader, am in awe. I love how each story is presented systematically, first the incident is explained, then authors help us identify the core lesson be it friendship, leadership, compassion, duty, kindness, commitment, etc. And then the beautiful moral at the end of the story in italics is a marvel to read. These stories are well crafted to cater the readers of all age groups.
.
Madhubani painting illustration was just the cherry on top. These illustrations enhances the reading experience and are quite attractive to look at. The language used is so simple yet elegant & crisp. It's easier for young readers to comprehend and engrossing for everyone else. As I have read the great books Mahabharata & Ramayana (Hindi translation) I can say that authors have done justice to each and every story. Authors' ability to connect this grand saga to our everyday life and sharing these amazing lessons are applaud worthy.

“If we believe in ourselves, we can rise above our difficult circumstances and achieve the pinnacle of success and excellence.”
Our dharma, our rich culture has always proved to be an eminent source of knowledge for self-improvement. Nishtha and Rohit Pathak in their book Kathayen: Illustrated Stories for Children have beautifully imbibed the various lessons one can profit from our scriptures.
I had brought this book for my cutest sister Jiya to make her more acquainted with our culture, and truly this book made the journey so interesting and inquisitive. Each story is accompanied by intricate Madhubani illustrations pertaining to the characters of the story. Such beautiful visuals can pique anyone’s interest in reading.
Some of the stories were very familiar from the scenes of Mahabharat and Ramayan. However some stories were new for me as well, such as one of my favourite – significance of the mouse as Lord Ganesh’s vehicle. The moral hidden behind this story seemed to be illuminating.
“Ganesha is the embodiment of wisdom and his mouse symbolizes the wavering human mind. As lord Ganesha controls the mouse, we must also learn to control our ego, thoughts and straying mind.”
With a simple writing style, the book became a total hit for my sister, even though I had to force her to start. And now I shall be loaded with the never-ending questions.

"There are three gates to self-destruction: Lust, Anger & Greed.” - Lord Krishna

When I was a child one of my favourite pastimes was flipping throught the thick hardbound illustrated editions of Mahabharata and Ramayana, pondering over the episodes of the epics and admiring the detailed pictures. Through Kathayen I was able to relive those memories. The author has taken up excerpts from the epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana and accompanying them are beautifully drawn Madhubani paintings, depicting scenes from the stories.

Kathayen is a rich pot-pourri of Valmiki's Ramayana that emphasizes on the goodness of character and playing the role one has been assigned with dedication. The Mahabharata on the other hand revolves around the essential topic of karma and dharma. These two rhyming words encapsulate the whole meaning of life. The contrasting ideologies represented in these two epics make Kathayen an engaging read; Lord Rama's Ramayana underlines ideal characters while Mahabharata puts choices of its characters before the characters.

The simple and hassle free language in which Kathayen has been penned is commendable, making it a great read for children, and the illustrations add beautifully to the reading experience.

Kathayen

Should celebrating diwali limit to cooking delicacies, decoration, clicking pictures, bursting crackers and rituals? Unless we sit and tell our kids stories about our rich mythology we can't expect them to believe in the rituals wholeheartedly.

Kathayen is a step this direction only. It has 31 short anecdotes handpicked from Ramayan and Mahabharat that will interest kids. Every story also has a madhubani painting accompanying it which will definitely stay with a child forever because illustrations impact kids a lot.

Special mention to the Pandavas and Kauravas family tree illustration. Not just the kids even my husband needed to see it because there's so much confusion around it 🙈.

As a family we thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was perfectly timed to bring in the festivities. Sometimes we get so busy in our daily rigmarole that we forget to pause and indulge our kids. So many questions are left unanswered with ' I'm tired right now'. Books like these are great to start a conversation with them.

Age appropriate for a 7 year old but can be read to younger kid too.

“Friendship never remains in the world in anyone’s heart without being worn out, Time wears it out, anger destroys it. The poor cannot be the friend of the rich, the unlearned cannot be the friend of the learned, the coward cannot be the friend of the brave.”

'Kathayen', is a beautifully written and illustrated book which takes us to the stories of our great Indian epics - The Ramayana and The Mahabharata. This book is a collection of thirty-one short stories from these epics and are created with the touch of Madhubani art. Some of the stories that surrounds — the childhood of Ram, the episode where Hanuman lands in Lanka, the kidnapping of Sita, Arjun piercing the eye of the fish, birth of Karna, the disrobing of Draupadi and many more.

With utmost simplicity and elegantly illustrated art, this collection rivets the reader of any age group. Reading this book was indeed a pleasing experience for me, as it was a feeling of living through these epics in a different and fresh way. I highly recommend this book to young readers.

Children's book!

Kathayen is a children's book wirtten by Nishtha Pathak and Rohit Pathak. The book covers different incidents in Indian mythology and philosophy and teaches many lessons through them. The book also has few illustrations in the form of Madhuban art which makes it more interesting to the kids. Along with explaining the details and incidents of what happened in ancient India, the book imparts many life lessons through the stories. Its like explaining history in a more entertaining and productive way. Its a really short book and covers 31 tales in total. Its a good and an unique way of teaching the kids of happenings in the Indian myth. Not just for kids, a lot can be learned by adults too. The lessons are much applicable to what we face in our daily lives in the present. Overall, I would recommend this book not only to kids, but even the grown ups. Happy reading :)

PLOT: Kathayen is a collection of 31 mythological stories of Two great Sagas- Ramayana and Mahabharata.

REVIEW: ● All the stories are narrated with simplest language possible, easily understandable by young minds. There is always a lot to learn from these two epic tales of all times and this book surely brings out many of them. Authors have definitely put a lot of thought into the presentation of the stories which is very child friendly.
● The narration is also illuminated by beautiful madhubani art throughout the book which takes the book to a whole new level of understanding.
● The cover of the book is simple and sweet and the font is also good though I wish for the book to be bigger in size as in to make read aloud sessions easy. Apart from this, this book is a great way to introduce children and even adults to these two sagas.

Overall, It is a short and enjoyable read.

As we all know both Ramayana and Mahabharata teach us the importance of duty, therefore it is also an important duty of parents to share the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata with their children. Kathayen is a collection of short stories from our greatest epic in a very simplified form connecting it with modern days for children to understand better. Besides the stories, the book contains beautiful Madhubani Style Art for each chapter. Madhubani art an ancient style was generally done on mud walls to depict mythological stories in an intricate geometric pattern.
Whether it is Surpanakha or Lord Rama meeting Shabari, or even Sanjay narrating the great battle to the blind king Kathayen will link up the epic with the modern days for children to understand life lessons.

"On life whenever we face a conflict, we do not need to wait for an astral voice to tell ehatcis right or wrong. We always have an inner voice that can guide us... "
After reading the book all I say is just one word "awesome! "
It made me remember my childhood days when I used to read lots of stories on the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
This is a collection of stories from the great epics.
I must say that j really enjoyed the stories and the lessons from the stories too.
The way the author narrated the stories in short with proper narration is just awesome.
The best part of the book is, it's pictures and the illustration that used in the book.
The language is simple and lucid.
The title is appropriate.
The cover is really beautiful!
Overall, a must read!

Kathayen is a collection of 31 short stories covering the important episodes from Indian epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. And not only this, each chapter start with Madhubani artwork which is enough to grab anyone's attention.
The language of the book is easy and lucid as the targeted audience is kids.
All the stories are written the way they are without tempering with the real facts however at the same time the authors explained simply the real meaning hidden behind the story and that's what made this book a perfect read for your kid.
When kids in the 21st century spend more time on mobile, somewhere they are losing touch with our history and in this situation, books like "Kathayen" plays a crucial role.

This book is a nostalgic collection of mythological stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Like how we Hindus believe in starting off something with Lord Ganesha's blessings is auspicious, the book starts with Ganesha's story.

Each chapter is filled with magic of mythological characters that teaches us the essential life values and morals. The illustrations are done through Madhubani artform. An ancient style of artwork done on mud walls to interpret mythological stories of Gods. That seems the highlight of this book. The writing style, the illustrations, the madhubani art and everything is amazing.

Do gift this book to children. I am sure children will love it. Even adults will enjoy this book. If you are looking for an inspirational children's book. Pick this one❤

This book is a collection of 31 stories from the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana.

The stories are portrayed through beautiful Madhubani art, an Indian style of art created to depict mythological stories of gods and goddesses in intricate geometric patterns on clay walls.

Through these retellings, authors reinterpret and share age-old wisdom and important life lessons on friendship, leadership, kindness, trust, devotion, truth, and more.

After every story, the authors have written a life lesson.

All the stories in this book are my favorite but one story holds my heart and that is - Krishna's Birth.

This book is perfect for children.

The language used is easy and beginner friendly.

The cover page is very beautiful and perfect for this book.

A must read.
